LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Negative

Apparently, it could still go either way about whether the Angels will buy or sell at the trade deadline. Fortunately, the X-Rays were negative about Nolan Schanuel’s wrist. It was a rough weekend for first basemen. Freddie Freeman also got hit on the wrist by a pitch. His X-Rays also came back negative.

Now they say there is no timeline for Mike Trout to return to playing in right field. Ben Clemens at Fangraphs has Zach Neto ranked at number 43 in his 2025 trade values. He admits most of the people he talked to rank Neto higher than that. Let’s face it, Neto is unlikely to be traded anyway. Jose Soriano got lumped into the controllable pitching group in the honorable mentions.

Christian Moore (MLB No. 48) is the Angels second half prospect to watch, notwithstanding that he is on the injured list.

The Braves just designated outfielder Stuart Fairchild for assignment to make room for Sandy Leon. Rich Hill made it back to the majors for his 21st season. The Royals selected his contract. Richard Lovelady is outrighted down to the minor leagues unless he opts for free agency.

The Mets just claimed right-hander Rico Garcia off waivers from the Yankees. The Mariners selected the contract of left-hander Brandyn Garcia. The Rangers put Chris Martin on the 15 day IL with a calf strain. The Orioles just signed right-hander Vinny Nitoli to a minor league contract.

Watch McKenzie Clark of the AUSL Blaze go flying to rob Sahvanna Jaquish of the Talons out in right field. Those games look like a lot of fun.

Basically the same lineup as yesterday save for Soler vs. Wade Jr.

It’s difficult to like our chances with Hendricks but, stranger things have happened.

Ooof. A brutal loss yesterday
(same as the brutal 11-9 loss to Boston: Angels scored 4 runs in 1st; Soriano gave up 5 in bottom of 1st; Angels score 3 in top of 2nd. Soriano gave up 7 runs in 3-2/3 innings).

For today’s game:
Montas has faced Angels 17 times, going 4-3, with 2.57 ERA and 85 Ks
For the season, he’s 2-1, 5.03 ERA. He just recently returned after rehabbing a strain of his right latissimus dorsi muscle for most of 1st half of season.

Hendricks has faced Mets 7 times, going 4-1, 2.75 ERA, 37 Ks
For the season,he’s 5-6, 4.88 ERA.

Jorge Soler is in the lineup today.

Com’ on Angels. Let’s get a victory!!

Daily reminder to executives: SELL.
Yes, if anyone is interested in O’Hoppe, trade him.

A catcher’s first duty is catching. You do not learn how to do this in MLB (otherwise, you end up losing games – recall Matt Thaiss and his catcher’s interference x 2 in losses to Red Sox).

You learn how to catch in high school / college / in the independent leagues.
A good catcher (Bob Boone, Martin Maldinaldo, Benji Molina) who can hit (a la Ivan Rodgriguez, Carlton Fisk, Johnny Bench, Joe Mauer) goes into the Hall of Fame.

O’Hoppe’s catching deficiencies cannot be tolerated just because he’s a decent hitter (which aren’t close to Hall of Fame level).

I agree, and I like him a lot both as a person and a player. The problem is that he’s not a good enough hitter to justify the poor defense. He’s 10% below average and he’s 25 and heading for his prime. So he’s an offensive liability as well. If he was 20% better than average as a hitter it would be worth it. Plus he’s headed for arbitration next year.

Re: the pivotal play at the plate yesterday, was that not a horrid throw by Moncada? Even if Logan makes the catch, I seriously doubt that he would be able to turn & tag in time. That’s what I saw at least.

Yes, I know that Logan has accepted full responsibility.

Speaking of off topic stupid and ignorant gall, did the WNBA become profitable now that Ms Clark is there? Did I just miss it? My assumption is that as soon as the WNBA actually turns a profit we will all hear about it like they just won WWII, but if they did I missed it.

It’s likely that I just don’t understand how the WNBA works and that they actually do make money, right?

