LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: AL Reigns Supreme

Good morning Angels fans, how are you today? Sorry for the tardiness, have some links!

Angels News

Well I’ll be. 20 for 20 in pitching for the Angels draft. WOW. Angels no hitter.

The Angels have a new PBP announcer. Rich Waltz. Used to do Marlins until Jeter fired him. Was a fan favorite.

The AL won the All Star Game. Again. Ohtani got the win, but Walsh made the biggest play.

Ohtani is up for doing the derby again. Trout still doesn’t want to though. Despite it not going quite as planned, Ohtani did love the last couple of days.

Around Baseball

Manfred Ball may not last long. Or 7 inning DH for that matter.

The All Star Game was an AL victory with Vlad Jr getting the MVP. The AL has now won 8 straight and has been on a tear this millennium.

Before the game, they made a tribute to Hank Aaron. It is rather touching.

The results are in, the 2021 HR derby was the most watched since 2017. Things are looking up.

Anything I missed? Post below for upvotes.

my favorite baseball team after the Halos is the AL AllStar team.

After watching them get punked so much growing up in the 60s and 70s, nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing them repeatedly beat down those NL pukes year after year as an adult.

Great All-Star game yesterday. Conglads to Ohtani-san for getting the W for it despite being hitless in it.

About this year’s MLB draft & the team picking all pitchers, I’m like why did it take so long for the org to realize how important pitching is? Esp giving that it’s cheaper to develop them than to get quailty ones via trades & esp free agency.

Re Waltz

I looked up some old Marlins videos to get a feel for what he’s like, and he definitely sounds more exciting than Sutton or his possible in-house replacements. I’m looking forward to see how he does!

Although, side note, Waltz grew up in Northen California, so he may be an Athletic’s fan. With Matty V also being an Athletic’s fan, kinda weird. If Arte is trying to find out Billy Bean’s secret sauce, I’m not sure this is the way.

Here he does an interview with a couple guys on YT, if anyone is interested. I haven’t finished watching it, and not sure I will, but there it is.

Councilman Jose Moreno and Councilman Avelino Valencia need to go for a little tour around the USA and see what development around a Stadium/Arena looks like and see how it works. It’s not that complicated or evil you stupid dumb asses….shut your pie holes and get out of the way…..it’s a new F’u##ing stadium surrounded by some “hopefully” cool restaurants, bars, places to live, shopping, parks, etc….A place to hang out before during and after a baseball game and spend our hard earned money “stimulus checks” you dicks. Go get your palms greased on another deal.

a couple of years ago me and the boys visited Suntrust Stadium where the Braves play. They basically built the new stadium and surrounding retail, restaurants and housing from scratch outside of Atlanta. The place is incredible and was a lot of fun with a lot energy ( even with the evil parking garages)

If this is Arte’s main goal in completing this development I’m in definitely on board.

Not to go all conspiracy, but I’d want to know if Disney had any influence here. That organization is in dire need of additional OC land, and they’d love to get their hands on a parcel as large as the stadium site.

Seems unlikely when they’re still trying to get approvals for new plans for their current parking lots: https://disneylandforward.com/project/possibilities#newest-adventures

Oh come now. I’m sure this has nothing to do with special interests or making sure the right people get what they want in return for massive donations…. it’s not like the teachers union is involved here. These two guys are most assuredly just looking out for their fellow everyman and making sure we all get a fair shake.

He kept at least a run- maybe more from scoring!

2 outs based were loaded. That was 3 runs off the board.

So Jeter fired this guy Waltz along with Jeff Conine when he became a minority owner. It was a quick way for Jeter to distance himself from the old regime. Also recall firing other MLB Marlin vet’s who were on the payroll. I’ve heard this guy before on broadcasts, more polished for sure but can also can be bigger than the game in the booth sometimes. I think he is better than Matt V.

Is he on a try out or is he locked in?

The Angels have continued to sign players after the draft, with five more nondrafted free agents signed, including two college catchers, and three more college pitchers.

