LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Mo Changes

Really interesting week here in Halo Land. We had the analytics vs. old school coaching battle converge with the new boss vs. previous regime hires dynamic resulting in pitching coach Mike Maddux and two others being fired.

I think Mozeliak’s move this week means a huge organizational shake up is underfoot. For one, the new pitching coach has a two decade long relationship with Mo and utilizes the analytics Mo likes. Secondly, you don’t fire a respected coach if you plan on being in the job temporarily.

Randy Flores. I’m calling it now. Randy Flores will be the next GM of the Angels once Mo takes on the President of Baseball Operations title. Flores is one of three Cardinals execs I profiled earlier this summer and I am not the only one saying his name in the press area.

Side note, this week was the first time I actually felt normal or at home in the press area. I know where I’m going, I have pals, and the staff is getting to know me. It is still unreal to be doing this, but I no longer feel like my first day at a new school.

Speaking of Wednesday night, the full house and Angels home crowd reminded me of the good old days. Catching up with AngelsChamps and his adorable duo before the game was great. So was George Klassen.

Klassen was recalled this week after a dominant run in Salt Lake in July where he was the Pitcher of the Month for the PCL.

If the Angels are going to turn this thing around any time soon, they will need a couple of waves of young talent come to Anaheim and excel. Currently, it looks like Klassen, Joel Hurtado, and Raudi Rodriguez are the next potential wave.

I found something very interesting about Raudi Rodriguez this week. When pondering whether or not Wade Meckler is Angels long term answer as a leadoff hitter, I looked at potential platoon partners for when the Angels face a lefty. Turns out Raudi has significant reverse splits.

Pitching is going to be the key to any Angels turnaround and I think Mozeliak is getting that process started early. He needs to craft a comprehensive, Cardinals Way style program that extends from the Arizona Complex League to the Major League level. He also needs to identify potential talent on the farm and some stood out this week.

Austin Gordon does not get a lot of hype but the 6 foot 5, 210 pounder has above average control to go along with three average rated pitches (fastball, curve, slider). His fastball does not get a lot of whiffs but his secondary stuff is improving and gets more swing and miss.

Per Baseball America: Gordon is projected to have the pitchability and size to fit into the back of an MLB starting rotation, with a high-floor fallback option as a multi-inning reliever if he does not develop a dominant putaway pitch.

Not a pitcher, but how great would it be to have a solid third baseman?

Been enjoying some Bees games as well. And I love defense so much. If this Rada kid can hit at all, I can’t wait to see plays like this being made in center field. Love Trout but his defense is really bad and it is time the Angels moved him out of center for either Rada or Siri.

Back to the pitching. In what could be an interesting twist of fate, Perry Minasian was fired largely because he failed to build a bullpen. But with Ben Joyce, Luke Murphy, Samy Natera Jr. all pitching well, Perry might have handed Mo the beginnings of a good relief core.

The key is the Angels need more. More bats, more starters, more depth. And they are adding more when they can. But for right now there are no opportunities to add more. Rebuilds take time and this is the dead time.

Mo could have added more prospects at the trade deadline had he traded Reid Detmers. But he did not find a return he liked. Maybe Mo thinks that Detmers plus the new analytics can be something special. If that is the case, should the team look to extend Detmers and build around him?

If I squint, a rotation of Detmers, Kikuchi, Urena, Klassen, Grayson is not a horrible starting point. I have it on good authority at Detmers and Grayson were two pitchers upset at not being given all the data they felt would help them.

MLB Pipeline updated their Top 100 list and the Angels have two players in the top half. They also updated their organizational list and a once pitching heavy organization looks a lot more balanced.

There are several takeaways from the updated list but the main one is that the farm is improving.

From around baseball:

The Rays headed out West and kicked everybody’s butts. Would love to see them win one.

FanGraphs goes down the worm hole of putting Skubal back on the Tigers.

They also looked at which teams are best built for the playoffs.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I have to say attending multiple games per week as press really limits the amount of other baseball you can watch. I think the Angels are being smart in broadcasting their minor league affiliates. They will be all we can watch for a while next year.

One great thing about baseball is the friendships it can create. I’m going to a birthday party for a kid I coached last year. Our sons have remained friends and the family is great. My son is beginning to realize that while I love baseball the real reasons I have him play have little to do with the actual game.

Solid waiver claim for the Angels today. Rays third round pick in the Neto draft, Trevor Martin.

Still only 25, plus fastball and good extension, 6’5″, solid expected numbers through much of the past four seasons. Just a testament to the depth of both Tampa’s system and the relief corps that they’d let a guy like this go.

Potentially promising long reliever with some backend starter optionality.

