It Just Got Away Postgame

Today we had Chase Silseth going up against Dean Junior Kremer of the Orioles. Junior came into the game with an ERA of 4.91 over 41.2 innings. His WHIP was 1.46. Silseth sported a 3.24 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP over a limited sample size of 8.1 innings.

Mickey Moniak led off the festivities with a solo homer. 1-0 Angels.

As the inning proceeded, things got a little less exciting. Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani both made outs. Taylor Ward singled, though. Matt Thaiss hit a fly ball to center for the third out. Defensively, Matt Thaiss threw a ball away on a pickoff attempt. The Angels got out of the inning still leading 1-0. They got Adam Frazier to ground into a bases loaded force out, Rengifo to Neto.

In the bottom of the second inning Ryan O’Hearn homered to right to tie the game 1-1. The score remained tied until the bottom of the fourth inning when Gunnar Henderson doubled and Terrin Vavra singled to right to drive him in. 2-1 Orioles. Chase Silseth threw a wild pitch to send Vavra to second with one out. Jorge Mateo singled on a grounder through the right side to score Vavra. 3-1 Orioles. At this point Tucker Davidson came in to try and stop the bleeding. The Orioles countered with pinch hitter Ryan Mountcastle who doubled to put men on second and third with one out for Cedric Mullins. Mullins grounded out to score Jorge Mateo. 4-1 Orioles. Adley Rutschman struck out to end the inning. Here is a breakdown of Chase Silseth’s pitches.

He did get five strikeouts in his 3 1/3 innings.

In the fifth inning, Gio Urshela doubled, Rengifo grounded out to advance him to third, and Zach Neto singled on a grounder to center to score Urshela. 4-2 Orioles.

Mickey Moniak grounded into a force out and advanced to second on a wild pitch whereupon Mike Trout struck out.

In the sixth inning Thaiss and Drury hit back to back two out singles. Gio Urshela singled on the ground through the right side and Matt Thaiss scored on a close play at the plate. 4-3 Orioles.

Luis Rengifo struck out to strand two. Tucker Davidson then hit Adam Frazier with a pitch and pinch hitter Ryan McKenna ricocheted a double off Davidson’s shin to put Orioles at second and third with no outs. Davidson was removed from the game in favor of Andrew Wantz. Jorge Mateo hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3 Orioles. Ryan Mountcastle homered to make it 7-3 Baltimore. Mullins popped out and Rutschman struck out to end the inning.

Zach Neto grounded out to lead off the seventh inning and Hunter Renfroe came in to pinch hit for Mickey Moniak. Renfroe also grounded out. So did Mike Trout.

We got to the eighth inning with the score still 7-3 Baltimore. Shohei Ohtani grounded out to second. Taylor Ward struck out. Matt Thaiss also struck out. Jimmy Herget pitched the bottom of the eighth and was effective. The Orioles went three up three down.

In the ninth inning, Brandon Drury hit a fly ball out to left. Gio Urshela struck out. Luis Rengifo grounded out. The Angels lost 7-3. Oh well. There is no word yet on Davidson’s shin status. Here is what that looked like.

I think it would probably be best if Arte sold the team to that guy who wants to get a team in Orlando.

So that they can be named The Orlando Dreamers.

WTF? That is the most stupid limp wristed Captain Planet name for a team I have ever heard of. Did they tell the Commanders to hold their beer? But if we wish hard enough I bet we can make it happen people. Donkey powers….. UNITE!

Things. They can get worse.

BTW Walsh, (1) Adell (14) & Cabbage (12) went back to back to back tonight in the 8th at the great Salt Lake to help erase a 6 run deficit.

That was Cabbages 2nd home run of the night while Walsh also had two singles as part of a 3 hit night for him.

Depending upon how hes feeling he maybe meeting the team in Anaheim this weekend.

It will be good to get Walsh back to load another leftie in the line-up along with Ohtani. The glove will certainly help too. Urshella is a negative at 1st in my eyes.

Like Corky from Life Goes On, I’m still commenting on the game thread.

Anyway, re: Neto. although he’s only at .242 / .309, he’s passing the eye & vibes test for sure and he seems to have that hard to define “clutch factor” too.

That said, let’s not straddle him with leadoff responsibility this year. Let him marinate properly in the 9-hole.

I have not read or heard anything negative on Neto yet on this site or others. Everyone appears to be in agreement that Neto is Angels shortstop now and probably for the foreseeable future. I also like him in the 9th spot though I cannot explain why. If I am forced to answer, I would say Neto as 9th batter presents occasional power, unexpected by our opponents because of his size (I think he might hit around 10 homers this season if he remains healthy) and if he gets on base, he is like our second lead off hitter who poses steal threat.

I’d bump him up in the line-up, need good ABs intermixed between the folks that display high swing and miss rates.

Tomorrow’s starter is Canning, who has been our tough luck pitcher. He had at least two games that he should have won but did not receive any run support. His last outing against Houston unraveled in the fourth inning (we were tied 2-2 with two outs) when he made an errant pick off throw to the first base allowing the runner to go all the way to third. After a walk, A weakly hit grounder to Rendon resulted in a single infield hit, runner on third scores. He then hit Maldonado by pitch, loading the bases. He was replaced by Herget who promptly gave up a single to score two additional runs. The score is now 2-5. This was the game in the ninth, Trout singled and Shohei hit two run homer with score 4-5.
Rendon and Renfroe singled with no outs. Phil decided not to bunt, or replace Rendon with Brett Phillips. Druly struck out, Thaiss popped out, and Urshela grounded out. Ultimate buttercup. I apologize if this short summary of the game nightmarish flashback.

So, here is what I was thinking. Canning is going to be on a very short leash because that is the reason why Phil has been saving Barria, who has not pitched for 11 days. He could have used Barria today, but he did not. The only logic left is that he wanted to use Barria whenever Canning is lifted.

Every game is important. It is still mid May. But tomorrow’s game bears extra significance in that with a win tomorrow (and the day after tomorrow), the Angels have a chance to let our foes in our division and league know that they are genuine contenders for a spot in post season. This could be the turning point where the Angels start bunching series wins. It will be a huge statement to do this to the second best team in MLB.

So we’re playing at pace to win 33% of our remaining games.

Delightful.

Both Trout and Ohtani were 0 for 4, 2Ks for Mike and K for Ohtani. It seems as though we had many losses when they go completely quiet.

go look at his stats last year during our losing streak. He looked beyond washed up back then.

He had an 0-24 or something at one point. Then had the back thing and then returned and absolutely punished the ball.

He’s very streaky now and far less consistent. Sigh.

Exactly he went 0-28 as we lost 14 straight. Never seen something that bad from great player in his prime or at at all really. During a historic losing streak when the season was slipping away, the most important stretch of the season and we needed our “leader” to step up and do something anything to stop it, to make sure the season wasn’t over by mid May he went 0-28 and was instead a prime culprit to the suck. But come September when we were 20 out, the games didn’t matter, and rosters expanded, sort of a glorified spring training for the teams 20 out he hit .301 10 HR to salvage his stats. Classic trout. Earlier in his career when we missed the playoffs but were actually in it until the end he’d slump in august September when it mattered most and went 1-12 in with solo shot in his lone playoff appearance . Classic trout.
