Angels Win 8-6

Silent C had a rough first inning tonight. J.P. Crawford was out to lead off the game. Kochanowicz then gave up a three run homer to Cal Raleigh before the Angels ever came up to bat. Randy Arozarena got a one out single and Rowdy Tellez grounded out by hitting one into the shin of the pitcher. The Angels got out of the inning down 3-0 but it was obviously less than ideal. The Angels failed to score, although Schanuel doubled.

In the second inning, J.P, Crawford made up for his leadoff out by singling to drive in Cole Young and make it 4-0 Mariners. Something happened to Jorge Soler and Chris Taylor replaced him. All he did was homer to make it 4-1 Seattle.

Jo Adell hit a two out homer to make it 4-2 Seattle.

Zach Neto singled and then Taylor Ward hit a ball right in front of Cal Raleigh that Rowdy Tellez failed to hang onto at first. 4-3. They gave the error to Cal Raleigh but a couple of innings later they changed it to E3.

Chris Taylor doubled and Taylor Ward scored. 4-4 tie.

Kochanowicz was in trouble again in the fourth inning, having men at first and third with one out. He got removed in the top of the fourth with 75 pitches and Connor Brogdon came in. I guess it wasn’t a quality start. The Angels got out of this situation without further scoring. In the bottom of the fourth inning Jo Adell hit his second homer of the game to make it 5-4 Angels.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Nolan Schanuel doubled and Mike Trout advanced him to third with a productive out. Taylor Ward doubled to make it 6-4 Angels.

Hector Neris came in to pitch the sixth inning. The Mariners promptly scored one to make it 6-5 Angels. Then the Angels brought in Brock Burke who was competent.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Luis Rengifo and Jo Adell both reached base and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Zach Neto singled. 7-5 Angels.

After Neto stole second, Mike Trout walked to load the bases for Taylor Ward. Ward lined out to end that frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, Jo Adell singled to drive in Chris Taylor. 8-5 Angels. Taylor had been hit by a pitch and Rengifo singled to advance him.

Kenley Jansen came in to pitch the top of the ninth inning with the Angels up 8-5. He coughed up a one out homer to Cal Raleigh to make it 8-6 Angels.

I didn’t like the way this game started out, but it was actually kind of pleasurable. The Angels won 8-6 and took the series. Mariners can’t sail away, though. We still have them tomorrow. Sweep?

Well if the Angels aren’t good enough to cheat, at least they are smart enough to uncover the cheating and expose it. Would love to this team to develop some True Grit with an F-U attitude. A good bench clearing brawl might do the kids some good☠️☠️

One of the other offensive impacts in the last few games has been Chris Taylor’s bat. Contrast his May and June slash lines. They tell you everything you need to know.

May: .142/.143/.214
June: .333/.444/..733

June represents only a small sample size and many of his May games were with the Dodgers. But if he is settling in with the Angels and can contribute anywhere close to his June production from here on out, he will be a true asset to the team especially since his defense is solid as well.

Most fun fact, and surprising to me at least, 15 comeback wins with 3 in the 9th inning.

I am saying cautiously that we have an emerging core of four young hitters: Neto, O’Hoppe, Schaneul, and Adell. Now who adds to that core over time? (Randa, Moore…).

I am less sure if we have a young pitching core emerging.

Adell needs to have a full season like the other three before I can add him to a core.

I am good with that and why I said “cautiously” and “emerging.” To be honest, I wrote Jo off after his start this year but he is back on my radar.

Honestly, I did too. I really admire how he has worked every off season to do something different to make himself a better player. He is easy to root for.

Nice win. The team took full advantage of the errors by Seattle while managing to earn 6 runs against a tough staff.

Let’s go for the sweep.

Very impressive game by the Angels today, considering Castillo dominates the Angels.

Sunday, Angels have a good chance to sweep.
In 8 games, Kirby is 4-4 against Angels, with 3.66 ERA and 48 Ks
He’s 0-3 this season, with 8.56 ERA.

Taylor is hot!
Hoping Washington keeps him in the lineup until he goes ice cold.

Trout now getting back to the Trout of the past several years – in the last 4 games, he’s 2-14 (0.143) with 3 Ks. At least he has 4 BBs.

I don’t know why Trout won’t hit the ball with any consistency to right field. He would when he first came up. Now he basically is a pull-first hitter. I will always root for him, but I don’t fully understand the concept.

He did make the effort last night. If you watch closely there were frequent cases where he attempted to do just that…he fouled a few of those swings off.

So, the attempt can be made and sometimes it doesn’t work out. Above all the pitchers don’t help you. The book on Trout right now is that you pitch him up and in and try to jam him with fastballs. It is not easy to hit an inside fastball to right field…

The thing about Trout – he’s clearly not the player he once was, but he’s enough of a threat that opponents take seriously. It’s important that he’s in the lineup because the options behind him are significantly less desirable

Agree. He is always pitched to carefully, and that takes mental energy out of the opposing pitcher… you know, people talk about the weak part of the order where a pitcher can “relax” a bit, they surely cannot relax when Mike is at the plate…

Jo Adell, last 30 games:
.265/.365/.627 (.992 OPS)

Last 15:
.313/.421/.729 (1.150 OPS)

Jo’s first pitch strike % is 71. I wonder what it is these last 30 games. Seems like a tough way to go to put yourself in the hole 3/4 of yours bats.

