LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Youths

Good morning Angels fans! Hope you feel better today. Have some links!

Angels News

The Angels won yesterday thanks to the youth on the team. Suarez pitched well enough, Jo Adell was back and better than ever, and Marsh looka to be breaking out of his slump.

youths

With the youth up on the MLB team, AAA is more barren than usual now. Still, Thaiss is now at catcher, which is where his future most likely lies, with the Angels at least.

Joe Maddon wants the team to play like 1985. Well the stats don’t quite live up to that. The Angels aren’t nearly as aggressive in the base paths as some other teams.

Stassi is getting love from Fangraphs again!

Around Baseball

The Dodgers hosted Houston and it got ugly. Really ugly. Seriously ugly. The fans have not forgiven or forgot for 2017 and the pandemic seems to have made tensions worse. Great going Manfred, you not doing anything to punish the cheaters caused this. Not that the fans are blameless or anything.

Something else that we ugly was the Cubs but sell off. Ownership and now former players blaming each other for how it went down.

Meanwhile, the Olympics were going on. The US beat the DR and advance to the semis.

Oakland and the A’s are still not divorced just yet. Talks resume, will they settled their differences? Place your bets now.

deGrom is injured. Even more injured than he was earlier. The Cy Young may slip from his fingers.

The prospects from the trade deadline are ranked by Fangraphs. New Angels are 54, 56, 60, and 62.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes!

I guess CRod’s demotion is procedural since the Angels can bring someone up from the minors for next Tueday’s double header. After that, probably his next start will be outside the 10 days so Presto! it will be like he had never left.

HIDDEN FUN NOTE:

While I will enjoy watching C Rod, Packy, Detmers, “The Three Amigos” etc pitch and Bubba & Forrest play and hopefully Jack Stefan too there is a fun side piece I am enjoying right now….

The Cincinnati Reds. They have some really exciting young players. They have a romance story we can all get behind with Mr and Mrs Red. They are nothing like the Dodgers, even their color is the opposite. But most fun is they are set up for an exciting run.

IF THEY ARE HOT they could chase down the evil blue empire in Los Angeles and edge them out for a Wild Card. Imagine the joy in Redsville! More importantly, imagine the shame in the Latrine! The Dodger’s remaining schedule is tougher than the Reds and the Reds are just getting back to full strength roster wise. This could be fun to watch for the last two months.

Will it happen? Probably not. The Doyers have bought about all the players they can in order to Yankee their way out of this type of thing. But wouldn’t it be fun to see the Padres and Reds edge out the Doyers and soak some facial tattoos with tears?

The answer is yes. Yes it would.

My customer was at the game last night. Guy I have friends in common with. He went to get some food and the concourse he heard a group yell “southside” something or other and start beating the shit out of another Dodger fan, presumably a rival gang member.

The Eagles built a couple of holding cells into their stadium. LA probably needs to do the same.

Again, sucks because I know and am related to a lot of Dodger fans who behave perfectly normal at games. And some of them are getting tired of this crap.

It’s so annoying that many Dodgers fan intertwine their fandom (if it’s even that, could be just bandwagon because it’s the “cool” thing) with their gang identity. So lame to me.

Didn’t they just do a huge renovation out past CF recently? I haven’t been this season but assuming they did what I read they were going to do I’m sure its pretty nice.

Also, Angel Stadium has long been in decline as well. Lets not talk like our stadium is some recent triumph to modern engineering.

I think the big take away for the rest of the MLB this season and last is that the Astros were obviously only good because they cheated, they are a busted out team now, and all the fan rage has definitely broken their spirits.

I think the booing actually helps them. In fact, in a strange way it helps them focus and motivates them.

We have heard many NBA players talk about how they like playing on the road because the hate motivates them (not that they need to be motivated, but it gives them extra incentive) to silence the crowd. The now famous single finger to the lips in a “silence” gesture is something alot of stars look forward to delivering to angry enemy crowds.

In their own way I think the Astros thrive off of this treatment.

Rarely. And it is odd. Generally MLB tries to play the first week or two primarily in better weather cities to avoid rain/snow outs. Not many better places than Anaheim.

You’d think that both the A’s and Angels would open at home quite a bit, just not against each other. I get MLB liking division rivalries to start the year but while our stadium sits in glorious sun there’s always some game delayed by snow or rain up North.

God damn! Why does MLB always have us opening against Oakland ? This year was the first time we did not open with the A’s in like 5 or 6 years, I think.