Otherwise, what are the players asking for? A bigger welfare check from the NBA? Just a big chunk of the one time cash coming in from expansion teams that have yet to earn a dime? Both? I know they got a new TV deal….

I listen to the radio at work. I know they are desperately trying to act like the world is interested in the WNBA and it’s right up there with “sports”. Is it working? Or are they just giving me scores, stories and highlights that everyone else also ignores?

Anybody suddenly into the WNBA lately? I actually don’t know.

Yeah. It sucks. But as a fan of off road rally racing, drag races, and F! a little, I think NASCAR is very boring and kinda lame. But I understand that plenty of people love it and it makes money. That’s cool.

So I thought maybe the WNBA had gotten to a point where only getting 9.3% of the leagues money in salary is a crime and I just don’t realize it. But apparently not. All the noise is people being obligated to talk about it and it’s still just the NBA with less good basketball and no profits.

It is a rich guy tax write off. Actually, a lot of rich guys.

The WNBA is a goodwill gesture and has gradually increased the talent pool of women’s basketball to the point casual sports fans can name a player or two.

Getting to this point has meant lots of rich guys wrote off the equivalent of pocket change on commercial flights and decent but not great hotels. I’ve stayed in the Sheraton Grand in Sacramento when the Phoenix Mercury were there, for example.

Perhaps one day it will break even and be considered a success. But for now it partially fills empty arenas during the NBA break and gives cheap programming for ESPN.

Make it happen. This unfair treatment of women must end now. Equal pay for equal work. No more glass ceilings and patriarchal tyranny !!!!

Question asked: “….what are the players asking for?….”
Question answer: “.. A bigger welfare check from the NBA..”

I started to watch WNBA when Caitlin Clark got there.
Then, I saw how a lot of the other players were purposely using her as a punching bag, and the league did nothing about it. So, I stopped.

And, for anyone who thinks WNBA players should be paid more – just watch clips of Angel Reese on offense. That’s some elementary school abilities that she has.

It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds: who’s going to finance the WNBA so that their players start making $1M average annual salaries, while the superstars make $25M/yr.

I’ve been a fan my whole life, and much more nowadays as their talent pool has expanded (more than just Clark).

It’s an investment on women’s sports. In corporate terms, the league is still in its growth phase. Saying they should have to pay to play is some anti-suffragism line of thinking.

You support women’s sports or you don’t. There’s really no point to debate this.

I’m all for the WNBA existing, even if I’m not interested. I was just curious because I just heard a bunch of people talk about how screwed the players are with their small piece of the pie. I wasn’t aware there was pie.

That is, like you said, they are a start up. All be it a 30 year old start up. I work for a start up that isn’t always profitable. I make less money because of it. So I get that.

Support the WNBA. Or women’s rodeo. Or swim meets. Or the World Jai Ali League. Or the XFL. What ever people enjoy playing and watching, no skin off my nose.

But PAYING, and getting angry about pay…. that’s not being a fan. I can tell that I am supposed to be mad that these ladies aren’t getting a bigger cut of something. So am I being manipulated or is there a pile o’gold that the workers aren’t getting much of?

It sounds like there is no pile of gold. Sounds like, if I want to play in a hardcore band, I need to accept that I will make less money than Pink. And if the WNBA wants to play basketball that fewer people enjoy watching. Welp, they also get less to do what they want to do. And that’s fine. Go play basketball ladies.

That didn’t read like the WNBA is really making much money. It sounded like they get a bunch of handouts from the NBA and companies like Google’s goodwill division, then got dragged along by the NBA into a TV deal that it doesn’t sound like the networks wanted, but now they HAVE TO push the WNBA to make money. And they still have to squabble over 50M and where it came from…. which handout it came from.

There’s just a lot of bullshit surrounding this it seems like. It actually sounds like they survive, basically, via your “it’s women, so give to it” plan. But whatever. It’s not my money and people can give it to what ever floats their boat. No one’s forcing anyone to do any of this, or forcing me to care, so game on people. And if they want to pay the players more, good for them I guess. If they don’t I don’t care either.

