LA Angels Monday News Crash: Tightness

Jorge Soler is day to day with his groin tightness. The Angels acquired LaMonte Wade Jr. from the Giants for cash or a player to be named later. This is apparently a backup plan in case neither Trout nor Soler can play the outfield. They DFAd Michael Darrell-Hicks. The Angels also signed Ben Gamel to a minor league deal. Robert Stephenson has a tricky nerve injury characterized as a stretched nerve. There is no telling when he will be able to pitch again. News flash: Ron Washington wants his players to play baseball. No Ron. I don’t think “expertisely” is a word.

The injury that happened to Julio Rodriguez in Saturday’s game does not seem to have broken anything.

The Astros just designated right-hander Forrest Whitley for assignment. The Phillies just claimed right-hander Ryan Cusick off waivers from the White Sox. The Brewers just claimed outfielder Drew Avans. The White Sox signed Tyler Anderson to a major league contract. No. I guess it is a different Tyler Anderson. Our Tyler Anderson pitched yesterday after this deal was announced. Tyler, Taylor, Toyler, whatever. Can he pitch?

The Orioles designated right-hander Matt Bowman for assignment. The Diamondbacks designated Aramis Garcia for assignment. The Reds traded catcher Austin Wynn to the Athletics. The Yankees claimed CJ Alexander off waivers from the A’s.

Just want to say thanks to this community. Lots going on right now. Personal life, on the news, business wise.

It is great to jump in here and just talk baseball for a little bit. We’re blessed to be able to tune out life and enjoy a game and each other.

What’s more, Fermin has looked very good of late. Hasn’t given up an earned run in his past six outings, was hitting high 90s with ease against Seattle, and struck out 5 in 2.1 innings over his last two appearances.

What didn’t Perry like?

Maybe this is one of these one day deals where We need a fresh body for tonight . They can dfa the latest Anderson when they activate Wade Jr tomorrow and then bring back Fermin ( who may have never left) when Soler goes on the IL tomorrow. Of course that would open up another 40 man spot so…

Who knows?

So just as I predicted a month ago, the All-Star selection for AL SS will be between three players I mentioned, none of which is Zach Neto and the most likely player to represent the club is thought to be Logan O’Hoppe.

Not sure who you mentioned but was it Witt Jr, Pena and Wilson? I really like Jacob Wilson but Witt Jr. will likely get the starting nod? Pena is very deserving too. Neto is the best player on the Angel team but these three players have better stats.

Yes, and I agree with you about Neto and the fact that the other 3 have superior numbers. He’s still an All-Star level player that currently has a number of really good players.

O’Hoppe has actually be a disappointment so far. He’s terrible defensively and he’s currently only at a 108 OPS+ which is decent for a catcher, but not the 115 to 120 you’re hoping for.

So even though the Angels should have won the game yesterday, it doesn’t feel as disappointing? So far, they have swept the As, and didn’t look totally outclassed by Seattle. They are probably still way below the trashcans, but it looks like they may be even w/ TX.

If they keep hovering at this record, and Mike stays healthy, it’s a huge improvement from prior seasons.

Well, that’s because they are not a good team yet. If they won more “should have won” games they would be a good team. Then we’d be able to go back to being incensed by “things that a contending team like the Angels CAN’T DO!” or “Mistakes that CHAMPIONS don’t make!” etc. Plus whining about grit and fire and commitment to championshits.

Can’t wait.

Everyone knew Wash should have played Paris earlier. The fans were chanting his name and Wash still wouldn’t play him. Wash seen him as an OFer that only got in games late. Because despite the gnashing of teeth here at CtPG, young Kyren failed to appear in only 3 of the team’s first 41 games. Thats far from rotting on the pine . In fact you can make a case that Wash handled him better when he limited his playing time so that he would not get exposed by opposing pitchers.

We might need to save 1st base for O’Hoppe! Just checked Baseball Savant and he has a -6 Fielding Run Value… yikes.

At this point it looks like our best hope is that O’Hoppe becomes just a “minus defender” instead of a “horrendous defender”. Or move him to 1st. Who knows, maybe he can become an 800 to 850 OPS hitter if he’s not working so much behind the plate.

Then we can put Trout at catcher. That should save his knees.

For those wondering, -6 Fielding Run Value places O’Hoppe at second to last place among 41 qualified catchers…

AnAngelsFan

He was only -2 last year (39/65), but he was -7 in ’23 (64/71).

Let’s hope a lot of his negative framing stats is due to bad umpires. Once robots are introduced, that portion will disappear anyway. His throwing + blocking shouldn’t be much worse than average, and FRV doesn’t include pitch selection and pitcher therapy.

Per Statcast his throwing is only a -1, but his blocking is -6. Hopefully that comes back up a little bit. His pitch framing suckage should go away as you say once robo umps come in.

Too bad we just found out that he also gives away pitches! I wonder what score he would get on that aspect of catching…

AnAngelsFan

I’m seeing throwing -1, blocking -2, and framing -4 for overall -6.

