Angels Win 8-5

There was no scoring through the third inning, but Shohei Ohtani allowed consecutive homers to back to back batters, Chu Man Choi and Henry Davis plus a single by Jared Triolo that didn’t amount to anything because of a couple of ground outs. 2-0 Tigers.

In the bottom of the fourth, Shohei Ohtani walked. Micky Moniak doubled, driving in Shohei Ohtani.

Taylor Ward walked. Mike Moustakas homered to make it 4-2 Angels.

Both Moniak and Ward scored. After a couple of outs, Trey Cabbage also homered to make it 5-2 Angels.

Nick Gonzales was hit by a pitch and Jake Suwinski homered to make it 5-4 Angels. The next three Pirates were out. In the bottom of the fifth, Zach Neto homered to make it 6-4 Angels.

Shohei Ohtani reached on a strikeout/wild pitch. Taylor Ward then got a one out homer. 8-4 Angels.

In the top of the sixth, Henry Davis homered to make it 8-5 Angels. Then we had a couple of strikeouts and a ground out to bring the Angels back up. A quick ground out and two strike outs brought the Pirates back up again.

They didn’t really do anything in their half of the seventh inning. Well, really nothing else happened at all. The Angels won 8-5.

Doyers beat up the Rangers today too literally. 16-3 and Seager hurt yesterday ( to the IL) and Garcia today . Might be testing their depth the next couple weeks while we hopefully get healthy .. keep chipping away!

Revised lineup (IMO)

Ohtani – DH
Moniak – CF
Ward – LF
Moose – 3B
Thaiss – C
Renfroe – RF
Cabbage – 1B
Rengifo – 2B
Squid – SS

Incredible how much a .250 hitting rookie SS impacts our fortunes.

Now if this was Burger King, I would go with:

Plummer – 2B
Ohtani – DH
Moniak – CF
Ward – RF
Moose – 3B
Thaiss – C
Renfroe – RF
Cabbage – 1B
Squid – SS

I think we’re better off defensively with Squid covering ground between Moose & Plummer.

Internal bleeding for Rendon.

Chance that Rendon negotiates a buyout and retires? Would love to free up $35 million off the roster.

Ohtani could get a $20 million raise, keep a cheap OF payroll of Adell, Moniak, Ward. IF will be Neto, O’Hoppe maybe Schaunel . Cabbage , Adams, Stefanic play the other spots. .

I see Rendon’s left over money , Loup and Renfroe’s money for Giolito. Would be a massive development.

I assume the followings. This information is either via Nevin or via Sammy through Nevin, who are not quite physiologically inclined or physical therapy oriented.

The bone contusion almost always involves some damage to the periosteum (outer layer of the bone which contains network of blood vessels and nerve endings). The impact (in this case, the baseball that was hit by Rendon) causes the blood vessels to break and forms hematoma (collection of blood). Hematoma, while it causes the inflammation and pain, contains white blood cells and reparative elements to start he healing process. Thus, the length of time required for healing is proportional to the size of initial hematoma.

Initial X-ray did not show hematoma; that was just to rule out fracture. With Rendon’s pain not going away after few weeks, I bet he underwent MRI, which is excellent in identifying hematoma and gives information regarding the size of blood collection. So, this is not that unusual, The initial hematoma must have been fairly large and the medical advice now is to give Rendon 2 more weeks and reevaluate. Rendon’s return is now at least pushed to the middle to late August. Would be interesting to surmise who will the first person that returns to action out of O’Hoppe, Trout, and Rendon.

This partly depends on standings as well. If the Angels remain “in it”, I think Trout is back in late August with O’Hoppe not far behind.

If their “out of it”, they’ll slow roll it, particularly with O’Hoppe.

I don’t know if this is a good omen. Yu Chang, who underwent hamate surgery earlier in the season has just hit a homerun. It bodes well for Trout, who is itching by now to swing a bat.

Difference between Angels and Doyers.

Hershiser was talking about how the Rangers in “real-time” are likely discussing the pitching situation being down (7-1 at the time) in the top 4th . He said the Rangers bench might (likely) talk to the GM from the bench, in game, to discuss pitching options for tomorrows day game. Basically, saying the Rangers capitulate, manage for tomorrow. Playing against the Doyers, I’m sure that’s true.

Change that scenario, Angels up 7-1, top 4, in Texas, the Rangers are not managing for tomorrow, they are managing to win todays game. And the Angels are terrified they will choke that game/lead away……And the Doyers, just go through the motions, and coast to a win.

Different trAditions, different organizations.

I had to check the date on the. Buster article. He conveniently cited 15% fangraphs Chance rather than 4 games out and noting that fangraphs chance was 7 % just 2 days ago. Chances go up exponentially with each win. This last few weeks has been a master class in media hysteria

Outside of the 2002-2009 window, I’ve never heard this much discussion about the Angels from the media. Most of it is understandably dismissive of the Angel organization. Haven’t turned on the radio in my car without hearing Shohei talk. And almost always with no regard for the actual team he plays for.

It’s become my #1 reason I hope he stays with us, so we can rub that shit it their face.

I dont think the Angels have had an international signing experience any modicum of MLB success since they signed Jamie Barria out of Panama 10 years ago.

But it would appear that cheap and evil Arte has finally released some of that strangle hold on the purse strings which could bode well for our future with the potential development of Quero as well as others like this guy. https://twitter.com/steve_wendt/status/1682608395088719872

He grades out as a 55 for speed so he is not a blazer. Understand his success leans heavily on reading the pitchers. Selective hitter, walks and strikeouts about equal, what’s not to like. Above average arm. 17-year old, crazy.

We’ll see if he survives the trade deadline. He would be a guy that I would ask for.

Ohtani is a great player and an incredible talent but he is overrated and his next contract is virtually guaranteed to be a disaster from a performance standpoint.
-He will be 30 the first season of the contract. Hard to overstate how much of a red flag that is
-He is a pitcher who requires a 6 pitcher rotation. Negates the myth of a saved roster spot, and guarantees that a below average (likely way below average) additional pitcher has to be carried. Instead of saving a roster spot, the reality is more like he costs whatever team he’s on an additional .25-0.5 roster spots- between the 6 pitcher rotation and him being a permanent DH who doesn’t play the field.
-He’s a permanent DH, which hamstrings the DH spot- other players can’t be rotated in to the DH spot for various purposes.
-He has averaged around 6 WAR per season since his debut. Yes, he has peaked in the last 3 years (and is having his best season in his contract year- ‘shocker’)- but that obviously will not last. He still has not had a season as good as Trout’s 2 best seasons and he will not remain nearly at his current level because of age (as well as possibly because of injuries).
-His value is relatively evenly split between being a pitcher and a hitter. That means that as soon as he becomes a 1 dimensional player (he likely won’t pitch for much longer, at least effectively), his value will go way down.

His next contract is guaranteed to be a disaster from a performance standpoint and he should be traded. In fact, he should have been traded by last season’s trade deadline at the latest.

Schanuel and a fair number of our 2023 positional draftees debuted last night in Arizona… sort of a group dress rehearsal, it looks like, before the team reassigns them to higher levels. Especially interested to see how Cole Fontenelle does this season… maybe a steal in the 7th round. Maybe sticks at third.
