Angels Out Slugged in Houston

Our Angels lost their first series of the season today despite hitting three home runs. Unfortunately they were all solo shots while the Astros had prolonged rallies that led to runs and a three run home run by the Isaac Paredes.

It took all of three pitches for the Angels to get an early lead.

And the suddenly slugging Nolan Schanuel added to the lead.

As mentioned above, Nolan is swinging with more authority this year. I linked a bit last week showing he’s already exceeded his previous high mark for exit velocity. As we sit today, his OPS is north of .850 and he appears to be taking a step forward offensively.

Kyle Hendricks had been stellar to this point but eventually throwing in the 80s will get you crushed and that eventually was today. He gave up 5 runs in the bottom of the second, highlighted by Isaac Paredes three run blast.

The Angels were never able to fully recover from that shot. Jorge Soler hit a solo shot, giving the Angels the first 30 homer campaign of 2025.

At one point Taylor Ward hit with two on while down by 3, but the Astros padded another run and won the game 7-3. On to Arlington on Tuesday.

Neto might be back by April 22nd:

https://www.si.com/mlb/angels/angels-news/zach-neto-scheduled-to-cross-final-hurdle-before-being-ready-to-return-to-angels

Does the team clip Anderson or Newman when he returns?

Neither. It will be Lopez.

But Neto should be back before the 22nd. He played 9 innings for the first time today in SLC. The Bees also have an off day tomorrow so assuming he plays back to back full games for the Bees in Sacramento on Tuesday & Wednesday I suspect we’ll see him make his 2025 debut on Friday At the Big A.

Now if we can just hold the fort down for just a few more games.

Why would we keep 3 shortstops on the roster? It makes no sense.

I mean really both Lopez and Newman should be released. Bring another arm onboard.

Frosty you can only carry a maximum of 13 pitchers on your roster at a time . (unless one of them is a 2 way player) so they couldn’t add an arm even if they wanted to.

So, Lopez is a two way player and can pitch in blowouts, lol. So keep him and cut Newman loose. If somebody is gonna sit on the bench and not play except maybe two games a month let it be Lopez pitching…

They aren’t clipping Newman.

The off say tomorrow is likely fortuitous as the team is likely a bit tired.

Trout with 3 K’s today. Hopefully it’s not the start of a really bad skid with a sky high strike out rate.

Now I hate that houston dad who grabbed the ball out of mike’s glove. Turns out he’s a liar which is appropriate for an Astros fan. He said he was protecting his son, that the hall was headed for his son’s face. I don’t need to comment on how that’s a lie. You all have seen the video

Bah humbug. I hates the Astros. Let’s take two from Texas. Get through this tough start with a good record.

Chris Cortez with a much better outing today, facing the Giants’ affiliate at High-A. His first outing was a mess – six walks before they pulled him in the third, many four pitch affairs where he simply couldn’t find the zone.

Today he’s still a touch wild, but finding the zone much more consistently, and has only given up one free pass through five. (Though the one run he surrendered was on a walk, double and wild pitch.)

Still have my doubts that he’s a starting pitcher – he’ll need to establish much more consistent control and command to be one – but he does have elite velocity. He’s been sitting at 98 throughout, hitting 101 and 102 on multiple pitches. He’d be a Joyce-like leverage reliever if they wanted to move him quickly. No harm in giving him 8-10 starts to prove otherwise though.

Amen. Gotta let him try starting. Even if he fails he’ll be stretched out n maybe can be a bulk relief guy.

What kind of movement on his fastballs does he posses?

Maybe there’s something about season/Pro ball debuts that rattle these guys? It seems like most all of our vaunted prospects were much better. Klassen as well as Aldegheri today even Austin Gordon pitched better his second time after a disastrous first start.

Do they play at all between when Tempe and and their season starts? Or is it a long lay off?

Not sure what they do or when they break minor league camp. But is seems like there is always a intrasquad game going on somewhere in Arizona.

Next series will be a considerable early season challenge. Probably will have to face Corbin and deGrom.

Corbin has not been impressive at all and should be a lefty we can crush. It should be a great opportunity for Kikuchi to get his first win but of course trAdition dictates hell probably not us.

Mahle has been the most impressive but he matches up against Soriano so on paper that should be a great duel.

If you look at the Thursday match up Silent C versus DeGrom their numbers this year are almost identical but lest hope the sinker has got maximum sink that day.

We typically struggle against lefties however.

Do we? source?

