LA Angels Tuesday News Crash

At least now the rumors are beginning to involve Angels players. Supposedly, the Angels will make both Soriano and Detmers available.  “[I]f Mozeliak can convince owner Arte Moreno that selling is the right move, these two arms would be highly coveted and should bring back solid returns.” And another one.

Could Jo Adell be reunited with Brandon Marsh?

Here is the FAQ about the Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

The Cubs designated Drew Pomeranz for assignment. The Dodgers just released 21 year old pitcher Jose Cabrera after one crappy season at single A. The Dodgers just acquired Right-hander Seth Halvorsen from Colorado in exchange for minor leaguers Nick Frasso and Landyn Vidourek. The Royals signed Aaron Bummer to a minor league deal.

The Astros reinstated Ronel Blanco and Bennett Sousa from the 60 day IL. The Mets reinstated Luis Robert Jr. from their 60 day IL. Adley Rutschman is on the injured list with wrist inflammation.

Jack Salmon, Tim’s nephew who was drafted in the 18th round, is respectfully not doing interviews right now.

I share close friends with the family and reached out through them. Jack doesn’t want extra attention due to his name. Just wants to get to camp and play.

A rare swap on Baseball Trade Values that earned approval from both fanbases. I think this is probably the best the Angels could do for Reid, and it’d make a huge impact on the positional pipeline in the upper minors.

I love it so much, it can only be fantasy, no?

LHP Root could be Detmers on the club in two years, you know you’re going to get a regular from one of Hope or Tibbs, and the latter is probably playable now, and Harlan is a fun lottery ticket the Angels don’t have much of in their system.

This trade makes too much sense. The Dodgers even “win” it on BTV value, and they retain their two top prospect bats in De Paula and Sirota. It’s glancing pain they can easily absorb, given the depth of their system.

There will be no proper youth movement until the ArteChrist sells. Acceptance is such a good step to be in right now. I feel at peace.

JJ has suggested that there may be a new sheriff in town and that MO actually has some control over player-personnel decisions.

I think there will be a significant test of that hypothesis at the upcoming trade deadline. There is no reason that any GM with a desire to improve the Club long-term would keep the tradable pieces as long as there are decent prospects on the table. This team is not going to “compete” as built and needs to be broken down and rebuilt. If this does not happen at the trade deadline, I think the most likely explanation would be Arte not allowing Mo to make the trades. This would be just a continuation of the “compete” narrative that we have heard for the last decade-plus.

If Mo is allowed to make the trades and focus on rebuilding the minor league system, then I may start believing that there is change in the air.

This is the trial period.

Either Arte lets Mo put his stamp on the organization or Mo walks. We’ll know at the end of the year.

One caveat to that is Mo did talk a bit in his mid-game interview about the value of our tradeable players. He mentioned that all of the legitimate trade pieces have multiple years of control left which can complicate the valuation of what they are worth. Also mentioned that these types of players typically get traded in the off-season whereas the deadline is mostly rental players.

I took that to mean that he recognizes we should be getting extra value back in return. If teams aren’t offering enough, he may not be willing to trade.

True. But since none of the players we would be trading have contracts after this year, they are by definition, all rentals.

Mo is also a GM who needs to play the game and make sure he publicly states the right things. He wants to get good value for his players. Best way is to act like he might not trade them.

I was glad to hear what Mozeliak expressed in his interview with national media yesterday ; when asked about trading key assets he stated that he didn’t feel a full rebuild was necessary and added that “the real answer is what are we getting in returns (.)” I was happy to hear that he has a balanced and intelligent approach instead of like so many here who are frothing at the mouth to “trade everyone” or “sell it all.”

He is going to take a rational approach, not concerned with throwing fresh meat to the fanbase but rather making only those moves where we either clearly win or at minimum get equal value back, not just high end proven player for 2-3 midling, unproven prospects….

Which is frankly what he should say, and what he should expect. The other side should hurt a little in these trades, as there’s an urgency to win.

There’s some logic to waiting until the offseason to trade Soriano and Detmers if the packages aren’t right, as all of the 2026 draftees will be then tradeable after the WS is over.

There was a lot I liked in St Louis’s draft class, for example – more than what I currently like in their system. I bet Mo could trade well with his old franchise, and guys like Trevor Condon, Tegan Kuhns, Dee Kennedy, Randall, Williamson would look good in the Angels’ system.

If he does nothing, I hope it’s with an intention to stay through winter, and wait for the right player exchange packages to emerge.

I agree that doing nothing isn’t really an option, but timing is everything. And perhaps he can convince Moreno that he’s willing to keep 1-2 of his toys around, as long as Moreno invests in free agency next year. (Unlikely given the lockout, but we’ll see.)

