LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Six Days

Six days are now left until the trade deadline.
As we approach the trade deadline the Angels win more often than they lose As a result, the trade of Shohei Ohtani becomes less likely. The Pirates just released infielder Drew Maggi. Meanwhile the Twins released Aaron Sanchez. The Yankees released Michael Feliz so he could go sign with the Chunichi Dragons. Raimel Tapia cleared waivers and elected free agency.

The Cardinals activated Adam Wainright from the 15 day IL. The Guardians moved Shane Bieber to the 60 day IL and selected Daniel Norris. Outfielder Lee Jung-hoo of the Kiwoom Heroes will have season ending ankle surgery. In total, four Rockies are having Tommy John surgery this week.

Today (essentially right after Angels game) Hanamaki East High School (where Sho played ball and graduated from) will play the final game in regional Iwate summer tournament. If they win this game, they punch the ticket to the national Koshien tournament. So, Sho will try to provide a good omen for alma mater by doing the following.

If Neto’s back condition is this tenuous now, he’ll probably be dealing with it for the a while moving forward wether he’s playing or on the IL. Wonderful.

Squid hits Lefties much better than RHP’s this year ( .831 OPS vs .533 OPS) . So do Rengiblow ( .862 OPS vs .599 OPS) & Escobar (.788 OPS vs .544 OPS) . So unless they sit Moose and play Escobar at first and Rengiblow at Third theres no room at the Inn for the Plumber.

Assuming he could get us something in return, hopefully more than rental for remainder of the season. This is also assumes we plan on Adell being a part of the OF next year. This will make the Rule 5 issue moot. PTP, find us a pitcher. Or find us the next O’hop or Mick Moniak.

There’s a lot to like about him… OBP over .350, 80-grade speed, still only 23 years old. Would be a shame to deal him without seeing him a bit in Anaheim. I don’t think the Rule 5 thing is an issue at this point… 40-man roster is a given.

Although the Angels were shut out in the second game, they were still able to plate 15 runs in their three-game set against the Pirates. Here is who produced how much of those 15 runs:

3.00 Moustakas
2.50 Ward
2.00 Moniak
2.00 Rengifo
1.75 Ohtani
1.00 Neto
1.00 Velazquez
1.00 Cabbage
0.50 Thaiss
0.25 Escobar

This is the first time Moose has led the Angels in Actual Runs Produced. After a decent start upon first joining the team, Escobar has been leaving himself out of the run-producing party these last few series.

Here is the update on ARA/BF:

0.06 Estevez (167)
0.07 Moore (115)
0.09 Bachman (77)
0.09 Soriano (74)
0.10 Ohtani (459)
0.10 Sandoval (412)
0.10 Weiss (21)
0.10 Joyce (21)
0.11 Detmers (415)
0.11 Canning (335)
0.11 Silseth (107)
0.12 Barria (242)
0.13 Anderson (420)
0.13 Webb (117)
0.15 Loup (127)
0.15 Wantz (96)
0.16 Davidson (148)
0.16 Devenski (140)
0.18 Herget (71)
0.18 Reyes (28)
0.19 Suarez (123)
0.21 Mederos (14)
0.23 Ingram (14)

Anderson lately has performed solidly as a #5 starter. Now that Barria is back on relief duty, he is seeing his recently bruised ARA/BF begin to heal.

The Angel position players and relievers have been frequenting the Injured List, but outside of Suarez and minor finger trouble from Ohtani, the Angel starting pitchers have been surprisingly healthy.

The Mets need salary relief. How about the shorter contract between Scherzer or Verlander for one of our non-Ohtani starters and a couple other lesser prospects who are far away from the MLB roster. Having two real starters makes us somewhat more credible in a playoff series. This gives the Mets some salary relief and a usable starter right away.

That’s an interesting take. Both have lower ERa’s than griff this year and Sandy had a 2.91 ERA last year and 3.69 the year before that. Reid 3.77 last year. Griffs best season was 3.99. FIP is even more in favor of Reid and Sandy.

Sandy from last year was closer to the “real” Sandoval in my opinion…

Also, Detmers’ ceiling makes it really inadvisable to trade him…

This is time when my Delusional Hyperbole occupy my mind waiting for Angels game, which thankfully starts at 3:40pm.

The east coast cable company whose name I have pledged not to pronounce at this site reported that Apple was huge factor in recruiting Messi to sign with Inter Miami MLS team. That made me look up that Miami Inter is co-owned by David Beckham and Masa Son, who is also the owner of SoftBank Hawks of NPB. Son and late Steve Jobs were BFFs.

Remember I posted yesterday about Apple considering purchase of Disney? Well, I may not be that far-fetched that Apple may consider having the same ownership of Beckham and Son to approach Moreno with an offer that is so good that Moreno cannot refuse. Then, Apple will move to take over all the broadcasting of MLB games with full approval of ManFraud. Son has been well-known to be interested in owning an MLB team.

Let’s just have Disney buy the Angels again, Apple takes on MLB streaming, buys Disney for BAMtech and the Angels come along for the ride and its kind of like the band is all back together again.

