LA Angels Weekend News Crash: The Purge Begins?

It is late July and the eyes of the baseball world are focused on Detroit and Anaheim. Not because either team is headed for October glory but because those two squads hold the most interesting trade chips on the market.

Over the next three days we will see of John Mozeliak purges the roster and begins anew. On Wednesday he gave us signs that might be in store.

First he cut Minasian mistake Alek Manoah.

Then he traded Minasian draft pick Chase Silseth and Minasian trade acquisition Logan O’Hoppe to Texas for a 19 year old who was on nobody’s radar. Here’s a little video of the kid.

Shipping out 4 years of Silseth and 2 of O’Hoppe is not something the Angels of old would do. While not a big trade, this possible shift in organizational philosophy has people wondering if a full scale rebuild is coming.

Like this:

The thing about doing Weekend Links this time of year is that anything I post will likely be obsolete at some point this weekend if not in the hours between writing and publishing this piece.

Here’s my recap of the Angels trade rumors and assets as of yesterday (today as I type this).

I’ve had a lot of fun with the trade deadline stuff.

Detmers to the Cubs for our next great catcher and a solid infielder?

The Cubs are a fairly new entrant into the Detmers sweepstakes. We have already known about the White Sox. Which trade package do you prefer?

Yes, Turk’s Teeth is a great muse. Soriano to Milwaukee for the catcher we need?

You’d expect the Detmers to the Cubs piece to get solid traffic and it did. But I was shocked the Soriano to Milwaukee piece got a lot more eyeballs than my Neto to Boston or Neto to Tampa Bay pieces.

We’ve justifiably ripped Neto quite a bit for his defense and K’s on the board. There are reasons to think he will not net a huge return. But this trade market also kind of sucks. There’s no real big name on the offensive side. Which means, Zach Neto is likely the best bat on the trading block.

A purge in baseball comes with new talent and fresh faces. And so it goes in Anaheim. Out with the Silseth, in with the Murphy. The kid has been on fire lately.

Many of you might remember Murphy was my draft crush that year. Vandy was just so stacked and he mowed through the SEC. He struggled for years in the minors but finally put it together this season. I am excited to see the kid.

And one more good thing from the farm. This kid might be good.

From around baseball:

Dodgers owner Mark Walter is under investigation by the Feds who seized his computer and phone last September.

There’s more information on Walter here. Fortunately for him and the Dodgers, fraud is apparently legal now. He’ll either skate on the charges or be elected.

Out with Skubal (?) in with top prospect Max Clark. Detroit is interesting in two ways this weekend.

Enjoy your weekend and update the comments as rumors and signings break. I will say Logan O’Hoppe is a great guy and I wish him well (but also hope he does not Napoli us). He is the Angels

Supposedly the market is waiting for Skubal to be moved first. Can the Dodgers trade for him already so we can get things moving

I can imagine. Teams need to know what Detroit will do. Only then (whether Detroit will trade or keep him) will they pursue the next best options (Reid, Jose, etc)

Is this the beginning of the decline phase? Obviously he’s got a long way to go before he stops being a great player, and at $2 million a year, who cares. But perhaps we’ve already seen the best of him.
“The Athletic’s Katie Woo and Fabian Ardaya report Shohei Ohtani (knee) “did not sound certain this week that his knee will be at 100 percent the rest of the way.”They point to the idea that Ohtani already needed a day off after recently getting one on Monday as a “red flag,” but note that it is “unlikely” the Dodgers will put Ohtani on the injured list. Still, this is an injury that sounds like it has a chance to linger and cause further interruptions to Ohtani down the stretch. Fantasy managers should be prepared for that possibility. Manager Dave Roberts has already said he’s “very confident” that Ohtani would start on Friday. – Rivers McCown

We saw the best Shohei will ever be as a 2-way player in Anaheim. There is slim chance his body holds up and allows him to do keep doing the unthinkable as he ages thru his 30s.

Unlike Trout, Ohtani will continue to dominate as a hitter well into the latter stage of his career.

When he’s healthy enough he’s the best pitcher in the sport. Well, maybe Miz stole the crown this year, but Ohtani is still a top 5 pitcher. I just don’t know how his body will continue to handle the physical demand

That playoff game last year is by far the best 2-way game in MLB history. We never saw him do anything like that in Anaheim, great as he was.

