LA Angels Tuesday News Crash

Taijuan Walker opted out of his Angels contract. Oh well. Here comes Denzer Guzman. Good luck Denzer!

One trade chip for every team. It’s no big surprise who Rhett Bollinger picked for the Angels. With an elite groundball rate, Soriano just needs a decent defense behind him.

The Rays selected the contract of Austin Slater in preparation to face a series of left-handed pitchers. The Diamondbacks signed Max Kepler to a one year deal. The Rangers just released utility man Sam Haggerty.

Hamstring issues are going around. Jameson Taillon had to leave a game in the second inning with a strain. Nick Allen made it to the third inning.

The Pirates bullpen has Angel-ed tonight. Skenes left after 6 with a 2-2 score. The bullpen then came in in the 7th and gave up 10 runs in that inning.

This should be a day off for Trouty, again Kurt is just not understanding of an 0 fer 20+ ABs. Now with that out there, watch Trouty go 5-5 with 2 HRs and a 3b, 2b and a single with 12 rbi. 😂

Not sure this one made it into yesterday’s News Crash:

1. Zoook never managed before

from last Fall from the start

was that it was a terrible hire.

2. After going to the back fields almost daily during February the last 5-10 years, I didn’t make a single visit in 2026.

I have no idea if Suzuki is stupid. It’s like putting F1 drivers in races with a Yugo with this team. You may have a great driver…. standing next to the smoking mess of a car on the side of the track.

The only thing Suzuki fails at is saying things that no manager would say so that various fans Man Feels get tickled just right. Kurt, like any manager, is just gonna garble some weak ass line of fluff talk in answer to any tough question because he’s not supposed to actually answer.

Otherwise, if he can keep everyone on this roster from swallowing their own tongue and choking to death he’s done his job.

Silent C going under the knife for TJS.

Allowing him to pitch thru elbow pain is another example of malpractice by this organization.

In a similar vein, why is Schanuel playing thru a calf/ankle injury? Pushing through this type of injury has been the cause of many recent Achilles tears in athletes (Tatum, Haliburton, Daniel Jones).

When you think we can’t sink lower we do.

G-d speed Silent C 🫡🙏🏼

He pitched thru elbow pain for 3 starts. As I read that last quote, how does nobody on the staff do anything when one of their pitchers is physically compromised throwing bullpens?

Kochanowicz said he’s been dealing with the elbow issue for his last three starts, and it flared up while throwing his changeup on Saturday. He underwent an X-ray exam on Saturday that came back negative; he will undergo an MRI exam on Monday.

“I felt it on some changeups the last few weeks and yesterday on some changeups, it specifically was bothering me,” Kochanowicz said. “The last three [starts] definitely. It’s been limiting my throwing midweek, my bullpens midweek a little bit, but I’ve been trying to push through, trying to stay positive. But just the changeups yesterday, it was a little more painful.”

Yes and no. I posted a quote and the story in this thread — are we supposed to believe nobody on the staff could see their starting pitcher physically struggle while throwing bullpens?

This team let O’Hoppe rush back from a broken hand and Schanuel rush back from a calf strain. I don’t believe they just didn’t know Silent C was dealing with an issue.

Player health is clearly not being taken as seriously as it should be. It’s becoming a trend this season.

we are currently 29th overall, with Colorado a half game worse but the good news is that the bottom two have equal chances at the top pick in the 2027 draft, according to Tankathon. Both teams will have a 19.88% chance in the drawing. So we don’t really have to worry about being worse than the Rockies. At this point we need to be worse than the Royals and the Tigers.

And my first “sim lottery” sees us drop to #6. Ha!

The bottom 3 teams all have the same odds – 16.5%.

The Giants are the third worst team but are not eligible to pick in the top 10 so I think somehow that skews the numbers in our favor. If the Royals or Tigers dropped into the bottom three then I think you would see those teams all at 16.5%.

So we need to be worse than the Royals and the Tigers AND the Giants need to be better than them.

Tankathon needs to fix their odds, then. In any case, we don’t need to root for losses. We can still finish ahead of *some* team! And still have as much of a shot at the top pick.