From what I read, Disney Plus (especially in India) lost gazillions of money in the midst of streaming service glut/competition, and Marvel films are not doing that well at the box office because they are putting out too many of them. Disney is rumored to sell its streaming service along with Marvel film department to Apple or be totally sold. (FTC will have some say if Apple attempts to buy Disney. I hope that Biden is a fan of Mickey Moniak.) If you have Disney stock, it may be time to buy more before the purchase by Apple.

Mostly my comment was tongue-in-cheek, but as far as Disney’s troubles go, I think its less of a competition thing and more of a holy-crap-this-movie-sucks thing with nearly every release for the last 2-3 years. I don’t know anything about their troubles in India.

I think their stuff just stinks now and my 8 and 5 year old seem to agree. Except Bluey. Bluey freaking rules. Oh wait they licensed that lol

Speaking personally, there’s a limit to how much effort and attention I will dedicate to something that I have no control over, something that technically is someone else’s job. There’s also a little bit of defeatism there as well, kind of like how I think trying to day trade the stock market is a waste because there’s hundreds of veritable geniuses who will figure out how to beat me to any wins long before I even finish picking my nose.

What Perry does with Shohei feels to me a little like that. It’s his full time job, he’s got a team of professionals crunching the numbers, and he’s got way more info and experience than we can come close to. Not that it isn’t fun to speculate and opine, but I have my limits to how much energy I personally will invest. It is what it is, and Perry will make the decision he feels is best for the club, he’s not some saboteur.

The only difference between those ivy league wolfs of Wall Street and the Angels is that even with all the data, experience, and resources, I’m not confident that they’ll get it right when all the dust settles given their track record! 😅 . Here’s to hoping!

To balance out my positivity with a dose of “reality” I will admit …

Our pitching is bordering on atrocious for a playoff hopeful.

If we perform well enough in the next week to justify adding pieces, Perry should be buying 3 legitimate bullpen arms. Probably use another starter as well (Giolito).

A few weeks back Giolito was the stealth move in any trade talks with the Sox. While most teams were on the Cease train. He has been straight shoving in his last few starts (minus a Mets meltdown) to the point that he now might be the most desired starter at the deadline. But I agree we need a starter and at least 1 pen arm if we keep Sho and want to make a run.

It would also be sweet to get a 1B with some thump. A reunion with CJ Cron would be dope and we seem to be cool with the Rockies and swinging deals already. We all know Rendon is not coming back and on the off chance he does, he should be a part time player.

Neto – SS
Sho – DH
Trout – CF
Moniak – RF
Drury – 2B
Ward – LF
Cron – 1B
Mous / Rendon – 3b
Ohoppe / Thaiss – C

One caveat is that 2nd half of the lineup might be the slowest grouping of dudes in baseball history while everyone is going back to the speed game.. But sometimes you gotta zig when others zag.

Get a few big hits. Get a few big outs. Don’t shoot yourselves in groin. DO NOT be the other teams buddy. A guy or 2 needs get hot. Renfroe is due to hit again, please, stop hibernating, wake up. Maybe Rengifo is heating up? Ward needs to get a few big hits this trip. And get healthy, get Neto on the field and get Drury back. Those two can make a huge difference.

I’m so tired of the constant Shohei trade talk. I think the Angels should go for broke and be buyers. Try to get another solid starter and more bullpen help. I know it’s the Angels, but being only 4 games out of a playoff spot, they have to go for it and show him that they are committed to winning. Not only would there be a better chance of playing in October, but maybe make him feel better about possibly resigning with the Angels.

We need help in the BP more than anything. I’d think we’d use our limited resources to get at least another arm. Someone who can replace Webb or Reyes, that can work the 6th or 7th and get outs. Doesn’t need to be an all star, just better + than them.

Why Tucker Davidson still has a spot on this roster is mind boggling and needs to be investigated. Honestly, have they forgotten his on the team? Make the dancing Barria the long guy.
Need to hope that Sammy B can come back at least be an option more nights than not.

He has only pitched 2.2 innings for us in July (1.1 on the 3rd, and 1.1 on the 15th). If we have him, he should pitch. If he can’t pitch (because they don’t trust him), run him through waivers or DFA – we need live arms to compete.

This has been my basic position since Spring Training.

If they’re “in it” with the best players in the game and a declining Trout, they should go all-in now.

Of all the team sports, getting hot and playing well at the right time can result in a World Series championship – even for less
talented squads, unlike the NBA or NFL where the better/best teams typically win in the end.

I would actually agree with you in other circumstances.

What has me taking the exact opposite opinion is two things:
My definition of “in it”
and
The possible value that can be returned by trading pieces we have is much higher than the usual Angels’ July.

My approach is a gamble, I acknowledge that fact.

Yes, and indeed I acknowledge that the young players we’d receive in a trade are a gamble too.
Everything is a gamble. Any player could suddenly walk away from the game like Buttrey too. You and I are just looking at the odds and forming our opinions based on what we feel most comfortable with.

