Fletcher’s Glove and Adell’s Bat Empower Angels’ 8-2 Win

Dylan Bundy looked to continue to salvage his season against the surprisingly not terrible Tigers offense. While he didn’t do badly, giving up only 2 runs when on the mound, he lasted only 4 and 2/3 innings. Sure that can be blamed on Maddon being pull happy, but it wasn’t like it was 2020 Bundy out there. He didn’t even complain much. David Fletcher saved his bacon from getting too fried, making play after play in the triangle of shifted 2B.

Recap

Bundy’s Meh outing

Dylan Bundy vs the Tigers. Historically, he has an ERA close to 5 against them. But he has been pitching better as of late. Then again, the Tigers have been hitting better as of late. Angels had to face Casey Mize, who has been having a much better season than Bundy, but is also young and the Tigers will be trying to limit his innings. Neither would factor into the decision today.

2 Out Heroics

Ohtani started the game off with a first pitch single. He then stole 2nd. Fletcher grounded out. Walsh walked. Churches struck out. Ohtani then would have been caught off the bag but was called safe. Tigers challenge but the replay stood. So Marsh singled Ohtani in for the first run of the game, making Tiger fans furious!

Way to go bearded man!

Bundy in contrast, had a quick 10 pitch 1-2-3 first. 1-0 Angels after 1.

Things went not as well in the second. Ohtani had a 2 out walk but was thrown out at 2nd. Bundy had another solid inning in part thanks to Fletcher. Still 1-0 Angels after 2.

Give him the Gold Glove!

Fletcher, after making an amazing play, led off the 3rd and got an infield single. He then moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. Walsh walked, but was thrown out on a fielder’s choice by Churches. Marsh struck out, but Mayfield got a 2 out single to get another run across!

Tigers Claw Back

Bundy gave up a couple of walks and a hit, giving a run back. He did not give up the lead, however, striking out Miggy with 2 on. 2-1 Angels after 3.

The Angels had a fast 4th, going down in order. Fletcher had himself a busy bottom of the inning, fielding all 3 outs. Still 2-1 Angels after 4

Detroit pulled their starter before the 5th inning started. Of course it is because Fletcher lead off in the inning. Baseball works in convenient ways sometimes. He popped up this time. Despite getting 2 on with a Walsh walk and a Churches single, the Angels failed to score. Bundy allowed a double and a 2 out single, allowing the second run to tie the game. It was enough for Maddon and Bundy was pulled. He went 4 and 2/3, giving up 2 runs.

Battle of the Bullpens

Austin Warren came in to face the Tigers with 2 outs in the 5th. He allowed a hit to Schoop to put 2 on for Miggy. He was walked on 4 pitches. Thankfully, the next batter popped up. Tied at 2 after 5.

Suzuki had 1 out double and Ohtani was IBB-ed, putting 2 on with 2 outs for Fletcher. He struck out. Warren went back out for more. He was in a bit of trouble, putting 2 on, but David Fletcher saved him with another amazing play. Still tied 2-2- after 6.

Golden

Marsh hit one high, he hit it deep, and right into a fan’s hands… for a double because the fan reached over. The rest of the lineup didn’t drive him in.

So close…

Cishek came in for the bottom of the 7th, he got 2 outs but walked Miggy to a sea of boos. He struck out the next batter to finish the inning. 2-2 after 7.

Lagares reached on a bad throw with 2 outs putting someone on for Ohtani. He struck out to end that threat. Mayers came in for the 8th. He shut them down with a fast 1-2-3 inning. Still 2-2 after 8.

With the pitching good today, the offense needed to do something. Unfortunately, the offense has been offensive for a while now. Walsh Walked for the 4th time, Churches singled, and Mayfield walked to load the bases for Jo Adell.

Offense Wakes Up

It seemed like it would be another failed opportunity but, it wasn’t! Jo Adell shocked everyone and hit a Grand Slam to give the Angels the lead!

OH WOW!

It was a brand new ballgame and Suzuki went back to back!

THERE WE GO!

The offense has been so dead for so long, to score so much… and Lagares hit a double! Then Ohtani walked. Now Fletcher was up and he hit a single to drive in another run! 8-2 Angels heading into the bottom of the 9th.

WOW!

Mayers came back out to close it out. The Tigers went down without much struggle, just a single and the Angels win!

Upcoming

Two more games vs the Tigers with a 4PM one tomorrow and a morning one on Thursday. No real night games for a while. At least in Pacific Time. Please drink responsibly.

Pitched into the 5th giving only 3 hits and 2 walks. 2 runs, but Quality Start in my book.

Agree. He shaved a few tenths off the ol’ ERA

Any Bundy start we end up winning is a plus.

It is unexpected so it is always good.

Just watched the replay of Adell’s slam on MLB.com. Really liked the call by Rich and Gubie on that one. Definitely captured the emotion there. Liking Rich more and more, working well with Gubie.

Oh yeah, maybe we need to lighten up on Marsh a little. Seems like anybody that can hit one like that larceny triple-that-wasn’t is getting with the program.

So it was Goody who hit the liner that hit Bassitt. I hope Bassitt’s ok for both their sakes.

Why do people keep trashing Marsh on the game thread. He drives in a run in the first and hits what should have been a triple to the deepest part of the park, while playing centerfield defense on a rookie contract. Do they not like his haircut? I don’t get it. He’s a highly ranked prospect who is already showing good skills. I guess we could go back to Rengifo or Lagares, Cmon, give the kid a break.

I agree. I do not understand the prejudice shown against him on the site. Everybody needs to leave Cousin It alone.

One of the joys of almost never being in a game thread is I never even knew the Red Ass Army had decided Marsh is a bust or whatever BS they’ve landed on to be fustrated with this week.

What’d he get, 270 games in the MiLB then it was up to LAA? How could he possibly start slow?

The Tigers are still a work in progress losing team time for you to go back into your defend A*te at all costs rabbit hole. You have a victory ( Yayyyy!!! ) and maybe you need to go review our September schedule while your at it. We beat the Tigers, not the Rays, Astros, A’s, White Sox or Giants…….Bye!!!!

It’s just one dude who is consistently doing it. I understand that Marsh stole his girlfriend and his lunch money in high school, so he’s still harboring the emotional scars from that trauma.

Probably because he still doesn’t have a HR yet.
Once he finally does he’ll start hitting better, but defensively he’s good.

He is hitting .346.370.423 in the last 7 games. Is the HR the only sign of good hitting?

Bubba Gump starting to gel. Warren still looks fine. Walsh and Ohtani did not try to attack the fully operational battle station. If Detmers throws another solid game I’m going to have to learn to skip again.

I was watching the Detroit feed for this one, and the color guy apologized to the Asian community for saying something about Ohtani. I missed what he said. Was weird.

now I’ve seen it and I think it might have been a homerun. Glad it didn’t matter for the final score but would have been nice for Marsh