Singular game? Absolutely. His three best 2-way seasons for the time being are still with us (2021-2023)

Let’s never forget the 7/27/23 doubleheader in Detroit

— 9 inning 1 hit shutout in game 1
— 2 HR in game 2

Seems more like clickbait. Let’s reconvene in two years and see if there has been any chronic issues. And see if anything medical is performed in off seasons.

Even on the very tiny chance he will never play again because his knee won’t allow him to stand up straight, the Dodgers (and MLB) already got what they wanted – two championships, that guy on the world stage. The best that money can buy.

The best Adell swap I’ve come up with thus far that works in the sim. The Braves have shown interest in Jo, and Clohisy is a big pop-up guy who isn’t a top 30 guy yet in the Braves system, but BA calls him potentially the most underrated guy in the minors.

Patrick Clohisy, OF, Braves

July Stats: .388/.473/.700, 9 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 18 runs, 12 RBIs, 16 stolen bases

Drafted out of St. Louis in the 11th round back in 2024, Clohisy made his way onto the prospect radar with a strong showing in the Arizona Fall League in 2025, earning an all-star selection. In 2026, Clohisy has built off that momentum, hitting his way to Triple-A by the all-star break. The outfielder is currently not ranked in the Braves’ Top 30, but that could change with continued strong performance. Over 83 games this season (mostly coming at Double-A), Clohisy has hit .292/.368/.503 with 10 home runs and 45 stolen bases.

Clohisy has been on fire in July, hitting nearly .400 on the month while stealing 16 bases and racking up 15 extra-base hits. He’s now just a shout away from the majors and could be the type of tooled-up, upper-minors prospect who slides under the radar on his way to a successful MLB career.

Clohisy’s under-the-hood data shows above-average bat-to-ball skills, a balanced approach at the plate and at least average power with optimized angles. Put it all together, and he might be the most underrated player in the minors.

Checks the boxes that Moz says he’s after: lefty with power, good hit tool (currently 82% contact rate in AAA). Doesn’t rob the Braves.

It feels like the best match on the table between ATL, PHI, and NYY. And yeah, the previous org connect is still probably there with the folks Perry hired.

These are the times when I wish I was actually in the room to stalk the principals until they pick up the phone.

He wasn’t even on the radar until this year – true pop up guy. Interestingly, it has universal acclaim thus far on the BTV boards – well, 7 thumbs up, lol – from both fanbases.

This feels like the sort of guy you trade when you’re leading your division, need OF help due to recent injury, and you suddenly have a guy who wasn’t a guy a year ago, but checks all the boxes for the team you’re trading with.

While waiting for a trade announcement or WW3 to start, I have a short story on meddlesome owners. The Rangers started with Bob Short and continue to go through more. When Brad Corbett (Made his millions selling PVC pipe) was owner, he took Billy Martin and the newly acquired Willie Davis to dinner. And after Corbett explained to Davis he would be batting 3rd and playing Centerfield, etc. etc. Finally Billy Martin had a chance to speak and he said “Plus come see me if you want a good deal on irrigation pipe.”

I agree. In my experience, really smart people don’t typically seek out validation or get defensive when questioned. It doesn’t mean that he’ll get everything right as even the brightest people often fail to comprehend their blinds spots. It does give me some hope that this ship is finally beginning a long slow turn in the correct direction.

It’s a harsh criticism, but a number of the people that the Angels have hired have seemed to be lower intellect lap dogs or people who took the job with zero leverage and perhaps a combination of both.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  PedroCerrano

I think leverage is a little important. I have worked for several pretty intelligent creative or marketing directors now. When one of them gets smooshed under a stupid VP or CEO it doesn’t matter how smart they are, their brain is only as good as what can get past the moron above them…. before said moron just decides to change the plan for the third time.I have literally seen a person look like a genius, get stuck under new leadership, and look so stupid they couldn’t even really articulate much to the teams under them about what to do… much less hatch a plan and execute it.

Telling the world we’re looking for a left-handed power bat or a young catcher lowers our leverage IMO. I’d rather he’d say we’re looking for the best possible return, since we literally need everything.

I like hearing this :

We have to do well and have success in these types of trades. We just can’t do something rash to say we did something to appease a narrative

Really glad to hear Moz say this. People who are hungry for trades because they are bored need to learn how to deal with their boredom. Right now a “no trade’ is better than a bad trade. So far we are 0-1. Don’t want that to continue.

No one is hungry for trades because they are bored or for tradings sake, and no one wants bad trades. Moz disagrees with you however on your assessment of his 1st trade, so you either trust him or you don’t.

