Angels blow it, but win somehow

The Angels still had a game before losing up to 5 players to waivers… somehow. Whatever, the point was that they were basically tanking. So who was pitching anyway? Detmers. And he went only 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, striking out 3 and walking 3. Only 84 pitches too? Huh?

Well, at least Lopez got to pitch one last time in an Angel uniform. And it went horribly. TrAdition. How about the OF duo of Renfroe and Grichuk? Well today was Renfroe’s day to look good, going 3-4 with a home run and 4 rbi.

How about Matt Moore? He is on the waiver wire as well. Matt technically did better than Lopez, only giving up a 2 run home run instead of a 3 run one! But hey, at least he will be remembered forever as the one who gave up Harper’s 300th.

But the Angels offense was good enough and they win somehow.

Highlighted Recap

Renfroe got the first runs of the game with a 2 run home run in the 2nd.

2-0 Angels

The lead did not last as a hit

2-1 Angels

And another

Tied the game up

But the Angels offense wasn’t dead as a bunt actually worked.

3-2 Angels

And Ohtani was pitched to.

4-2 Angels

Even Drury showed up.

5-2 Angels

Alas the bullpen came in and gave up a run.

5-3 Angels

And then the lead, thanks Lopez, enjoy your new team.

6-5 Phillies

However, Renfroe came through in the top of the 8th with a 2 run single to take the lead back.

7-6 Angels

Hey, I know, let Matt Moore pitch one last time for the Angels and there goes the lead

8-7 Phillies

But these Angels do not give up, as Rengifo hit a sac fly to tie the game up after Nolan kept his hit streak alive.

TIED GAME

And then Drury came through, giving the Angels the lead again!

10-8 Angels

Angels win! Somehow.

Upcoming

No game tomorrow, Angels end August with a losing record and very shitty performances and injuries. It has been utterly pathetic and amazing how well this team likes to buttercup the fans. At Oakland this weekend as College Football starts and I have no idea who would want to watch the Angels over that.

Once all the Claimed Players are taken here’s what I want to see

Schanuel (First Base) (Keep learning & improving)
Ohtani (DH) (Triple Crown Please)
Drury (Second Base) (Continue to close out the Season strong)
Moose (Third Base) (Leader in the Clubhouse, so playing time warranted)
Rengifo (Left Field) (He’s been raking in the 2nd half, earned his playing time)
O’Hoppe (Catcher) (Keep learning & improving)
Moniak (Center Field) (Keep learning & improving)
Cabbage (Right Field) (Keep learning & improving)
Neto (Shortstop) (Keep learning & improving)

Bench: Escobar (Still can’t find playing time), Wallach (Backing up O’Hoppe), Velazquez (Speed kills, Angels aren’t removing him), Adams (Someone has to backup the Outfield)

Trout can focus on getting healthy for next year (If he doesn’t demand a trade).
Rendon is basically Rendone (One of the Angels’ worst signings).
Adell can focus on getting healthy for next Spring (Outfield is wide open next year).
Ward should be back next year (Hopefully he can fully recover).
Thaiss can focus on getting healthy for next year (Not sure his injury extent & too GA to look up).
Urshela can focus on getting healthy for next year (Don’t mind him being Platooned or Utility Player).
Too GA to put up the Pitching side of things, lol (Let the Young guys Pitch & see who is worth keeping for next year).

Go Halos (Fun, exciting games is what I’m rooting for besides Shohei Ohtani going for Triple Crown and securing his 2nd MVP).

So do we have a chance to still get the 2nd rd compensation pick for Ohtani, if all the waiver players and their contracts get claimed? Or are we cursed with the 4th rounder because we made the I’ll advised trades?

Sportsdominator23

If everyone is Claimed that was put on Waivers, that should be enough to put the Angels under the Luxury Tax (Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong). Therefore, if Ohtani leaves in the Offseason it becomes a 2nd round comp pick. If the Angels are over the Luxury Tax then him leaving would be a 4th round comp pick.

I’m guessing all players on waivers will be claimed. Even Renfroe would be a serviceable 4th or 5th outfielder for a playoff team. The pitchers would add depth to any playoff team.

We just have to wait until 10 am west coast time tomorrow. It will be somewhat similar to August 1, but smaller in scale. I thought there were only 6 players. Texas would love to add Moore or Lopez especially after today’s disaster with Chapman, but other teams will scoop them up before Texas, who was rumored to have placed claims for all 6 Angel players.

I think all of them are gone. Why wouldn’t they be? Low risk/high reward. Unless a team has a full 40 they are happy with – why not?

The only complete team in my estimation is the Braves. All other teams have needs, so you are right. But as Cowboy26 mentioned, there are many players that are available such as Carlos Carrasco and Mike Clevinger and others who were not publicly announced. Even Trey Mancini asked for release from the Reds to make himself available. It will be another intriguing day how these transactions unfold tomorrow.

This was a disaster of a season.

It’s time to turn the page.

But how can the Halos pivot from this season and build any kind of positive momentum for next season?

The team is losing 6 quality players this year to save 7 million.

The only possible direction next year is to go with the youth movement and find more moving pieces to build a decent base.

But, Perry tried this this season – and look at where we are at.

It feels as though Phil is gone.

And, Perry is hanging by a thread….

Same..as much as I hate the Ass’to, they’ve been there and done it. Used to them winning.

I don’t want Texas and Seattle to succeed. Looks like all three make the postseason.
If the Blue Jays can overtake one of them, I hope it’s the Mariners.
My often wrong and bitter prediction is the M’s peaked to soon. They won’t keep this up all of September, going to run out of gas, dare I say choke.

This is informative read if you are wondering where Giolito may end up tomorrow. Even at 62-72, they think that Padres might claim Giolito.

