LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Oakland “Crowd”

Get a load of the crowd in Oakland Tuesday afternoon.

The Inland Empire 66ers are playing .500 baseball at the time of this writing, as is almost everybody else in the California League South. The pitch clock is shaving about 20 minutes off of minor league games compared to the control games. Scoring remains about the same.

Pitchers On Injured List

“Good Andrew Heaney” only lasted two games. Alex Cobb has a right adductor strain. Paul Sewald went on the COVID IL. Paul Campbell has a right elbow strain. With Sean Doolittle it is the left elbow. Matt Manning has right shoulder inflammation.

Links About Catchers

The Reds placed catcher Tyler Stephenson on the concussion list after he was injured by a Luke Voit slide that some considered dirty. Meanwhile, catcher Chadwick Tromp cleared waivers so the Braves outrighted him. Mariners catcher Luis Torrens is now on the COVID IL so the Mariners have selected first baseman Mike Ford to the major league club.

Other Links

Mr. Perfect Roki Sasaki threw eight more perfect innings in his first game following his perfect game.

Supposedly, the two remaining Yankees holdouts are now vaccinated so they can go to games in Toronto.

Ben Clemens did the math. Apparently issuing a bases loaded intentional walk is not a good idea.

KinaTrax is hiring a Full Stack Developer.

Sadly, I am starting to slide a little toward Trevor Bauer’s end of the bench. Sure, he’s still a prick, but prick or not, did he break the law? Nope, apparently not. So when does his “leave” end? There comes a point when my dislike of the way a thing is being done starts to outweigh any dislike for the person it is being done to. Old Trev’s case is getting there.

And WTF MLBPA? Gonna do your job at some point?

Yeah. I know. “Hurrr der nar havetah break duh lar to git suspenders!” Cool. The MLB needs a year to figure out if they will suspend him? Are are they taking a year waiting for their PR firm’s reps’ eyes to roll back into place?

This is starting to fall into the category of “I may not mind this happening to a jerk like Bauer, but I should mind that this CAN happen to Bauer…. and any other player.”

Are you happy about the Angels solid start early in the season? Well stop it. Turns out even slightly elevated levels of optimism give some of the people who frequent this site ass cancer.

You don’t want some of these people to get ass cancer do you?

You don’t want to admit you wish some of these people had ass cancer do you?

Be a mindful person about the ass cancer some of these people may have that we in no way hope they have. Don’t say anything positive about the Angels until they have won their second world series in a row.

At that point, say one positive thing. Then please start complaining about how Arte is gonna bring it all crashing down.

Thank You,

Eventually everyone gets ass cancer if they live long enough. Sadly, you were sold a lie when you were told a prolapsed anus helps prevent it. All those awkward trips to the ER, all the rage and resentment they enflamed inside you, they gained you nothing but a small, silent, yet grateful fanbase.
They will mourn your eventual ass cancer if you live long enough… if they remember you at all. They’ll all miss you truckstop bathroom guy.

Not so fast. Bruce Zimmerman who is the starter for them tomorrow has pitched two games thus far and has thrown 9 shutout innings (4 innings in first game and 5 in second game) His ERA is 0.00. If Detmers gives up a couple of runs early he could be looking at an L.

9 whole innings? Give him the Cy Young! 4.71 career ERA

If only we had two MVPs to make his job as hard as possible.

Well hopefully he can make easy work of that Orioles lineup. He’s faced a ton of tough teams in his limited starts so hopefully he can build some confidence tomorrow.

Exactly, a clear sign of improvement is to punish the teams you should punish. A team has to do that before they can become a great team. No team is going to win them all, obviously, but you have to have series wins, with consistency, against the rebuilding/cellar dwellers.

I think Showtime wants to lead the team in steals this year. Competition is tight this year with Showtime, Caveman, Wade and Ward is trying too. No team goes 1st to 3rd better than us. Knocking in runners in scoring position has been the best in the last 8 years.

Who sits tomorrow with Trouty returning? Just a guess here, but maybe Ward to get the day off, if not then Adell, and with that said it will be Marsh. Wow, with Joe you never know do you. Playing second could be Capt. Jack or Wade or Duffy. Anybody’s guess who goes where, I have never seen the likes of this versatility on a team before.

FungoAle
Super Member

Agree, with Joe…you never know. When the spotlight is on, he’ll flabbergast the crap out of you.