Arte signing anyone in the offseason does seem unlikely. Will be an interesting offseason. Last time there was a lockout Arte sent lots of people packing. If there are rumblings about that happening again, I can’t see Mozeliak staying at all. Not sure about Molly. She worked hard to get a consultant who is well respected. If Arte reverts to his past I wonder if Molly sticks around. What would be the point?

With even Rhett “House Scribe” Bollinger framing his game coverage in trade-value terms, I guess it’s a fait accompli. I’ll miss Soriano the most. It was a long, turbulent, exciting road with him, from obscure prospect arm to Rule 5 write-off to TJ reclamation project to rotation stud. I’ll miss his ridiculous knuckle-curve (one of the game’s great wipeout pitches, when it’s on) and composed, cool-ass mound demeanor. Wish it could have ended differently. Wish there were more points of light over the last 10 years of Angels fandom, less disappointment and regret.

Woah 💣👀👀

6. Zach Neto, SS, Los Angeles Angels

Chance of being traded: 30%
Rest-of-season impact: High
Years of control: Three more years after 2026

The buzz: The Angels are at the very least listening, which is more than they’ve done at past deadlines, and 25-year-old Neto is an awfully intriguing option when Jeremy Pena’s and CJ Abrams’ availability at shortstop is in question.

The biggest curiosity in the industry right now is just how much Angels owner Arte Moreno will allow interim general manager John Mozeliak to maneuver — and if the full rebuild the team needs can start to happen under a temporary employee. Mozeliak is a veteran of trade deadline navigation and the winner of a World Series in St. Louis, so he’s capable of executing any deal. And the return on Neto would be enormous. Four-win shortstops are not easy to come by, and Neto has consistently proved himself just that — with room to grow.

The scouting report: Neto has been quietly very productive, the shortstop hitting ninth best in the league over the past three seasons (15% above average at the plate), while ranking fifth in homers (68) and stealing 69 bases.

He’s a solid runner with a good arm but comes up a bit short in defensive metrics for his range, especially going up the middle (minus-16 runs in that area over the past three seasons).

Neto’s spot on the power/contact spectrum and his range up the middle are the only two questions for teams to think about when acquiring him for his three-plus remaining control years.

Best fits: Boston, Atlanta, Toronto, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, New York Yankees

Not Turks – but it really depends based on BTV. For Neto for instance, Red Sox could give us Ayanson and Azocar – and still need to throw in a sweetener. But if we wanted Arias – we’d need to throw in a sweetener. On paper that is. The number 100 prospect – Murf Gray is only 9.3 BTV and number one is Made with 76.8. We currently have Neto at 61.4, Detmers at 59.3 and Soriano at 41.

They should get 5-6 for the lot, if they’re maximizing value.

Each of those guys should bring back 1-2 top 100 guys and some extras, with Soriano perhaps having the weakest case. But SP is scarce in this market, so values should be high.

Quantity v quality though – there are hypothetical 1:1 swaps that would just be about extending the Angels timeline (say, Detmers or Soriano for Anderson or Hernandez, or Neto for Franklin Arias, straight up) that are fun to contemplate.

Top 100 ? That’s all ?? I mean, I would be extremely disappointed if we traded Soriano and only got two guys ranked 50-100 and no proven player who is an MLB regular…. I think with Soriano, Detmers and Neto you have to at least get one plug-in regular as a starter unless you are getting a guy picked in the First Round (a First Round talent) coming back…. At least that is how I would look at it….

Look at the last 20 years of trading – how many trades brought back 3+ Top 100 guys in a single exchange? Precious few. It takes Skenes or Ohtani level talent to expect 3-4 top 100 guys for one guy. All of the Angels trade chips fall into the “very good” bucket, not the “great” or “exceptional” bucket.

Getting, say, three players back for each guy, with 1-2 of those top 100 prospects, is a rational expectation. If one of those three players is MLB-ready, all the better.

Atlanta has resurrected Victor Medieros another Perry folly. Arte’s ownership travesties overshadowed how bad Perry was at roster management. The rare case of the boss being so bad that it overshadowed how worse middle management is.

Was Perry really that bad or is this Org simply awful at developing and improving players. It’s an open question. If your Org is awful, it really doesn’t matter whom you draft. All prospects come with warts and need developing and refining. If the Org does not do that, no GM will be successful.

GonFishin

That’s still not a good excuse. As the GM, Perry was also in charge of what minor league affiliation they played in, when a player could be called up, sent down, or released. And judging from his post game comments, it sounds like he wasn’t happy with the information being passed to him about how often to throw his fastball. That is 100% on the general manager.

