Prior to the first pitch there were three ejections in this game. Brent Suter was the lone Angel engaged in an epic national anthem stand off against two Rays relievers and their mascots. Nobody won the battle as all three pitchers were ejected but Suter won the way by sacrificing himself for two of them.
Tampa Bay might have preferred the stand off continue as the Angels opened up a can in the top of the first inning. Wace Meckler is making a big name for himself and cracked a grand slam to put the Angels up 4-0.
Meckler scored another run in the top of the 4th inning to push the Angels lead to 5-1. Then Mike Trout stepped up to the plate and did something he seems to always do at the Trop. He absolutely crushed a ball.
It wasn’t always easy today. The Angels escaped two bases loaded jams in the game. Jo Adell played a big part in ending the Rays rally in the bottom of the sixth. By that time they had cut the Angels lead to 6-3 and were threatening for more.
An insurance run by Zach Neto in the top of the 7th inning came at a cost. Zach Neto took the full force of a big body to the back of his neck and spent several minutes on the ground in obvious pain. He was ultimately able to walk off the field with a little assistance from the trainers but did not look good.
The offense will get the headlines today but the pitching also did their part. Reid Detmers looked solid for most of his start. Jose Fermin is getting overused and got himself into a jam but Sam Bachman got him off the hook and pitched another clean inning. Bachman is starting to look pretty good.
Chase Silseth was nearly tossed with Suter but left the stand off before the umpires got involved. He looked sharp in pitching a scoreless 8th inning. He was spotting a 96 MPH fastball on the corners. Outside of a flare double with two outs, Silseth was shutdown.
Old friend Andrew Wantz pitched for the Rays and allowed the Angels to tack on some late runs. But not before a really scary pitch up and in that glanced off Nick Madrigal’s hand then hit him in the face. Madrigal was only in because Neto was hurt. Wantz even served up a bizarre home run to Jo Adell.
The score got ridiculous by the end. Home runs, doubles, everybody got in on the act. Even Sebastian Rivero cracked an RBI double in the 9th inning that made the score 14-3.,
So many crazy things in one game. Are you not entertained?
