LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Kids!

We entered 2025 hoping for improvement by the young core leading to improvement in the win/loss column. We hoped to see a healthy Mike Trout entertain us and that the farm would look better at the end of the year than it did in March. On those counts, the 2025 season has been a success.

This week featured really nice starts by two Angels farmhands. First Mitch Farris picked up a win in his debut while tossing 5 solid innings. His overall line was pretty respectable. He allowed 3 hits and 1 run while walking 2 and striking out 3. His first K will be quite memorable, too, as it came against superstud Bobby Witt Jr.

Farris was the return for Davis Daniel and I linked this TBW post about him last week. He’s been a bit of an afterthought on the farm, but is putting up some impressive peripherals.

A guy who has been front and center on the farm took the ball the following night. Caden Dana is still only 22 and probably would have been making his MLB debut in a deeper organization. The kid straight out of central casting (you have to love that surfer’s flow) looked the best we’ve seen him in quite a while.

Two things really stood out for me in Dana’s start. One is how well his changeup can work when his fastball is under control. That change piece froze some really good hitters and could be a real weapon. The second is the poise he showed in the third inning when the Angels defense let him down and an error made it 2nd + 3rd with one run in and 0 outs instead of 2nd + 3rd with no runs in and 1 out. Dana stayed poised and executed his pitches well. His ability to escape the jam and limit the damage to 2 runs gave the Angels a chance to come back and win the game.

Thanks largely to Farris and Dana, the Angels secured a series win in Kansas City. That counters a series loss in Texas that sandwiches a 4 game split in Houston. All in all, a pretty solid road trip for this group.

The series split in Houston was aided greatly by fellow kid Oswald Peraza coming up clutch Saturday night. Peraza has been playing first base this week and making the most of his opportunity, going 6 for 17 with a double and a home run.

I keep linking this kid but that’s because he keeps putting up highlights. Jo Adell’s second 3 run home run in KC is this week’s Highlight of the Week. Jo has pretty much developed into the power over hit guy with solid RF defense we hoped for.

If you don’t follow Turk’s Teeth on X, do it. Between him and TBW you’ll get a really good look at the Angels farm. This week he put a new kid on our radar.

Does this team need a lot of help? Yes. Will there be enough in the next 6 months to make 2026 glorious? I’d be heavily against it. But there are incremental steps being taken. I wish the team added more prospects at the deadline, but they are currently on pace to win 76 games while the kids improve.

Hopefully Christian Moore becomes another piece of the puzzle. He’s struggled at the MLB level but in other organizations would have never been in the bigs. It is definitely way too early to give up on him and he’s taking to AAA quite well.

Unfortunately, Christian Moore lost his rookie eligibility by being on the MLB roster for more than 45 days. While the likelihood of his winning a ROY and getting the Angels draft compensation was small the begin with, it is now zero.

I’m not sure how many of these kids will part of the 2026 team. We also don’t know who will manage the 2026 team. Sam the Hat took a look at 5 potential candidates and I only like 1 of them. Ray Montgomery clearly should not manage. Ron Washington’s health needs to be his primary concern. Skip Shumaker would be really nice. Pujols and Torii Hunter are head scratchers but this is Arte Moreno.

From around baseball:

I love reaction videos. The face you make when you see a 120 MPH home run deserves one. It got a great write up by FanGraphs.

Ippei’s bookie was sentenced to a little over a year in prison last week and spojke about Ippei’s betting habits. He also stated he saw the wires came from Ohtani’s account. Last I checked, receiving stolen property was a crime. How is receiving millions in stolen money coming from an account you know is not your customer’s not a crime?

The Seattle Mariners are in a tailspin but Cal Raleigh is giving Aaron Judge a serious threat for the AL MVP award. That race is really heating up as Judge keeps putting up MVP numbers.

As of Thursday afternoon, Seattle sits 2.5 games above KC and Tampa Bay and just 1.5 games ahead of Texas for the final Wild Card spot. Seattle and KC play a series later this month. Our Angels also have a chance to play spoiler against KC and Seattle.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. My weekend is jam packed, highlighted by celebrating my Nana’s 85th birthday. I realize what a blessing it is to be able to call her on my drive to work and see her when I’m back home. She’s absolutely amazing and I’m so happy my son is close with her. Then we get to baptize a friend’s son the following day.

Speaking of “young cores”, ESPN (McDaniel) has ranked core talent of all 30 MLB teams.
The Angels ranked….drumroll please….28th. If you’ve been watching without being in a hopium induced haze, this isn’t a surprise. We were rated higher than only the White Sox and Rockies. Not good.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46158532/mlb-rankings-core-talent-locked-contracts-dodgers-mariners-mets-phillies

The top 10 were: Dodgers, Mariners, Phillies, Mets, Braves, Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Astros, Orioles, Guardians.

