Today Patrick Sandoval went up against Kodai Senga. The game was scoreless until the third inning. Nolan Schanuel led off with a hit by pitch. Shohei Ohtani doubled to send Schanuel to third.
Brandon Drury hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Angels.
Mike Moustakas singled to score Ohtani. 2-0 Angels.
Luis Rengifo flied out and Logan O’Hoppe struck out.
Francisco Lindor homered to make it 2-1 Angels. Nolan Schanuel made this nice diving play in the fourth inning. The kid can field.
Patrick Sandoval walked four through 6 innings, including three in a row to Pete Alonso. There was no further scoring through seven when Matt Moore came in to pitch. The Mets got Danny Mendick to third with a double and a sac bunt. O’Hoppe got an error for how he fielded the bunt. Randal Grichuk and Logan O’Hoppe combined for an outfield flyout/gun ’em down at the plate double play to end the seventh. It was still 2-1 Angels. Reynaldo Lopez came in to pitch for Matt Moore in the eighth and did his job.
In the ninth, Hunter Renfroe drew a one out walk. Randal Grichuk drew a two out walk on a pitch that was ruled a wild pitch. Renfroe moved up to third. Nolan Schanuel contributed a base hit to score Renfroe. It was not pretty, but it was effective. Whew! 3-1 Angels.
Carlos Estevez came in to pitch the ninth inning. He got two guys out in a row, but Jonathan Arauz singled to keep the Mets alive. They brought in Daniel Vogelbach to pinch hit with a man in scoring position on second due to defensive indifference. Estevez struck out Daniel Vogelbach to end the game. The Angels won 3-1.
The Angels are back to 9th best AL team now!
I’ve got a dollar that says Seattle flames out in September.
Are you sure you do not want to reduce that to 50 cents, sir? They are leading 11-1 in 6th inning. After they sweep KC & the Sunshine Band, they are likely dominating the A’s.
And then September begins!
Looking at Mariners, Arstros, and Rangers September schedule, my lying eye test says Arstros have the easiest one. The Angels might determine whether Rangers or Mariners will make the playoffs or not. It will be fun September. And it also makes me sad that we have only one more month of regular season. The 2023 season flew by.
Only 173 days until pitchers and catchers report to Tempe. `;~}}
Gold.
’78 wins the internet tonight
File it under K’s Fun Facts!!
big homerun for El Segundo
Nothing against these Texas kids, but El Segundo team will most likely reach the Little League WS final tomorrow, defeating Seattle team yesterday. I am aware El Segundo is not in OC, but it might mean that in 10 years, Angels will defeat Mariners and both Texas teams to reach World Series.
Fun fact; Lars Nootbar of St. Louis played for El Segundo.
Texas team is grumbling why they do not get to play El Segundo again since Texas was previously undefeated and El Segundo had to come from loser’s bracket.
Taiwan team is also complaining the same, losing to Curacao because of one error. Taiwan was previously undefeated with Curacao having already lost to Taiwan on Wednesday.

Total fake news . Everyone knows that evil sweat shop Arte forced the 🦄 to pitch until his arm fell off
This is by Rhett Bollinger. It just creates more questions than answers.
I believe this is the first time that Nevin has exactly the same lineup as that of the previous game. It almost happened one time when Neto was replaced last minute, so I probably should wait few more hours.
https://twitter.com/JeffFletcherOCR/status/1695521795326038489
Bad luck. Schanuel replaced
Fletcher’s X just says that Schanuel scratched, but he is not injured. What is going on?
I have not heard yet
He probably gave Nevin the stink eye in the clubhouse
Fletcher is doing similar reporting to what Sammy did on Rendon yesterday.
Need to be more detailed if you are a reporter
One of his X followers wondered the same. This is what he said.
WTH
that is more likely to cause panic then whatever it is
Who fed him yesterday?
https://twitter.com/JeffFletcherOCR/status/1695544869396033931
Great. Probably now has some incurable parasite that will end up eating his entire intestinal walls.
Id say theres a 50 50 chance he never plays another Major League game.
TrAdition.
My guess is that Nevin did not like the situational hitting in the 9th inning when Nolan blooped the single to CF to plate an insurance run. We all know that in situations like that the Angels swing for the fences.
DFA’d for striking out twice last nite
And rightly so. This team has a 3 K minimum to remain in the lineup.
A few things about Kodai Senga.
