LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Catch a Catcher

Hey! The Dodgers DFAd Austin Barnes. He is slightly worse than d’Arnaud by bWAR. Meanwhile, Matt Thaiss has over twice the bWAR that Logan O’Hoppe has for the season so far.

We won’t be seeing Ben Joyce any more this season. Let the kids convalesce. Sports Illustrated thinks Luis Rengifo has been benched because of brain farts and crappy offense.

The Pirates claimed infielder/outfielder Michael Helman off waivers from the Cardinals. The Astros designated pitcher Tayler Scott for assignment.

Akil Baddoo made it back up to the bigs and Jace Jung got optioned.

Cardinals pitching prospect Sem Robberse just had Tommy John surgery. The Mariners placed Bryce Miller on the IL with elbow issues and called up Jhonathan Diaz. Jose Quintana is on the injured list with left shoulder impingement.

A total of seventeen players have become eligible post mortem with that recent decision by Rob Manfred.

Okay, now it is time for the Halos to shock the baseball world and sign Trevor Bauer for league minimum.

Then, sign Julio Urias at the all-star break.

Then, re-sign Jose Suarez.

Then, contact Rich Hill too late

Then, contact 62 year-old Jamie Moyer and see if he’s been throwing the rock lately.

Then, pay someone to watch when Jesse Chavez gets DFA’ed for a day or two and snatch him up.

Lastly, contact that ShamWow guy he can pitch all day.

I’m as checked out as I have ever been on Angels baseball. The lack of give a shit on every front from them has completely worn me down. I was always the kid that you could poke in the chest fifty times, call me all kinds of names with no consequence and then they would say the one wrong thing and I’d lose my mind a start swinging. I don’t know why but the Joyce announcement after all the downplaying of his injury pushed me over the edge. This team sucks and I really wish I could hit the reset button on my allegiance.

Time to just enjoy baseball. Watch the Angels try and grow… fine, I am. But the AL Central? The NL West? There’s lots of fun shit going on out there. The Angels are my team, not my wife. I’m gonna watch the Tigers play the better AL Central teams. I’m gonna watch the Reds and the Snakes. Next week I go to two Cal League games and the Angels Sacramento game. I am actually more interested in the Cal League games…. Cause I like baseball.

Gonna check out some Kellon Lindsey, Eduardo Quintero, Joendry Vargas, Myles Naylor, Kash Mayfield, Cobb Hightower, Felnin Celestin…. prospects on small fields baby. Cheap hot dogs. Strange contests between innings. Maybe some wildlife on the field…. get mugged in Stockton….

Following the Angels minor league system is a dead end this year too. Yesterday’s organizational results are pretty normal.

Yesterday
AAA Salt Lake lost, 6-2
Single-A Inland Empire lost, 12-8
High-A Tri-City lost, 11-8
The ACL Angels lost, 10-2
Angels lost 5-1

outscored 43-21

—————-
AA won 9-0, they aren’t playing well most nights

That’s why I think change is needed, if for no other reason than to be able to lie to the customer base that things will be different. Perry has been here for 5 years and nothing is significantly different than when he arrived. The farm Sucks, the major league team is worse than it was and plays fundamentally poorly aside from just losing, Trout is washed up and has another 6 years left on his contract, Rendon has another year after this to get paid for not playing. It’s hard to see the light. Realistically, we’re 5 years away from winning even if we had smart people running the organization making good decisions, and we don’t. We’re not even one of the better teams that didn’t make the post season anymore, we’re one of the 3 worst.

Even with the juiced balls and short porch, it was an incredible experience, that season has to be up there with 61 and 60, but I still would have given the MVP to Ohtani because of pitching. 10 Wins beats 25 HR’s in my mind.

It’s sad — but who cares if Trout plays or not? It no longer matters. Beyond the meaningless HR with no one on base, what does he prospectively bring to the team? He’s a shell of what he was and can’t be depended on to remain on the field.

