Angels Stupidly Fire Pitching Coach Mike Maddux

Yes, you read that right, the Angels fired Mike Maddux, one of the best pitching coaches in MLB, for some inexcusable reason. No one knows why, fans already blaming Kurt Suzuki. Yes, Passan says results are not great, but this has been the best Angels rotation in a long time, filled mostly with iffy talent and rookies. You cannot expect miracles, especially after trading 5 pitchers at the trade deadline.

Watch as any smart team picks him up. It was a miracle he even signed with the Angels to begin with. Arte Moreno has to go, this is a devastating loss for the franchise and one that can delay a rebuilding team’s success by years. If it was that Kurt hated him, or that Arte was impatient or something else stupid, it is infuriating that Kurt wasn’t fired instead.

This team continues to be an absolute embarrassment to Baseball as a whole, not having even a winning season since 2015 and somehow getting worse almost every year. Really the only good reason why Maddux and the rest of the pitching staff was fired is if they all wanted to be. And that is the only damn hope we could have.

Why isn’t Suzuki being fired. And Brady Anderson. I can assure you Maddux was not the problem.

I don’t trust anything Moz says. He said Arredondo is a top 10 prospect in our system. He’s either incredibly stupid or just feels ok gaslighting all of us. There are reasons he was ousted from St. Louis. What the hell does Molly Jolly know about hiring a baseball person, she’s not a baseball person.

Who cares if he exaggerates about a prospect’s ranking? Your that tilted about a random prospect that you no longer trust him?

Relax and give him time. Nobody knows what Moz and Molly will bring, but whatever it may be, I’m sure it will be an improvement over the past years of Carpino – Perry.

I am very sorry that Maddux was fired. He is the least of the team’s problems.

Realistically, I would assume he is quite content to off-board this sinking ship.

I’m hoping we get him as player-manager for 2027 or 2028 or whenever it’ll be.

The Meck is the only batter in the lineup who is over .300. He should get to decide where he bats in the lineup.

I would love to see what batting “technology” states that Neto should lead off.

I am glad that it’s not Suzuki’s fault. You all owe him a huge apology. 😀

Who was the Cardinals GM when they were caught stealing the Astros computer files? Maddux came here and in months, not years made a notable difference in players performances. Angels traded 5 pitchers to contenders because they were good, when was the last time that happened. Changing a team around with 6 weeks to go is weak. Is having a new Pitching Coach prior to a lock out that important really, especially one who in 6 weeks doesn’t have to be resigned?

In a closed door meeting somethings were said and the one with the hammer reacted, does not mean wisely you understand, but he made the decision and the change was made. I do hope that he changes the whole system from not just the top, but from the bottom up too.

OK we all agree to there being Old School and New Tech Ways and it seems the new hitting coach Anderson is teaching the New Way, how’s that working out btw. Hey nobody here was asked how is the coaching working out or what do you think of how well our manager is doing-right. We are fans and we count only at the turnstile really, so really we can express our opinion here and differ as we want, let’s kept it civil though.

We all saw improvement in starting pitching and Bullpen pitching, it was the hitting that kept us in the hunt for number 1, so embrace the tank 😂 Where is that damn Col. Mustard.

Mozeliak was the GM but from all reports it was a single employee – who by the way – had a last name of Correa.

And Luhnow used the same password in Houston that he used i St Louis – per reports.

I’m not sure we have really seen that much, if any, improvement in SP this season vs. last. To me, the differences are pretty small over all. You can use Fangraphs to retrieve stat data on a teams pitching or breakdown into SP and RP and breakdown into seasons and so on.

if the png below can be read, the top row in each set is the current season and the bottom row of each set is the 2025 season. This data is only regarding SP. I don’t see a significant difference in the data between seasons, and yes the 2026 season is not complete, of course. One thing Angels SP does is induce ground balls, the best in the AL.

I think this is all overblown. I think Moz just wants a guy that has done well in the minors, and uses data possibly quite well, to try his stuff in Anaheim. I think that is all this is.

Worst record in baseball, Maddux is certainly not a scapegoat just the first guy sent packing.

Interim GM John Mozeliak: “I do feel like a lot of like the the pre-work going into a a game or a start, there were some some things that we discussed that we thought maybe could be utilized, and I don’t know if it was truly being taken advantage of.”

I think continually trying to make Mr. Zach (I lead the AL in strikeouts & terrible at bat%) Neto a leadoff hitter is a much more egregious decision than firing Maddux. Especially when Wade Meckler exists.

Honestly so many here are just emotional cattle. If Perry had executed this firing you’d be crying and whining and bitching. But bc it was Moz behind it, you are willing to buy in and defend or trivialize it. Such emotional lemmings jumping over the Moz cliff.

One has a track record with successes to point towards – one doesn’t. But agree, Perry would have been eviscerated.

It’s 2026 — all good MLB organizations are heavily analytically driven and have gone overboard in leveraging modern day technology to create any advantage.

Angels org provides the requisite tech to the team, pitchers want to use the tech, coaches don’t use the tech. Now Maddux and his assistants are gone.

Do you think the Dodgers, Brewers, Rays, Braves, Yankees, etc would employ coaches who refuse the tech resources? Of course not.

In that case he should be firing Brady Anderson next.. Our approach at the plate lacks a consistent plan that advanced analytics usually dictates.

Brady should never have been hired and has done nothing to help the team, unless he provides singles when they go to strip clubs.

Interim GM John Mozeliak said the pitching coaches were dismissed after talking with staff and players. They weren’t using the technology given to them the way the organization/players wanted.

That’s super interesting and smells of bs to me. Why wouldn’t Maddux use analytics. I thought he was brought in as an analytics guy.

Quick. everyone act like our team was top 5 in pitching staff WHIP and ERA and we fired our pitching coach staff.

If Moz says the pitching staff wasn’t using technology to their advantage, then it’s a justified firing unfortunately.

No ill will towards Maddox, wish him well.

You all said “tear it down, burn it to the ground, get rid of everyone!” That includes the entire coaching staff too.
Maybe we can get a future Hall of Famer, a former Angel, the best player in the league for about 10 years, a guy who played in this modern era and has relationships with many players and coaches to take the reins. He can wear #5.

No. See, we were gonna fire Suzuki but the next manager, who will be a red assed speaker of truth to power and a mans mans man, will keep the old pitching coach around. I think that the Angels Man Baby’s fantasy.

And here I was advocating for the last few weeks for Dana, Klassen, Aldegheri, etc. to gain experience under Mike’s tutelage. Of all the disaster coaching and managing cohorts this team had this year, I didn’t think Maddux would be the one who will go first.