Even though I agree, that no trade is better than a bad trade, If we are unable to make good trades for the current assets that we have now, it will set the rebuilding process back 2 years at least because of the looming lockout, the number of teams in the hunt, the declining value of the assets, and the fact that that the players we get in return will be two years behind. You’re getting minor leaguers back and it’s either minor leaguers now or 2 years from now.

Moz needs to consummate the needed trades now, this weekend or there will be a significant delay.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend
Reply to  Roy Hobbs

See THAT is a big problem we have. Every one of our biggest 3-4 trade assets lose about 20-25% of their value as soon as the deadline passes and we don’t trade them. If we hold on to them we basically hold onto our current team + the dream the Arte will spend on about 10 players in addition to the current players who will need contracts.

For a group of fans who seem to shiver and squirm with delight when ever Arte loses money this desired course of action seems bizarre. But they manage it.

What’s really scary is soon we will be early 2000s Astros bad, but with new rules preventing tanking from helping us. Who do we have that’s worth trading in say 2028? A much less valuable Neto annnnnddddd….

I’m waiting

You are wrong on two counts Hobbs; First some people here ARE bored ; they have said as much… Second, you must not have read the whole Moz quote, or your reading comprehension is very bad ; he stated that we don’t have to make all these trades now since the players involved are still under team control… thus, the time limits are imagined or at least exaggerated.

So if you personally are not bored you are anxious. And there is no reason to be anxious or to panic. If the offers are good he will make the trades, if not he will wait. That is as it should be.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  JackFrost

I am bored. But I don’t want trades just because I’m bored because I know that, as soon as the trades are done, I will still be bored, reading old men bitch about how stupid the people who are smarter than them are and rubbing their hands together thinking of sweet releases as though Lowe or Soler not being here will somehow magic poof them into not being a leathery pink sack of dumb.

I’ve read the Moz quotes. I’m also not suffering from literacy autism so I know that, even if he were sweating blood desperate to make trades NOW he would say exactly what he just said. I also know he’s smart enough to realize that all of these guys net much less in return if they wait till the offseason, or worse wait out a strike, and then need to trade them.

All he’s saying is he’s not going to literally trade Soler for a bag of balls and Lowe for a study cadaver just to look like he did something. He expects a return. To which I say, well…. duh.

The need for LH bat article that Fletcher wrote yesterday was interesting. I didn’t realize Kole Calhoun was the last legitimate, consistent LH power bat the Angels had. Sheesh. Little stuff like that that’s easy to overlook in a poorly-run org.

I’m for Neto to TB trade. Maybe playing close to home and for a contender will get Neto’s head screwed on straight. Remember that “core four” game against the trash cans?! This weekend will pass and there will most likely be just one left on the team from that “core”.

You’re still carrying the Shores flag, eh? Virtually all of the industry thinks that was an Angels overpay. Still not sure what you’re seeing there, Rex. He doesn’t pass my starter eye test. The BTV valuation reflects what he is: a likely reliever on the Chris Cortez model, with inconsistent command and pitch efficiency that blocks him from being anything but a five and dive guy.

The sim views him as similar to Zeferjahn and Ryan Johnson, or alternatively, Meckler and Peraza. I doubt Baltimore would even want him in the deal.

Put simply, unless a pitching prospect is a clear future ace which shores is not, I will throw him into a deal for three 55 grade prospects when my farm is thin. It just makes our odds of getting better future players stronger.

Johnson is a nice comp to me at least. Both drafted about the same position and Johnson is a year older and starting in the bigs.

I wouldn’t write him off just yet; the Angels continue to start him.

Angels continue to start a lot of guys before coming to their senses (as they finally did with Cortez).

He’s pitching in a cold weather league where pitchers typically dominate. He’s averaging 4 innings per start, hasn’t topped five once. He had two promising outings in April, while still getting hit a bunch that month. Haven’t seen an outing quite like they since – it was early, there was little scouting on him, batters were behind pitchers as the season was just starting.

He has a .309 batting average against in July – this is not currently working out.

Rex, Shores is like that girl you saw at the Phoenix mall when you were 15 who stopped your heart, but she’s 41 in Tulsa now, trying to figure out how to glow up the latest OnlyFans upload. You were her first fan, and still the best!

I don’t like it, either. Taking 3 out of someone’s Top 5 prospects is fun, but those particular prospects don’t excite me, with the exception of Dzierwa. The other two reek of AAAA.

Baltimore’s isn’t my favorite system, but Passan notes there’s interest, so I’m testing what’s possible.

