LA Angels Tuesday News Crash

Has John Mozeliak finally found the right lineup protection for Mike Trout? Is it just time for Mike to move away from center field? Anyway, is what the Angels are doing a true tanking strategy? Mason McGwire had a nice game at Tri-City on Saturday. The Angels selected the contract of left-hander Sammy Peralta. Shaun Anderson is on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

The post season schedule is out. At the time of this writing, the Angels are only 14 games out of the Wild Card.

Here comes another Field of Dreams game.

The Athletics designated Jonathan Ornelas for assignment. The Astros claimed Nelson Velazquez off waivers from the Cardinals. Giants catcher Daniel Susac has a fractured patella. Ouch!

The Braves released shortstop Jorge Mateo. Speaking of shortstops, remember Tim Anderson? He suddenly retired.

Right-handers

The Athletics signed Matt Sauer to a minor league deal. Right-hander Casey Lawrence opted out of his Mariners contract and was released. The Royals released Justin Topa. Michael Soroka is back from his glute injury. Shohei Ohtani has begun to play catch. The Cubs DFAd Jake Woodford to make room for Ryan Zeferjahn, he cleared waivers, and elected free agency. The Diamondbacks will designate Paul Sewald for assignment. Somehow Craig Kimbrel got another major league job. The Mariners claimed Nolan Kingham off waivers from the Rangers. The Marlins claimed Wikelman Gonzalez off waivers from the White Sox. The Blue Jays selected the contract of Simeon Woods Richardson. Nathan Eovaldi is on the injured list with right posterior elbow inflammation.

Left-handers

Chris Sale got himself ejected from a game before it even began. Jomboy has a little bit of video for us. The Dodgers selected the contract of Charlie Barnes.

Didn’t see this linked yesterday – rosenthal penned a story in athletic (free) about the Angels teammates being at Trout’s golf course as they found out they were being traded

Jacob Wilson’s 111 games at SS without an error is insane. So much so, I had to go through his infield singles. Suspecting there were some that should have been errors, I was pleasantly surprised. One semi slow roller he sat back on that should have been an out if he attacked it, and one over the shoulder fly ball that went off his glove – I expect that ball to be caught – but not an error by definition. Now, do I think he has good range? Nope. In fact, I’d rank it below average. But if he can get to the ball – he makes the play. Congratulations to him – quite impressive.

Here’s what’s even crazier – he has negative dWAR (the worst stat in baseball by far). DRS does not take into account where a player is positioned. So if they are reading their teams scouting report and not in position to make a play – they are penalized. OAA does take into account player positioning.

Wilson is a weird player having a weird year. Clearly pitchers and coaches got the chance to plan for him over the off season. That OBP drop is no joke, and with very little power he has lost a lot of offensive value. And he lacks range at SS.

But he’s also a very clean defender, which is great, and in theory he’s a contact hitter who applies himself mentally. I am really curious to see what he does moving forwards. He seems to be in a position where he will always be battling both offensively and defensively to make the argument that he is valuable. Will he be able to figure some things out this off season and get his hit tool working again? When LDV is ready and comes up to play SS and he is moved to 2B or 3B will the fact that his range issues are less important but he is still a hoover with the ball make him a sudden ++ defender?

Or will be be Eric Sogard soon?

I don’t know.

At this point, don’t see many wanting to attend a game unless there is a giveaway or Yanks come to town. Disparity between us and our blue neighbor: they have 24 bobble head giveaways while we get a measly 5. Corporations don’t see value sponsoring Angel promotions. Would not be surprised see it reversed: Get a free Angels ticket when you purchase any combo meal at participating McDonald’s.

I’m thoroughly enjoying this season. It’s the best comedy show on TV that I hope gets recognized at the Emmy’s and Golden Globes.

We’ve officially hit rock bottom. There’s no reason to get upset, all you have to do is embrace the tank.

43 games left of the worst season in Angels history. Enjoy it 😇

We knew it was gonna be bad from the start. It is very bad. But imagine how much worse we’d feel if the FO had decided this just isn’t the right time to try and rebuild? Gotta hold on to Adell, he’s a fan favorite, etc.

Thank the ever patient baby Jesus we finally started to at least try to climb out of the hole.

The best thing about rock bottom is that there’s nowhere to go but up. We’ve finally started the long awaited rebuild — the farm is steadily improving, another top draft pick is incoming, our cap sheet is cleaner than fresh Brazilian’d asshole, Moz is hiring the next GM.

Zoom out a little a bit from our record, and this is the first time in a long time we can see a future. Not a bullshit one based off of my manufactured hopeium, rather an actual sustainable future. I’m excited for what the rest of the decade has in store for us

I just hope we stay committed to the rebuild, rather than going all in at the first sign of even a little bit of success. Otherwise we go straight back to purgatory again.
