LA Angels Weekend News Crash: More Fun

I don’t know about you but I am having a lot more fun watching this team now than I was a couple of months ago. Once Mike Trout suits back up, it will be even better. Of course, there are a couple of reasons for this new outlook.

Primarily I am truly looking at this season like an extended Spring Training. The wins and losses don’t matter. Neither do the stats of guys like Jorge Soler or Kirby Yates who will not factor into the future.

No, I just look at the stats of the kids to see how they are doing. And generally speaking the kids are doing pretty well. I really love watching Urena pitch.

I went to the game Tuesday and saw two calls overturned at first base. Both were bang-bang calls and both required a ton of speed to even make close. One was Jose Siri and one was Christian Moore. Either way, speed down the baselines was not commonly seen at the Big A in recent years.

I am also really enjoying Denzer Guzman in a small sample size. Putting him and Peraza on the same diamond really improves the defense. And if they keep hitting well, we could be onto something.

Team defense has really been an Achilles heel for the Angels in recent years. If Zach Neto can figure it out and get back to his usual decent self, the Angels could have a really solid trio in Guzman, Neto, and Peraza from left to right. Better defense equals better pitching.

Yes, the team needs many more players. I personally think they should trade Jo Adell and accelerate the rebuild. These two articles are related but I really love the idea of trading Adell to Cleveland.

An outfield mix of Meckler, Rada, Raudi Rodriguez from left to right with Trout at DH and covering right field against a southpaw would be fun to watch in 2027. Rada’s defense and baserunning are elite. Add that to the youngsters on the dirt and we would have a fast, young team all around.

I also think the Angels need to pick a horse in either Soriano or Detmers and extend them now. Then trade the other horse. I would prefer to keep Detmers but he also has the higher trade value. Shipping him out would net a goldmine for the Angels as apparently every GM in baseball would love to add him.

Then again, Jose Soriano would pull in a nice haul despite his injury history. The decision to keep or trade Soriano is a very interesting one.

If we kick out Perry and put Turk’s Teeth into power, the Angels rebuild could be going full bore.

In looking at all the kids on the field and the upcoming payroll flexibility, it is fair to ponder if the Angels could be good in 2027. Yes, it is highly doubtful but it would be fun to have a young team with potential rather than the usual cast of declining veterans cashing in the final checks of their careers.

In case this is too positive, the Angels were absolutely ripped in a new player survey.

But, yeah, for a few years we’ve been clamoring for some young kids who might amount to something and to a degree we are getting them. We need Moar Kidz! and that’s where this trade deadline can be huge.

Wade Meckler is another fun story. The local kid is playing well and had a very big hit to help the Angels huge comeback on Wednesday.

I really enjoyed interviewing Meckler. He was kind of like David Fletcher in that he gave much longer answers when talking about baseball than he did when talking about himself.

Here is part one of the interview. And here is part two.

Up next should be an interview with Reid Detmers. I went to the game Tuesday with a buddy just to hang out but I did chat with my press contact for a while and was told I can get any interview I want with just an email.

From around baseball:

Dalton Rushing is a dick and the Dodgers are stuck with him for a while because Will Smith is a ways away from coming back.

More injuries for the Cubs rotation, but perhaps some help is coming. Jose Soriano?

Mookie Betts cracked his 300th home run and has really heated up lately.

Both sides keep posturing in the labor talks. The owners sent over yet another proposal with a cap and a floor and better revenue sharing.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I will work a bit both days and spend the rest of the time with my family. Never imagined I would get to spend summers near the beach in my life and taking the boy for some time digging holes in the sand is just what I need right now.

Definitely need to move trout to full time DH, that would improve the defense while keeping trout healthy.