-He was not highly touted like Yu Darvish, Masahiro Tanaka, or Sho who all made their marks by participating in Koshien national high school tournament.
-He was drafted as part of developmental players in 2010 by SoftBank Hawks (owned by Masayoshi Son, who I suspect was somehow associated with Japanese investor known to bid for the Angels last year)
-Developmental players in NPB are loosely equivalent to minor leaguers who are not on 40 man roster. NPB teams have 60 man roster rule. They are paid minimum of ¥2.4M ($1.6K) per year with meals and living quarter provided.
-Senga was added to Hawks 60 man roster in 2012 and was first used as reliever. Suffered several right shoulder ailments, but started 2016 season as (#5 of 6) rotation starter. He had 12 wins as starter and became the first developmental player to have 10+ wins in a single NPB season. He was selected for Team Japan for 2017 WBC, but was the losing pitcher in semi final game against Team USA. He was selected All WBC Team for 16 strike outs over 11 innings. He also declared desire to play in MLB after 2017 season. His salary reached ¥1.25B ($833K)
-2019 was his best year in NPB, striking out 227 batters and broke NPB record of SO/9 innings at 11.22, He also pitched his first no hitter. His salary went up to ¥4B ($2.67M) in 2020.
-Senga acquired FA eligibility for MLB after playing the minimum of 9 years in NPB. He chose Mets at $15M x 5 yr with 4th year at player’s option. Note that he was FA, so Mets did not have to pay posting transaction fee (It would have been $20M).
The way I look at Senga would be equivalent to a high schooler who got drafted at 12th round and, through hard work and persistence, made it to MLB as legitimate #1 or #2 starter.
I think there is something heroic about the way that Ohtani is playing through his injury with grit and production.
Sandy said it’s clear that The Sho cares about his teammates and is playing with determination through what must have been devastating news on his injury, which could require a second TJ surgery – the first happening in 2018, which seems like just yesterday.
There are so many damn prima donnas out there in baseball land, guys like Verlander, we’ve recently learned, who are all about a payday, or personal ambition, or just plain assholes.
Ohtani stands out for his old-school values of team, taking care of your own (giving his Home Run Derby money to the Angles training and personnel staff), and being humble and self-sacrificing in the me-first age that we are living in….
And then there’s Rendon, the anti-Ohtani who exists to collect his paychecks.
Ha Ha Ha.

Not really. Read my history.
I have all season . It’s beyond obsessive to the point of comical ML . Your lack of self awareness is astonishing.
WTF is this border skirmish about?
Imbroglio, rhubarb, kerfuffle, bobbery, brouhaha…boys will be boys!
How about a tussle ?
Give em’ boxing gloves. Unless they of course they prefer to oil wrestle…
how about a wet T shirt contest?
The Mariners are now tied with the Rangers for first place in the AL West
Texas, on an eight-game losing streak, had sole possession of first place since April 14th
Could have been Us but we cursed
We still have a chance to finish the season with a winning record.
Just amazing,
The Merman have now won 25 of their last 33 games.
This is the winning streak the Angels had envisioned during the pennant race.
Exactly. Not blaming anyone in particular, but the first game of the 4 game Mariners series where Estevez gave up grand slam to relatively unknown Cade Marlowe was decisively pivotal. With that win, the Mariners have gone on to sweep the Angels and have been in current winning trend. Angels, on the other hand, have not won any series and been swept by the Reds.
During this 33 game hit streak Jerry’s kids have averaged 5.65 runs per game with a team OPS of .839.The pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.33 while allowing only 27% of the inherited runs to score. Defensively, only 9 runs scored by the opposition were unearned. 9!
During the Angels last 33 games the Halos have scored an average 4.0 runs per game with a team OPS of only .696. The Angels pitching has yielded a 5.01 ERA over that same time frame and the shotty defense has led to 23 Unearned Runs.
Pitching and defense. When the Giants won 3 WS, 2010, 2012 and 2014, it was all about pitching and defense. You just hope the offense will contribute with key hits at the the right time. I like this style of team.
2014 & 2015 Kansas City Royals were the postal child for a similar strategy In fact even going more extreme they did it with Defense and a lock down bullpen but not necessarily dominant starting pitching.
How about our 2002 Angels with our lockdown bullpen, and great situational hitting and running.
I laughed when Mariners traded Sewald for Rojas and Canzone, thinking that Dipoto gave up on this season. Rojas used to hit only 0.228/0.292/.296 with 0HR for DBacks, but for Mariners, 0.291/0.328/0.436 with 2HR. Canzone is pretty decent stick, too. Is Mariners hitting coach really that good?