Well – yes, and no. Picture you are the GM. You see systemic problems that require substantial infrastructure and personnel investment. You go to Arte and say this is what you suggest. Arte says he’s not spending that money. What’s the GM to do?

I don’t know if that was a consistent reality but it certainly could be with what we know. Under that hypothetical, what could Perry do other than quit?

I think you can split the difference.

Lack of investment in scouting and development sits squarely with Arte. And I it’s one of the biggest defects of the Angels organization as a whole.

Perry is responsible for not recognizing talent/potential and subjecting Medieros to waivers in favor of keeping losers like Shaun Anderson and others on the 40-man.

Medieros not developing is more of an Arte problem. Medieros being on the Atlanta roster is a Perry problem.

I think this one in particular falls on Perry. Mederos showed promise in AAA last year. People he was keeping on the roster, like Shaun Anderson have never shown any inkling of long term pitching ability. Plus he had Yates, Suter and others on the roster who will have no chance of being good when the Angels might be competitive again.

But here’s what is wild – he may get a boost in execution if his draft picks pan out and he’s still going to go down as severely failed. I do think the fish rots from the head – and a change in leadership that manifests through the organization could pay huge dividends. I do believe we’ve been terrible at development and pretty darn bad in the US draft. They did okay on the international market – but our development has not gotten it done.

And LATAM revival was happening before him – he just kept and reinforced momentum. Their Dominican facilities are still below-average, and they only have one DSL team, where many teams have two.

The LATAM pipeline is seeing success – I just don’t want to ballast the perception that Minasian started the revival – he was a beneficiary of it more than a catalyst, imo.

Disagree. As a high school teacher and coach my principal has very little impact on my desire or ability to make myself better and compete with those around me. He’s not in my class affecting my lesson nor teaching my athletes on the court. Arte is not teaching a pitcher how to throw strikes or threaten players with accountability when they’re not doing day to day work. As I read it here, for some of you , Arte is both utterly incompetent that he knows nothing and such a savant that he knows everyone’s spin rates and barrel percentage. Pick a lane.

Perry was an absolute stinker when it came to organizing the MILB pipeline rushing players or mis managing the roster and guys were promoted too early or to the wrong place or coach.

Massive respect for teachers. All three of my sisters are teachers. One is actually a teaching coach now and is basically a boss of another.

A bad principle won’t change your desire to be good at your job. I’m sure all of the Angels minor leaguers want to be good at their jobs.

But if a bad principle hired a bunch of crappy teachers, cut back on the budgets for supplies and support, and demanded duct tape fixes to an obviously flawed infrastructure I’m sure that school would fail.

I specifically chose to pull numbers after he returned from injury, but if I zoomed out a bit further to 5/17 it would look even more impressive. Nolan has special bat-to-ball skills and is by far and away the best hitter on this team, it isn’t even up for debate anymore.

Not just about gambling with Rose…. like Bonds he was an a-hole towards media etc.. For his part Bonds was also an a-hole towards Clubhouse attendants and the like… You reap what you sow as the saying goes…

If Bonds were only an a-hole, as he clearly was, that would not disqualify him. Using enough drugs to turn himself into a comic book character is the sole reason. I still can’t believe they let his tainted “records” stand.

Why ? They are parading him at the HR Derby and All Star Game because he’s the All Time HR Leader ! I think that should be pretty obvious.

My biggest gripe is Bud Selig got in – basically encouraging – the steroids era – under his watch. You don’t get in that position by being stupid. They all knew – and they turned a blind eye because HR’s were putting butts in seats and in front of the TV.

Angels hitting instructor Brady Anderson showed how clean lifting could get you stronger. No need for roids. 😂

Yes, I agree on Selig …. there was alot of hypocrisy…. testing but only enforcing selectively…

Since that was his skill, why doesn’t he have our guys following his lead. Seriously, I have no idea why he was hired, and we should find someone better along with a new manager ASAP.

Cobb did not use steroids or gamble on games. If he did, he does not belong in.

To me this is the asinine part:

The least valuable roider is in (Papi) while the far more valuable roiders of Bonds and Clemes are out.

Yep, Major League Baseball treats the Red Sox the same way FIFA treats Argentina. They have a different set of rules. This includes allowing umpires and refs to cheat on their behalf !

Interestingly, each team has a pompous, abrasive and obnoxious fanbase and a racist culture in their city/country. I don’t know what this means but I find it interesting…

I just found out how racist their general culture seems to be. It’s crazy in this day and age.
