Are You Not Entertained? Postgame

Prior to the first pitch there were three ejections in this game. Brent Suter was the lone Angel engaged in an epic national anthem stand off against two Rays relievers and their mascots. Nobody won the battle as all three pitchers were ejected but Suter won the way by sacrificing himself for two of them.

Tampa Bay might have preferred the stand off continue as the Angels opened up a can in the top of the first inning. Wace Meckler is making a big name for himself and cracked a grand slam to put the Angels up 4-0.

Meckler scored another run in the top of the 4th inning to push the Angels lead to 5-1. Then Mike Trout stepped up to the plate and did something he seems to always do at the Trop. He absolutely crushed a ball.

It wasn’t always easy today. The Angels escaped two bases loaded jams in the game. Jo Adell played a big part in ending the Rays rally in the bottom of the sixth. By that time they had cut the Angels lead to 6-3 and were threatening for more.

An insurance run by Zach Neto in the top of the 7th inning came at a cost. Zach Neto took the full force of a big body to the back of his neck and spent several minutes on the ground in obvious pain. He was ultimately able to walk off the field with a little assistance from the trainers but did not look good.

The offense will get the headlines today but the pitching also did their part. Reid Detmers looked solid for most of his start. Jose Fermin is getting overused and got himself into a jam but Sam Bachman got him off the hook and pitched another clean inning. Bachman is starting to look pretty good.

Chase Silseth was nearly tossed with Suter but left the stand off before the umpires got involved. He looked sharp in pitching a scoreless 8th inning. He was spotting a 96 MPH fastball on the corners. Outside of a flare double with two outs, Silseth was shutdown.

Old friend Andrew Wantz pitched for the Rays and allowed the Angels to tack on some late runs. But not before a really scary pitch up and in that glanced off Nick Madrigal’s hand then hit him in the face. Madrigal was only in because Neto was hurt. Wantz even served up a bizarre home run to Jo Adell.

The score got ridiculous by the end. Home runs, doubles, everybody got in on the act. Even Sebastian Rivero cracked an RBI double in the 9th inning that made the score 14-3.,

So many crazy things in one game. Are you not entertained?

The Meck, Pazuzu & Trout all had nice games. All 3 homered and the Trout got on base 4/5 times (Single, HR, 2 walks).

Detmers was solid enough following his dominant performance the last time out.

Meckler is magic, Detmers should be put into the Rodent Pen sometime in June.

Trout currently has more war than he ended with in the previous 4/6 seasons.

the biggest surprise in the college thing is Milwaukee. 25-31 coming in and they look to be one win away from a super regional

Remembered the game was on while running errands. Turned on the radio and was pleasantly surprised. Got home, got busy and completely missed the Rays bullpen doing their best Halo blowpen impression. Interesting game and if I had human, two-legged daughter I would gladly give Meckler her hand in marriage .

Two guys who have really impressed me this weekend in regional play:

Arkansas LHP Hunter Dietz
Virginia LHB AJ Gracia

Both have a decent shot of being available when the Angels select at #12.

Damn. The Rays blowpen went into full meltdown mode.

So having not watched the game, what was the Suter / mascot standoff all about? It’s perplexing without context.

Angels fan protests are becoming too loud to ignore, but team leadership is doing so anyway
by Sam Blum

ANAHEIM, Calif. โ€” After a week of protests against team ownership in and around the stadium, Los Angeles Angels manager Kurt Suzuki was asked a simple question before the teamโ€™s game on Sunday.

The shirtless fans are supportive of the team; theyโ€™re cheering for the Angels to win. Theyโ€™re also repeatedly yelling, โ€œSell the team.โ€ What has it been like hearing them this week?

Simple questions have proved to be difficult to answer for the Angels, who have plugged their ears and closed their eyes to a fanbase thatโ€™s been desperately trying to get its message across in the past week.

โ€œThey have the right to their opinion โ€ฆ I think itโ€™s pretty neat for (our players) to have that kind of support,โ€ Suzuki said, after a long and waffling preamble where he asked about other fanbases engaging in the โ€œTarps Offโ€ shirtless movement across baseball. โ€œIsnโ€™t that a social media thing? Is it? Was it remove the tarp, or the tarps something? Tarps off, or something like that.โ€

In Anaheim, โ€œTarps Offโ€ has been much more than a social media movement. What those fans, and many others, are looking for is an acknowledgement that their opinion has validity. Theyโ€™re not hearing it. The fans have been gaslit by an Angelsโ€™ ownership saying that winning isnโ€™t the fansโ€™ top priority. The Angelsโ€™ general manager has told them that the leagueโ€™s worst team has its โ€œbest baseballโ€ ahead of it.
Theyโ€™ve been told by the skipper that the losing is all one big cold stretch, not reflective of broader issues.