What are the Angels anymore?
What are they even trying to do?
What do I look for, what do I root for, when I watch a game?

Some insight as to why the Angels probably held on to Moose despite him being an FA too. I don’t know the actual savings for him, but maybe here’s why:

The Angels have also appreciated Moustakas’ presence in the clubhouse. It was notable that he was not among the six players reportedly placed on waivers, even though he’s also a free agent at the end of the season.

Whether or not Moustakas is back next season, the Angels clearly see value in the time he’s spending with the young players for the rest of this season.

“He’s still a really good major-league baseball player,” Nevin said. “He’s done a heckuva job for us. He’s won a lot of games for us. But more so he’s brought a lot to that room, instant credibility because of where he’s been and what he’s done in this game. He’s won a World Series, a lot of playoff games. The more guys you can have in your clubhouse like that, the better off you’re going to be.”

I thought that is why we traded for Eduardo Escobar? Rengifo’s big accountability brother?

Both of these “credibility guys” will likely be gone next year and then who will set the example in the clubhouse?

I assume Moore, Lopez, Giolito, Grichuk and Renfroe will all be claimed. With the need to replace those 5 players and add an additional 2 as the rosters expand to 28 on 9/1, I hope we prioritize youth and players will theoretical “upside”.

DH – Ohtani
C – O’Hoppe
1B – Schanuel
2B – Drury
SS – Rengifo
3B – Moose
LF – Adams
CF – Moniak
RF – Cabbage
bench – Escobar, Wallach, Brett Phillips, Livan Soto, Michael Stefanic, Kyren Paris

SP – Sandoval, Detmers, Canning, Silseth, Anderson

RP – Estevez, Soriano, Leon, Loup, Barria, Gerardo Reyes, Jose Marte, Victor Mederos

Left off Velasquez and Rosenberg who are presently on the active roster, but much to my dismay, will likely stick around.

Neto is expected back in 10ish days, per Fletcher. Joyce had a rehab assignment today and is questionable to return this season. Thaiss, Bachman and Adell are doubtful to return. I refuse to make any more guesses about Trout and his health.

Surely, Perry will make us suffer thru AAAA players in Squid, Rosenberg, Herget, Ingram, Fletcher, Walsh, Padlo.

Remember when? Brett Phillips was a thing. One of the whipping boys. Back when we would talk about getting rid of him, fine-tune the team. Bring up Adell, before Mickey’s magical little fart parade when he was a Team MVP candidate. Back when we thought of a possible playoff run and the team’s future development. Back when Renfroe, Walsh and Ward were going to have big years…Now look at us. From all that to rooting for Thomas the Tank Engine. Things implode quickly with this team. Good times!😀

For those that don’t want to place any blame on Perry, remember we started the season with Phillips and Lamb as our 4th outfielder and backup first baseman.

I would definitely like to see Moniak, Adams, Adell, Schanuel, and Cabbage play as much as possible. Assuming Adell returns. This won’t happen, but what’s the purpose of playing Trout. They need to look at their young players. If Adell does not return, I would like to see Moniak, Adams, and Cabbage play the outfield every day so you can evaluate them against major league pitching.

I’m all for the youth movement, but if Trout can play I want to see him play. For the fans, for himself, for the record books, for Shohei, for the team … there is no world in which I’d rather evaluate Jordyn Adams and Trey Cabbage over watching Mike Trout play in his final season with Shohei.

Btw, Adell is most likely out for the season.

I don’t think it will be an issue because he may not return anyway. Under any normal circumstances, I would obviously want Trout playing, but returning from a broken hand to play in meaningless games in September when he wasn’t exactly tearing it up before he was injured not so much. I would much rather evaluate Adams and Cabbage this September instead of next April in games that could potentially count unless they are tanking.

Unbelievable win for a team that just cashed out. Wonder if Renfro tried extra hard today hoping to look good so a competitor picks him up. A Positive, tickets to remaining home games gonna be really cheap, especially if you buy game day. Gonna enjoy seeing Ohtani live regardless if games are meaningless.

Why wouldn’t they? They are still contractually obligated to the Angels, and it’s far from certain that any player claimed will be informed before tomorrow morning. Altho, it would make for a great MeanArte thread if they left them all in Philadelphia.

Shoutout to the bullpen who managed to stink it up (minus Estevez) big time. Renfroe w/another meaningless HR. All those AB’s when the season mattered and it may as well have been me hacking at pitches 3 feet out of the zone. Oh well.

Thumbs up to Nevin who finally figured out you can bunt and sometimes good things happen! Everyone doesn’t have to hit a HR. Take that kernel of knowledge with you for your next stop in AA or Jr college.

This “team” is disintegrating right before our eyes and hopefully they finish the job. Only a complete 3 stooges finish will bring the full on change this franchise needs. That fool Arte will probably still be around sadly but maybe bring the laughingstock of MLB will get him to step back when he hires a new GM, and coaching staff.

Yeah it feels like a new regime is coming, but who would really be better that PTP, given his circumstances (would a guy like Dombrowski/Herzog/Epstein sign here without being autonomous?). Like to see PTP go for at least a couple more years with his own hamdpicked Ausmus. And with more autonomy, which it appears that he has more than Eppler and DiPoto

Team’s RISP today: 6 for 11. Amazing. Could that be Angels season best? That’s despite 11Ks, 6 of them coming from Schanuel, Hee-Fo, and Sho.

Because the official scorer corrected 🐙 bunt hit to sac bunt, the Angels missed the feat where all starters had at least one hit today. If 🐙 is starting (hopefully Neto or Moniak returns to action), he needs to bunt every single time and I do not mind even if he fails 3rd strike bunt..