Imagine the devastation that the Rangers and they’re fans will feel if they blow this? Wow,
It’s something to look forward to.
Along with the Mariners blowing it in September.
With playoff pressure gone, Angels will face Texas and Mariners for 3 game series each next month, Would not be all surprised that Angels will perform ideal spoiler role for them. It is too bad they don’t play Arstros in September.
*their
At the Pantera – Metallica concert tonight. In between bands. Angels won. Cool.
nice.
Going Sunday.
We’ll be there too.
Sofi is frankly way too big a venue for music (not to mention being a soul less example of modern architecture, but I digress) – Metallica still kicks ass
Yea heard that acoustics not the best ,,, especially if you’re up high.
Never been to sofi so excited to check it out. Wish pantera was playing oh well.
We’re in section 207 – which are good, but not great seats. It’s simply too cavernous for music on the whole. Metallic brought it and will again tomorrow night.
Sweet: we are in 200s also. Looking forward to a 16 dollar beer, gonna be worth it
I was definitely happy to catch Pantera.
RESPECT WALK !!!!
Remember the roof leaks. So if it is raining, I would bring your raincoat, 😉
Seriously? It’s only a few years old. Haha
How can there be a Pantera without Dimebag?
Yeah, it’s still weird. Always will be. They did a video tribute to him towards the end of their set.
Does anyone have video/GIF of the K3YerOut against Rengifo to end the 8th? Terry and Mark were VERY upset about that one.
Was this ump the second coming of Angel Hernandez and Laz Diaz?
Today’s game Umpire was in their class all the way.
Not one of them graduated Umpire School.
my buffer is only about 15mins. Shudda asked about 20 mins ago
Sorry, just got home a few minutes ago.
it was a horrendous call.
I only saw a few innings but in that short time, it was like
10 bad calls against us
10 bad calls for us
trash
He may have been worse than either of those blind mice.
Is it completely outta pocket to compare Schanuel to Ichiro at the plate ?
Just curious
Yes. Before Shohei appeared, Ichiro was someone many Japanese baseball fans including me worshipped. He is probably going to be second unanimous HOFer after Mariano Rivera. Ichiro was fast with 509 stolen bases over 19 years in MLB. He hit 362 doubles, 96 triples, and 117 homeruns. He holds single season MLB record 262 hits in 2004, which may never be broken.
Let’s wait on Schanuel. He got drafted couple months ago and only played 7th MLB game. Let him marinate for a season or two. I want to see when Nevin ( or whoever new manager may be) asks Schanuel in spring training to hit for power and he unleashes 500 ft homer on opposite field, just as Ichiro did when Lou Piniella asked him to pull to the right side since Ichiro kept hitting single to the left side. Ichiro pulls and hits a line drive homer over the right side fence and quipped, “Is that ok, skip?”
No one will ever break that hits in a season record, never.
Well at the same time he wouldn’t take a walk to save his life.
Particularly in the current era of HR or SO ball.
Oh, absolutely! I should have clarified — their approach at the plate are somewhat similar? Maybe?
Schanuel has that Ichiro/Arraez contact gene.
If Schanuel learns to do that pull sleeve up and hold the bat vertically like Samurai sword before every pitch AND me consuming half pint of cold Heferweizen, I can see the resemblance. 😉
He used to fart in the batter’s box prior to every pitch. They didn’t call him itchy-hole for nothing.
😂 😅 😆
Plus he slashed and dashed alot during his career.
That ain’t Schanuel.
And don’t overlook Ichiro’s arm. He has a canon.
The play when Laser Beam became the most popular Japanized English word.
https://youtu.be/WYAxk01E404?si=5V1hmZ9ZP4n610Mw
I saw him throw a shot to 3rd at Angel Stadium and couldn’t believe what I had just seen.
He was a pitcher in high school, and he loved pitching. Of course, when he started in NPB, he had to stick to hitting as position player, but if he were given a chance to be two way, he could have been a decent short inning reliever, and he would have cherished it.
I also recall when he was with the Marlins, the manager let him pitch an inning in Ichiro’s 1st season in Miami in late September. I think he was still throwing 90 MPH fastball at age 41.
Naw homie, I dig it.
He is closer to JB Shuck than Ichiro. LOL. Ichiro was godly. Best Japanese player ever.
