Angels Slam Yankees, Split Series

Final day at Yankee Stadium and it is in the morning. While those who would want to watch have to sneak a peek from Work or School, these players have to go back out there and try and get a split on what should be a sweep. 3 straight games with the lead in the 9th, 2 Losses. And now we have what is essentially a bullpen game vs the Yankees healthy Ace.

So how was this pitching anyway? Suter was the opener, I guess. He went more than 1 inning, so more of a tandem start guy. Angels should really try that, have their 5th spot be their 5th and 6th starters tandem starting. He went 2+ innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. Alright, so more of a 10 batter opener after all.

The offense was more straightforward, score more, hit home runs, and keep piling on so the bullpen doesn’t blow it AGAIN. And they did their job, again carried by Trout, but also Oswald, who was making his former team cry. And of course, the man of the month, Jo Adell hit a GRAND SLAM to keep a certain pitcher from blowing it.

Highlighted Recap

The Angels struck first with an Oswald Peraza 2 run home run in the first!

2-0 Angels

Unfortunately, Judge cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 1st.

2-1 Angels

Suter faced 1 batter in the 3rd, who was walked, and then caught stealing, so his day was done. But Sandlin allowed a baserunner and a then a home run to Stanton.

3-2 MFY

Sandlin did not last long. 1 and third. Then came Aldegheri.

Defense continued to be great for the Angels (besides that one from yesterday) as Jo Adell continued to be a great RF-er

Gold Glove Defnese

And Nolan made a great catch in the 5th.

Nice job

Aldegheri was now the pitcher of record as the Angels tied it up with an Oswald double in the 6th.

TIED GAME!

And then a Grissom single to take the lead!

4-3 Angels!

Josh Lowe then blooped a single to score 2 more.

6-3 Angels

Which was needed as the MFY hit a home run immediately in the bottom of the 6th.

6-4 Angels

That was it for him, Sam Bachman time. And he has a great pickoff move

GOT HIM

Yeah, Mike Trout is back, as he hit his 5th home run of the series in the 7th.

7-4 Angels

So the Angels were still in Ramano range so they needed more. What about 4 more? Like a JO ADELL GARND SLAM!

11-4 ANGELS

Now THAT was a lead, and one that a certain pitcher should NOT pitch the 9th for. So instead, it was Silseth, who did his job. Angels win, back to .500 AGAIN.

Upcoming

3 Game series at the Big A hosting the Padres. CTPG meetup there on Sunday at 1PM.

I’ll take a split against the Yankees on the road but it should have been a sweep if not for Romano.

I would be remiss to not mention Bachman. 3 innings of 0 runs allowed.

Some are questioning the wisdom of having him go 3. Not me. We HAD to get this one and prior to the Jo Slam, the game was within reach. He was pitching well and Kurt made the correct call IMO.

He’ll be available by Saturday.

Plus Bachman only threw 27 pitches, or about what Sandlin and Aldegheri threw in their less than 2 innings of work.

The air seems fresher & the sun seems brighter when Michael Nelson Trout is playing like this.

Game balls to Jo, Oswald, MNT and Lowe. The latter’s 2-run bloop single during a long at bat, was HUGE at that moment.

5th Starter – I figure someone will emerge between the grab bag of Dana, Klassen & Rodriguez. I’m more concerned about getting Kikuchi back on track – or at least average. In Mike Maddux we trust…

Is it too early to cast about for a solid BP piece via trade?

This division seems open for the taking.

If not for the two games in this series the Angels coughed up, the Yankees would have a nine game losing streak.

A great bounce back win today, especially considering the Yanks started their best pitcher and Halos had a bullpen game.

Trout is only one of four players who has hit five homes in a series in Yankee stadium, including Jimmie Foxx. Elite company. Trout was hitting .195 at start of road trip, now hitting. 246.

Adell has had quite a couple of weeks.

Please don’t play Moncada anymore and no more Romano anytime soon.

