LA Angels Monday News Crash

The Angels are still looking to trade people. They apparently sought Franklin
Arias for Neto..

Here is an overall trade tracker.

Harrison Bader was drunk driving a scooter when he ran into the back of a fire truck. The fire truck then ran over his foot. That’s the end of his season. The Giants suspended his pay while they look into the matter.

The Giants traded Tyler Mahle to the Braves.

The Dodgers acquired Tarik Skubal from the Tigers in exchange for three good prospects.

The Rays are designating Craig Kimbrel for assignment. They acquired Freddy Peralta from the Mets in exchange for three prospects.

J.P. France just got a minor league deal with the Padres.

Kenley Jansen got mad that somebody bunted for a base hit and said something that cleared the benches at a Tigers-Athletics game. Speaking of the Tigers, they just released left-hander Sean Guenther.

The Mets claimed catcher Shawn Ross from the Pirates.

4 hours to go. I wonder what Detmers and Neto are doing? Are they hoping the phone rings?

Neto is probably putting on his eye black as we speak while Reid is still shaking his head from being pulled after 5 innings from his last start.

Does this mean the “Jo Adell Football Jersey” and “Bobblehead” promotions are cancelled?

The team should honor Jo’s legacy and reward the fans with the bobblehead. It’s too sick not to

Only one top 50 prospect has been traded thus far: Nimmala to the Angels. Two top 100 guys: Nimmala and Hope.

Top 100 guys just don’t get traded with great frequency at the deadline.

Nimmala is the 3rd or 4th best project traded so far?? I know a couple from the Dodgers are high on the list- who else?

In the past following other teams, some will announce BEFORE the trade deadline that X, Y, & Z Top Prospects are off limits. It appears that several teams had a list of NON-tradeable.

Just a reference.

Baseball Prospect (MLB Pipeline I think) doesn’t have him in the top 100 nor in the top 10 in shortstops. While I think it was a solid trade, we must remember these “experts” are rating 10-20 year old kids. Just like we do. We are only expressing an opinion and at this time, no one knows which trades will turn out GREAT or HOW DUMB WAS MOZ.

Regarding the Doyers,

Branch Rickey is spinning in his grave. He basically invented the farm system because John McGraw and the Giants could just buy everyone good.

Jo was the handsomest son of a bitch we’ve had since forever. Best beard in the Majors. Breathtaking in home whites. But yeah… never quite the impact bat we hoped. That three-homer-robbery game this season is an all-time org highlight.

I think they are trying to find the biggest player on the block that won’t cost them Arias. There are reports that they inquired about Elly and Otto Lopez, and similarly, the Reds, Marlins, and Angels all want the same guy.

With the way Moz just jack-hammered this team today, I hope that’s a good sign that Molly convinced him to stay for the longer haul.

I’m thinking just Detmers left. It does seem like a buyers market now on the final day with sellers trying to get their pieces out before the buyers dry up.

Wouldn’t settle on Neto. I think I would keep Zef too. If his strong 2nd half carries over into the next year and the Angels slap a few more saves on him, that asset will only go up.

I think Cozart for Adell is a great deal!

One of the 2nd round picks we wish we’d made the last couple years….

Scouting grades: Hit: 40 | Power: 45 | Run: 30 | Arm: 50 | Field: 55 | Overall: 40

A big-time college performer who started three years at NC State and helped lead the Wolfpack to a Men’s College World Series, Cozart went in the second round of the 2024 Draft and signed with the Guardians a hair over slot for $2,050,000. After his first taste of pro ball was a disappointment offensively following a long college campaign, he bounced back in his first full season with a .235/.341/.371 slash line between High-A and Double-A.
Despite being large for a catcher at 6-foot-3, 214 pounds, Cozart stands out most for his defense. Not only is he a strong framer and receiver, but he receives rave reviews for soft skills such as his communication with pitchers, game planning and leadership — perhaps unsurprising since he comes from a baseball family. He has a strong throwing arm, although he only caught 23.9 percent of attempted runners last year because his throws were sometimes off the mark. Cozart may be no threat to steal bases, but he’s plenty nimble behind the plate.

His offense trended in the right direction last season, although swing-and-miss is holding him back. Cozart’s longer, steep swing can make it difficult to cover the zone, and his strikeout and walk numbers regressed against more advanced pitching; his overall improved production from High-A (106 wRC+) to Double-A (113 wRC+) can largely be attributed to BABIP luck. He has solid raw strength, but his lack of bat speed caps his in-game power.

seems to be a significantly better hitter against RHP so maybe in the future him and Flores can be a good platoon.

Yeah. He just gets added to the pile of possibly good young catchers we have. We will try to get two useful guys out of the group. Cozart may be able to learn so 1B too. He is a TALL catcher.

I like Jo -he was fun to watch. You never knew whether he would hit multiple HRs, multiple Ks, make a great defensive play or “Canseco” a play.

As his salary increases, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.
I wish him well with the change of scenery

Admittedly I was expecting a mid-tier reliever for Jo, considering his offense is sapped this season. So to actually get back a relatively high ceiling positional player, and a catcher at that(!) is a bonus

I agree. MLBTR summary:

“Adell never lived up to his top prospect billing but is a useful role player with dwindling club control. They could’ve kept him and given him a raise to the $8MM range next year, but they’ll instead cash in on that extra season of club control by acquiring a mid-level prospect from a good Cleveland system.”

Baseball America:
BA Grade/Risk: 45/Average

Adjusted Grade: 35

Track Record: Cozart was one of the top catchers in the 2024 draft class coming out of NC State, and signed with the Guardians for $2.05 million as a second-rounder. His 13-game pro debut in 2024 is illustrative of not overreacting to small debut samples, as Cozart looked much more like himself in a complete 2025 season where he hit .235/.341/.371 with 15 homers at High-A and Double-A.

Scouting Report: Cozart is a physical, lefthanded hitting catcher with a 6-foot-3, 214-pound frame and a tremendous work ethic and mindset behind the plate. He was viewed as a strong defender coming out of the draft, and has only improved in this area of his game in 2025, with glowing reviews across the board. Cozart is dedicated to his craft and is a strong receiver in any location, with advanced blocking skills to go with plus arm strength. He threw out 24% of baserunners across both levels in 2025, but also excels at all the soft skills that separate good catchers from great ones, like game prep and pitcher management. Cozart had a slow start offensively, but flipped a switch in June and managed an OPS of .800 or better from then on. His steep swing and swing-and-miss tendencies might cap his offensive upside, but he does have plus raw power—that will play more fringy in games—and strong on-base skills.

The Future: Cozart’s defensive ability and OBP gives him second-division value at the least, and there’s more ceiling if he can find a way to access his power more frequently.

Scouting Grades Hit: 35 | Power: 45 | Run: 30 | Field: 65 | Arm: 60

He sounds like an older, larger version of Flores… three years older but roughly same stage of development. But lefthanded. Maybe our platoon of the future?

Jacob Cozart was a 2nd round pick I. 2024 out of NC State. Guardians gave up $2M in that draft

Very good defender with a good arm behind the plate. Power over hit, with a bit of a swing and miss issue. Has a chance to be an everyday backstop