Yes, this is subjective. Yes, it is not perfect. Yes, this is a “snapshot in time” that (hopefully) will improve in the not too distant future. When aggregating multiple sources of data such as Baseball Reference, Fan Graphs, MLB, etc., the consistency in the overall analysis regarding the Angels is stark. As Albert Einstein once said: “the data don’t lie”.

As we head toward the home stretch of the 2025 season, it’s time for my annual ranking of the core talent of all 30 MLB teams. This judges teams based on which players they have under contract through the next two full seasons — and you’ll find many clubs at the top of this list are in the thick of the playoff races over the final month.

For this exercise, salaries don’t matter and age isn’t a factor — but I’ll round up on projecting young players (and down on older players) because I’m projecting/ranking teams for a two-plus-year period. Very few players in either level of A-Ball are listed because they likely will contribute only at the end of 2027, if at all, even if they’re a top prospect.

To make it easier to see which team has more talent, I split players into three tiers: elite (5ish WAR talent, or perennial All-Stars with MVP chances), plus (3-5ish WAR types) and solid (1.5-3ish WAR, or lower-end starters and valuable role players). I included players who have easy-to-hit vesting options or club/player options that are likely to be picked up, but left out players with likely-to-be-exercised opt-outs. There’s some subjectivity in this area; star players who don’t qualify are called out below.

28. Los Angeles Angels
2024 rank: 28
2023 rank: 27
2022 rank: 21

Elite: None

Plus: Zach Neto/SS, Jose Soriano/RHS

Solid: Mike Trout/RF, Yusei Kikuchi/LHS, Jo Adell/CF, Reid Detmers/LHR, Nolan Schanuel/1B, Christian Moore/2B, Logan O’Hoppe/C, Tyler Bremner/RHS, George Klassen/RHS, Kyren Paris/SS, Caden Dana/RHS, Nelson Rada/CF, Denzer Guzman/SS

Soriano, Detmers, Bremner, Klassen, and Dana are five solid pitchers to build around, along with veteran Kikuchi, but it’s unlikely all of them pitch on the same staff.

Trout unfortunately has to be moved down a tier as he has posted 2.2 WAR over the past two seasons combined. Taylor Ward’s under contract through next year so he falls off the list. Neto is a clear keeper, and Adell is starting to put it together, but there aren’t a ton of position players right behind them in the system, so the Angels need to find more impact players without clear avenues to do so.

Terrible news. One of the highlights of this year’s farm, Rio Foster, is in the hospital in critical condition due to a car crash. The driver was intoxicated.

Unfortunate echoes of Adenhart here.

It was nice to see Angels practicing “load management” (started by Popovich and San Antonio Spurs) by not allowing Hendricks to pitch the 7th, even though he only threw 84 pitches in 6 innings. Fermin relieved him, and promptly gave up game tying HR.

Apparently, Angels want to make sure Hendricks is fresh for the playoffs.

For today,
Rookie pitcher Barnett has not faced Angels.
For 2025, he’s 0-1, with ERA 11.25. He’s making his 2nd career start, and first start on the road.

Soriano has faced A’s 7 times, going 1-2.
For 2025, Soriano is 10-9, with 3.68 ERA

In August, Angels lost games against A’s two starting rookie pitchers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Angels hitters are flummoxed by Barnett today.

On an unrelated note:

Why did the Yankees challenge Houston Asstros center fielder Taylor Trammell’s bat, leading to it being looked at by umpires, and eventually confiscated, in the ninth inning last night? Perhaps the telltale clue is below:

Trammell played five games for the Yankees last season, and 106 with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.”

Inside knowledge?

Inquiring minds……

Man. I thought Tramell was gonna be good when he was drafted. Was stoked when the Reds got him as a prospect. Alas, it turns out top draft picks bust sometimes.

Funny that the Yanks had suspicions about the bat of a former player. I know guys that tried all kinds of stupid stuff on their bats-Sand papering, “Boning”……..

Dodger’s Emmet Sheehan pulls the old switcheroo to deprive a 28-year-old rookie of getting the ball back from his first major league hit.

What an ass. Dodgers pitcher accused of pulling shady move with opponent’s first career hit ball

Should the Angels resign Moncada for next year? For those who think that won’t move the needle any, consider that if he replaces Rengifo’s 57 starts at 3B you’d be replacing a 79 OPS+ hitter with a 114 OPS+ hitter. That’s a pretty significant improvement.

I hate to speculate on 3B next year because it is completely wide open and who knows what will be done. But right now Moncada’26 seems to be the most reasonable thing to do.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Born_in_59

Moncada + Peraza may work out OK. It’s a pretty big maybe between Yoan’s defense, Peraza being a very good MILB hitter, etc. But I wouldn’t be pissed about it. Who do they go get? Andujar? The idea of signing a guy like Bregman is strait up stupid. Also fun, while we may all roll our eyes, if he is “healthy” they are gonna let Rendon take a run at 3B in all likelihood.