I think Irish is going to be a solid regular at some point – he’s hitting 33% better than his league competition while keeping his Ks in check. He has a cannon of an arm and is doing fine at the corners after catching for much of his college career.

The only red flags guy is Aloy, but he has such a strong defensive foundation, there’s a utility floor there even if the whiff/chase holds him back.

Fwiw, O’s fans thinks these three are their top three prospects and this is a complete fleece job. Which shows you how divided fanbases can be.

Dzierwa seems pretty probable as a backend starter, and sooner rather than later. He was one of my second round targets in that draft, and he’s posted to date.

I’d LOVE that trade, and it would be interesting to see if the Birds went for it. Their magical new owner is apparently NOT just going to put a billion dollars on the field and that FO loves its prospects to death…. BUT a starter who will be cheap for this AND next years play off runs for a team that can’t seem to sign starting pitching? Maybe….

Dziewra is a guy I would love to have even more than those other two guys (who are good prospects too). If we can retain Maddux and intend to build up “the lab” a huge kid who already has the fastball/change up relationship figured out will be DOPE.

Expanding on the Neto trade Jeff listed above, and in light of the Angels’ three game series this weekend, I thought I’d assay the thought exercise of trading all of the Angels Big Three chips to the Brewers, who have one MLB’s top three most exciting farms (with the Rays and Dodgers), especially when it comes to what the Angels desperately need: positional talent.

Each of these trades is judged “fair” by the BTV sim, and brings a full resuscitation on the Angels farm – it’d be a top five system were such a fantasy to manifest. I also keep the top four Fangraph Brewers prospects off-limits as a bit of a constraint – but even prospects in the torso of their farm would be top three or five guys in many systems.

I’ve pretty much 100% ignored all these fantastical hypothetical trades as I’d prefer to hang onto the guys as always, but reading Fletcher’s latest column about Moz mentioning “left-handed thump”, my eyes, my heart, and my spellcheck are now on one guy- Adamczewski

Funny, I think of Adamczewski as more of a hit tool guy with good plate discipline but average thump – maybe 15-20 HRs a year.

If you want lefty thump, the Brewers have it spades. Fischer has 33 HRs in 87 games, a wRC+ of 169 and a 17% walk rate. Gallo territory.

The underrated Ragsdale has hit 11 HRs in his first 22 games of AA, with an outlandish .439 ISO and 21% walk rate and 205 wRC+. Maybe the hottest hitter in the minors., and he’s stolen 31 bags!

Blake Burke, Braylen Payne – both power lefties tearing up their divisions.

Nice to note.

Fletch mentioned six LH thumpers – he was one of them. And yeah I’d say you’re more familiar with the MLB potential than him. Here’s what he said:
Adamczewski is No. 78 overall, but he’s only No. 5 in Milwaukee’s loaded system, so they could be more willing to part with him than some of their other prospects.
Adamczewski, 21, was originally drafted as an infielder, but the Brewers moved him to the outfield this season. He was recently moved to Double-A. And he’s hitting .316 with a .979 OPS and 14 homers this season. He’s struck out only 64 times, compared with 56 walks, in 351 plate appearances this season.

He’s a good player – I was centering trades on him (figuring he’d also be available and affordable) for the last few weeks. He’s almost certainly a LF, and a fringey one, though.

I just wouldn’t project him as a middle of the lineup guy. Maybe a #2 or #6/7 hitter?

This is all high fantasy though – the Brewers aren’t going to pack up the middle of their formidable farm and send almost a dozen kids the Angels way. But I do think they, like the Dodgers, have more bats than they can possibly use, with certain profiles 3-5 kids deep in terms of built-in redundancy. The match up with what the Angels need very, very well.

I’d also like this because I already really enjoy the Brewers and this would allow me to root even more for them to defeat Duh Doyers and their payroll that’s a quarter billion dollars higher than the Brewers.

It’s the funnest system by far.

If I’m not thinking who is traded, but just picking the best package for a single trade – this one works the best for me. It’s a go for really any of Detmers, Soriano or Neto, and helps the Angels out quite a bit. There’s no pitching in it, but I love these bats for the team.

Jeff – Napoli is EXACTLY who I was thinking of re O’Hoppe. It would be so Angels if he figures it out in the minors and then spends the next 12 seasons raking against the Halos.

When Moreno forced the Napoli trade, he was coming off his third straight season with an OPS+ of 115 or better and at least 20 HRs per season. He was a beast, and it was only too clear what the team is losing. O’Hoppe is ice cold up and down his statcast profile. It’d be quite the zombie resurrection if Texas could bring that frozen fella back to life.