  • Myles Emmerson, C, Cal Poly
  • Kenyon Yovan, RHP/IF, Oregon
  • Kyle Lovelace, C, Houston
  • Matthew McMillan, RHP, UT-Tyler
  • Joey Walsh, LHP, Boston College

Yay, pitchers and catchers (sounds snarky, but not really–they are weak areas in the org, after all….)

Yovan’s pitching days are probably over. He led the Ducks in HRs this year. Shoulder problems kept him from pitching.

Re Sutton, who believed he had a one-year contract per The Athletic:

Yes, it sucks, but this is exactly the scenario the Angels had to have imagined with they moved on: getting a highly-touted replacement midseason who has the chance to carry on in the future. I’m pretty happy with the outcome.

So he gets paid for the full year. That’s what the contract was for, just like Pujols.

Maybe he can get picked up by the Dodgers, pro-rated of course

Still something very strange about this whole thing. Was this initiated by Bally or The Angels? And what was the reasoning? Social media complaints? Ratings? Rich Waltz is a friend of a Bally executive? We will never probably know, and neither may Sutton.

Yeah of course we’ll never know, but FWIW, Sutton believes it came from the top:

Sutton said he believed it was an Angels decision, and suspected it came from the top of the organization.

“I know it wasn’t on the baseball side. We always communicate with [manager] Joe [Maddon]. It’s a pretty small organization,” Sutton said. “And very few people, I think, in that organization, have the power to influence something like this besides the highest level.

“So it’s my assumption that it was leadership at the highest level, in ownership.”

😂 that’s where my money is if I’m betting. He did say he cannot reveal his identity or something and knows something about broadcasting. Sounded pretty high level on its own albeit on a baseball fan blog.

Excited to hear the new guy but I’ll be attending so many games coming up that it will be an overall non-issue still for me anyway.

I also hope the broadcasters can start going to road games … It’s one reason why i think broadcasters suck overall right now … Hard to get the call right if you’re thousands of miles from the action.

Hopefully with this new guy , the BSW broadcasts don’t become ” Live from my basement in Florida, its Angels Baseball”

Our GPB….or “Arte” Grandpa Baseball?
Listen to enough baseball on radio, MLB TV, Doyers, others, and hear he was noticeably different in his delivery and shtick. He sounded very rehearsed/scripted, attempting to be different. Don’t remember him being anything but normal on the radio long ago.
You’d think Sutton would have known that the Angels Arte’nt a normal MLB franchise. I’d say his firing was perfectly normal, perfectly natural for the Angels…..trAdition

One way to make MLB better is to stream the all-star and playoff games (Not to mention stopping stupid blackout rules for MLB)! I bought MLB this season but the All-Star game was not on it, nor apparently will the postseason. If they want new blood to like baseball, how about putting the games on the internet so those without cable can watch Ohtani and fall in love (or in love again) with the sport? Fire ManFredBear and show the games on the interwebs like the NFL does!

Sorry bub, that’s not going to happen until all of the contracts with the individual teams end, which will be never.

Same thing pissed me off so I decided not to purchase MLB.tv this year. Naturally, a relative found out and decided to get me a subscription for my b-day. That’s a nice gift and all, but it also kind of defeats my attempt at refusing to support the MLB until they fix their broken blackout policies.

This year they added the new twist that if you have a subscription to a cable channel that would let you watch the game when your team visits the local blackout market, you can pay an extra $10 to watch it in MLB tv instead. But if I’m already able to watch the game because I already pay for a cable subscription that includes the local team’s broadcast, why in the hell would I pay extra to watch it through the MLB tv app instead?

Get a digital TV antenna, they’re like $30. Then you can have basic cable, which is how I watched the game last night on Fox. I can also watch most NFL games, except MNF since its on ESPN. The NBA finals were on channel 7 as well. All for the low low price of $30 I spent a few years ago.

I use a free site for games that aren’t on basic cable. I’m sure a simple google search would lead you to several options.

I agree with you regarding the blackout rules, they’re total BS.

That’s great, unless you don’t have a direct line of sight to the broadcast antennas.

But then I discovered locast.org. Gives all the local channels.

Yeah, for those of us living in the sticks, locust.org and the digital antenna do not work.
