LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Games!

The first full week of Cactus League action is a wrap and there’s not much news to link.

Arte’s comments about not winning are clearly the most noteworthy thing that happened. I really enjoyed smacking him On SI and that piece has gotten the most views of anything I’ve published there. I know some of those are from you folks and I appreciate it.

I then doubled down on some key free agents that would have really helped the Angels this year without costing nearly what Arte said he’d need to spend. Put those guys on the team and it is at least watchable and worth being on TV.

As far as games go, George Klassen stole the show for me. At least the show I was able to watch.

The kid was flat out nasty and mowed through SD quickly and efficiently. I’ve been talking the kid up all off season and think he’s going to make an impact in 2026.

Klassen leads my list of prospects who should make their debuts this year.

Another great sight to see, or not see, was Tyler Bremner working in the bullpen but not being put into games.

I can’t emphasize enough how not Angels this is. If you’re looking for a sign of a real rebuild it is the Angels doing the opposite with Bremner that they’ve done with Neto, Schanuel, and Moore.

Klassen, Bremner, Soriano, Detmers...are the Angels actually developing some good starting pitching? Not a ton of it, but there’s enough to think the ship is pointing in the right direction.

One young hurler I did not name is fireballer Joel Hurtado, who spoke with me after pitching against the Giants.

Yes, I did just sneak an interview in mid links. Joel spoke to me from the Angels redone locker room in Tempe and was nice enough to show it to me via Zoom. Great kid, really hope he works out.

Limited sample size and all due to the games not being on TV, but Christian Moore’s blast off Michael King was the best at bat I’ve seen so far. It looks like the Angels are giving Moore all the opportunity to earn the second base job.

On the surface, second base looks like an old fashioned WWF melee with Moore, Vaughn Grissom, Adam Frazier, and Nick Madrigal all vying for the spot. But the competition is not as open as it appears.

If you take a look at the MLB roster and the lack of AAA depth, player options will go a long way towards deciding who gets a hat.

From around baseball:

Mad Max is back in Toronto on a one year deal. I really hope the baseball gods give us Max vs. Verlander this summer.

The big story from camp is the automated balls and strikes system. Give our friend Jeff Fletcher a read.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I’m going to spend my time with my family and try to crank out lots of content for SI tonight so I have some free time.

It will be interesting to see what happens if the Padres get sold.

Will they get close to 3 billion? If so, does that help Arte sell?

Joe Lacob may buy the team. Will CtPG Guy get to see how that works?

The Padres are EXACTLY the team fanboy always cries out for. They are spending WAY over what conventional wisdom says their small market can support for payroll. They have had success. Their stadium is awesome and they sell a ton of tickets. They are the only team in their market.

So if “The owner can spend 500mil on payroll and still make tons of money” guy is right then magic new unicorn owner should up the payroll right? And it should work right? And he’ll stick with that high payroll long term, not just a “new owner boost” correct?

If tech billionaire buys the team then clearly his $100 bottled water sense of excellence will carry the day and the team will run like a well oiled machine and win tons of games right?

Does extending AJ Preller screw any of this up?

It’s kind of nice to send the Padres fans into that mine field ahead of us.

I don’t understand why so many of us have thrown a pile of cayenne pepper in our panties over what Arte said.

Again. We won people. This is what you wanted. Transparency. So many of you have been saying that Arte thinks this way for soooooooooo many years. Now he’s finally actually being the cheap Arte you’ve been asking for and he’s actually dumb enough to come out and call a spade a spade. And you’re shocked and angry? Like this is the Crying Game with baseball ownership? Why are you so enflamed over something some of you have been saying since 2009 or something?

This is yet another win you’ve been begging the universe to gift you. Our owner has finally stopped trying to spend on players and cobble together a fake contender. He’s just come out and said winning isn’t a priority now. I for one have been hoping we all get to actually experience a club that is truly a total dumpster fire, instead of just bitching about our club like its one, for years now. We’re there. True bottom. Victory is ours. Revel in it. Bask in the transparency. We did it people! Yes we can!