However getting prospects in return is a gamble as well. If they trade him, they pretty much guarantee he will sign elsewhere because they are giving up on the season. If they improve the team to make a run at it, he at least sees they are willing to try to win and possibly keep him.

Ah, and there is the piece that sways you and doesn’t sway me, which makes sense why we disagree.
I do not necessarily have any interest in signing Ohtani.

Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t that I don’t want the greatest player I’ve ever seen on my team. I’m very bummed.

I’ve just accepted the reality that with this owner Arte, that it does not seem at all a wise decision to add a $500 10yr contract. We just had 10 years of that with Pujols. Arte will surround Trout, Ohtani and Rendon with Squids, Capt Jacks, Wades, Duffys, etc etc.

We (almost) desperately need LAD to take the next 2 against TOR.

It is in our best interest to root for a HOU sweep vs TEX. It would result in both teams having the same record and HOU has a much easier September schedule. TEX is also banged up pretty bad.

Rays are 4-14 in July and their next 5 games come against MIA and HOU. If they keep reeling … 👀👀

By any means necessary LAA has to win this series in DET.

I guess that means if we got swept then we can start thinking about partners in an Ohtani trade ?

I’m waiting for the group-think to morph towards “Platypus can draft a great potential replacement with a compensation pick in the mid-60’s……”

The truth isn’t usually Joyful. In todays world, the truth is funny. Being positive for the sake of being positive shouldn’t make you joyful.

Now, please stay off the grass. I just mowed it and I don’t want any of your dirty shoes prints on my lawn.

With certainty yesterday, local TV sports and Radio, claim Shohei is 100% singing with the Doyers next year, regardless if he’s traded there first.

Starting to believe them.

What’s the truth tho?

I posted the daily rooting guide and some notes on the AL Playoff race.

Being met with the same reply(s) day after day after day is exhausting. If you don’t want to engage intelligently about the Angels’ playoff chances, then don’t. It’s quite simple.

I’m not ignorant to Ohtani’s possible departure in a trade/FA. All I’m doing is following the Angels’ postseason hopes on an Angels’ fansite.

My opinion isn’t directed at you specifically. Just an observation and comment about the hopeful ones. All opinions are loved and supported here.

I, for one, always look forward to your post. I sometimes differ on who to cheer for, but mostly you and I are on the same ‘winning’ page.

I am happy that most people tolerate my mumbo-jumbo. Every once in a while, I even receive thanks for my translating Sho’s Q&A though it is exhausting task at times especially for elderly like me.

Keep up your good work.

What do “local TV sports and Radio” know ? I mean, you and I know alot more about this situation than they do … It may be that Shohei does sign with the Doyers in the off-season, but to say it is 100% just reeks of idiocy…

The other thing, (and I’ve said this before) there is NO way in hell that Arte will trade Ohtani to the Dodgers. That one you can take to the bank.

Last night NBC sports guy, “paraphrasing” Shohei might not be traded here because “Idiot Arte,” but he’s likely going to to sign here as a FA.

Don’t remember the radio station yesterday, they all sound the same…..they were saying…. I know a guy, who knows a guy, who works for the Doyers and they will never be outbid for him. And the Doyers poop is scent free and perfect in every way, so why wouldn’t he sign there knowing this. It’s a done deal, just not official yet.

Probably true.

But saying it is “probably” going to happen is not the same thing as saying it is “100%.”

I don’t think it helps us to have the Astros beat Texas right now. I think we have to root for Texas in that series … I guess if you expect the Rangers to really underperform the entire 2nd half and drop down to WC 2 or WC 3 territory then you can justify it, but as it stands they still have a 2 game lead in division and are less likely to be caught by us …

I put some real thought into this last night.

HOU is an absolute machine and after 162 games they will finish on top of the AL West once again. They have a stretch in September where 9/12 games are against the A’s and Royals. Furthermore, we only have 3 games left vs HOU and already lost the season series to them.

I would much rather try to chase TEX down. Seager and Garcia are hurt and their bullpen is objectively worse than the Astros’ pen. We can still win the season series against TEX (we are currently up 4-3) with 6 games left H2H.

Asstros were 66-35 at this time last year. They are “only” 57-44 this year. The kryptonite for them will be their SPs. Javier and Bielak are absolutely exhausted according Houston Chronicles. Unless they supplant SP arms by trade, they will not win World Series against Braves or Dodgers.

HOU may not win the WS, but will win the division. Whatever devil magic (some call trash cans) they got down there ain’t slowing down yet.

Let me sheepishly predict that AL West division title is not quite over for 4 teams.

ooo thats a hot take. If I had to predict the divisions …

East = BAL
Central = MIN
West = HOU

I think TB and TEX will be coming back to the WC pack in short order.

Yeah, the tie-breaker thing is one point in favor of your argument. Assuming we can play at least .500 in the remaining games vs Texas then we can win the season series against them … Of course that only helps us if we finish tied with them — and in reality that is highly unlikely based upon our respective records… But you may be right about the Astros overtaking them … I think the fact that they are playing this well without both Alvarez and the cheating dwarf would tend to support that line of thinking …