Last year his blocking and throwing were both “0”, so hopefully this is a down year on the blocking and will improve.

He’s had some pretty BAD errors…. even like 3 in one game. Granted, those errors are likely lowering his stats a bit. But he has been genuinely bad… not like “maybe it’s framing” bad. He can get better though.

I kinda don’t want to mess with Nolan. At least right now. In a couple years? Maybe. Also, while he is The Flash…. can he run down anything in the outfield? Plus, RF? He’d need an arm right? Could eventually do an OF of Nolan/Rada/Adell if Jo develops after ten years….

Nolan is currently sitting at a 119 OPS+ which is essentially 20% better than average as a hitter. He is the least of our problems, if he’s even a problem. He’s barely mobile enough to play 1B, there isn’t anywhere else he could play.

Yeah, Nolan as an OF admits defense does not matter. He’s pigeonholed as our 1st baseman for the foreseeable future. Kind of a bummer to see Nick Kurtz come to town and likely leave with higher run producing numbers with much less official ABs

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  FungoAle

Here’s the thing with Nolan. I’ve watched/listened to about 12 other broadcast teams talk about Nolan. They all love him a lot more than we do. His approach. His bat control. His contact rate.

We used to (or at least I used to) pine for a guy who JUST GETS ON so that every Trout or Ohtani HR wasn’t a solo shot. So that when a guy walks there is a guy that moves him over. Or gets a hit. So that SOMEONE on this team sees more than 5 pitches in an at bat.

We are starting to have that now. And most people with a low piss diet seem pretty into it. Right now, Nolan is better than Kurtz. Will that continue forever? I doubt it cause Kurtz has ungodly power. But I’m also not gonna work hard at hating a guy who improves up to an .800 OPS that isn’t 2/3 solo home runs along with a 30% K rate.

If Nolan gets those HRs up to say 15 I’ll be stoked. If he hits .300 I’ll be stoked. If he gets that many hits he’ll almost certainly push 50 doubles at least. That’s fine with me. It seems fine with a lot of baseball type guys.

I’m talking in general. Though, if he finishes this year with say 40 doubles and 12 HR I’d be stoked, yeah. He’d have to hit pretty dang consistently for that to happen.

But don’t worry. we’d still be able to bitch about how few RBIs and steals he has.

MAn. He looks GOOD. It’s what I had hoped would happen. He is still gonna K plenty, I get that. But he was looking good on off speed pitches, his old issue, and was not hitting fastballs for some reason. He adjusted to that. Now he’s making enough contact that his sweet sweet power and bat speed matter for something.

So hopefully he isn’t hiding some other major issue that every pitcher in the league can exploit for a long period and he becomes a high .700 or even .800 OPS guy.

Mr. Teeth is on it. BA now mocks us to Kade the Tiger.
(Ethan to the Nats)

BA: Anderson has more momentum than any college arm in the class and increasingly is being talked about as the top college pitcher. He had two extremely loud starts against Texas A&M and Dallas Baptist before his less impressive start against West Virginia in the super regionals. Anderson is getting Max Fried comps as a lanky lefty with a clean delivery, command and great feel to spin the ball.
Liam Doyle has been linked to the Angels as much as anyone and should also be in the mix here, as should Jamie Arnold and Kyson Witherspoon. The industry continues to think it’s going to be a college player here given their track record. If the team is looking for a deal—which sounds like it could be the case—UC Santa Barbara righthander Tyler Bremner isn’t all that different from the other pitchers mentioned, but has more risk to slip into the teens.

Let it be so.

After yesterday’s implosion, I’m even more nervous about the sustainability of Doyle’s approach in the pros. I’d be fine with any of Anderson, Arnold or Witherspoon – whomever accepts the leanest bonus, as they probably all have equivalent chances at success at the next level.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yup. Hernandez would be my favorite, but if they take any of those three I’d be equally happy. Then I’d focus on position player prospects for like three picks. Best ratio of making contact and having power that we can get. One of those guys will likely look like Matt Thaiss, but that’s OK. I forget how huge a hitter Matty was at VA.

Turk's Teeth
Editor
Super Member

Though, even then, it was largely doubles power with Thaiss at VA. Good plate discipline and some of the better contact in the draft, but not the raw power of an Ike Irish or Andrew Fischer. That was something they were projecting on that didn’t materialize.

But yeah – in this draft, Seth first (though unlikely), then I’d be accepting of any of the three non-Doyle college arms, or the two top bats in Holliday or Arquette, even though I think it’s not the best system for Holliday to reach his ceiling, and I’m 50/50 on whether Arquette gets to the game power that would make him a good fit at the hot corner).

the very first pick in any draft is not a guarantee. Every once in awhile there’s a Ken Griffey Jr. Sometimes it’s a Ben McDonald or Mickey Moniak. Justin Upton, Chipper Jones, Delmon Young.