Chase Burns – 2024 draft class, No.2 pick out of Wake Forest. Chase has a 14-2 record pitching for sub-.500 team. Had a string of 17 starts without a loss, including 12 winning decisions before losing his last game but bounced back today beating the Marlins 1-0. Reds got a good one.

This is new, new can’t be new if it is older than new when it comes to new everyone comes up with something new when it is new. Here is something new…move Neto to third and Guzman to SS instead of trading Neto the team has a power bat at third costing nothing. Well, new for the team anyway.

This would also be cool. If the Tigers make it to the series post Skubal? Cool. If the Padres make it further than the Dodgers? Cool. If the Red Sox beat the Dodgers again and Doyer fans kill each other in the parking lot. Sweet. If this White Sox team wins it all? Incredibly cool. But if the Rays, and especially Brewers finally win their first? That’d be neato cheato.

After being ambivalent about Reid Detmers, I’m now in the “extend him” camp.

Even if guys like Klassen, Dana or Bremner pan out, Detmers will still occupy an important slot in the rotation. He’s also relatively young, though highly experienced.

I’ve been waffling on that exact thing since the deadline. The stronger Reid finishes the season the better the trade offers will be in the offseason. We could get a gawd offer for him. He’s one of my faves who I would be happy extending. If he won’t extend, you trade him asap

With options like Nimmala and Guzman at the ready, Neto really feels like the trade candidate in the coming year, if he doesn’t tank his stock with a fall swoon and listless play.

Trade him for a package of near-ready OFs and arms.

Agree that extending Detmers might be the wiser financial play, given scarcity in the SP market. You’ll have to overpay in years and dollars for something remotely like him.

I worry that Neto would take a position change as a demotion, and he seems to play erratically when he loses his swagger. Would like to see him finish on a hot streak and get flipped for assets the team more dearly needs.

Kikuchi also feels like a trade candidate, if Mo can squeeze anything out of that final year on the market – even just a backend prospect.

Then give the fifth starter innings to Snead, Gordon, maybe Dana, and continue to trade for other SP types in the upper minors.

Issue is going to be I believe the 2027 season will be a “covid” season of 50-60 games. What is 1 year worth of Kikuchi worth in a shortened season?

Probably not a lot, but I’m sure Arte would like to shed that cash, and I’d like to see innings given to the young over just playing out Kikuchi’s contract for no particular reason.

A clean balance sheet (excepting Trout) might coax Moreno to spend entering the ’28 season. The right amount of free agent supplementation could accelerate the opening of the Angels contention window to 2028. Some power in the OF, a couple decent starters, might get them there.

The developmental arms still feel a couple years out.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Turk's Teeth

Yah. If we had all the solid bench meat we have now, Trout, Detmers, Neto, Nolan (I guess) and about 2 starters and a couple really nails relief arms developed I’d be fine with spending 100M a year or so on an OF and some starters to get things rolling. Trouble is, on the position player side, it’s THIN in 2028 right now.

Tyler O’Niel for a power OF? We could go after pitchers like Logan Gilbert, Justin Steele, Tanner Houck, Clark Schmidt, Joe Ryan… maybe?

Strait FA pick ups will not be plentiful.

If Kikuchi can come back strong and finish the season, then he might be traceable. He essentially be a 1 yr/21.5 million player. I don’t think he’d get that on the open market unless he can show something over the next 6 weeks. The Angels would probably have to pay down his contract just to trade him.

In retrospect, seeing the package that Boston sent to Baltimore for Adley, you have to think the same package, or similar, was being offered for the Angels for Neto. Basically everything on the table save for Arias.

I don’t fault Mo for deferring the decision, but I think I would have taken that package, maybe with a tweak to bring back Godbout instead of the catcher piece. They got two top 100 guys, including a projected mid-rotation starter, that fit the Angels timeline much more than Neto himself, or Arias, given they have two serviceable shortstop options on the immediate horizon.

I stated that on deadline day after the Adley deal was announced. We really don’t know for sure how strong Boston’s interest was in Neto but we do know Breslow does not value his propects. Mo should have spent the week working on him.

Last place projection winner playoff Rox vs A’s and the Champ is, drum roll please, Rox. Would much prefer it be us but can’t help rooting for the wins nightly and 7 runs with only one EBH and Walter pitching so good tells me that we will need a lot of luck drafting in the top 2. I bet Trouty wishes that we play the Rangers every night until the end.

At this stage there is no consensus Roch or Grady at the top. Someone may break out – but right now – it doesn’t look like a clear drop being 3 or 4. One could argue that any one of the top 5 could have won that sweepstakes. Time will tell. Regardless, picking early will be a good thing even if we don’t get #1. But, it sure would be nice to get one in the next rounds and win the lottery too.

