Ohtani near perfect through 6 as Angels blast off from Space City

Angels 6 Astros 0

The Angels launched early, scoring 6 runs in the first inning. Of course, they were aided by some walks but throw in some well timed hits and you have a rally to start the game – and all the runs the Angels needed to pull off the victory. Jake Odorizzi couldn’t even make it out of the first inning – he was space dust.

Tonight’s victory gives the Angels a series victory and plants them 1.5 games ahead of the rest of the AL West. Until today, the Angels hadn’t won a series against Houston since September 2020.

The real story of this game was Shohei Ohtani whose perfect game bid was broken up in the 6th by Jason Castro who had gone 0 for 9 to start the season. He also tied a career high 12 Ks. His slider was nearly un-hittable. His stuff was plain nasty.

Ohtani also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double, walk, and bunt single.

Other non-Ohtani stuff happened in this game – honest – I looked it up! Brandon Marsh was 2 for 2 with a walk and a double. Jo Adell stole a base. A few other guys got hits. I think that about covers it. This was Ohtani’s game and it was beautiful.

Great win! Hopefully the team can use this to propel themselves to even greater heights or certainly higher than the last 7 years.

Lots of peeps commenting which is nice. I’d think at least some peeps would be too busy polishing up their managerial resumes since they know EXACTLY how to manage an MLB team.

Well, a certain person who shall remain nameless is busy polishing up his GM resume, so he can use his time machine to fix our team.

Nice win!

Not to be a Debbie Downing or anything but the team presently exceeds my expectations. Book me a strip of playoff tix!!!!

I’m usually pessimistic but this was a promising win. Quite a bit of positives to take and to mention negativity in this thread in some self righteous manner is someone looking to get their rocks off in a sick way.

Enjoy the win tonight – we may suck tomorrow but tonight was a blast. Thanks Ohtani!

Great win! Ohtani, what a nasty beast! Marsh is turning into a stud right before our eyes. Ward is raking, making the draft room celebration gif finally coming to fruition. A win here without Trout is huge, he doesn’t need to carry us. I bet Adell even gets going against Baltimore, although he’s gonna have to fight for playing time. Enjoy it now people!!

So far the Halos doing what they are supposed to do.; play .500 against good teams (3-4, albeit it’s just the AL champs) and beating up on the 2nd division (5-1)

Everybody just needs to relax…this was game 18 of 162. Yes this is fun but it’s just a regular hot streak…nothing more. With all due respect to GYGOMP we don’t have the pitching to maintain this pace or anything like it.

Call me Mr. Negative, Downer Debbie, or anything else you would like. But I prefer Phil the Pragmatist. I’ll stick with my 83-85 wins this season. You cant win the division in April…talk to me in September.

Yeah, standings at this point are insignificant but I see some folks follow them religiously. All-Star game is a good heading check. There are good signs for sure but defense and a consistent productive lineup can hold the Angels down. The biggest threat, could be Maddon himself.

Starting pitching and the late bullpen strength has improved. I think that is a huge positive step but long season. Little concerned about the unsettled middle infield, platooning and defense.

It’s a nice start, but les than 20 games. So no play off tickets yet.

On the other hand, after 13 games, it’s pretty obvious Rendone’s done for good and doesn’t care about baseball anymore. Also, Trout’s done. As is Fletcher. And Thor…. he’s just tricking us.

JackFrost

Hmmm. Sarcasm again. So, what do you really think Rendone’s WAR will be this season? If you say 3 WAR or anything higher I will take that bet.

Ha ha. Why? How exactly is Maddon the “biggest threat?” Other than the fact that you just don’t like him for whatever reason…

Dude Ohtani mixed it up against a team he hasn’t beaten and the Halos have struggled against. Showed off his secondary pitches. No love for that? Cmon man! With the standings the way they are, this was a statement game and series. Sure, it’s early but there’s some guys on the Halos that need to witness and be a part of winning ways vs being blamed for losing. This was a first of many steps forward, but needed if this team wants to make the playoffs.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Um, yeah. First, Oligarch. Second, that would be what? 98, 99 wins. Unless there’s a whole bunch of magic this year we’re not winning 99. I think, even with some bumpy outings, our pitching looks improved, but I think 90 wins would be a pretty big upswing for us this year.

Also, yes, respect me.

How do we not have the pitching? Ohtani is a top 10 SP in baseball the way he’s thrown the ball since last year’s All-Star game. Put his newly-improved slider with the splitter and you have 2 near impossible to hit pitches. Thor hasn’t even regained his velocity and he’s off to a great start…looking like a legit #2 starter. Sandoval has pitched really effectively. There were many who saw a breakout season for him coming and he’s shown so far there’s no reason to doubt him. Suarez and Lorenzen look like really nice back of the rotation guys. Detmers is a real wild card. If he lives up to his potential, we could really be tough this year and be serious contenders for the division. If he continues to be inconsistent, that’s all you can expect of a young #6 starter. Marsh and Ward to me are the difference-makers on offense. Both guys look like legit breakout hitters. Adell, like Detmers, a great unknown. High ceiling but high variability type. I like this team and we haven’t seen too much from Rendon, Ohtani and Trout, yet. It’s OK to be a skeptic but understand what you’re watching. The knock on this team was a few stars with no depth and not enough pitching. It’s super early but questions are being answered by this team.

I am a Baseball superstition person and see no need to mention a Perfect Game or No Hitter ever, especially after the 6th inning. I believe also that what is more important is that I respect that you can have your opinion and that you do the same for me and those who believe the same as I.

boyjohn

Of course, but people should be aware enough to know that these things are a relic of a long ago time when humans didn’t have the collective knowledge that we do now. And there is no reason for an announcer, whose job it is to provide information, to follow this ancient voodoo.

It’s ancient. It’s relic.
All I know is, having nearly thrown a handful of no nos back in the day, if boyjohn had modern shuffled his way up to me to talk about it it would not have gone well… especially after giving up one bloop single.

F***n wind.

To be clear, the tradition is that you can, of course, bring it up early, but as the no hitter progresses you just don’t acknowledge it and you don’t say the words at all right around the time you get to the last trip through the batting order. Talking about it in the 5th innings not that big a deal.

Lol. This is a game Bill Singer pitched in, probably before I was born ! I listened to alot of Dodgers games on the radio as a kid and I can tell you Scully never mentioned a No Hitter or Perfect Game in progress. I am not sure when he started that practice but it was definitely something he didn’t do, at least for the last 20-30 years of his career. At least every time I heard those games he did not mention it.

I think it is funny you had to go so far back to find this, lol.

Yes, as I said in the game thread he would convey the important information without having to say the forbidden words. He was very skillful. This boyjohn had to go all the way back to 1970 to find a time when Skully did not do it that way.

Lol. Again, you are going way back. This game was before the Singer game that boyjohn found. If you want to go search for something to try to prove me wrong go right ahead… I wasn’t around in 1965 so I certainly would not have heard this on the radio.

My statement was about what I had heard myself listening to Dodgers games on the radio. So, go ahead a find him saying “No Hitter” or “Perfect Game ” during Fernando’s No Hitter or the Hideo Nomo No Hitter or Jerry Reuss for that matter, then I will admit I was wrong.

Lol. I hope you guys had fun searching this out. I have listened to the end of the Fernando No Hitter and he says nothing about it until it is complete. No reporting of “a no hitter” in progress or anything like that..

But go ahead and waste hours of your life on trying to prove me wrong about a relatively insignificant point..