Nobody asked me but: The team seems to be pulling rabbits out of a hat with how well the bottom of the lineup is hitting, they are making games somewhat fun to tune into… I hope Trout retires this coming Winter… I don’t think Schanuel is going to be a star, another wasted first round pick… Jeff should not write more than one out of ten “knock the Angels” pieces, we are aware of the fact the team is a rotten from the inside out shit-show, “Keep the line moving nothing to add here” (IMHO)… In recent years we’ve seen Trout, Fletcher, Walsh and now O’Hoppe fall off the cliff with what once appeared to be promising careers end way to early. I will for always wonder just how great Trouty would have been without injuries… Consistent, that’s the word for PTP. Rarely does he understand what it means to field a defensive team… Kurt Suzuki is clueless in trying so hard to get Yates to 100 career saves or maybe I am the one who is clueless in not adopting the idea of “Tanking”… The Meck reminds me of Wade Boggs at the plate until he reverts to his norm anyway… Would you agree that it’s time to see what Bachman can bring as the closer…My biggest surprise of the season so far has been all the no-names producing currently for us and my biggest disappointment would be the amount of Base on Balls or walks our pitchers have given up…Thanx for reading this.

Jeff – I am looking at your relatively recent SI articles and don’t see any recent ones that are addressing criticisms of the Org. If you have decided to take focus on more positive stories – that is certainly your choice and will definitely provide you with access unlike say Sam the Hat. But as a responsible journalist I cannot imagine basically ignoring the glaring and daily failures of this Org. Again, I respect any decision you’ve made as to tone and focus. But I cannot help but be a little disappointed if I’m honest.

There was an article about Tarps Off just 10 days ago…

https://www.si.com/mlb/angels/onsi/la-angels-fan-protests-tarps-off-movement-plans-massive-escalation-at-angel-stadium-01ksx69sbsjj

This article from a week ago has a lot of negative things to say about how the team is run:

https://www.si.com/mlb/angels/onsi/will-a-salary-cap-save-or-ruin-the-angels-01kt2gvpamc7

Not sure Jeff can write scathing articles every few days and still be a fair journalist. There are still positive things to cover with the team and not everyone wants to read a constant stream of doom and gloom.

I am considering Jeff’s bandwidth due to this being a side gig for him. I agree that you could probably dig and find all kinds of negative things to write without running out of content.

What I don’t think would be fair journalism is to decide to write a third ‘Arte Sucks’ article for the week in lieu of writing about the youth camp that Detmers and Meckler participated in.

Despite how bad the ownership and front office sucks, there are still player pieces deserving attention.

Jeff has a career, a family, runs this site, and is a contracted journalist for SI.

He’s in his 1st year covering the Angels in this capacity. Anyone who understands journalism would know the type of nuance it takes to make connections, establish sources, and write objective stories. Right or wrong, you aren’t going to get very far with the organization you cover by disparaging them in every article.

Pineapple12

It’s not his job to appease your desire for nonstop anti-Arte hit pieces.

It’s rare to get this type of access and as a responsible journalist it’s his job to make connections and build relationships within the org. Not everyone can be Sam Blum and incinerate the org with every word typed.

Jeff often asks CtPG for feedback. He’ll even make fun of himself for turning Friday Links into Jeff’s links to Jeff’s SI.

I’m a big fan of asking questions. Not because I believe something different than most here, but because asking those questions should and can draw out more elaborate answers than “I like ice cream” “yeah, ice cream is good” when the reality is most of the shit in the frozen food section of a supermarket isn’t even ice cream it’s frozen dessert these days. Anyway, I was curious how those kids were chosen to go to Play Ball Weekend and that wasn’t covered in the article. That feedback might be helpful for future articles.

How I read ‘71s comment: I like more Sam Blum type coverage and look forward to more.

Pineapple12

“But as a responsible journalist I cannot imagine basically ignoring the glaring and daily failures of this Org”

I don’t see any constructive feedback here. It is a snotty statement and a veiled slight (I’m sure unintentional, but still) because the content isn’t negative enough. TB already pointed out there’s been several negative articles published recently too.

I am not looking for negativity. I want to be 100% clear about that.

What I am looking for is completely honest journalism about this Org. To me that would include at least 1 critical article about the Org for every 1 puff piece about an upcoming player. This Org and its owner is simply awful – probably the worst in baseball. And covering it honestly requires brutal honesty.

It is my impression that since Jeff was given access to Molly Jolly and was entertained to some extent by the Org with nice seats and a food tour his independence and criticisms have been affected. That is my honest impression. I am not being negative – I am being honest.

