LA Angels Monday News Crash:

Here are some fun clips from the game last Friday.

As for Sunday, Jose Soriano is historically good. That’s obviously better than historically bad. The Angels selected the contract of right-hander Nick Sandlin and optioned George Klassen to Triple-A Salt Lake. They reinstated Vaughn Grissom from the IL and DFAd Jeimer Candelario. Joey Lucchesi didn’t get away altogether as the Angels re-signed him to a minor league deal.

In other baseball news, the Mets will select Tommy Pham. The Braves DFAd Martin Perez.

Nick Pivetta has elbow stiffness. Christian Yelich has a hamstring injury. Tyler O’Neill is on the concussion related IL. Hunter Harvey went on the 15 day IL with right triceps inflammation. George Springer is on the IL with a broken toe.

Former big ;league manager Phil Garner passed away at the age of 76.

Ryan Johnson left an Arizona start after only 2 pitches. Doesn’t bode well https://x.com/jesus_cano88/status/2043782727049285743?s=46

I wonder if he was just feeling sick from the viral infection or if there was an arm issue?

The Angels are third in the AL in runs despite being near the bottom in BA and middle of the pack in OPS.

Reversion to the mean probably incoming.

We are near the bottom in BA, but as I showed below we are 1st in the entire Major Leagues in Walks !!

That’s true and is definitely part of what’s propping us up. We are second in home runs too!

Still, despite all of that our OPS is middle of the pack.

OR – maybe not. Maybe this team will scratch and claw and take a walk or get hit by a pitch and move runners over and get them in by whatever means necessary. There have been other crappy teams like this one (most people’s opinion) that have “found a way” to be successful. These other teams have even managed to fight and contend for a playoff spot.

Soriano is the MLB AL player of the week! Hell yeah!

I was talking with my son this weekend about how dumb it was the Angels didn’t get something for Ohtani. We discussed the idea of saying to him “Hey Shohei – we want you back next year. But what if we made the team much better and got you a chance at the playoffs this year? When you come back, we’ll have added a great prospect.” I think a lot of players would say, “heck ya.” Some wouldn’t – but others want to win.

So we got to talking a little more about players that don’t expire at the end of the season and we came up with an idea to help add more parity into the league and to insure the best players are in the playoffs and to help losing teams offset their payroll in a down year. Teams could trade their guy for the rest of the season – pick up prospects – offset some of the money cost – and the player returns next season with them picking up a prospect. The players win because it’s less risky for a team to take on a contract for longer term and more money when they can offset some or all the payroll in a down year. They are kind of like a guest player. They could add in different ways to execute – an option to acquire back – all kinds of things. The richer teams give up some prospects to the teams that need them because they want to win this year. Insurance companies can come up with policies and make money too.

What are the gaps?

Gap that immediately jumps out to me is player having a season ending injury on the temporary team and then missing playing time for the normal team the following year / never coming back the same. No matter the insurance, the normal team is risking losing that players performance in perhaps the upswing of a rebuild or something along those lines.

But he could get hurt during his season too. They don’t have to do the deal – they can weight the risks.

I’m not too proud to admit the team has thus far outperformed my expectations of them. Here’s a deep hopium huff that it continues!

Soriano has come into his own and is delivering the results of a top of the rotation ace.

I’m proudly wearing my Halo cap around these days.

Just out of curiosity, thoughts about the impending 2027 lockout affecting possible sale of the team? Is Arte waiting until MLB is a going concern again? Yes, I think a missing season is a mortal lock at this point.

If we are looking for positives and reasons to feel hopeful about this team, we need look no further than our newly formed “Ace,” Jose Soriano. Not only does he lead the League in W’s with 4, but he leads all of Major League baseball in both ERA (at 0.33) AND in strikeouts (with 31). I swear, if Arte lets this guy walk I won’t watch another game until Arte sells the team or is dead, whichever comes first !

Another positive is that we lead the entire Major Leagues in walks !! Hooray ! Now, if we could just cut down on the strikeouts and improve the contact and runs generated off of singles and doubles… Yesterday was a move in the right direction as far as that is concerned.

For me, this team is Neto, Adell, and now Soriano and a bunch of filler until the team is sold and competent management is brought in.

