The MLB draft appears to be an even bigger crapshoot than the NFL draft. I have nothing of substance to add other than I hope our picks pan out. I know, DUH !!!

This draft is the most draft draft we’ve had in a long time. Total crap shoot. There were like five players I knew I actually thought were good and all of them were sure to go before we picked. Skenes, Crews, Langford, Wilson, Lowder and Dollander were the only guys I had any sense of wishing for. Just about EVERY high school player falls into the pile of “I know one of these guys will be really good and I have no idea who it is”.
I just don’t care if Joe Redfield was unranked and picked early since I have no sense of what almost ANY of the players that were available can do. Even if I did, it’s just not that big a deal. Andrew Painter was my guy a couple drafts ago. He was available. We didn’t take him. It’s OK cause, at the time, for all I knew the high school kid would fall apart.
I have almost no opinion about the Angels picks in this draft. I actually like Schanuel fine. If he has less than ideal power but plays 1b well and hits over .300 I’ll take that and be happy. Other than him and Minacci, who I bet we’ll see in the pen soon, the rest of these guys I will likely not stress over in a positive or negative way for at least three years. Sure, I was probably more inclined towards Tommy Troy, Kyle Teel or Chase Davis than Schanuel but not so much that I’m gonna be unhappy about it. I kind of liked Hurston Waldrup too… though he’s basically Sam Bachman.
Meh. Plus we got Ben Joyce’s brother. Roiling with discordant piss over this draft just isn’t something I feel knowledgeable enough about the players, or even our development programs circa 2025, to do. Like being bitter about a 19 year old Kevin Maitan failing. Or a 22 year old Maitan failing. Do I really care about that? Just make me a few solid MLB players. I don’t care if it “doesn’t count as someone we developed” or what not. Just poop me out some cheap talent that does it’s job.

Very little track record of it. Took two years off to deal with mental health issues, pitched 10 innings for Tenn this year, then dealt with an elbow injury. Trying to reestablish himself on the Cape at the moment.

That’s fine – I like optimism. Just didn’t know if Pineapple had a more strategic take, or had intel on some of these deeper picks that they could share.
Perry’s draft team went so off the radar with these picks, BA and Prospects Live don’t even have scouting reports for almost two thirds of them. Some have very little in the way of track record and come from smaller / unheralded programs.
Given the Angels purged their crosscheckers and most regional scouts in the pandemic, just wondering if there’s something more here than the product of some one-day workouts and showcases, and personal passion picks from remaining scouts in the org.

PTP is looking like he plans to spend 0 money on 1B/DH in the future. Between The Thick King and all these guys this year and maybe some Cabbage…. that’s a lot of 1B. I’d complain, but we have “up the middle” prospects and they’re picking up OF too, adding a few arms to the pile. Meh. I guess.