Once a week we do this, so here we go,

No one asked me but: We love seeing O’Hoppe and Shanny coming back on the beam…Why did the team release a productive player in Madrigal to keep Moore in the majors…I do not know pitching as well as most of you, but does it seem something is off with Soriano’s arm…If you look at Yates numbers, they don’t seem as bad as we believe his pitching is, strange…The answer “Homeruns”/”Power”. Why do we keep Lowe and Soler? Or hoping they produce to add trade value could be another reason…I hope that we keep Detmers in the fold…Hall of Famers we are seeing play in 2026 are Juan Soto, Here Come the Judge (Aaron), Mr. Freeman, Mr. Betts and Mr. Shohei, Cleveland’s Mr. Ramirez, Verlander. We know we missed some, so who they? (I missed a pitcher at the end of his run, who is he.)

thanks for reading and looking forward to adding to this. 😃

Yates’ season is a strange one. Overall it doesn’t look bad, he’s only given up 10 hits but that includes 3 doubles and 2 homeruns. 50% of your hits going for extra bases is going to mean runs score. Add on top that all 3 of his inherited runners scored just makes it worse. He does strikeout a ton of batters though.

Soriano has never pitched this much in his career. He needed a start off a month ago.

At the halfway point of the season, more or less, the team has shown improvement from last year in all but their record. Hitters have produced at a better rate .239/.319/.398 than last year’s .225/.298/.397 and have averaged 4.56 runs per game over 2025’s 4.15 total. This places the Angels at average for the league.
Unfortunately, the pitching is only slightly better than last years, giving up 5.00 runs per game as opposed to 5.14 last year, The pitching staff is surrendering fewer hits and homeruns while striking out more batters, but are the worst or next to worst at putting men on with walks.
For as bad as the fielding has been this season, it was incredibly bad last year. Using BBR’s WAR defense component, last year was a -47 while this year is -14 so far. That’s not good, but it’s not horrendous either.
If the hitter’s avoid last year’s summer swoon, I am optimistic about the rest of the year. The Pythagorean W-L suggests the team is winning less than expected and should win more than last season’s 72 games.

Opinions are like A-Holes, everyone has one. Guzman is a great call up playing 3b, a black hole with rare exception in the 66 years of the Halos and we just may have caught lightning in a bottle with his playing at 3rd.

It’s no secret, the 2026 edition of the Angels is fun to watch as you never know what will happen. The downside? Some of the opening day crowd moving back in, meaning Lowe and Soler taking at bats from the players that should be in every day. Why keep players who are limited at beast. Soler while playing better this season at least at the plate is just not worth keeping a younger player on the pine or out of position. How Lowe can you get is not a good hitter, not a good fielder or base runner. Package these two for a bag of socks and play others. That’s my story and two cents worth and I’m sticking to it. 😜

No obligatory link on Trout being an AS finalist?

I’m really hoping Denzer is the long-awaited team solution at 3B, which has been a black hole of the team since Troy Glaus (or maybe Chone Figgins). The team have tried internal options (Dallas), band-aids (Alberto, Freese) and a long-term solution that turned out to be a huge bust (Rendon). It’s about time this team get lucky on a 3B.

I’ve been enjoying the additions of Jose Siri, Wade Meckler and Donovan Walton. Siri especially because didn’t he have a reputation of being a douche in his previous teams? And for someone who has that power to actually hustle for an infield hit is a welcome sight.

Dalton Rushing is this generation’s A. J. Pierzynski. It doesn’t help (or maybe it helps) that he also has such a punchable face.

This season is so meh to me I hardly post but I read everyday, so thanks keep them coming!

I’ve also thought a lot of the team, probably more than Perry and I agree.

OF mix
Trout
Rada
Raudi
Moore (keep the experiment
Meckler (I like the story for now)

IF
2B Shouid be Neto
SS should be Denzer
3B Peraza
1B Schanuel until you get an upgrade
C o’Hoppe until Flores is ready

SP Ureña
SP Detmers (only if Maddox is pitching coach)
SP Bremner is coming before he’s ready but oh well.

RP Bachman
RP Silseth
RP Natera

I think that’s how this team should roll

Trade: Adell , Soriano
Think about O’Hoppe too

There’s enough bones for a good owner to come in and spend money to improve the roster immediately at OF, corner IF and SP if they wanted to. There is some talent on in rookie and A ball, so a front office with a 3-4 year plan might turn this around if they want to. Oh well I guess

A CF’er that can field the position and get on base would be great to have. Even though Brett Butler wasn’t all that good at fielding, his ability to get on base, steal bases and avoid double plays made him valuable.