Arte’s notion that for fans winning isn’t a top priority is asinine. Sure, adults enjoy taking their family to a game, even if the team is crap, but that family would have a much better experience if the team was contending. More fans would attend, more money would be spent, etc.

If fans have rooted for Arte’s demise, it’d be for the sole purpose of getting the team on a winning path since him and his people can’t seem to do it. Nobody is holding a “Sell Arte” sign at a game because they want to feel more safe at the stadium, its because Arte and his people run the team like shit.

For some reason Arte is a lot like CtPG Guy when he has an agenda. He’s stuck with the way things are. He can’t change the facts. But he’s still got to keep what ever mental image he has of things alive WHILE addressing the actual situation.

It would be a lot easier to just say “Man, we’ve tried some stuff that really didn’t work and we are way off track. We’re gonna have to go in a different direction and we are gonna suck for a minute here. I hate it, but it’s gotta happen.”

He doesn’t have to be a total poon about it. Come out and fulfill GtPG Guy’s gooey fantasy where he drops to his knees and cries out in agony “I am not as smart as interwebs fan guy! I did not listen to him and his incredible wisdom. This team sucks now and it’s all because of my dark and prideful heart! If only I’d listened to Dick Richardson, 61 year old semi-successful volunteer high school baseball coach in Redlands! I am a noxious worm full of sin….”

He can totally avoid saying he and his friends suck. He’s human. I expect that. I don’t see any of the total idiots on this site ever admitting how stupid they are either. But he’s tried to spin the bad situation into a “surprisingly refreshing version of not as bad as you might think” for some damn reason. Like there’s some “brand” he sees in his head that he’s trying to protect and he thought “fans don’t care that much about wins” somehow does that. It’s not clear what his goals are here and he’s clearly not getting the effect he wanted.

He also clearly doesn’t actually use a PR person. He’s just flailing.

Yeah, I agree, he said it without thinking there could be a negative reaction to it. Shows how truly out of touch he is as a sports franchise owner. Its gotta be one of the top things an owner or GM knows they should never ever say out loud.

More importantly, you know Dick from Redlands too? Small world

I think I’m done… since Arte’s comment.
I hear Sony is more concerned about safety in theaters than making good movies.
Major restaurants are more concerned about affordability than making food that is palatable.
….
I’m out.
Still will check in here but I am no longer an Angel fan.
Not watching bad movies or eating at McDonalds either.

Soriano’s stuff was electric yesterday.

Right-hander José Soriano gave up three runs on five hits in three innings. Soriano finished with a perfect third. Soriano hit 100 mph four times. He only reached that threshold eight times all of last season. “It means a lot because I’m healthy and can throw harder without trying to throw hard, and that’s a good thing,” Soriano said. “I’m not focusing on that right now, just trying to focus throw strike and I think I was pounding the zone.” Although Soriano walked a batter and hit a batter, he threw 40 strikes among his 59 pitches.

They really look like they are going to be taking an Effective Velocity approach.

Gosh I hope so. Detmers and Manoah’s fastballs are pretty weak tho. We really see the velo push with our farmhands

I still think Detmers ends up back in the pen unless they are completely out of viable arms.

I hope that Detmers reaches his potential goals of being a very good starter, after all he does have some history of being very good starter so maybe he can put it together with Maddox on board. 😀

To quote the CtPG Poet Laureate: “but what about feelz?”

I believe Feelz is a word of Norse origin…. it’s a small wooden ship….

And I feel like they are gonna trot Detmers out there unless he’s hurt. It’s a “non-compete” season. Perfect time for Reid to shit or get off the pot. The Angels have to do the same. He’s either a pen arm after 2026, a success who they extend, or a success who they trade.

But he’s gonna be something by the middle of this season, and the only way to sort that out is to start him.

Wherever Detmers ends up, and whatever our rotation and bullpen looks like, Maddox is going to be a busy man. We literally have 3 rebuilds penciled into our rotation. Even if two hit decently, a lot of guys will be getting their shots. Klassen, Johnson and Bremner could all get rotation chances early.

Silent C. There’s a semi-forgotten name. He’s the dark dark horse. Another guy who is an excellent “if only” pitcher. If only Maddox could get him to do a couple things he becomes serviceable. we shall see.