The original question was about raises for WNBA players in a business that losses money year-over-year while it’s financed by others.

Just because they don’t deserve equal pay to the NBA players doesn’t mean that one isn’t supportive of women’s sports. S-T-R-A-W-M-A-N

If & when the WNBA becomes popular/profitable, the players will certainly realize pay increases.

There’s no point debating this? That’s the bargain? We have to either support subsidizing a pro league that many/most of us find unwatchable (and that blatantly stokes racial friction as a surrogate for, you know, slam dunks and competent ballhandling) or we can’t support or like any women’s sports at all? That’s a freakin’ Manichean attitude and is the problem with so much in our culture.

I’m not looking to get people pissed off about this. I was just curious if they had gotten a huge bump and made a profit since Clark came in. I am mostly curious about this stuff because of MiLB teams. A lot of the A ball level teams also don’t make money or pay well…. maybe if they find a non-handout way to keep the WNBA going they can keep the Cal League strong…. but nope. It’s a handout.

My top trade list

Moncada
Soler
Stephenson (Dodgers?)
Rengifo

Keep unless they want to be traded to avoid sourpuss veterans however unlike what they reach the young guys

Kenley
Hendricks
D’Arnoud

Trade if there is a big opportunity otherwise keep to finish out the season because we have no replacement

Anderson
Ward

Roll with the following

O’Hoppe, Wallach Schanuel, Wade (ugh), Taylor, Neto, Newman , Moore (when he comes back), Adell, Trout, and probably Ward.

It is a must to get a young 3B return in those trades, they have enough pitchers in MILB to stretch it out the season.

Who would touch the Soler & Stephenson contracts and have a reasonable expectation of keeping their jobs? Soler has been bad this year and Stephenson can’t stay healthy.

Soler would have to get Chernobyl hot over the next few weeks to have any hope of getting moved and that seems remote at best.

I’m enjoying this year tremendously. The win total is far above expectations and that’s because the young guys are carrying this team and looking like an emerging core.

Most rebuilding teams have a year like this before they are really ready. I’m just surprised it is happening this year.

But we aren’t remotely close to ready to compete for anything real so continue the rebuild and sell for AA and AAA talent.

Yep. I’m stoked. We are having the year I was hoping for next year this year. And it’s really without any of the really young kids from the farm doing anything.

Even with the bleak first half results from a lot of our farm hands, I gotta figure a couple of them will figure things out by next year, which will only add to the richness….

I was expecting longer misery than this. So it’s a solid season to me…

Just can’t restate this too many times though: this team has been ridiculously fortunate on the injury front.

In a way that just really isn’t replicable or sustainable.

I just don’t think the current W-L record is reflective of true talent level, because the true talent level (on a team basis) is measured by the depth chart. If the Angels were the average MLB team this year, they would have had many more IL stints from rotation and the regular lineup.

The fact that 60% of the Angels SPs are in their mid-30s and haven’t been injured all season reflects that luck. The fact that they’re only now looking for a sixth starter to replace Silent-C and can’t come up with a clear and obvious substitute reflects the real downside of zero depth.

Someone. Please. Bring Dick Lovelady back to the MLB. Rockies? Where you at?

The Mets are shopping the type of MLB roster fodder we may be able to pick up in trade. It will likely be guys who have “failed” thus far…. other team’s Adells. But these are guys with some ability that may take off. Brett Baty at 3B wouldn’t actually be too bad a pick up if you look at his MiLB numbers and slow climb to meh at the MLB level. Ronny Mauricio could be Rengifo with better defense if he breaks right. Probably even has more natural power with fewer steroids and pregnant wives abandoned.

We will likely need to grab and “polish” at least one guy like this if we are gonna become a stacked roster. If we got Baty in a trade for Jansen, for example, I’d like the gamble.