If he has turned the corner in his development, it’s a big win for the baseball operations staff. It would have been easy to kick Adell to the curb and relieve the pressure, but they stuck with him through very ugly results. Tip of the cap to them!

JackFrost

Again, I agree. It looks like the patience they have shown with Jo is beginning to pay off… all the early struggles with defense, all the K’s, etc. They have handled him with care and have even protected his psyche by batting him lower in the order and limiting the pressure on him to perform etc… They have been committed to him, and as you say have not given up on him, when surely over the years other teams asked for him in a trade package…

I am not typically in the place of praising this organization, but Perry and company have at least done something right in the way they have handled Adell…

Perry hasn’t done anything with Adell only rush him to the big leagues in 2020. As we now see, this is the Minasian book on player development.

Any minimal success from Adell is not attributable to the GM. Wash told him to ditch the leg kick. Not one of the 3 batting coaches. Was this the key to turn him into an above average player? I think more
ABs are needed.

Sure man. And I suppose Perry didn’t have anything to do with him still being on the roster.

Wait a minute.. of course he did ! He is the GM. As such he is answering calls from other teams about trades. The fact Adell was not already shipped out in a trade is certainly something Perry deserves credit for.

Adell was rushed to the big leagues in 2020 and that should have never happened but I think they wanted him to play and with the minor leagues shut down that is what they did.

His defense was horrendous and was his hitting but I have been impressed with how hard he has worked to improve his game.

Yeah, the Angels opted to give Adell the opportunity to learn under Trout firsthand rather than continue his development at the Arizona Fall League camp with no minor league season. Results were horrifying. I thought it was crazy to keep him out there.

Jo Adell last 117 games dating back to June 25th of last year :

407 Plate Appearances .230/.310/.438 K rate 27% so there been steady growth ( especially with the strikeouts) its just he once again got off to a horrendous start.

I’m actually more concerned with his defensive regression.

Oh no. We won again. Jo Adell and Chris Taylor are trying to fool me. So is the bullpen. It’s all part of Arte’s dimly lit scheme to make me enjoy myself every now and again so I slip and he escapes my constant derision for a few hours. What horrors could he commit in just those hours? YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW!

But have no fear. This real man of baseball is here. I only celebrate wins that lead to championships or my country taking over the Philippines. I stay hard like this all day every day. Arte knows we know he knows we know. You know?

Never heard of Nerve stretching…sounds like rest and smoke some cigarettes. Freak injuries are trAdition

Robert Stephenson underwent two MRI exams that revealed no structural damage to his right biceps but he’s dealing with a stretched nerve. Called it a freak injury and isn’t sure how long he’ll be out. The only treatment is rest, he said.

This makes delivering a timeline on King’s return to the Padres rotation a little more difficult. Padres manager Mike Shildt said it could be anywhere from “days” to “weeks” for King’s return.

The Good Sam

Sam Bachman strikes out the side to get the save for AAA Salt Lake.

7 sliders (88-90 mph), 98.6 mph sinker, 5 sliders (89-90 mph), 92.9 mph changeup, 90.7 mph slider to end it.

I like it …. I am thinking bring Bachman up to take Detmers’ place in late inning high leverage role, and move Reid to starting rotation to take over for either Hendricks or Silent C … Not sure which one, but would lean towards Hendricks just because of upside for Silent C …

Agree…Time for silent C to.take a plane trip to AA or AAA where ever they think is best for him… maybe who ever got him going at AA can get him back on track. Detmers might not be ready to go back into the rotation, but we’re getting three innings out of silence C, so it doesn’t really matter.

Yeah, it can be worked through; first game just ask Reid to give you three solid innings… next game four innings. Then five innings. It is not that hard, especially for a guy who is used to being a starter.

I agree with this move Frosty. Of course its a far cry coming in from the bullpen to face 3 batters versus the entire line up multiple times in a game but if Detmers can sustain his current attacking mentality hes got the stuff to be successful in the starting rotation. As to who’s spot he would take in the rotation, if the Angels really believe The professor is important to development of the other pitchers ( ie Soriano or the bullpen guys) then keep him in the rotation even though his starts will continue to be 5+ inning struggles. I believe Silent C should go back to the PCL band boxes and reestablish his sinker ( although its hard to do with the altitude issues) but hes giving up way too much hard contact and walking too many batters and needs to get back to being Mr Groundballer that made him so successful in a small sample size last year. For the Bullpen without Detmers That would leave us with:

Jansen
Zeferjahn
Fermin
Burke
Brogdon
Neris
Strickland
Bachman

I still think they need improvements even though The bullpen has been much much better in the last 2 to 3 weeks. Brogdon has been tremendous in his last 8 outings for us ( 0 runs .75 WHIP) .Young José Fermin was rolling before the injury but hopefully is healthy now. Burke was cruising in his last 7 games before he ran out of gas in Boston. Hunter Strickland (0 runs in his 2025 season appearances) has continued where he left off last year giving us game saving outings even in the middle innings against the tougher part of the lineups.

So that leaves Neris as the odd man out. I would like to see them pick up another high leverage reliever ( Craig Kimbrel anyone?)

But certainly not this guy:

https://www.mlb.com/player/kyle-tyler-667725. Who has been DFGa’d or released at least 10 times in the last 3 years

Kimbrel has had a nice career. I think he should end it now. Sucks that he was called up for one day by the Braves. He deserves better. But I don’t think he has anything left.