Rivera and Napoli for Wells was the clear turning point for me when it became apparent that the Angels were a post-rational organization after the Stoneman sunset, no longer well-run with adult supervision, but just rushing blindly ahead on whim, grudges and emotional hot flashes.

ever since then us Halos fans have been in a constant state of “when X contract ends, we’ll have money freed up and be able to finally get X” Can’t think of a time since where there wasn’t at least one large contract for an aging player keeping the team from filling other holes (at least in our heads).

from the Ward deal, now the $$$ aren’t even going back into the team, just junior’s AZ real estate portfolio.

They did send him to the Texas minor leagues heat to try and thaw him.

“I served with Mike Napoli. I knew Mike Napoli. Mike Napoli was a friend of mine. Sir, Logan O’Hoppe is no Jack Kennedy.”

The real difference is that Napoli was already producing at or above league-average levels before he left the Angels.

O’Hoppe wasn’t. Some have tried to portray his departure as a major loss for the franchise, but the objective performance data simply don’t support that characterization.

C’mon! Napoli was no defensive whiz but he was light years ahead of O’Hoppe in terms of offense. O’Hoppe has been trending downward for the last two years. Moz assessed this wasn’t just an off-year and it’s time to move on.

If he resurrects himself somewhere else, then good for him. But you can’t say the Angels didn’t give him a chance (you could argue differently for Napoli as he was fighting for playing time against Soth’s pet). Logan was the full-time catcher since he was acquired. The vets signed were clear backups and were of no threats. Even his apparent heir was shipped out (Quero). The position was his, there was no competition. And he just didn’t deliver.

I don’t think it’s a major loss bc he was done here. But it would be so Angels if he turns it around after I sent in the minor leagues. With some good coaching.

O’Hoppe is one that hurts a little as he checks all the boxes for me in terms of character, humility and likeability. Super good dude, that just couldn’t get it figured out here. I have huge reservations on his ability to shore up his defense and overall game in general. I think a change was his best and perhaps last good baseball option.Like Napoli, I’ll root for him when I can.

A friend of mine played with Jack Howell and chacterized him as a really good guy who just tried too hard and couldn’t relax enough to let the game come to him. I don’t know any details about O’Hoppe, but in watching him I’ve often wondered if he struggles with the same type of internal battles.

pretty much everyone on the club I’ve been around the last 10-20 years in ST has been a “great guy” and “good dude”

I can count on one hand the ones who I didn’t think were.

  • I’ve blasted Servais every time his name comes up around here.
  • Albert was…………. complex.
  • There’s one other guy that brushed me off once I won’t mention his name (but he beat Steph Curry in a game of HORSE). I don’t blame those that do though – being a 65 yr old fan boy around MLB players isn’t the coolest of looks

And that’s my list.

Jeff, I’m sure you’re starting to note a few a-holes and correctly just keeping it to yourself.

99.5% are “good dudes”. Heck, Rendon was a “good dude” to me. Arte was a “good dude” to me and took a picture of me with my daughter in 2005.

A good story of a “good dude”? I caught Mike and Albert to pose for a photo with my 3rd ex-wife, and was about to snap it when I was tapped from behind and a voice said “give me your camera and you get in the picture too”. I hurriedly joined the three of them too, turned around to see who had my camera and it was the 2010 AL MVP. “good dude” lol

Best dude ever? Taylor Ward. Runners-up – Wash and Lorenzen.

But to your point, Hop was awesome around fans.

I remember when Jack Howell hit a home run at Yankees Stadium with a broken bat. Vin Scully was calling the game as it was a nationally TV game. Scully couldn’t get over how Howell did it.

In A ball last night, Hayden Alvarez smacked 2 HR and Big Boi Davalillo walked it off with a HR.

Bremner and Alvarez are top 100 prospects, cases can be made for Slawinski and Jordan as well. How many more will we aquire this deadline 🔮🔮🔮

My current best guess is we hold onto Neto and trade Detmers, Soriano, Adell, Soler, Yates, Suter.

My analysis of the Hop trade in six words:

Twas a salary dump, nothing else.

So little salary was actually dumped. If true, very little pain avoided for very little gain. I see it more as a signal to the other teams, we’re open for business.

yeah it wasn’t much = $846K.

But it was a salary dump.

the alternate explanation that Angel Arredondo will be contributor is much more far-fetched.

An 1.8M salary dump? OK. Clearly you are on to something big.