I just hate the annual obligatory, “This season Trout demands trade” drivel stories. No one would trade for Trout unless he went on an unfathomable wicked awesome tear for an extended period of time (Not holding breath) and the Halos ate a significant and painful amount of his salary.

JackFrost
Legend

I think he is still a very good baseball player if we consider things like his knowledge of the game and his ability to change a game with any single at bat — he actually did this in the Pirates game on April 24th when in the 4th inning with the Halos trailing 3-0 he fought back from being down in the count with an excellent AB… He lined a triple to right which ignited a three run inning and the Angels went on to win that game.

He was the main reason — I know cause I was there. That said, if he can’t stay on the field he won’t be able to do that. So, it is not that his talent suddenly disappeared. It is that the guy can’t stay healthy. It is that simple.

I am positive that Perry Minasian is in over his head as Eppler was. The Frustration felt by Jedi is now understood. He was about sell/trade to keep trying to excel. Angelz4ever

Now there’s one positive G-Pa.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I’ve never seen a modern GM get as much rope as Jedi while still handing in a bologna sandwich at the end of every season. Sure, the mustard on it gets better, but NINE YEARS. Look at us with Perry. He’s been here half the time, and half of that was working with Joe Maddon and The Unicorns. We’re already sick of him, though CtPG Guy was over him in December of 2020 because CtPG Guy is brilliant. JeDi has had a free hand from day one, to the point where he even hired his douchy Servais to manage from the jump.

Jedi has to deal with what we may wind up with soon. A smooth and shiny corporate ownership that hands him a spread sheet that tells him what he can and can’t do. Signing Rodriguez to a long extension was a win, but all in all the robots that run the Mariners never let him get ALL the pieces they’d need to take on a better team, and they are gonna lose most of those pitchers they have now over the next few years. When Arte finally sells, it will be just as likely we end up with OptiBaseball LLC as our new owners than Insane Billionaire Who Will Spend 400M So We Feelz Wins guy.

Jedi’s not a bad GM. And the Ms look good right now. But NINE YEARS. And they are still an org that has to celebrate like it’s Easter when Victor Robles makes good and Carlos Santana turns out to be an Ageless Male. He has frustrations.

We haven’t seen a .500 finish since Dipoto. We haven’t been to the playoffs since Dipoto. His owner continually has been limiting his budget, but Dipoto keeps on churning. It’s not his first owner that meddles too much. Seattle have a good pipeline that keeps them above .500 regularly now and will be adding the #3OA in the next draft, which will likely be another pitcher. Too bad their owner doesn’t want to afford them some bats.

Despite Arte’s meddling with Dipoto, he still got things done here. Eppler and Minisian haven’t done the greatest job on supplying our pipeline with much. Eppler packaged our 1st round pick in Wilson to get rid of salary. What a waste.

No shared bloodline, but def family.

Matthew Lugo was 3 years old when he went to his first MLB All-Star Game.

That’s one of the benefits of having a star major league player as his uncle who flew him to Minute Maid Park for the Midsummer Classic in 2004.

“I went to a couple of his series that he flew me to,” Lugo said.

The Red Sox prospect is the nephew of Carlos Beltran, who invited Lugo and his family to games in Kansas City, St. Louis and New York.

The errors the Angels commit are hard to watch. It seems they have at least one gaffe each game. It’s hard to explain as most players are veterans and Washington is big on clean play. Moncada really hurt them last night. O’Hoppe the night before. And the pitcher on Monday.

This is why I think he needs to be replaced, because he doesn’t want to manage the team he has or to recognize the reality of the fact that the team is bad and not going to get markedly better for at least a few years if we’re lucky. But I would have renewed respect for him if he told the truth and rated out his bosses “We’re not winning anything for a while and it’s important that our younger players play so they can learn. it will be hard to watch for a while.”

I wonder if this is like a Maddon situation were Perry is trying to tell him who to play or make game decisions? If so, it would explain alot about why the team is underachieving. Maybe Perry is the real problem and he is the one who needs to be fired ?

Just speculating here… Perry got into this power struggle before so it is not hard to imagine it happening again…
