Given how competitive the market is, you’re not likely to see any meaningful Angels trades before Sunday/Monday anyhow, because they’ll be fielding and evaluating tens of offers before then, so the lack of current action means very little one way or the other.

But you’ve made your POV very clear, several times a day – the Angels aren’t going to do squat. Others here are going to have their fun contemplating alternative futures, and why shouldn’t they?

From the Dodger POV it’s a no-brainer. I don’t know anything about the players the Angels would get. But if I’m the Tigers I’m thinking there is not enough return. I didn’t realize Mize’s contract is also up and is a free agent in 2027 same as Skubal. But I think Mize makes 1/5th the salary of Skubal and maybe the Tigers could pay Mize.

Looking at this another way, if I’m the Tigers would I trade Mize straight up for Neto. I don’t think I would. Or at least I would offer Mize on his own and try to get a high level prospect at least. For me, a 1 for 2 swap would be hard to sell to the fans.

Mize has been injured and wasn’t even a trade option until his recent return. He’s a free agent in the offseason. There’s no remote universe where 2 months of Mize = 3+ years of 3-5 WAR annual Neto. That’s like a 12 WAR for 0.5 WAR swap!

It’s been reported that the Detroit have been closely evaluating the SS market. Their prospects are about 2 years out. This is more than what they probably think they could get for two months of Skubal/Mize.

That is a fun idea. Not sure the Tigers wouldn’t want more near ready prospects in their deal for Skubal – but it’s definitely intriguing. They definitely are good enough they don’t need to fire sale, and maybe they think they can compete in the next three years. Definitely well thought out though. Fun.

Given the amount of value that Neto possesses at the moment – probably more than Skubal to various degrees – they could always flip him in a coming offseason for their own haul, if they simply want 3-4 prospects instead.

Neto will have a ton of value in the offseason for whoever holds him. Skubal won’t.

Great point. I always have to keep the trade value in mind – and sometimes think if it’s a fit. He’ll have value for a few years – maybe a little less – but they get good value for now and it’s kind of like a short term option.

I think there are two distinct possibilities:

The Angels go on a fire sale.
The Angels do essentially nothing.

If they trade any one of Neto, Soriano, or Detmers you have to trade them all. There is no point in doing anything in between.

Something to remember in these trade scenarios. If we lose most or all of the 2027 season – the prospects who have not been up have not started their clocks. If they do as expected, players who have their clocks started will be closer to free agency. So in my opinion, prospects should be given a premium in trades – which likely is not reflected in the trade simulators as it is not the standard algorithm.

It’s like Ohtani. The Tigers NEED to trade Skubal for all they can get. They can QO Mize if they want. But they are clearly not cruising to a WS here, and getting nothing for Skubal on the off chance of an off chance that you will limp into the play offs and then magic ballz your way to the championship is dumb as fk. They are a young team. They have talent on the farm. They can sign another FA starter. They can be good for a few years to come… or they can try to keep Skubal and look like a team that will “go for it” while the Yankees and Doyers laugh at being able to just pay Skubal instead of give up prospects and then pay Skubal.

The Cardinals were known for developing players. It is a key component of any plan that involves acquiring young talent and molding them into Major Leaguers.

The Angels are the opposite. They are among the worst at developing players. That is one of the reasons why Perry kept drafting college players out of the draft – those guys came “developed” (at least way more so) by their programs as opposed to high schoolers that the Angels would have to develop.

So I cannot help but wonder if Mo has taken stock of this situation. He could trade away everything, end up with a bunch of high level talent and it wouldn’t mean anything in this Org. In the Cardinals Org – those guys would be the key to a long term rebuild. But if the Angels dont meaningfully develop players such that they succeed in the Majors (not in the Minors) then it is a fools errand.

Mo has a big job ahead of him but I hope part of it is the revamping of player development to bring in quality people with a proven track record of taking players from rough but talented to solid Major Leaguers.

Your first 4 sentences here are right on target Fan. It is not that we need to “trade everyone.” Some of our guys really need to be kept (that would include Soriano ; imagine how good he’d be if he were in the Rays or Cardinals system !). What we need to do is totally revamp the way young players are selected, introduced and developed from Step 1 all the way through their first two to three years in the Bigs. This is the key !

This is also an important concept to grasp, one which I have thought myself many times as people cry for a fire sale :

In fact, that comment is very similar to a couple posts/comments I made yesterday countering the “trade everyone” philosophy….

Jack – in theory, and in a vacuum, I generally agree. Or if this team was anywhere close. But circumstances affect my ultimate analysis.