I don’t consider myself a Moncada fan, but over his last 5 games he went 6 for 17 with a homerun, scored 4 runs, drove in 4 runs and had 4 walks vs 6 strikeouts. Doesn’t sound like a bat that needs to be benched to me.

Good stuff.

I’ll D-Ride Trout a bit more. What a difference 4 games makes. Coming into NYC, most of us were VERY concerned. Five homers – all clutch – and a .50 point swing in batting average later, and it all looks very different.

Looking forward to tomorrow night’s game. We’ll be there. If anyone is around, hit me up if you want to have an adult beverage before the game.

Mike Trout = .246 / .416 / .594

Jo Adell = .309 / .349 / .432

Zach Neto = .238 / .358 / .475

Oswald Peraza = .269 / .345 / .558

They have doing some damage for sure. Langston said since Trout changer his batting approach, he now plants his front foot and lifts his back foot up and down as pitcher delivers, his hitting has really taken off.

Keep Moncada out of line up.

Peraza is the real surprise here.

I still want to see Trout with a significantly higher batting average – even if his OBP drops a bit.

Peraza was mashing the ball with high EVs all ST. It felt real then, it feels even realer now.

Times have changed, it’s hard to get used to the lower numbers. Believe it or not, before today’s game. Trout’s OPS+ was 170, which is very close to his career number. After today it’s even higher. OPS+ is relative to the league and adjusts to league averages. For Trout’s career he is 69% better than average compared to his peers. Before the last couple of years, He was tied with Mickey Mantle at 72% better. At one point, Trout was actually at 73%. The last few years have really brought that down.

Why not make Silseth the closer? Romano obvs no bueno in high-leverage scenarios.

Same. I’d like to see Perry swing a trade for a BP piece.

I know, I know, it’s early and we might overpay a bit. That said, this division seems ripe for the picking.

Let’s blow less 9th inning leads, Mmmkkaayyy

While I’m glad to see a split here- & the team at 500, I really wish the team do something about the bullpen. Getting tired of it blowing leads- leading to a big number of the team losses thus far this season.

I said it before, but again; a top starter and re-signing Jansen this could have been a strong 500+ team. Stupid Arte, could have put money into pitching, had a pretty good team this yr, then be content with himself and sell.

Thoughts in no particular order:

  • 2 blown saves shy of a sweep, oh what could have been.
  • That Trout guy is so hot right now
  • Neto seems to be the only hitter than hasn’t gotten with Brady’s program. He has gone backwards where the rest of the team is showing immensely improved patience.
  • Is Peraza this year’s Kyren or was that a slick trade by Perry? Not ready to get excited about this one yet but it’s been fun so far.
  • Suzuki absolutely sucks at managing the bullpen. I didn’t think it could get worse than Nevin here we are.
  • Absolutely LOVING the season Adell is having so far.
  • We really need a fifth starting pitcher.
  • Is the Angels offense legitimately one of the best in MLB or is this unsustainable? The team has feasted on some elite pitchers so far this year.

Nolan is the main laggard in the lineup. I have confidence he’ll get it going soon enough.

Re: 5th starter — Dana is making his AAA debut tonight. I’m banking on him taking control of the last rotation spot 🤞🏼

Actually, Nolan, O’Hoppe, and Lowe with OPS+s of 82, 83, and 49 respectively. Finding a replacement for Lowe and finding a 5th starter are two things that could make a real difference right now. For all the raving about Adell, he actually started the day with a lower OPS+ than he finished with last year. Today will definitely push that up. It will be interesting to see what he does going forward. He isn’t walking, so his OBA is completely driven by his BA and before the last few games, he only had 1 extra base hit, so he had a nice BA but nothing else. This series he’s started to pick up. Nolan’s performance as a major leaguer has been very consistent. He will likely end the year with an OPS+ between 105 and 110.

