LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Release Day

As if it couldn’t get any worse, Shohei Ohtani might have gotten a leg injury. Here is the speculation about where Lucas Giolito goes.

Trey Mancini just got released by the Reds five days after he signed a minor league deal with them. It looks like they just didn’t have room for him. Luis Cessa just got released by the Nationals. The Yankees released Spencer Howard. Josh Donaldson also got released. Adam Kolarek just elected free agency.

Kole Calhoun homers for the Guardians to win one in extras. Alex Cobb came very close to a no hitter, but it slipped away from him in the ninth inning.

Bryce Harper hit his 300th home run courtesy of Angels pitching.

There is now a complaint about a third underage girl that Wander Franco was involved with down in the Dominican Republic. Some fans rushed onto the field and made contact with Ronald Acuna Jr. They got arrested for that. Between that and the gunfire at Guaranteed Rate Field the MLBPA is now investigating player safety.

Bo Bichette just went straight back on the injured list.

When the owner of White Sox, Jerry Reinsdorf, was asked if he would sell the team:
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/08/reinsdorf-no-intention-to-sell-white-sox.html

I’m going to couch this so nobody writes that I thought of selling. Friends of mine have said: ‘Why don’t you sell? Why don’t you get out?’ My answer always has been: ‘I like what I’m doing, as bad as it is, and what else would I do?’ I’m a boring guy. I don’t play golf. I don’t play bridge. And I want to make it better before I go.

Watching from the outside. Jerry needs to be gone as much as Arte needs to be gone.

That is what is scary about these elderly billionaires. Theyre too old to have some kind of look-in-the-mirror epiphany that they’re part of the problem AND they have nothing else to do with this money so they’ll hold the teams hostage.

Nice to see that people are finally talking about moving forward instead of the full on garbage show that was this season. My one concern is, if Arte is still the owner when next season starts….. I don’t see much changing. Anyway, one can always hope.

Not trading Shohei was psychopathic imo. But that says a lot about where the dreamer owner is always coming from.

Kyren Paris in 2023 at AA:

.255 BA
.393 OBP
.417 SLG
.810 OPS
14 HR
23 doubles
44 SB
29.4 K %
17.1 BB %

21 year old, which is a -2.6 age difference in AA.

Would love for Turk’s opinion if he sees this. I’m excited.

Since June 29th KP has been even better. batting .299/.450/.451 .901 OPS with 23 SBs in 26 attempts. 43 BB, 55 K’s in 213 PA’s Like most all Angel prospects not named Schanuel, the K’s are way too high but you got to love the speed and the ability to take a walk

Adell, Adams, Paris, Kochanowicz, Davis Daniel are left in the farm.

Marsh and Bradish turned out to become studs, albeit not with us lmao.

Sorry I meant to say position player with the Angels.

Adell and Adams are a mess and Im not sure they’ll ever be anything more than below average with their inherent lack of plate discipline. The book has not been written yet completely on Matty Thaiss so theres still hope there. I guess Calabrese or Blakely could still have an epiphany but that looks unlikely with each passing day.

Brandon Marsh is definitely the best position player Billy ever drafted under his Angel Reign but lets O’hope we got something in return even better.

Relative to drafting pitchers Billy seemed to do little better . While Bradish is on top of the leader board, theres still potential that Detmers could surpass him. (or Canning if he doesn’t fall apart) I am intrigued by Daniel if he is healthy . he doesn’t strike out a whole lot of guys at AAA last year but he seems to induce weak contact .Hopefully the Angels brain trust wont screw him up too bad. I have followed all of the hype with Kochanowicz but he seems too through large adjustment period every time the Angels move him up a leve but hes been down right awful at AA and Im not sure he hasn’t plateaued there.

But it’s coupled with a 17% walk rate – which is amazing. And he’s 2.5 years younger than league. The K rate isn’t bad considering those two points.

K’s aren’t optimal, but if the guy walks 10%+ of the time too. It’s tolerable.

See Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani, etc.

When talking about Manager Andy Schatzley, members of the 2022 Rocket City Trash Pandas are quick to describe their manager as “a tremendous leader,” and “a great example for all of us.”

While Schatzley is quick to rightfully point out that his work is backed by a talented coaching staff around him in the Rocket City and a strong Los Angeles Angels player development staff, the admiration received from players he coached are the reminders of a successful season.

In his first season at the Double-A level, Schatzley was at the helm as the Trash Pandas won the Southern League’s North Division title for both the first and second half. The 81-57 record in the regular season was the best in the Southern League as the Trash Pandas reached the playoffs for the first time.

At least there is some team in the Angels system that is still capable of reaching 80 wins.

