Angels Lose 15th of 16

Yeah so nobody put up a postgame, it is 1:30 AM and even though nothing about this game needs remembering besides the monstrous Brandon Marsh blast early on, a record of this contest now stands.. They started Diaz instead of Barria and then sent him AND Adell down after the game. Mets fans are loud. There, a postgame wrap-up!

Why Rengifo over Duffy? Duffy can hit and field better. Might be FO interference.

I am predicting that the Angels will win another World Series in 2025. That is because Trout will be the same age as Salmon was when they won their first world series.

During the 12 game losing streak we had

6 games were we only scored 1 or 0 runs
6 games where the bullpen lost the game after leading to the 7th inning

Nevin has only managed 4 games with a 1 – 3 record.

Hopefully, in the next 20 games or so, he can figure out how to get some timely runs across and secure better results from the bullpen late in games.

Over the last 16 games the offense has sputtered, the bullpen has been terrible. But, the starting pitching is still holding up fairly well.

I say there is still hope and time to turn things around.

Phillies have won 9 straight since Rob Thomson took over for Joe Girardi who was fired. Let’s see the Angels accomplish that in their attempt to turn things around in their remaining games. Pigs will fly before that happens…

Here’s a question. You want Adell up? Well, though he looks better right now, if Ohtani were to struggle again, and Ward turns out to still be good, what would you think of Shohei NOT DHing every now and again, trying Ward as a RH compliment to Walsh sometimes at 1B, and between DH, 1B and OF we get Marsh, Trout, Ward and Adell regular at bats with Walsh and Shohei sitting down once a week or so?

I think injuries will dictate any rotation but personally, Ohtani needs to play. Can Ward play 1st w/o hurting the defense? I’d be good with that.

Yeah, but we gotta get Adell like 10-12 ABs a week at least if he’s not playing every day in Utah… Ward n Walsh switching won’t pull that off.

This is a great idea. The key is if the Sho starts to struggle offensively. If he doesn’t, the scheme doesn’t quite work.

Replace Lagares with Ward and then it will be a good lineup. Hopefully we can start winning games again.

Cowboy26

Here’s my thoughts Adell being sent down. Rengifo is currently on paternity leave and probably is returning today. This would require the Angels to make a 26 man roster move unless Rengifo gets sent to the salt mines. Adell, Squid or a pitcher ( Diaz, Detmers, Wantz, Herget or Ortega) are the only players with options right now.Since we’re short on pitching, And everyone loves Squid & Rengifo Adell draws short straw.

Now when Ward comes back on Tuesday . (How do they really know which Tuesday?) Someone else from that above list will be going them. We know its inevitable that Adell will get sent back down but why handicap a pathetic offense by sending down someone who is showing promise with much better at bats this past week? And the deduced ball is really retarding HR’s You could see it with Rendon first At bat last night and many other balls hit by the Mets. But why send down someone with legitimate power. The Guys that are getting hurt the worst are mediocre hitters like Wade, Rengifo Lagares and Duffy who typically need favorable trade winds to get their obligatory 8 to 12 home runs per season in years past.

Cowboy…… I think sending down Adell reflects Perry’s thinking that playing Lagares and D Thomas (while Trout and Ward are out) gives the Halos a better chance of winning.

I don’t agree with this thinking.

Perry thinks that the team as it is can win. I think he believes that the Angels should make the playoffs this year with the team as it is constructed.

Perry is playing to win, to get to the playoffs. I don’t think he is throwing in the towel.

Frankly, I am not a Perry and his analytics fan. But, I am an Angels fan and hope that he is right about them making the playoffs.

“Perry thinks that the team as it is can win.” Yes, this is true. He has said as much, including most recently at the press conference introducing Nevin.

In fact, with our key pieces healthy; Trout, Ohtani, Ward, Walsh, Rendon our offense is quite good, despite the weakness of the lower third of the order. Also, we need our SP and bullpen to pitch like they did in April. It may seem like alot to to ask, but remember this was all working together for like a month.

Unfortunately the 14 game losing streak meant the firing of Maddon and basically killed our chances. If we had won just a few of those games this could have been very different.

For everyone upset about Adell, this how I see it, we have 4 OF positions and 3 are regulars. You have Trout, Ward and Marsh with a #4 that doesn’t play everyday. Everyone seems to agree that Jo needs to play everyday, so we can send him to AAA to play everyday or we can trade him or we can turn him into a 4th OF’er or we can trade Ward or Marsh to clear an everyday spot for him in the OF

I’m excited about the progress Adell has shown but I think Admkir is right, he’s not gonna start over our top 3 and we shouldn’t mess too much with his groove right now. Get him back “home” to SLC and keep him playing constantly.

It’s laughable that a site that has made it it’s personal mission to shit on Adell is now gonna complain about being deprived of Adell for 3 days. Adell’s going down and Lugares is staying because of defense. That’s fine, Adell will hopefully solidify in SLC for a while longer and come back up looking good on both sides of the ball.

Losing 15 out of 16 with zero offense has made me realize the importance of Adell to this particular roster. Since Lagares has degraded as a defender he has no real value. I think we should put the best 26 on the roster because we no longer have the luxury of time or any margin of error. I am now prepared to accept Adell’s floor in the hope of getting his ceiling. He has advanced since opening day. He will always be more Manny Ramirez than Brandon Marsh in the OF, but that works when we’ve already got so many automatic outs in the lineup. Having Marsh available to PH when he doesn’t start is nice as well.