Lastly, as fun as the last 20 games have been, and they have been fun and entertaining, we had to win today to be .500, and we have done that with a lot of things going our way. If we played the rest of the season like we have so far, I would be very happy and consider the season a big success. There would be many things to be happy about with the potential to be better moving forward with a few key position player acquisitions.

With all that said, some of the things that have happened so far that have enabled us to be where we are, are not likely to be sustainable but I will enjoy it as long as it lasts even if it’s the whole season. It is also highly unlikely that most of the AL continues to play around .500 for the rest of the season. It would be a breath of fresh air though if the organization looked at things after the first 20 games and addressed the few things mentioned that could make us better and possibly help us play over .500. going forward.

Neto is walking at like a 15% clip. This is not the nit to pick with Neto after the series he had

That’s a good call. I honestly didn’t realize he was walking that much, and his strikeout rate is about where it was last year.

Just felt like he was a little lost at the plate this series.

I think we are legit offensively, though the K rate still needs to come down a bit. The Braves are the best pitching team in MLB and we scored 7 in our one win vs them…. The Yankees were one of the top pitching teams coming in to the series and we demolished them ! We have hit against some good teams, not all against slouches.

At this moment we are 2nd to only the Dodgers in HR’s. We are tied for 3rd in RUNS. And,we still lead in WALKS. Not bad.

I don’t like Suzuki. Romano needs to be pulled from the closer role. He blew a multi run lead. Had an opportunity again and blows it. Sure we made a big error but sometimes you need to pick up your team. This was his comments on Romano. The last couple games have been tough,” Suzuki said. “He was really good to start the year, and then the last couple games have been tough. We’ll probably take a look at it and see what’s going on.”

Offense powered by Brady’s Secret Stuff 🧃

I have waited patiently for Trout and Adell to share an outfield together and terrorize opposing pitchers. Let me tell y’all, it was damn worth the wait!

Should’ve swept this series. LT👼🏼 U !!!

Potentially good lineup.

But the rotation and bullpen is going to hold them back (and has several times already.) In their complete entirety, they are still an incomplete team.

We aren’t bad! There’s no org depth to sustain any sort of major injury, but there are some positive signs — offense is legit and we have 3/5 of a starting rotation.

We are dealing with injuries already – Joyce, Grayson, Johnson, Yates. Any of them coming back means we could shore up (or ditch) Romano and send Anderson to the minors.

JackFrost

Don’t need to wait — just demote Romano to middle relief. Anderson can do a hybrid role of long-reliever and bridge guy and let Zef-Silseth-Bachman mix and match to cover 7-9th.

Also have Pomeranz to face tough lefties in high leverage.

I’m glad you’ve come around not outright DFAing Romano haha!

Who’s this Anderson you’re speaking of? The worst pitcher in baseball, Shaun Anderson? That’s who actually needs to be DFAd 😂

Anderson is what he is. He’s a long reliever. In that role he is actually okay. I believe he’s better than the 6.93 ERA indicates. At least enough to be functional in his role.

That said, I would not want him pitching high leverage innings.

As regards Romano the DFA is preferable to remove sharp objects that Suzuki might play with. That said, if he is put in middle relief where he couldn’t hurt us as much I could live with that.

In the last 3 seasons he has registered -1.4 WAR and a 8.63 ERA in 38 IP.

Do you know how hard that is to do? He’s the worst pitcher in the majors.

Faint praise indeed. There has to be someone, anyone, in the organization or on the street that can pitch as poorly as Romano.

And he isn’t the only one, we had some dude pitching today with an ERA higher than our national debt. I know stats can skew wildly this early in the season, but, geez.

Pineapple12

Joyce and GRod are hugely injury prone themselves, hard to rely on them as anything more than a bonus; Yates is old and there is no guarantee he isn’t washed; RJ has no business pitching in the majors this year.

An injury to one of our critical players (Sori, Trout, Neto, Adell) would derail the season pretty quickly. A worry for another day tho 🙂