And even worse we follow with four against Houston. We always have a fricking hard couple of weeks to start. Why can’t we ever open with Kansas City, or Baltimore, or Minnesota?

I dont like it. The only possible positive is that most of our stars should be healthy.

Even had Manfred suspended the entire Astros team for a year Dodger fan was going to go Dodger fan last night. While I know a great deal of Dodger fans who behave like civilized adults we all know there is a substantial segment of their fan base who are simply criminal.

I’ve seen Dodger fans fight every opposing fan base I can think of. Once during a Marlins game when there weren’t any opposing fans, they fought each other.

The Angels increase police and security when the Dodgers are in town. So do other franchises. That’s pretty telling.

The Dodger franchise needs to be held accountable for not doubling security and police last night. They knew this crap was coming. Hopefully the do tonight. As you can see from multiple videos children were endangered and plenty of Dodger fans were hit with projectiles. The stadium simply isn’t safe for anybody.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I’ve never been a big Dodger fan but love the stadium. But one year we left from a USC football game to watch them in playoffs against St. Louis and we were wearing red since coming from the USC game. And even after the Dodgers won, fans kept going out of their way to come up to us to harass us until they saw we weren’t Cardinal fans. It was the dumbest thing I ever saw.

And it sucks because it is a nice stadium and most of us are huge baseball fans who wouldn’t mind catching a couple of games there each year if we felt safe.

As it is I go to a game or two with my boss but wear non descript clothing. The days of wearing Angels red are done. I have a kid at home.

We won last night and I never made a prediction, dang, Oh well I knew we would win anyway. Ditto for tonight I believe…. With Adell having a break out game and the Goose driving in 3 we were in good hands. Surfer Jose pitching like a veteran sure helped a lot to…..When Walsh returns I would like to see Goose in LF but I think that Eaton will get the most PT out in LF…..I would think Adell’s time for RF is here and same for Marsh in CF the rest of the way…..Trouty has a Baseball Heart but a body of Glass. I really wish that he returns next season at 100% and can play in 150 games and no injuries……Hurry Back Walsh we need you.

Hey, I’m optimistic! So much so that I’m a tool of The Man Arte Moreno! I liked the Rendon signing (still do). Liked our farm more than most and like it even more now. I really like what the young pitchers are doing and like the idea of pairing them with a healthy offense next year. I like that our team, in the future, has the revenue to actually retain some of our talent because of our evil owner. I loved our draft.

I was just never a manly man “play off or bust” guy this year because I am an actual man and understand the reality of the situation we’re in. I will be optimistic as a pig in short corn if the Angels, with all these injuries, can sniff .500 and then get healthy/better/younger next season. They’d be on their way then, but we’re still one or two big steps from going toe to toe with Houston.

I wouldn’t mind Cobb. Seems Cobb wouldn’t mind us. I’d take him for the right money. Him plus a trade for another starter to add to Ohtani and “the young ones”, maybe sign Robbie Ray or DeSclafani… sure, optimism abounds.

Resign Cobb, 1 year team friendly.
Run back Goose same ^
I’d bring back Gold Glove for a year.

Pass on Bundy and SS Iggy

#1 priority keep Pitcher Iggy. Find a new conditioning coach/trainer/training staff/nutritionist, everyone involved in team health, what we have is not acceptable. And until I hear something positive about Wise as a PC, need to replace him. To many young pitchers to not have a guru. Everyone claims these college programs are comparable to MLB teams in coaching, go grab the best one available.

Fire Matty V…..bring back Sutton, so we have something to complain about. Less bitching to be had about a 94 win team.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Twebur

I dunno. The CtPG autobitch seems to be to hate Matt Wise, and if we cut him and got a solid PC I’d be fine with it, but I’m not sure he’s that bad. I mean, as the season’s progressed, he’s obviously made some strides with Barria, Suarez and Sandoval. Sure, “derr bullpen is bad and I hate dat!” but how much crap do you expect him to spin into gold?

TapatioMan
Trusted Member

Without knowing exactly what a PC or HC are working on with their players, it’s easy to say they aren’t doing good enough based on results. But students learn differently and at different paces. Wise could very well be making a positive impact with some and not with others. At the end of the day the player is the one who has to locate or whatever.

What separates a generic pitching coach from one who is considered above average or elite? Is it that they tweak deliveries, mind sets, pitch usage, look at analytics and somehow put that into practice with their players?