Angels fans, whose writ-large reputation is one of passivity, have become angry. Perfect weather, a dense Orange County population center, and justenough hope that the team will contend have kept attendance numbers at โ€œThe Big Aโ€ near the top in MLB for years.

But as fans protested with signs, shouts and shirts โ€” sometimes on, sometimes not โ€” it was clear the dynamic is changing, whether or not the team is willing to acknowledge that.
โ€œWeโ€™ve just watched the lack of investment, the not caring about the players, about the farm system,โ€ said Kristen Gallagher, an Angels season ticket holder for more than 40 years. โ€œYou just feel it. You feel it among the staff. We know the ushers in our section, and theyโ€™re also dejected.

โ€œItโ€™s even different from the pre-World Series (2002, when the Angels won their only title) days. People still had hope then.โ€

Angels fans gathered outside of Angel Stadium before Saturdayโ€™s game to demand change and urge Arte Moreno to sell the team.

Angels executive leadership declined to comment when asked for their thoughts on the protests. The Angels Baseball TV broadcasts have largely avoided showing the fans or acknowledging their persistent chants.

The Angelsโ€™ beloved all-time superstar, Mike Trout, who should not have to answer for the teamโ€™s leadership, similarly declined to wade deep into the topic.

โ€œI hear the chants for sure,โ€ Trout said earlier this week, when asked by Mike DiGiovanna. โ€œIt is what it is.โ€
The chants were very audible on the Angels television broadcast when they first began last Monday. However, in recent days โ€” even as the crowds of protesters metastasized to consume four or five sections โ€” it was far more difficult to make out what was being said.

The technology does exist to lower the volume on fan mics, said people familiar with the Angels broadcasts, who added that, like many teams, Angels officials have been known to call the production staff with audio requests related to fans yelling.
An Angels official said that no proactive action was taken in the last week to limit crowd noise on the telecasts, noting that the fans moved to a different part of the ballpark later in the week.

โ€œWe care enough to show up and to let our voices be heard,โ€ said Angels fan Johnny Gonzalez, who organized a protest outside the teamโ€™s parking lot before Saturdayโ€™s game. โ€œThatโ€™s what true fans do. They show up.โ€

The protest on Saturday was lively, as hundreds of cars honked in support on their way into the ballpark. One fan designed and printed โ€œSell the teamโ€ T-shirts to hand out. Inside the ballpark, thousands gathered with those shirts no longer being worn, chanting for change.

The players indulged them in a roll call, with shortstop Zach Neto even egging them on to be louder, after his name was called. These fans feverishly want the team to win, but are there because the hope that the Angels will win is mostly non-existent.

Across the field before Sundayโ€™s game was another (former) Angels supporter. Rangers manager Skip Schumaker, a SoCal native who spent many of his formative years coming to Angels games as a fan, was asked for his reaction to the protests. He smiled and said, โ€œNice try.โ€

โ€œI grew up an Angels fan,โ€ he said, waxing poetic about attending the 2002 World Series. โ€œYou want all organizations to be successful. Thatโ€™s all Iโ€™ll tell you.โ€
The one-time National League Manager of the Year wasnโ€™t necessarily going to touch it, but he didnโ€™t have to. Fan sentiment is clear. Both through a noticeable uptick in empty seats and outsized anger.

For years, the Angels have ignored the downward direction of the team. And now, with the consequence of that staring them in the face, theyโ€™re ignoring it some more.

In March 2023, Angels owner Arte Moreno was asked about his decision to retain ownership of the club and take it off the open market. Fans, at the time, were irate.

โ€œYou always have a vocal minority thatโ€™s not going to be happy no matter what,โ€ Moreno said.

Moreno can often be insulated from the criticism. He rarely attends games and is flanked by security when he does. The fans who do greet him often do so politely. In this world, heโ€™s still a celebrity. Heโ€™s off social media, he said, which is where so much of the criticism toward him has existed.

The protests, the chants and the anger probably wonโ€™t do much tangibly. But they do drop the illusion for Moreno, and force the reality of his failures to stand there in front of him without a shirt in sight.

He might believe itโ€™s a vocal minority. But theyโ€™re getting louder and growing larger. And the only one silent right now is Moreno and the people around him.

Maybe Arte just hears his own version of “Go Brandon.” Sail the team? Arte rocks?

They were probably wise to try, as it was still a line drive that defeated them.

But yeah, such an improbable comeback after 18 innings of 0-for RISP situations and 11 men LOB in the game for UCLA.

Sometimes a great comeback can really generate a bunch of momentum for a team that was struggling.