Ward should make way for Trout, he should sit right next to Mayfield and Duffy. In due time, Mayfield and Duffy will drift back to 0220 and 0.250. Wade brings a little speed even though he has been thrown out 50% of his attempts. LH bat adds some balance. Fletch comes back, keep the Glove at short, Velasquez.

Keep Walsh and Adell in the line-up at all times, number 4 and 5 hitters. Walsh for his “D” and Jo for his “O”. Lastly, don’t move Jo around between positions and batting order. Dont make him think any more than he has to. Some mental things going on upstairs.

losangel

Reply to  FungoAle

Adell is going to be the odd man out. Poor defense, strikes out too much, seen too many fastballs right down the middle blown past him when he know’s it is coming. He may be better off in AAA rather than getting sporadic playing time. Ward and Marsh are on fire and Trout is Trout.

FungoAle

Reply to  losangel

No doubt he is abysmal at defense but his bat can be electric. Bottom half of the order quickly fades. Keep feeding Jo ABs, jerking him out of the lineup does more harm than good. We saw the Angels offense meltdown last year in the second half.

Either our players are slow, or catchers are getting better at throwing base stealers out. I hope Gil is working at teaching how to read the pitcher and getting a big jump because I sure hope we keep trying to steal second. Stealing and speed usually mess with a pitcher’s head and worries the catcher unless his name is Maldy.

Sure wish we had him back on our team but Suzuki has been a big surprise sharing the duties with Secret Police.

yeah Perry is starting to look smart.

if Arte won’t let him have a complete SS, getting a glove there made a lot of sense considering the offense around the diamond. Velazquez and Wade are both faster too than Rengifo.

Duffy was a steal. And our GM still won’t deal Adell/Marsh so high marks for that.

Noah and no mo? No more starters that is – but now a ‘pen with Bradley/Tepera/Loup/Iggy.

Perry is looking like he might have some aptitude for this gig.

If they come through OK and/or MiLB guys like Detmers, Canning and TBD hold the line for a few starts when we need them then we’ll know the team’s got some cake under the frosting.

another thing to remind everyone is he completely overhauled the training staff and brought in new people.

i definitely noticed a change this spring in Tempe:

Smaller groups for exercise/warm-ups – pitchers were in separate small groups and had a lot more time for stretching allotted –

it wasn’t the crowd of 60 players doing general stuff all at once for 15 minutes as we’ve seen in past years.

Listening to people that say April games are meaningless.
They beat the Asstros, when they beat them it counts twice because it counts in the loss column for the Asstros, remember you have to beat the good teams. You have to work the balance sheet, a win for us is a loss for them

Yeah, that is a definite. But I also think the teams sometimes outright lie to the public. The Rays did that a few years back when they were announcing 10 thousand fans when it was clear there were not even 5 thousand in attendance. Not sure about this but I suspect that MLB would not even give a shit or try to enforce that accurate numbers are reported.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  JackFrost

Sigh. This has been discussed many times. They announce attendance as tickets sold. Not people in the building. That “sold” number includes corporate and season seats that are sitting empty. This has pretty much always been the case. Teams don’t have to lie, they are like governments, they just tell everyone the true number that most truly makes them look best.

For example, my monthly cost of living, for the same stuff, is up 22% over March of last year…. inflation is officially what 9%? It also helps me feel good when they tell me how much the general cost of living has gone up…. but don’t include housing or gas. For the MLB there may be 2200 people in the seats, but 10,200 seats were paid for baby!

Teams can’t lie about ticket sales. They get into a lot of trouble when they do that. Ask Dan Snyder.

Well, they want $90 plus fees for tickets behind home plate in MVP prime (not diamond club). I believe those tickets were only $65 last year, but not 100% sure. Either way, it’s a big increase for an entire payroll that will make less than Max Scherzer does.

Wife and I went to SF in 2009 for a work conference (Oracle Open World or whatever it is called). We were flying into Oakland because, well, avoid LAX if possible.

Thought I would save the company a few bucks taking the BART from Oakland (station across the street from the Coliseum) as there was a stop a block away from our hotel in SF.

While the BART itself wasn’t bad, one particular person at the platform in Oakland was. Early 20’s female walking around the planform yelling into her phone, eff this, eff that, eff everyone. I’ll cut a b!tch over and over again. Did this for like 10 minutes until the train arrived. Yeah, we took a car back to the airport to come home. 😃