Edit: Continued – Are some pitching coaches more like baby sitters? Making sure the player gets their bullpen in, “working on pitches” (and what are they even doing to “work” on pitches, throwing them in bullpens, trying different grips etc?), keeping track of their pitch counts and usage, knowing what type of hitters they succeed against? I feel like I don’t know enough about what a PC in our organization is asked to do to determine if he’s doing good or not. Results don’t paint the whole picture.

I think history has shown that being a pitching coach on a team that buys you Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, etc helps. Or being on a team with with Mulder/Zito/Hudson or Glavine/Smoltz/Maddox…. also, not getting weird and grapy with women helps.

TapatioMan
Trusted Member

Yea I agree.

So at what point is a PC good enough to turn a reclamation project into a solid pitcher, have a minor leaguer take that next step from AAAA to mlb worthy? Or are they simply baby sitters (exaggerating with that phrase) who don’t have much to do with a pitchers success or failure? Like, the pitcher will be good if he’s already good.

The Blue Jays fans for example, they seem to think that their pitching coach is a god. Because he has helped Ray be really good, among others. But what if Ray and co. are simply having good years because of non PC reasons.

I’m not saying PCs don’t matter. Not at all. I’m questioning what makes a good one.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  TapatioMan

Well, in my very limited experience with pitching coaches, and then looking at MLB guys, I can only make an educated guess.

I think a lot of it is “babysitting” or rather maintenance. The PC gets pitchers whose mechanics he has a good understanding of, watches how the pitcher throws, and helps him stay optimal, catches when his weight is shifting weird, or arm slot is moving in bullpen sessions, etc. Keeps him tuned up.

Robbie Ray, for example, is a very talented pitcher. If you can watch tape, see what Ray needs to repeat to stay at the top of his game, then get Ray to really feel that in practice, then he pitches well.

But if a pitcher’s just not all that good, has no real strengths, then I’m not sure a PC can do all that much.

It seems to me that the main issue many may have with you is that you have no appetite for fans complaining about things that are mostly nonsensical and out of the team’s control. Which I sympathize with. If a SP signs with another team, some might post here that the Halos blew it, not taking into account that the player has the choice on where to sign, and aren’t bound to the Halos if they make an offer. It can get a bit tiresome though as that is essentially your schtick, crapping on fans here for not-so-great takes. We’re all fanatics, not everything is going to make sense (see the comment yesterday about the idea that Trout and Rendon don’t want to play and are milking their injuries while they make a ton of $). Just my 2 cents as a mostly outside observer, and since it was brought up.

Oh don’t you worry, I can rage boner. I was (wrongly apparently) engorged with indignation that our only deadline trade was for Max Stassi in 2019. If we’d drafted someone like Benny Montgomery this year I was ready to throw poop all over my cell. If, for example, we get word Arte nixes a trade for a solid starter this off season purely to avoid paying him I’ll be annoyed.

But you’re right, the only thing that seems more silly to me than getting angry over things that a team can’t control or are just the short end of the baseball stick, or manufacturing things to be angry about in our own minds, is demanding that I also share in this anger. Just silly.

They may keep the Goose as a depth piece. He’s supposed to be an IF back up. He’s played something like six positions for us. His defense is understandably bad, he’s a stop gap. But he is a stop gap with an OPS well over .700.

We have bitched much less about far worse bench pieces.

I’d also rather have a flexible bench player with great defense over an average (flukey?) bat who probably doesn’t have a future with the team.

Besides pitching, we really need to find a super utility guy this off-season who we can count on. I was hoping Rengifo could be that guy, but his defense/bat have both been so bad.

Damn them though, even their super utes are all star worthy.

He’d be a nice addition. His market could move slowly, though, as he’s probably a lot of teams fallback for a number of places.

He could be Maddon’s new Zobrist and get lots of playing time here.

Taylor’s a FA this off-season? I didn’t know that. I’d be all over that (if the price was right, of course). We need someone competent in that role

I was actually hoping one of our deadline trades this year would land us a cheap super utility type.

Some team’s gonna pay Taylor more than we want to and play him more than we have to. If we sign him it will be because we failed to get much in the way of pitching, so I don’t want him even though I want him.

I finally caved and looked at his BRef. He’s actually EXACTLY what PTP should have gotten. PTP has Fletcher and he signed Iglesias. That’s SS taken care of with Rengifo in MiLB.