As we have seen, this team has been and is going nowhere. It has been going nowhere for a long time. With or without these players like Soriano, Detmers and Neto, this team has not performed and continues in that direction – actually getting worse. We are looking at losing over 100 games this season. The status quo (holding onto assets like Ohtani while trying to “compete”) has not worked. This is absolutely clear.

We are also about to go into a lockout where these players are likely a) not going to play for a full season and b) the team will likely lose a year of control over these players.

Unless we have an owner who is willing to spend on All Star caliber free agents (we don’t), there are so many holes to fill that players like Soriano, Detmers and Neto will continue to be surrounded with below-replacement value players which is a de-motivator (which I think we see in Neto). Without a solid surrounding cast, these guys have not and cannot make that much of a difference in a team sport.

All of these players like Detmers, Soriano and Neto will get more and more expensive. With as many holes as the Angels have it makes no financial sense to continue spending to keep these guys.

This Org needs a reset – a complete change. The stench of the last 12 seasons is not going away by staying put and not making big changes.

A well orchestrated rebuild by a baseball person who knows what they are doing can pay big dividends sooner than you may think. Look at the White Sox. And before that the Orioles and Tigers. The key is it needs to be well orchestrated.

I would prefer to be in a rebuild than continually hearing “compete” and retaining these players and watching the team lose 90+ per season.

Taking all of this into consideration I see trading away all the assets for young talent as the team’s only possible route forward. I agree it’s not ideal and I wish the team was in a different position. But I have concluded it is the only shot the team/Org has and it’s a Hail Mary.

Well, this comment kind of goes against the first post you made up above… But you make some good points here too… Certainly the lockout likely represents losing a prime year of Soriano and Detmers etc… Actually, I amend that comment, since if the guys are not playing they are not getting “wear and tear” on their bodies, so you are not really “losing” anything there…

I would add, if Arte loosens the purse strings maybe Moz decides to extend Soriano ? If I were him and it was feasible I would do it ! So, I don’t think we have to trade Jose necessarily…

But IF Moz decides to really give up on the idea of being good in 2028 or 2029 then your plan makes sense… but there is more than one way to skin a cat…. I mean, maybe in the real marketplace Moz does trade Neto and does trade Detmers but the offers for Soriano are just not fair or reasonable…. Should he allow a rival GM to screw him and trade him anyway ? I say no. You still have to make “good” trades…. Typically, if someone has value; say Neto, who still has three years of team control, then you SHOULD be able to get value back…. That means highly rated minor leaguers, if not proven MLB talent plus moderate to high unprovens… My point is, you can’t just give away a young stud like Soriano for cheap… of course teams are not gonna want to give you their Top 1-2 prospects… but if they don’t you have to play hardball and being willing to say “Sorry, no deal.”

As for the comment that two posts conflict, I am able to hold two divergent thoughts at the same time and feel comfortable with it. The first thought is that the Angels lack good player development and that I hope Mo improves that. My second thought is that under the circumstances, I think there is no choice but to clean house, even though it is not ideal. It is a Hail Mary.

Most true rebuilds have a five-year window in mind. So the target would be something like 2031. With that type of timeframe, the players you are concerned about are meaningless to this team. In that timeframe, none of them are likely to be on this team anyway as they would leave as free agents. I see nothing to suggest Arte would open up the pocket book to keep these players.

I agree with 71. History is littered with failed businesses that built a great product but didn’t know how operate. The Angels have many flaws, but the most glairing is probably in their failure to develop talent. Good organizations have a plan and methodology that they stick to by consistently executing on it. Drafting or aquiring talented people is only the start.

Went to the game last night with my family. My son liked watching the pregame lion dance and we got our mid game ice cream.

I had a perfect view into Arte’s suite. He wasn’t there. Molly and then me other person were. She had a great view of the tarps off guys, who provided more entertainment than the team.

Angels relief pitching:

The Angels have 13 saves on the season. (Note, the least amount of saves by a team in a full season is the Red Sox in 1987 with 16).
Since Jordan Romano was released on April 27th, when he had four saves and two blown saves (the two during the Yankees series in NY), the team has only added 9 saves in 3 months. Since Aprl 27th, there have been the 9 saves, and 17 (!!) Blown saves. Thus, the team save rate is only slightly better than 33%.
If the save rate had been a reasonable 66.6%, that would have added 8 o 9 more wins.
Despite the poor defense, the abysmal performance of Soler, Lowe, Moncada, O’Hoppe, and the injury to Kikuchi, the team would still have a reasonable chance of a wild card slot, or at least a .500 season.

For whatever reason, Romano has been great with the Rockies, 7 games, 6 finished 4 saves in 4 save opportunities, 1.35 era.

It’s a long way since
Rodriquez had 62 saves for the Halos in 2008.