The league’s actually got a lot of guys like these. They are exactly who true “win now” teams are willing to part ways with to get immediate help. One disadvantage being that a lot of these guys don’t have a lot of option years left if any because of their up/down career path and they are all one or two seasons from Arbitration.

But this is how you get your Brent Rooker type guys. And it’s a different tack from picking up AA prospects that are still highly valued. This may be a preferable rout if you are really afraid the Angels will never be able to develop a 22 year old hitter in our system. Otto Kemp is another guy I think Jeff brought up yesterday. He’d fit this mold. Jace Jung is the 2024 Tigers version of CMo. “He’s hitting .250 in AAA, let’s bring him up!”. He’s still young and I doubt Detroit’s done with him, but he is blocked by two guys at 3B and not having a great year in Toledo. Maybe they’d pass him along to get their roster deep for the post season? Curtis Mead from the Rays. Mikey Romero is pretty blocked in Boston. Maybe make him an OF? Kevin Alcantara is probably too rich of an ask from the Cubs, even if he is blocked by PCA and Owen Cassie and Ian Happ but a man can dream. Other teams will likely target him with better trade options. But Ben Cowles is 25 years old and blocked. James Triantos could convert to OF and be pesky. Christian Franklin is Lugo with more athletic ability. He’s 25 and buried with the Cubs too.

I like the idea of trading for Kemp, but I don’t think the Phillies will let him go while Bohm is out. Jung or Mead seems to me as good picks to take a chance on.

As Turk’s points out, the Cubs have lots of OF talent in AAA.

Philly has Justin Crawford (son of Carl) in AAA and he really looks like a stud.

Also, consider we could trade Ward for a third baseman to fill another need. The free agent list for next year is pretty weak, though, so that is a concern.

Ward pus Moncada for Crawford in Otto Kemp is a slight win for the Angels in the simulator.

Kemp has 0 value so he’s more of a throw in, but one we could use. He’d get the rest of the year to see if he’s a useful MLB piece full time while the Angels keep Crawford in AAA to squeeze an extra year of control out of him.

Yet I’m still wasting my time arguing with beat writers on X that:

Robust depth chart > Ward

“But if you trade Ward, non-Ward might fail!”

Sigh.

That’s why you invest in 2-4 non-Wards, not a single replacement. Turn Ward into 2-3 league minimum guys and reallocate that $12M to a free agent who might deliver equivalent value.

“But even if you trade one egg for five, all five might crack!”

Sigh.

TA ranks us as 3rd luckiest team in MLB 1st Half:
3. Los Angeles Angels, +5.5 winsLuck ranks: Close games 1st | Offense 9th | Defense 21st
At 47-49 heading into the ASG break, the Halos found themselves sitting surprisingly close to .500 — a level they haven’t reached over a full season in a whole decade (since 2015). Some of that, however, was driven by a huge disparity between their record in one-run games (18-11, fourth best in MLB) and multi-run contests (29-38, seventh worst). Sometimes, massive splits like these can be partly explained by elite relief pitching — but that’s not the case for the Angels’ bullpen, which ranked 28th in WAR, with closer Kenley Jansen and his setup men rating as average at best by ERA and/or FIP. Another aspect of L.A.’s good fortune was an offense that ranked 19th in scoring despite sitting slightly below that in wRC+ (21st) and hitting WAR (22nd). Although the Angels lost some ground in luck on the other side of the ball, allowing 8.6 more runs than BaseRuns would predict, the net effect was a team that exceeded its expected wins overall.

Just saw this – jinx. I was arguing the same upthread, where I was about to write “the team is two games under .500, but the depth chart suggests to me it should be more like 8 games behind with average luck.”

This does a better job of quantifying my gut – +5.5 winsLuck describes almost exactly the same thing.

They also root in on the key point in Mr Frost and my debate on win expectancy by focusing on the bullpen. If the Angels were succeeding in one-run contests due to skill over luck, it would be reflected in much more robust bullpen metrics, but the Angels bullpen is quite poor in aggregate.

