Angels Trade Jose Soriano to Blue Jays, Brent Suter to Braves, Jo Adell to Guardians

As anyone who was awake earlier would know, the Angels actually did it, they traded someone. Jose Soriano is going to Toronto for prospects Arjun Nimmala (SS), Eddie Micheeletti (OF) and Angel Rivero (RHP).

That is a 20 year old SS, a 24 year old OF, and a 19 year old pitcher. I am sure that more detail would be given down in the comments on how good this is or not.

Also, a bit more recently, the Angels traded Brent Suter for an IF named Nacho Alvarez jr. Helmet Nachos with his name on it if he is any good.

Then, at 9:20 AM, the Angels traded Jo Adell to Cleveland. Guards are actually buying, and Ho Adell, the 3 home run robber himself, is gone. Jacob Cozart (C) is part of what the Angels get back.

This will be updated with future trades (if they happen) for the next few hours.

Padres trading for Robbie Ray.
deGrom invoked his no-trade clause to block a trade.

Hey Milwaukee, Atlanta, Chicago, Philly it’s time to up your offer for Detmers.

The Pandas badly need them. They have little offense beyond the top three in the lineup, and they just snuck into first place due to weak divisional competition, much like the AL West.

Probably not? I think it’s uncommon to see a same season jump from DSL to A ball

I think Rex is talking Arizona. We saw TGA, Jordan, Soto and Alvarez all make the jump last year.

Slawinski is nursing a tweaked oblique though – I imagine they shut him down from here on out.

I went and rechecked Baseball Reference (again MLB Pipeline I think) and now in the Top 100 is #42 Bremner and #43 Nimmmala.

For Angels Top 30 – #1 Bremner. Now #2 Nimmala, # 18 Cozart,

Hayden Alvarez is a top 100 prospect too. Slawinski and Jordan probably on the peripheral

I think Klassen, Slawinski, Jordan and Grindlinger should all be in the 100-150 tier personally. Nimmala, Bremner, Alvarez top 100.

Getting there. High A is still scary barren in terms of position players, but maybe some of the recent college draftees will begin to address that. Still need a couple more drafts like last year’s, and then I could see a #10-15 tier farm emerging.

I’m glad i saved my few HH articles before they blew it up. I had one on Jo Adell’s debut game in Tempe 7-6-17. Luckily Soriano pitched too. It’s ironic they both were traded the same day. (I’ve had so many insanely weird coincidences since Thursday I won’t go into depth here, this is just another one so I’m not surprised.) Here’s a snippet:

Jo Adell on first base after his first hit. If you ever see him hit a triple (and you will), you will tell your grand kids about the way he runs.

On the defensive side of the game, the big highlight was pitcher Jose Soriano. He’s 18 and listed as 6’3”, 168 lb. I heard one of the coaches call him ‘Flamingo’. He dominated the A’ss, with 4 innings and just giving up 1 run and three hits. This kid now has a 1.13 ERA and 0.75 WHIP in 8 innings. He has a future. Jessica DeLine will be calling him a ‘Stud’ every week for the next three years in her Cow Tipping column.

Time will tell with the trades. Doing the same thing wasn’t working nor was it likely to in the near future. Burn it down, invest in development facilities, technology and people.

There’s almost no such thing as a can’t miss prospect as MLB players are like the velociraptors in Jurrasic Park. They are always testing you for weaknesses and if it’s there, they will exploit it. The guys who succeed are the ones that can make the adjustments and that is a difficult skill to read in advance.

Neto is the big must trade for me. He’s probably not going to me more valuable later and he’s too selfish of a player to be instrumental in helping to change the clubhouse culture.

IF Arias is truly on the table it will take more than simply Neto. I could see a package deal going to Boston in exchange for Arias and others.

Would really suck to see Reid as a Sox. He’s truly a great guy. But he is such a great guy even I would root for him to do well there.

I still want to see Reid traded to the Cubs. I like their system and we’d do good by Reid letting him go back home.

Rays should make a move for Neto.

I love the idea of getting Ayers from the Cubs for Detmers.

I think at this point there are two scenarios at play:

Neto plus more to Boston

Flipping Detmers and Neto individually.

Probably depends on how badly they want to target Arias.

So, 10 AM here on the Best Coast and:

The Angels have already acquired the top prospect in their system.
The Angels have added a solid catcher to pair with Juan Flores in AA

Pretty safe organizational outfielder
Interesting lottery ticket in the 19 year old pitcher

And taxi squad infielder on the model of Grissom and Peraza, but arguably better hit tool than both.

Mentioned it in the other thread, but these are all very rational exchanges – none super exciting or transformational – but none stupid. Value for value, for the most part.

More attention to bat-to-ball skills and defense than Perry. Seems clear that Brewers and Rays are more the organizational model, which is positive.

These aren’t the prospect profiles I pine for, necessarily, but it’s a respectable approach.

Thus far, the Angels are the only team to have nabbed a top 50 prospect, and that doesn’t happen often at the deadline.

Hope was in the 50s on the BA and FG lists, which I turn to most often, though MLB Pipeline was much hotter on him. Variable opinions. I think you could argue that Nimmala and Hope are in comparable tiers.

the only other big shake-up like this i can remember is over 4 weeks at the end of the 1999 season – when Collins (Mgr) and Bavasi (GM) were bounced.

In came Scioscia and Stoneman. IIRC, that turned out OK.

Think of it as the same as when Peter Bourjos had to hand out his bobblehead at the gate, instead of actually playing the game. Except this time, Adell won’t be handing them out.

jefftulsa, back in the day, The Angels had a center fielder named Peter Bourjos, or Fleet Pete as he was known around here . Fast, very fast. Not a favorite of Mike Scioscia (or so it was rumored). It a power bat, but fast on the bases. There was a Bourjos bobblehead night at the stadium, Scioscia, or the powers that be, decided to not put Bourjos in the line up, on his own bobblehead night, and have him stand out by the main entrance, handing out his own bobblehead. Never did that before, nor have they done it after.

Team’s biggest weakness is pitching so it only makes sense to trade away your best starting pitcher, who was still under team control for the next 2 years.

JakeTaylor

Point is, he was the ace of our staff and still under team control for the next 2 years. I don’t like the trade to be honest but at least we’re making moves.

Not only was it not a good trade, it was a terrible trade. Your initial instinct was correct Jake. Especially the part about two years of team control; this smells like the kind of trade you make in a walk year when you know you are about to get nothing for a guy…

Trading is only helpful when you make intelligent trades, not just throwing darts blindfolded…

The team’s biggest weakness is a lack of talent across the board. That was not going to change over the next two seasons.

Time will tell if Mozeliak has added talent that will help down the line but a top 40ish prospect in all of the game to go along with a high OBP outfielder and young arm with upside.

Walbert Urena has been our best pitcher for the last 3 months. Sori has regressed since the first month. I wouldn’t have hated keeping him but the return was very solid. As always time will tell but this org needed a hard reset.