Maybe we’ll get a #2 pick like Reggie Jackson (1966) or Verlander (2004). Or maybe it’ll be like picking Darren Dreifort (1993) after A-Rod is gone. Or worse, Paul Shuey, #2 after Phil Nevin (1992) while Jeter goes at #6.

The point being, it’s up to scouting to identify the best players and in any year it’s clear the organizations are guessing.

Cowboy26

Yes but the overall talent level was soooo much higher in last years draft the probability of “failure was much lower as well. It seems like we will be reaching with the no. 2 pick way more this year than in last years draft.

I guess what I am saying is the odds are much higher this year we will draft a Brian Anderson than a Troy Glaus. Considering the high degree of confidence I have in this organization we maybe in deep shit trouble ( especially noting the highest we can draft next year no matter how tankish we want to be is10th )

Irony of course on the Glaus v Anderson comp is Glaus is the guy Law has compared Arquette most strongly to.

But the fact is that we just don’t know. The 2022 draft class was thought to be strong at top and deep, but early returns have been a little disappointing (outside Neto and Holliday). And some of the high ceiling prospects from last year have been showing mixed results. Little power from Condon, up and down performances from Bazzana and Wetherholt – the top 7 haven’t been invincible to date.

But I think we can say with some certainty that this is not 2023, where the Angels would be puzzling over Skenes, Crews or Langford right now.

I’m a little surprised that, on draft boards, Marek Houston is so far below a bunch of HS short stops. I mean, only Carlson is capable of his defensive upside. Houston already hits more advanced pitchers well. He lacks power, but that’s gonna be the case with several of these HS kids when they fail to develop pop. No reason Houston can’t eat some beef and lift some weights and become Dansby Swanson any more than the grade school kids.

Turk's Teeth

I think it’s just the power deficit, and the fact that Marek hit well on the Cape, but again, with no power at all. So WYSIWYG. But with the young SS types, there’s always chance the bat blooms.

Though I think Marek’s glove is special enough that he goes in the first half of the first round, and maybe as high as 8-12.

Hernandez is solid, large ceiling than the college arms but of course we don’t do high schoolers. Maybe, since it is industry wide philosophy to stay away from high school right handers in the top 10, Perry will flip the script to just stand out amongst his peers.

But he has fire and zazz Turks. We need a pitcher who has a childlike anger management system in place so he mirrors my emotions back to me from the screen I am watching. This is the key to success.

Jamie Arnold holds Oregon State to 1 run the day before Oregon State scores 14. Liam Doyle takes the loss, not getting out of the 4th inning, charged with 5 runs.

I think it will matter in the draft even though it’s just one game for each. Performing under pressure is a real thing

It was a good look for Arnold. Sorry that his season is done, as I think he’d have a couple more competitive performances in him in Omaha.

He’s really the only one of the four who didn’t struggle in their final game, though to be fair, Kade was excellent through five and then had to sit in the dugout for more than half an hour in 100+ heat and humidity before he got hit around a bit in the final two innings. Even the crowd looked gassed in the stands.

You can really say the same about Anderson. Both Kade and Kyson are cool customers on the mound, and both have 4-5 pitches at their disposal. And being younger, there’s more strength projection for both.

Arnold almost gets to their pitch diversity with a couple distinct shapes on the breaker, but it’s more of a classic FB-SL-CH package, with a cutter tipped in for zest.

Otoh, I do think you have to look at the fact that Arnold held the same Beavers team that put up 14 runs yesterday to one run into the seventh inning on Saturday. The two year track record is very, very good.

I think it’s more evidence that Trout is the de facto full-time DH and the team needs OF’s to fill the void. And of course injury concerns – if Ward and/or Adell were to go down, and Trout is the DH, who roams the OF? Reinforcements were needed.

Starting to think our “Abercrombie and Fitch Male Model” catcher still has a lot learn behind the plate. Blocking balls in the dirt better recently, but doesn’t seems to be getting better calling games. Not sure how long it takes for that skill set to show improvement.

He’s another 1B/DH candidate.

It can get better…. it’s weird he seems to have gotten worse with Travis around.

Let’s hope. It’s so much better for roster construction.

“My ex-team and I have a deal, I’ll help them out when I can, even if it means I don’t help the Angels. My Boss won’t know the difference, he’s too stupid. Oh, and there is my brother, I’ll help him out too even though the name Wade hasn’t worked out to well for me. Yep, I’ll fool everyone into thinking I know what I am doing.”.

Clearly you are onto nothing there.

ngl I like the Wade Jr pickup, and I might be huffing copium right now, but I think if we could get pitching without giving up much, there’s a chance still, the offense is there, and the rotation, albeit mediocre and not champion-worthy, it has a certain level of reliability, we just need a crap-ton of relievers and some better defense and plate discipline and we could easily slide past Tampa and Seattle into a wild card spot in the weak AL

Sure, all that could happen.
It’s also just as likely as a giant meteor hitting Earth.

I’m aggregating every last one of my Ippei and Shrute bucks and going all in on the meteor.

Wade’s just depth. Depth is fine.