It’s also why I can’t sweat decisions like bringing TA out for the sixth or seventh inning. The Angels bullpen is just as volatile as late innings TA, and Detmers (one of the good ones!) contributed just as much to yesterday’s loss as seventh-inning Anderson. It’s just isn’t very deep or stable, the Angels stopper force.

Also, 3 of our 5 starting pitchers are in their mid 30s and one of the one’s who is not is 30% below average. We also have a number of players having career years.

But the players having career years are young. We don’t know if this is the level of play of Adell, Neto, and Schanuel or their peaks.

I’m not rooting for losses either, but it’s clear the team is not just at that level yet where they can sustainably compete.

The BP, after being steady for a couple of months, have floundered, squandered a chance at a Philly sweep, and gave away what would have been a signal-sending win to the Mets.

The SP looks shaky with Anderson, Jack in the minors and no plan to replace him yet, Kikuchi being inefficient (while good) and Soriano being inconsistent (who knows if the team gets good or bad Sori that day). And Kendricks is Kendricks

The offense has been better , and with better pitching, (not even shutout pitching), five runs should have been enough to win the game last night.

But it’s clear this team is just not there yet.

Montgomery gave away that game last night when he sent Anderson back out for the 7th. Then he compounded his mistake by bringing Detmers in in the no out two runners situation. Brogdon or Burke would have been a better choice. Ray-Ray continues to show no feel for pitching changes.

You know it’s not the manager but the roster when you make statements like “Brogdon or Burke would have been better.”. You know who doesn’t say that? Fans of teams with a solid roster.

Monty is meh to meh+. But he’s not the problem. Neither was Wash and his hated coaches.

Just gotta keep building. Keep kissing frogs till we find a couple princes. Keep hoping Detmers and Bachman types learn and develop. Lot’s of suck comes along with this.

No one is rooting for loses. The season thus far has been conjured with “smoke and mirrors”. We all want the team to add talent that will break the cycle of the past 11 seasons.

The only reason to root for losses is that we may see the need to sell, the Punk Rock Platypus may see the need to sell. My co-worker Andrew can see it. But my mom can’t, she’s all in. And I think Arte is more inclined to listen to my mom. He loves moms. And if he says we are AL IN then that’s what we are….

I’m sure my online persona reads like an insane toxic optimistic fan lol, but I pride myself on being a knower of ball.

The next 9 games are tough. I want us to go 9-0. If we are .500 or better by the deadline, you know we are buying.

It’s a quandary for me.

Part of me also wants to watch August and September baseball with the Angels on the periphery of the playoff hunt. It would be more exciting as a fan and I’d like to see how Neto and Co. perform as the stakes get higher.

But my brain says the best thing to do is get Neto and Co some badly needed help so they can make a more serious run or three down the road.

When I think of us going 9 and 0 it makes me think of Borodino. “we kicked the crap out of the Russian army! Now let’s chase them seven hundred miles into the teeth of winter!”

If we do, get ready to eat your shoes Go For It Guys.

LOL wow, how the F is this team nearly .500?

I am actually a bit surprised by the wRC+ number. Taylor Ward is one game away from getting his OPS back above .800 (it hit .799 at one point last night). When that happens, we will have FIVE starters with an OPS north of .800, which sounds really good to me.

Look at our line ups the last week of last season. You will feel good.

Bollinger’s article on the trade deadline can be summarized to the following:

– “We gotta play ’em one day at a time.”
– “I’m just happy to be here. Hope I can help the ball club.”
– “I just wanna give it my best shot and, the good Lord willing, things will work out.”

The translation is that Perry will wake up around 5:30pm eastern on July 31st, look at the standings, and decide whether or not to turn on his cell phone.

I just don’t see Perry being a forward thinking guy.

That must be why he drafted a bunch of high school pitchers that he’d already made arrangements to sign a few days ago. A lack of thinking ahead. I may not love the forward thinking, but it’s there.

I was referring to the current roster and the next 2 years from a position player perspective.