Mmmm, I’d say Ichiro was godly in his mystique more than his play. His hitting was definitely overrated. He was a singles hitter that didn’t work any walks. Career OPS+ of 107.
On the other hand he was incredible in the field and on the base paths.
plus he was physically extremely flexible.
I stand corrected. Shanuel now has 7 game hitting streak.
Nothing to celebrate here … What is our record ? 62-67 ?
That is pathetic. We have to be the biggest underachievers in MLB.
There was no joy to steal, lol.
Injuries took care of that.
Joy – in no particular order:
Nolan Schanuel played well
Carlos Estevez pitched well
Shohei did Shohei things
Patrick Sandoval pitched pretty dang well
Take your happy pill, get some sleep, we’ll go back to dooming tomorrow, old friend.
I’m stimpy and Jack is Ren. PUT ON YOUR HAPPY HELMET, JACK-O!
You don’t get it do you ?
no. did i miss some funny joke?
Jack, I had a dream last night we won 7 in a row here. So far it’s coming true
😉
Wouldn’t that also be the Padres & the Mets ?
The Padres say hello.
The Mets say:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdqoNKCCt7A
Padres are a bigger disappointment as they don’t have the injury factor that plagued the Angels.
I’d throw us in a tier with the Mets, Yankees, White Sox and Padres.
we r sofa king play awf bownd
Seattle is finally about to catch Texas.
damn
Baseball God is finicky. Is it Yogi Berra who said that? Or is it something about fat opera singer sings. I forget. I guess Yogi Berra was not exactly politically correct.
It’s about pitching this time of year. Look at the Mariner lineup, not impressive at all.
I think the one word to describe the Halo’s season this year is:
Sad
All of the injuries, the bad managerial moves, Perry’s desperate recent acquisitions, Arte suddenly NOT selling the team, and the erratic play on the field has made this a season to forget.- despite the team still having a statistical chance to make the playoffs.
At the end, though, Ohtani tearing his UCL is the saddest part of all.
Yup
I think you summed it up nicely.
It would have been better if Perry used his top prospects who would contribute next year and provide value. He always comes off desperate.
Yes, I feel real bad for Ohtani. He deserved to hit the open market at peak value with no injury concern. Quietly was hoping he would hook on with the Giants.
To me, he’s the guy at the poker table, who doesn’t realize that he is the mark.
Along with watching Mike Trout aging before our eyes.
As he quickly is becoming the second most favorite Angel Nolan of all time, Schanuel currently has more hits ( 8 singles) then walks (7) in his very young career.
But what’s the over/under on his first MLB extra base hit?
September 15, 2023.
Perry W
Eppler L
I really really really like Schanuel 😇
Perry is still an idiot because he is just a Yes man for Arte.
If Perry was a true yes man, we would have signed Trea Turner to 10 years $300 million.
I am a big fan of Perry
The only reason that didn’t happen is because they were saving money to keep Shohei. They dodged a a big bullet.
The only reason that it didn’t happen was because Perry told Arte it wasn’t the shrewd move.
If Arte had his way, Turner is a ‘gel
arguing about this is a waste of time unless we were in the room with Farty and Pairry
it’s not an argument lol. Arte literally said it 😭
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/angels-owner-arte-moreno-reveals-he-wanted-to-pursue-trea-turner-in-mlb-free-agency/amp/
Most of us are familiar with that information. It is amazing that Arte DID listen to the advice. I wonder if Perry pulled ‘George Costanza’ on Arte. 😉
the word shrewd never appeared in the article
That’s a very shrewd observation 🤓
It would be a very Arte thing to do. It’s why when the team needed top tier pitching, we ended up with Vernone Wells and later, Josh Hamilton.
So true.
I enjoy discussions like this. I am always open to different opinions. I am far from an expert on baseball.
How could they possibly have signed Shohei and Turner with Rendon eating up so much salary?
We would have missed out on; Anderson, yikes…..Renfroe, darn…..Drury, sad…..Gio, oh no…..Estevez, gosh no…….stuck with Walsh, Adell, Fletch, but no Moose, no Neto, along with trading Ohtani…..so yep, we would have had a new SS named Turner.
With 3-straight years of sub-.500 baseball, hard to be impressed.
I am a true fan of Winning.
Someday, hopefully in the not too distant future, I will be able experience that feeling again.
I don’t Arturo had $300 million extra for Minasian to play with.
