Reid Detmers was cruising early and staked to a 1-0 lead thank to Shohei Ohtani’s 42nd home run of the year.
The Ohtani blast was the only run scored through five innings. Detmers was not only pitching a shutout, he had yet to allow a hit.
Through six innings Detmers kept the no no and had only thrown 74 pitches. The Angels offense wasn’t much help, though, with only the one run scored.
The no no was aided by a questionable error call against Luis Rengifo. And it was aided by a nice defensive play by Moniak. But outside of that and a couple of walks, Detmers was really good tonight.
Detmers looked pretty gassed at the end of seven innings. He was hosed on a 2-2 count with 2 outs in the 7th on Robbie Grossman, ultimately walked Grossman which extended the inning. He was at 104 pitches through 7.
For some reason Phil Nevin rolled Detmers out to start the 8th. He got one out before giving up his first hit on his 108th pitch, a double to Marcus Semien. Reynaldo Lopez was able to get the last two outs and keep the Angels up 1-0.
Matt Thaiss gave the Halos a little breathing room with a solo shot in the 9th; a beautiful blast to right centerfield.
Carlos Esteves came in and got the save.
Angels win 2-0! What a game.