My preferred move is to try to sign Munetaka Murakami. He’s 25, so around the same age as Neto, Adell etc. I’d sacrifice the money we’d spend on a semi-good CF and just get Garrett Hampson or something till Rada is ready and spend that cash on importing a 3B.

CAoldskoll

I wish Murakami to Halos. But there is already a secret handshake with the Dodgers and recruiter Ohtani. If any other team wants a player from Japan they will only get the Dodgers sloppy seconds; guys they don’t want.

If the Dodgers do decline Muncy’s option, I hope Perry is ready to make a call. Yes, Muncy will be 35 next year but he still hits and fields well.

Yup. Sign Muncy for a 2 or 3 years and the FOR THE LOVE OF GOD draft the best two 3B prospects available with your first two picks of the draft. That’d be fine with me. I would like Max Muncy if he’d just stop dressing like a whore.

Munetaka scares me.
His power is nice, but his K rate is is 10% higher than MLB average in a league that typically has a K rate 5% lower than MLB

If he’s striking out that much against NPB competition, I can’t imagine those numbers in the MLB

gitchogritchoffmypettis

He’s still the best option other than developing our own guy over the next few years….

He might be, it’s just not a slam dunk for what he potentially is going to get paid.
His career slash line is worse than Yoshida’s and his contract doesn’t look good after just a couple of years (granted Yoshida struck out farrrr less and has less power)
30%+ k rate in the NPB is really bad (and idk if he’s really a third baseman)

the reason Rengifo has had to start that much at third is because Moncada is hurt all the time……. so you’re not replacing rengifo with Moncada in that situation

Health willing, I’m okay with Washington back in the dugout next season. I haven’t thought about Skip Schumacher to be honest. I know in his first year that the Marlins improved enough to make the playoffs and then followed that with a season with one more loss than the Angels had last year. Maybe he could get Soler inspired enough to hit another 36 homeruns.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

But he uses bad players from a bad roster. And remember he wouldn’t start Paris for the first couple games? Clearly he is an ultra maroon.

I wonder whether Washington would settle for a reduced role though. Maybe if they set up that fielding area Gitch suggested in Palm Springs, he’d go for it.

He’s not gonna be around for long. I doubt they extend him. This is why I don’t mind keeping him next year. The players seem to take to him well, he is an encyclopedia of experience and know how. He has younger coaches around him. I’m fine with letting him run another year while we reload again.

I wish we had a really good MiLB manager. This would be the perfect situation to let Wash run out, hire him as a consultant type guy, keep Enright and who ever else is good in place, then promote a manager who is already part of “the system” and has worked with the home grown guys before.

Wash for next year is the right move. Great feel good/marketing choice and popular clubhouse move. Plan a transition to one of the coaches for ’27. My choice would probably be Bo Porter.

Washington has no grit, no stubble, and no fire. If someone like manly man Erstad was the manager, the Angels would be undefeated due to Erstad scaring all opponents into forfeting instead of having to face his gritty, stubbly manliness. Oh, and millionaire players who get paid either way would all line up to be crushed by his manliness and dirty uniform grit.

Manager – I think it will be Wash. It has to be. A guy like that, the best thing for him is to manage. To keep my sanity I will ignore three names on the list. Before Wash said he wanted to come back, I advocated for Boone as I think he will be available. Will Arte sign him though? eh, probably not but it’s out there.

another name and it’s crazy of course if he were to get cut loose but would be an instant Yes: Lovullo. Some grumpy people in the desert blame the manager believe or not. I’m very skeptical the Dbacks would not bring him back.

I’d jump at Lovullo. He’s very good and deserves the chance to come here and get called stupid by a bunch of aged mouth breathers. I’m not sure if he speaks truth to power or wears silly blazers to show he either thinks outside the box a lot or just like Doug Stanhope. If he does, give the man a mohawk and let’s ride.

Mike Hazen’s not cutting that guy loose.

With a little over three weeks of play left I got to thinking what was the best Angels Surprise for me. So here are a few choices for #1.

The great season put up by Taylor Ward, along with this season is the realizing that it was one of the top seasons for a LF’er in the club’s history for someone not named Garrett Anderson.
or
Jo Adell also is really coming into his own and gives us hope for the future playing RF.
or Soriano giving us a lot of good games from the pitcher’s mound.
or
The team’s W/L record. We all know that we didn’t reach the playoffs or even hit .500, but we here at CtPG got to have the most fun time as we’ve had in many years. It sure didn’t erase the sting of losing again, but it brought out a lot of posting by a whole heck of a lot of folks that are new, or we haven’t heard from in a while along with the rest of us.

Some positive things happened to Schanny and Neato along the way as their games are improving. Kenley Jansen was steady, and maybe we will have an even better ’26 season with some good surprises too. Have a great weekend and Go Angels and maybe we can see Trouty hit #399 & 400.

Don’t forget about Detmers’ job in the bullpen this year. If the team didn’t need starters so desperately, I’d say we have a closer for the next 5 years.