The Angels have had 26 save opportunities since releasing Romano, more than some “good” teams. A stud closer probably could have saved at least 20 of those 26 save opportunities. That would mean a record of 53-55 right now. Right in the thick of the division winning race.

Agree with that but pinning Angel failures on the lack of a Closer is a small part of the overall teams faults. Angels need an affordable, home grown Closer to step up vs investing in an expensive one. If we had Mason Miller, do you believe we would be serious post season players? I’m not talking about backing into the final WC spot. I’m talking about competing for the pennant. If it is the former, that is a waste. Better to spend dollars to enhance the other positions, first.

Speaking of cheap home grown, look at the Indians, Cade Smith. MLB leader in saves. Closers come and Closers go.

I have been struggling to understand the math.

The stat that everyone was saying a couple days ago was that we had just lost our 9th game when leading after 8 innings. But we have 19 total blown saves.

Is that because we’ve managed to go on and win 10 of those games after blowing the save because we didn’t lose it outright and managed to win in the bottom of the ninth or in extras?

Thanks for the graphic. Both Minasian teams are well below the line. As to other notes, while Tampa and Milwaukee are great outliers, until they make a World Series in this era it doesn’t matter much. The Halos should perhaps hire someone from the FO from those teams though.

Change is needed to present the Dodgers from doing what they have done. Signing multiple league MVPs in free agency does wonders for your consistency. You of course need quality pitching to go with it which they had.

As the Halos don’t have a true closer and went out of their way not to pay for one, are we supposed to be surprised when they lose these tight games in the ninth? Wasn’t that part of the equation via Perry’s moves?

Well, let’s see what they do in the next week. Keep in mind to make trades you need good offers made to you.

Minisian got burned in the Stepenson singing, 3 years/$33 million. And the all pitcher draft class hasn’t produced much. And Jansen headed for Detroit. So he went the patchwork route, and overpaid for veteran stopgaps, which has been a bust, and essentially sealed his fate as the GM. And teams destiny this year.
It’s fascinating how a franchise like Tampa Bay can continually produce winning teams, on a modest budget.
I think the trade the Halos should make with the Rays is front offices.

This one trade here is proof positive that the Trade Simulator is total bullshit and should never be relied on as an indicator of what trades are logical and/or fair. Two of these dudes are not even in the Top 100 Rankings !! Only guy worth giving anyone good up for would be Theo Gillen. No way shape or form Soriano should be included here !! Maybe I would consider a two for one taking Gillen if you included a Nick Martinez in the trade for Soriano…

That was just an example of the “kind” of SP talent you’d need to get back for Soriano… It could have been another dude from another org, the point is that you have to get another top of the rotation stud, or a stud position player… He is kind of old at 34, but if you gave my Yandy Diaz and a young stud pitcher I might consider it etc … I need somebody proven back in return…

They’re all posting numbers. That’s what you bet on. Does it always work out? No. But to not think there isn’t valuable equity in a deal like this is warped logic. Gillen has gotten comps of PCA, Bryce Turang and Corbin Carrol. We’re losing all these guys without overpaying in a few years. We won’t be ready in a few years. These guys all look like future contributors.

You are just assuming “we won’t be ready in a few years.” What is a few years ? Three years, four years ? I think we could look very different as an org in 2 years if Arte decides to really step back (I do have my doubts about this…). If Moz is truly given the reins and some financial wherewithal I could easily see us competing for the division in 3 or even in 2 years, especially if we keep Soriano and Detmers… Talent wise we are not far away… as I have pointed out yesterday and today elsewhere in this thread, it is the other things, the logistical and infrastructural things that need to be revamped much more than the talent, though a talent upgrade in the minors is also needed…

Free agent buys are not a bargain. If they go free agent and we want them – we can go get them at the market rate we’d have to pay anyways and now we have players to go with them. These guys are likely up between late 2027 to 2029.

I think this team is way shorter on talent than any of us want to believe. The next time you watch a game, freeze the screen when they show the line ups and give a point for each position the Angels have a better player at.The Angels routinely have 1 or 2 points by my count. The competition also typically has way more depth on the bench and in the bullpen.

Yes, and any of the other assets. Might even lump Adell with any of those guys. Ideally, 3 separate trades to off-load the trio, scooping up some Top 5 assets from each club. Something like that.

I actually agree that it’s usually better to do one off deals – and I’d try to get even more – I started with Neto for Gillen – and realized that on paper doesn’t work. Hence -I tried – let’s throw in another trade target – and saw Bodine out there who I knew was getting some accolades. Then I looked into Forret – and said – here’s three guys that look like they will be contributors.