To the person who thought I was being “miserable” for my reaction to the bullpen meltdown yesterday… Why direct that accusation just at me ? You should be calling multiple people “miserable” based upon yesterday’s gamethread ….. Here :

You enjoyed watching the bullpen implode and turn what should have been a comfortable and uneventful final three innings into a nailbiter and stress filled experience ?? Is that your idea of fun ?
A couple of other posters, like me, did NOT enjoy the Kurt Suzuki bullpen experience. To the point where one felt compelled to turn off the game — from “tanana40”

We are up 9-3 and I had to turn the game off

And further from tanana :

I could not take it anymore.

We also have MH252525 who was inspired to profanity based on Suzuki :

….And how the hell do you let a guy walk 3 guys with a 9 run lead when the bullpen is more than fresh. F’ing idiotic

So, Simba, are tanana40 and MH2525 “miserable” or is that designation only reserved for me ????

It wasn’t just the bullpen; it was also the bad fielding. The reality is that I know the Angels are not going to compete for a pennant this year, but I still want them to win. I cannot help myself from wanting them to win games.

I am right there with you tanana. That is why when people justify the suckitude by saying “What do you expect?” , or saying “You should just be happy with a victory”, you and I don’t buy it. Because we want to see winning baseball !

The Braves got up 9-0 on the Guardians last night….Did their bullpen give up 6 runs in the last two innings and put the outcome in jeopardy ? No. And the Twins were up 8-1 after 6 innings and only gave up a single run the rest of the way against the Jays. Those teams did not implode.

We should not be doing that either…

I sign on to the narrative that this bullpen sucks and no lead is safe. It barely survived a nine run lead, what will happen in closer games. It doesn’t really matter this year as the team isn’t built to win.

Jack, was just saying EHC had a point which you denied and I quoted you directly to show that he was closer to being correct than you. Yes bitching about players and managers is part of the fan blog experience, but you are sooooo prolifically negative. This team is full of weak spots – there are going to be lots of failures to execute – there’s no point in dwelling on them or you will indeed be miserable.

Saying what somene might become is not the same as saying what they are. You previously said I am miserable. And saying that I am “prolifically negative” is just ignoring the facts right in front of you. They are right here in THIS thread. I have posted several posititve things about the Angels just today.

But don’t worry about it — if people can just say whatever they want here then I can just say you’re a stupid asshole.

Frosty is on the positive side of the spectrum with P12 and yourself, I’ve actually been surprised at how he’s remained positive but allowed some realism to slip in. We all want the team to win every night but we’re .500 after 16 games with all kinds of things going our way. At some point we are in for a regression. Soriano and Special K are not going to win every start and we’ll see if Neto can maintain his current HOF level 160 OPS+. The bullpen has also been almost lights out, yesterday notwithstanding. We’ll see if that continues as well. We’re not very good defensively and our pitching is pretty sketchy. These things will catch up to us but for now we can enjoy the ride.

Sure, though we should reasonably expect more production from Trout, Lowe and Kikuchi to balance out the inevitable regression from the players you mentioned.

No doubt. Some will get better and some will get worse. And I’m not saying that Neto for sure won’t maintain his current level or a level higher than the last two years. I would not be shocked if Neto took a big step forward this year.

As surprised as I’ve been at times this season, the team isn’t performing any better than in the recent past. Looking at the first 16 games for the past 3 seasons, we have:
Year RS RA W L
2026 73 78 8 8
2025 75 78 9 7
2024 74 79 8 8

A record of 72-90 still looks more likely than something closer to 81-81.

That is one way to look at it. Then when he leaves during free agency, and heads over to the LA Deferrals, we will still not have the ace pitcher or any top prospect yutes in the system to fill the void. A conundrum.

JackFrost

You know the way to avoid that? You give him his props now and pay him. You pay your respects with $$, the same way the Royals did with Witt Jr. You don’t let the guy even get to Free Agency….and in the process you save yourself tons of money. Rendon is coming off the books, so if you are Perry that is how you present this to Arte.. If a small market team like the Royals can keep their stud then we can too !!

Bingo. The proven strategy is to pay them early when you can lock them down for an amount of money both sides can live with. You let Soriano and Neto turn into bona fide stars their agents are going to now demand market rates and extension gets that much harder. You let them walk away for nothing then yeah, you got some good years from them but probably didn’t do the smartest thing from a long term compete perspective (even if it sucks for the fans, looking at you TB)

Ryan wanted to stay.

The Beloved Cowboy wanted Ryan to stay. But did not intervene as his “good baseball man” knew better.

Buzzie “two 8-7 pitchers” didn’t like Ryan was loved and Bavasi loathed.