Go look at our roster’s career platoon splits. There is no reason that we shouldn’t hit left handers. Especially non elite ones like Corbin who is way past his expiration date

Not saying we will or won’t in this particular game but in recent history we have not done well against them. Check it out. I don’t have time to dig up the stats. I am working today.

Welp, Hendricks was due for a game like that.

Notice how much harder this series was for us. We still can’t really hang with teams like the Astros, even in their weakened state.

The first few weeks have been fun, but this should be a reality check. Texas series will be even harder. Fingers crossed.

On Friday the Halos had to overcome two defensive Faux Paus and a couple of terrible calls. Once those floodgates opened, it was over.

Yeah, but we will have faux paus more often than some teams because we are not as good. Take the Astros for example. Sure, they are not the Dodgers, but a team with Altuve, Walker, Alvarez, McCormick, Paredes, Pena etc etc isn’t really “weak”. We’ll hopefully not get wooped by them over the season too much, but I expect to still be under .500 against them, Rangers, Yankees, Tigers, Red Sux, Doyers, etc

OMG, we couldn’t even take four series in a row!?

Step away from the ledge people, we’ll be okay.

Go Halos!

On the positive side, we have 2 young position players in Paris, Schanuel, and O’Hoppe who are looking really good, soon to be joined by Neto. That’s twice as many as we had last year. It’s a long season and there are additional possibilities. We currently have a winning record and have won every series but one.

Yep. The blow out was depressing…. as was the second inning…. but if we slowly see the team do less of that we’ll be much improved.

I am worried about Trout. He is literally a couple harder fly balls and a couple mistake pitches from being Adell right now…. Gotta remember it’s April 13th.

The good news with the bats is that we are hitting alot of HRs. The bad news is also that we are hitting alot of HRs.

The bad thing about hitting alot of homers as a team is that everyone then TRIES to do it. HRs usually happen when you aren’t trying to hit them — just really having a good approach at the plate.

We may be getting a little homer happy at this point. The other issue is they are all SOLO shots. Hard to win that way.

Other than Schanuel, OHoppe, and Paris, no one is getting on base.

What about Ward ? And Trout.

But I would like to see more walks and singles from everyone, that creates 3 run HRs instead of everything being solo.

Maybe time to move him out of the leadoff slot then ???

Yet this game proved that Ward shouldn’t be batting in the middle of the lineup since he can’t drive in a run (other than himself) to save his life.

Solo shots have been par for the course for quite some time now.

On the bright side some of them are coming when it matters, not when we’re down 9-1 in the 8th.

If your opponent is hitting 3 run HRs solo shots don’t get you very far.

Just out of curiosity, have any of the pitchers we took in the “all pitchers all the time” draft made any good contributions to the big team?

I kinda shut down fan wise, the palpable disgust I feel for Moreno and his cronies incompetence poisoned that well. Wash being forced to play the kids (cuz they have nothing else!) and them playing well had rekindled things a bit.

This is the 2nd year of a soft rebuild. We’re moving slowly in the right direction. We still need to get better at everything. We’re better than last year. If we hit the draft and score some on the trades we need to make, next year will be even better.

So no contribution from all those pitchers then. Got it.

Glad the position kids are playing and playing well but the reclamation projects and lack of development on the pitching front is rough.

To your original question, no. Bachman is chronically injured, Ky Bush (traded to White Sox) had TJ this spring, and Chase Silseth is at AAA.

All of the remaining arms – those that have not been traded or released at this point – don’t look promising. Kerry, Erla and Costeiu are getting ritually shelled in the minors. We may see a Luke Murphy relief appearance at some point this season, but he’s been very inconsistent at AA and above.

Even if the Angels get a backend starter eventually out of Silseth, the 2021 draft was one of the worst in the Moreno era in terms of return on investment.

If ROI includes what they got in return for ill fated deadline deals then its definitely a bad one but I cant blame Arte & Perry for the fact they traded away key picks from that draft especially if Bush is ultimately able to turn into a serviceable MLB pitcher . But looking at the 21 Moreno era drafts , there were so many bad ones this one doesn’t really standout other than the oddity of an all pitcher draft ( The Angels actually drafted more pitchers in 2019) and the recency biased of begin only 4 years ago.

But far and away the worst Angels draft has to be 2010, you dont have that many first round and high round picks and comp picks (e5 picks in the first 40 and 8 picks in the first 115) and whiff so badly even if you pulled a rabbit out of the hat in th 8th round with Kole Calhoun.