Goose is actually just about average at 1B, 2B and 3B and has a .683 OPS lifetime. So you don’t fall off a cliff if he backs up those positions. But he functions a lot worse when almost your entire starting 9 keeps getting hurt and you keep putting him in the OF…. then he suffers at other positions too, as expected.

It’s sure not going to be an obvious mistake if they keep him. Thing is, if they work Ward out at catcher, RF, 3B, 2B and 1B this off season then he is a better replacement.

Dodger and Astro fans deserve each other. Let them battle it out, we need to thin the herd.

Dodger fans reminds me of the quote “you can’t fix stupid.” or Forrest saying “stupid is as stupid does”. Over 50,000 people and among them thousands of people lost their minds.

Just incredible to me.

Why would our young centerfielder say that?

Throwing beer at each other in the stands, inflatable trash cans, returning foul balls, is a sign that the fans at Dodger Stadium are still crazy and dangerous and can not understand the attraction of risking injury to attend games there. It does really put a bad light on all of SoCal when this type of thing happens. What a low life fan base, imagine taking a your kid there to see a game. Was never like that when I took the family in the early and mid ’90’s. It is a shame.

100% agree. My son and I had such a great time at the game in Arlington with not one issue with a Rangers fan. They cheered for the Rangers, we cheered for the Angels, and everyone was pleasant. I’m a lifelong Angels fan, but it’s still just a freaking sport. Fighting over laundry is dumb.

I was at the first Houston game in Anaheim this season. Not only was an inflatable trash can thrown on the field, a real one was as well. Also, one of Altuve’s foul balls was thrown back onto the field. I had never seen a foul ball thrown back, only HR’s, and thought it was hilarious. I still do. So other than throwing stuff, Halo fans were almost as bad as Dodger fans. Houston deserves it, lots of pent up anger that only got worse after fans not being allowed at games last season.

To be clear, I’m against any throwing at or fighting opposing fans.

I also like the idea of throwing foul balls back. It sends a great message that souvenirs from cheaters are worthless. The inflatable trash cans are great as beach ball replacements in the stands, but keep them off the field.

And like you said, the fighting and throwing stuff at fans, is not acceptable.

How do you bring a trash can into the stadium? If the trash cans in the stadium aren’t secured, the stadium staff wouldn’t stop someone from walking off with one?

Weren’t they blow up trash cans?

It was a trash can from the stadium that was thrown on the field.

The trash cans aren’t bolted to the floor like the bar stools on the patios were after Dodger fans used them to bash people over the head. Maybe they will now.

They should serve helmet nachos in little trash cans for the Astros games.

It was a trashcan from the stadium. Somehow a fan grabbed it and brought it to the front row in right center field and was banging on it. I actually think him dropping it on the field was an accident, but can’t say for sure. The ushers in that area likely got a stern WTF?! from their boss that night.

It would have been great to watch someone grab a trash can from the concourse, walk through the concourse and down the aisle to the front row – without being stopped by an usher or security – and heave it on the field.

That is a fan friendly environment.

I was at the Giants v. Astros game on Sunday at oracle park. There were Astros fans there and I didn’t see any problems. Whenever Altuve came to the plate, it seemed like the entire stadium booed him.

Happy they got booed hardcore but can’t imagine why any LA-based Astros fan would want to go to that game. Does nobody remember we’re only a few years removed from Giants fans being curb stomped in the parking lot?

Curb stomped to the edge of death. Let’s call it what it was.

The low-life gang-banger culture there is sad.

It must have been around 2005 or 2006 that I went to an Angels game sitting down on the field level near the LF foul pole.

I was wearing my road GA jersey and Angels cap but was quiet except for a clap or cheer when the Angels did something good. There was alot; Vlad hit a 3 run bomb to CF in the 1st that landed on the black tarp.

The Angels offense exploded that game; Kennedy also hit a HR as I recall.

The final was something like 9-3 Angels.

Dodger fan was not happy.

Despite the romp I did not rub it in or provoke anyone. Me and my brother sat peacefully in our seats. But Dodger fans still felt the need to pelt me with peanuts from behind…

What a cowardly thing… Throw shit from behind so you can’t be seen!

True to life quote from about 18 years ago: “I went to the coolest party last weekend. I almost got shot.”

You guessed it, that was a Dodger fan. And yes, “shot” referred to bullets, not vaccines.

Yeah, if you want to watch the Astros play live just drive 30 miles to Anaheim, where they play like 10 games a season. No point in putting yourself at risk knowing it’d be a hostile environment there.