Adams/Fletcher/Padlo/Soto/Okey/Walsh/Oliva/Phillips/Palmeiro.

I estimate that Plummer will be added to 28 man roster tomorrow.

Paris + Plummer and no Adams, seemingly indicates a Rengifo-Moniak-Grichuk OF until further notice.

With Neto still out, I’m curious if we go Paris or Squid at SS.

There is no culture on this team and no chemistry. What I have learned through the years is that players build chemistry and camaraderie in the minors and take that with them as they make it to their top professional leagues (added as core players).

The Halos haven’t done that in two decades. 🤔 It is hard to build a team with random players. You need a core that know each other (and play for one another), and then you fill in the pieces.

3. Yoshinobu Yamamoto
Scouts from 10 teams, including the Mets and Yankees, saw a recent scoreless gem.
Most big markets are in for this smallish right-hander, known for poise and athleticism, who is a two-time MVP, but not the Angels, who are concentrating on Ohtani.
Yamamoto is 25, and there’s no draft pick attached –— two pluses.

Everyday I seem to find something new about this waiver rule. As it turned out, Jeff Fletcher was not exactly correct in explaining this rule.
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/08/braves-adam-kolarek-agree-to-minor-league-deal.html
Now 34, Kolarek has pitched in parts of seven big league seasons. He was a quietly effective lefty specialist early in his career with the Rays and Dodgers. His performance over the past few seasons has been more mixed, as he struggled for Oakland between 2021-22 before this year’s small-sample success. The sidearmer doesn’t throw hard and has struggled mightily against right-handed hitters, but he’s held lefty swingers to a 0.184/0.234/0.250 line in his major league career.

By signing him before September 1, the Braves keep open the possibility of Kolarek factoring into their playoff picture. Players only need to be in an organization by the end of August to be eligible for the postseason. Even players who aren’t on the 40-man roster at the start of September can get onto the playoff roster via application to the league office for an exemption to replace an injured player, which happens a few times each year.

Cowboy26
Legend

This is why the past many playoff contending teams intentionally leave a seriously injured player on the 40 man roster to swap out later for someone who is in the organization but not on the 40 man. Think Frankie Rodriguez circa 2002

I also frequent an LA Kings blog and they are very strict against posting any potty mouth. I am glad that this place isn’t so strict, since F-bombs are the best way to describe the Halos’ ownership and management.

Everything (and I do mean everything) the Organization has done this year (or not done) has been focused on keeping Ohtani and attempting to convince him to stay in Anaheim. Want to know why Arte chose or did not choose to do something this season? “Trying to keep Ohtani” is the answer to any of those questions.

I think it was a big mistake to be so uni-focused while running a baseball Organization. Arte has mortgaged the future to try to keep Ohtani. And now Ohtani will most likely be gone. Big mistake.

Jeff Fletcher continues to think that the Dodgers are the #1 destination for Sho, but he still thinks the Angels #2. If you have time to spend 30 minutes, here is his reasoning.

Just can’t see Sho punching us in the nut sack by going to the Dodgers. Even the Mariners would be less of a groin shot.

I’d rank it:

  1. Angels
  2. Mariners
  3. Giants

4.Dodgers
5.Padres

If being protected of his privacy by the team is a priority for Sho, then I would reverse #4 and #5. Otherwise, I agree with your ranking. He would not touch the east coast teams with 3.3 meter pole.

For me, it would be:
1) Padres (loved Tony Gwynn and I have always had a soft spot for them since).
2) Giants
3) Seattle
4) Angels
5) Dodgers

I honestly just want to move on and see the kids play. I love Trout, but would understand them trading him to start a youth movement properly.

Padres/San Diego have similar vibes akin to that of Angels/Anaheim compared to Dodgers/Los Angeles. However, the biggest draw for Sho to San Diego would be Yu Darvish, Senpai MLB pitcher that Sho has always respected. It could be analogous to what Eduardo Escobar meant to Rengifo.

BTW, Sho is equal opportunity as far as restricting media access is concerned. It does not matter whether they are American or Japanese.

It is a well known story in Japan when Sho won his first AL MVP in 2021, he was invited to participate as a judge for the most popular annual TV program on New Year’s Eve. The program is composed of the year’s popular musicians to be divided by gender and is a 3 hour singing competition against each other; it is the most watched program (besides sporting events) since 1961, and celebrities are invited to participate as judge and they consider it as national honor.

NHK (equivalent of BBC) started negotiating Sho’s appearance, and Sho promised that he would consider it because his mom (the program has been popular especially amongst older Japanese females) would love Sho be involved. Apparently one of the producers leaked to the media that Sho would take part, and as soon as Sho heard the leak, he immediately declined. He has completely shunned Japanese media since 2021.