Angels employees not getting tips and protesting

https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/1d51ss9/angel_stadium_concession_workers_protest_legends/

Swept under the rug and no reports of how that was resolved (if at all)

Rodents in the stadium and Brian Sanders (of no MiLB or MLB experience) being the angels steward for such things. How is that a safe, healthy environment?!?

https://ktla.com/news/orange-county/rodent-infestation-at-angel-stadium-leads-to-concession-stand-closure/amp/

Not looking for negativity but looking for a criticism for every non-criticism. So only negativity 50% of the time.

I started counting all the articles from most recent to Jan 2 when Jeff started this. I stopped counting at 200 and I don’t think I got through March. There are a lot of articles published the same day.

I propose a challenge to any one in CTPG who wants to take it on. Let’s say we publish one critical article for every non-critical article. Don’t have to write the article completely, a headline and 5 or 6 bullet points will do. Do this for 60 days and at least one article every day. (There have been 158 days since Jan 2 and I stopped articles at 200.)

Besides publishing an article a day, the real challenge is to not repeat yourself ad nauseam. If you write the same article 3 times a week your readership will drop. No one pays someone to write the same thing time and time again, particularly when that writing is so obvious.

I have enjoyed your posts when you have been positive about this team and now I agree when your feelings are the opposite. But today it comes across, to me at least., that you are lashing out at someone trying to do something they like and make a little more income and at the end of the day, can’t change your feelings about this awful org.
Best regards,

Why are you bringing all this reasonability to CtPG bro?!

Truth be told, all the articles written on the Angels are just regurgitation. You just get to choose who and where you want to read it from. Trey Mancini has had 50+ articles written about him in the last 24 hours. It’s all the same. I stopped counting after page 5 of the google search.

Jeff does have an interview with Trey (2/10/26). That’s definitely one was to differentiate yourself from the crowd., in a good way.

Eventually, if someone wants to earn the title of being respected, qualified, and reasonable… they have to leave their fandom aside.

Unfortunately, this site isn’t really gaining mastheads and/or subscribers so Jeff is between a rock and hard place. Succession planning for CtPG is hopefully going on. I know I’ve raised my hand to help multiple times.

There’s mixed bag right now for sure. I love the community events and covering them. Regardless of the organization, making kids happy deserves some digital ink.

I’ve also called out the worst performers in May, Arte’s lack of front office spending and the fact a salary cap might doom us to a longer stretch under his ownership, that Adell’s 2025 might be a fluke, and called Silent C needing to be off the roster. All in June.

Meantime, my staff has published a piece on the plane over the Latrine and another pointing out defense is killing the team.

I’m also looking at Google metrics as Google is the primary driver of traffic to the site. Transaction pieces like the Guzman one yesterday are getting more traffic because they compete with fewer other pieces. There are a billion Arte sucks hot takes out there including several of mine but fewer outlets cover actual news.

I think you’ll like my ramp up to the trade deadline, though. There are a few pieces painting Perry and Arte as the bumbling idiots there are on the way.

You’re right, we don’t know what was Murakami’s level of interest coming here. I’m assuming when money the even, Japanese players would lean SoCal over Chicago. Perry probably didn’t pursue as hard as he should’ve because Schanuel is our “franchise” first baseman and Soler hogs the DH spot.

Regardless of Murakami, Perry spent whatever money he had on shit because he can’t identify major league talent talent to save his life

Our starting pitching should be given more grace. Everything else in the organization top down (shÅrte to the janitor/brian sanders who thought it was a good idea to clean up trash/food from a night game the next morning… that was standard practice 🤢) should be ripped apart

Good — tank cannot be stopped
Good — starting pitching
Bad — Trout is washed
Bad — Neto admires every HR that scrapes by the wall
Good — Wally pitches today

Take the Houston opener and New York series out and his numbers look abysmal.

Latest Tarps Off article. I see more swirls of Mr Beast being a potential owner although I find that odd since everyone is referencing the same game (I was at) last year when he was sitting in the suites next to shÃrte.

Yuan Moncada to undergo knee surgery. Doesn’t Kirby Yates need some sort of surgery that he is late for? I mean, he really should be rushed to the IL so he can get some sort of “procedure” for an extended period, say November?