The write up is perfect, considering the game. Sending Adell down and keeping Lagares up makes no sense considering we have nearly entered the lost season part of the schedule . I know Minasian is dedicated to having crap on the roster, but why didn’t we pick up Willie Calhoun off the wire and give him a shot. He can’t field either but at one point he was a top prospect.

Perry only likes the players he drafted, the manager he hired, and the coaches his manager hires. Honestly if Adell isn’t going to get major league at bats – trade the guy.

JackFrost

Kinda agree. It seems like Perry is jerking Adell around for some reason.
Did Jo accidentally look at Perry sideways or something? Yes, Adell is challenged defensively, but our offense is struggling so badly that any bat in our lineup that is halfway decent needs to be kept there. And it is not like Lagares has been flashing his former Gold Glove caliber defense.

Makes zero sense to do this..

Totally agree. The Angels are showing a Bubba Gump Bro Love Movie on the Video Board between innings that is very cute. I like the way the feed off of each other to bring new energy.

Although I noticed that the gold plated fat ass found another gear on the bases last night so maybe Adell’s presence helped motivate him as well.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  DowningDude

Totally unfounded and baseless theory, but I think maybe the idea is to keep Adell in his zone in SLC for a few more weeks…. not break his mind the next time he blows it in the OF under the big lights…. while Ward comes back and is hopefully good.

Adell develops a little more confidence. Ward develops a little more trade value. Ward or Adell can then be traded in a package for pitching help. If it turns out both get kept and both are good, this is also nice. But this way we have the most chances at a positive outcome.

DowningDude

I hear ya. But cowboy has a point … the marketing of Adell was apparent last night. The BFF video was moving, you had to be there.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  DowningDude

I do believe it. This is even more completely out of my ass conjecture, but I think they are really invested in Adell and are managing the shit out of his mental fragility.

I think, when they sent him down, they told him something along the lines of “Go to SLC and kill it. Learn and learn and learn. You will start for us eventually so don’t stress. When there’s a couple games for you to play up here we promise we’ll bring you up for a taste. Don’t stress about your future, just play, in SLC and here. We’re backing you in both places. Don’t panic.”

A video like that takes a guy like me a few hours to make if I don’t need to shoot the footage myself. It probably meant 200 confidence points to Adell.

You gotta remeber, long term, Adell and Marsh both fully developed is 50-70M a year of OF production at pre-arb prices. That can do this FO a lot of good.

Keep hearing these ANGEL MEDICAL/INJURY RUMORS (proceed with caution) that MR. Ward is playing on Tuesday. Assuming Fattish Trout is playing tonight, that means they got the band back together in the OF by Tuesday. I personally would rather have Gold Glove sitting the bench and being a defensive replacement/pinch runner, hitter and have Adell playing everyday in Sodium Lake.

Now with that said, why in the !F! don’t they do this on Monday is beyond me……All I can come up with is TrAdition.

They could have kept Dillon Thomas up and let Lagares go, if it is just pinch running and a potential defensive replacement. Still frees up a 40-man spot (and gives Thomas a shot at sticking – which we know Lagares can’t handle now as he is no longer good at his main selling point – GG Defense).

Too much logical! I have hated Adell in durr MLB for evah, but now he play some good innings. He is magic. I need those extra two days of his magic!

All jokes aside, I think they are being very careful with Adell’s mind. He’s obviously very talented, and he has obviously totally vapor locked at the MLB level to this point. I think they are letting him be comfortable in SLC, then bringing him to the MLB to get a taste, then sending him back to the woodshed, rinse repeat.

It’s not screwing with him. It’s training him. Expanding his comfort level. This way he will hopefully not fall apart next time he takes a bad rout in the OF and blows a play.

Expansion teams are better than that

Speaking of expansion, the Royals first pick in the expansion draft was a hard throwing right hander from Covina, Roger Nelson. He was drafted off the Orioles squad, who chose to protect a young player named Don Baylor. Unfortunately, Nelson had injury issues which cut short a promising career

You’re missing the point that the company plan is for Adell to play every day.

Still could have sent Jo to Salt Lake, DFA’d Lagares and kept Thomas on the bench instead. Gives you another 40-man spot for a pitcher.

Do we have a pitcher we want to put on the 40 and expose if he has to go off of it?

Probably not long term (Davis Daniel is the closest, maybe), but gives you the flexibility to use Moran, Mike Mayers, Grant Dayton or Cesar Valdez (or at least have them available if a game needs to be a bullpen game) in a situation where the pen is gassed.

Lagares would pass through waivers – the guy just isn’t that good anymore

It makes perfect sense if the goal is to get Adell as much playing time as possible and Trout and Ward are coming back.

Hey, let’s not get greedy. Win streaks don’t last forever, you know.

The Apple “announcers” remind me of sitting next to annoying people babbling about nonsense until having to say “Hey, could you keep it down? I’m trying to watch the game.”

i completely agree. In their case, I’d probably look for empty seats in the section and just move there.

It did give me a night of not having to listen to O’Neal not eating the microphone with his amped up phony excitement calls

I prefer his to Steve Psychotic’s amped up phony excitement calls back in the day or Vasergian getting excited for the other teams calls.

And Psychotic’s massive Yankee love, along with “Hud” and his same tired 4 stories… IT’S A PLAYOFF ATMOSPHERE HERE AT THE BIG A!!!, as the Angels face the Baltimore Orioles in a matchup of 4th place teams.

Huge thanks to Apple for making this game too inconvenient for me to switch back and forth with basketball and letting me skip it.