I would like the Angels to explain why Mike Maddux was given the bums rush for not using the Angels vaunted 1910 technology but Brady Anderson and his bottom five offense is still there. Apparently he alone has mastered the technology. Of course, this leaves the same question for Suzuki.

I think Moz figures Kurt is a sunk cost and not worth removing for <50 games left. I’d be surprised if the recent lineup changes are not a directive to Kurt. So Moz got what he wanted except for Lowe.

I think Kurt may get an opportinuty for 1 more year if he shows promise with the team from the day Maddox left. It would show that they want to play for Kurt and if he has them winning then we may give another chance. But Kurt has a super weak team, so winning is going to be hard. Imagine if he played .500 ball from 8/10/2026 to the end of the season. Would you be happy with that result from THIS team?

Considering the Angels currently have a winning record against only one of the teams left to play, going .500 over this last stretch would be an acomplishment. I think Kurt could stick around for a couple years, but if Moz only signs a 3 year contract Suzuki will be out soon.

That is a reasonable explanation that makes sense, but the only thing is, that would mean that the new manager, if there is one, and the GM, if their is one would not be involved in choosing the pitching coach. I am not a fan of Suzuki staying around, but in my opinion, the team isn’t going to be any good in 27 if their is one, or 28, so util then, it doesn’t really matter. Without spending some money I believe this will take longer than people are expecting. I don’t believe we can expect the division to stay the way it is this year going forward and Oakland will be very good as will Houston and Seattle.

Because one is one person who does one job and the team felt like they were in a spot where that particular guy could be removed now, while the other guy is a different person in a different situation with a different group of guys doing a different job entirely. They didn’t feel like it was a good time to fire him.

This is how real life works.

Babe Ruth once said, “If I’d just tried for them dinky singles, I could’ve batted around .600.” Over his part two games, Trout has gone 6 for 10, all singles. Granted that Mike is past his prime, would you rather he concentrates on getting hits and on base, or would you rather he hits homeruns with a low batting average and lots of strikeouts?

Not questioning his work ethic but he is definitely not above average defensively and barely average at best. He is certainly not our biggest problem except for the fact that as long as he’s the 1B, he is keeping the team from putting someone there who is potentially better defensively and actually hits like a 1B. If forces you to get that offense from potentially a lesser offensive position like 2B, 3B, or CF. It has other impacts. If he was a C, 2B, SS, or CF that was a plus defender with speed and the same offense, he would have far more value. Now, if they are able to find someone to play 2B that hits like a 1B, then you can live with Nolan at 1st.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Roy Hobbs

Actually Nolan DEFINITELY IS above average defensively this year. He has a +3 OAA. That is not setting the world on fire, but it is solidly above average. The best in the game is Franco in KC with +8 OAA.

But facts are lame….

Roy Hobbs

Facts are not lame but defensive metrics are not the same as offensive metrics and I have watched virtually every game this year and he is not exceptional defensively. If he is actually above average for 1B, that says more about the poor defenders at first than it does about him.

I was at the Colts season finale game years ago, the season that gave them the #1 overall pick that was used to draft Andrew Luck.

The Colts won that game on a last second field goal, moving them into a tie for the worst record instead of holding it outright (they ended up with the first pick on a strength of schedule tiebreaker).

Never in my life have I heard a home crowd make a weirder cacophony of sounds on a game-winning walk-off play than that moment. A purely confusing mixture of disgust and celebration.

So. What you’re saying is. MOAR KIDZ!!!

I actually think that we are seeing a little bit of the effects of having a pitching lab start to show up in the mixed soup of our farm arms. It is where “the plan” for our pitching prospects is likely generated, even if it is put into action in bullpens and games in the IE and Alabama. It has likely not been implemented cleanly across levels yet. But you can see a jump in the Angels pitching prospect group as a whole this season. Actually mid-season. Where it is starting to look like training is becoming results more often for more kids on the mound. We’ve got to keep it going, get it working all the way to the MLB level, and then develop the same thing for hitters.

I am starting to drink the Munroe Kool-Aid. Tri-City and then Madison are two places I don’t expect an unheralded 3B prospect to turn in an .886 OPS. I don’t know if his actual swing has issues. I’m kind of doubting he will put up massive home run numbers. But I get a little excited about an infield of say Munroe, Guzman, Advincula, Schanuel all being pesky OBP hitters with 10-20 HR each in the nearish future with Neto having been traded for a monster power hitting outfield prospect.

I hate the Dodgers. That’s it. I just hate them.
