Detmers Gem Leads Angels to 2-0 Win

Reid Detmers was cruising early and staked to a 1-0 lead thank to Shohei Ohtani’s 42nd home run of the year.

The Ohtani blast was the only run scored through five innings. Detmers was not only pitching a shutout, he had yet to allow a hit.

Through six innings Detmers kept the no no and had only thrown 74 pitches. The Angels offense wasn’t much help, though, with only the one run scored.

The no no was aided by a questionable error call against Luis Rengifo. And it was aided by a nice defensive play by Moniak. But outside of that and a couple of walks, Detmers was really good tonight.

Detmers looked pretty gassed at the end of seven innings. He was hosed on a 2-2 count with 2 outs in the 7th on Robbie Grossman, ultimately walked Grossman which extended the inning. He was at 104 pitches through 7.

For some reason Phil Nevin rolled Detmers out to start the 8th. He got one out before giving up his first hit on his 108th pitch, a double to Marcus Semien. Reynaldo Lopez was able to get the last two outs and keep the Angels up 1-0.

Matt Thaiss gave the Halos a little breathing room with a solo shot in the 9th; a beautiful blast to right centerfield.

Carlos Esteves came in and got the save.

Angels win 2-0! What a game.

The east coast cable company whose name I for the life of me could not promulgate just announced that the Angels is the first team ever in MLB to hit a homerun in the first and 9th inning to win a game 2-0.

Padres won again against AL best Orioles and FanGraphs playoff odds will probably have exceeded 30% with tonight’s win. Cub’s odds are now better than 50%. My prediction at this point: Braves division winner, Phillies WC, Cubs or Brewers division winner and the other WC, Dodgers division winner with Padres or Giants get the last WC.

Logan was 2 for 3 and caught 5 innings in SLC. I wonder if Trout would have a simu game tomorrow though it’s an off day.

Nice solid win Angels. I could go for more of those.

Livan Soto hit 2 homeruns tonight in SLC. I can see Soto swapping places with Squid.

Soto has more value than Squid, imo. He is competant with the glove and has more potential with the bat.

Good. His only calling card to the game is his defense, and he botched two easy plays.

Nevin was right to call out his lack of focus.

Because of a powerful typhoon 2 days ago, national Koshien high school tourney was postponed by one day. Sho’s alma mater Hanamaki East high school would have played yesterday, but they are playing right now. They are leading 5-2 in the 6th inning against previous best 4 twice Chiben Academy.

Hanamaki East has defeated Chiben Academy to reach Elite 8. They will play quarter final game on Saturday, Japan time.

The tournament redraws brackets for quarterfinals, and Hanamaki East will now face last year’s defending champion Sendai Ikuei Academy. It is almost like Duke vs North Carolina.

Congratulations to Detmers. Glad the folks on this site were not making starting pitching decisions tonight.

What do you suggest we do now? Who do the Angels drop from the rotation? Sandoval, Canning, or Giolito?

None of the above.
Keep rolling em’ out there IMO.

However, if they go that route, they should probably consider sitting Canning for health related concerns. He’s already been on the IL once
for “soreness” and he’s still not to far removed from more severe injuries the previous two years

That would be 7 man rotation, unless they are skipping Sho again.

A lot of soreness & fatigue this time of the year. I wouldn’t be overly vexed about a 7 man rotation.

Skip Sho again, let him get rested, give him one more cycle off and then play him. The team isn’t going to the post season so it really doesn’t matter.

Canning – keep him for long relief

I agree with the choice. He can be a long reliever like Barria in case any of the starters flame out early.

We can stack starters, someone to start expecting to go 4-5 innings, with another starter queued up to come in after that. Keep the bullpen fresh.

It’s a good point. If Shohei returns to the rotation who would you move to the bullpen?

3 hits for Shohei tonight, including the HR to make it a nail biter.

I did not want to jinx the No-No, so I would not post, Detmers going for number 2nd No Hitter. Great and exciting win tonight.

Same here. I didn’t post any comments until it was broken up the 8th inning double.

We are “Old Skool ” do not mention it. Vinny would mention it and I would cringe. Bob Starr would not except to recap a half inning.

Too bad the announcers didn’t agree with you. I’ve never seen a crew mention that damn no hitter so much. Wayne talked non stop about it until the inevitable hit.

Wayne acts like he wants to be in NY again. Not a good fit.

Baseball is crazy. Detmers pitches a gem after such a crappy few starts. We have to have patience. Detmers, Sandy, and The Wolfman are still very young, and were frankly rushed to the big leagues.

I still haven’t forgiven Estevez for that blown save against the M’s. I was there and I’m still pissed.

Detmers is just maddening. Of course he throws a one-hitter into the 8th inning after stinking up the joint badly against the cheaters.

And this one-hitter isn’t against a cheap team either.
