LA Angels Wednesday News Crash: Deja Vu

Morning Angels fans. have some links or whatever.

Angels News

The Angels are back to sucking again, losing 3 in a row and reclaiming the worst team in MLB again. Why must we, as fans have to suffer? It is getting old.

What’s worse, “Gold Glove Finalist Jo Adell” ended up reverting back to “2020’s Jose Canseco jr” all over again as he has a home run bounce off of him and over the wall. AGAIN.

But hey, at least the Italian made sure that the bullpen was rested. Sam Aldegheri went 5 and a third scoreless innings giving up just 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. It is like the opposite of a Pyrrhic victory, a true silver lining in this horse manure.

And that is why my going to the game tonight is so baffling. Well, it is because it is Pride Night tonight, not that it was easy to find, as they haven’t really been promoting it. Still, at least the Angels have one, unlike the Rangers.

Around Baseball

ALS is a big deal in baseball. As Lou Gehrig day happened yesterday, Sarah Langs continues to do her work despite of her having the condition as well.

While advanced stats aren’t be all and end all, they can make it rather obvious what teams are good and what teams suck. Like this one which does wRC+ vs ERA-.

Top Right good, bottom left bad

Vlad Jr needs to eat less of his grandma’s cooking. He has more than double the amount of GIDP as he does DINGRZ.

What if every 1 run game was flipped? Well, the Angels would still suck but they would suck less.

Somehow though, they do not have any of the worst RPs in MLB this year. By FIP at least. Maybe that is why I hate that stat so much.

Ok so Adell gets benched for having the worst game of his life, by making what were genuine mistakes.

Soler loafs it around the bases like a lazy ass and nothing happens to him.

What kind of message is Suzuki trying to send to this team?

The wrong message. Adell had 1 horrible game. Send him back out tonight and let him know it happens to everyone. What about Neto when he Ks 4 times, makes an error, and get’s thrown out stealing.

Totally agree here Hobbs. Neto could have and should have been benched on at least three or four separate occasions. Suzuki has been kissing his ass all year. This is another reason he sucks…. an old school guy like Billy Martin or Earl Weaver would have benched his ass…. He is not a very smart player and has made numerous boneheaded plays so far this season…

I went to cbs sports to see if the NBA game had started. It has. I noticed there were some baseball scores. One team is up 8-0. Don’t know who, don’t care. All of those scores don’t affect us in any way. We are virtually eliminated with 101 games left and the entire season is now meaningless except for the individual stats put up by 1) my favorites and 2) trade candidates

It’s nice to we are only 7.5 games out of the wild card with 4 months left to play, but we would need to finish ahead of 9 other teams to make the playoffs so the odds are tremendously not in our favor, so you are effectively correct even if it is not a mathematical realty yet.

Soler leading off, who doesn’t get on base enough and can’t run is beyond f’ing retarded.

I hope we get smoked and I have NEVER thought, let alone uttered these sentiments.

That said, please give me a 2 hit Mike Tout game.

The preview of tonight’s game contains a great synopsis of our bullpen story

“ Urena (2-4, 2.44) most recently allowed one run and five hits in six innings against the Tampa Bay Rays last Friday. He did not receive a decision in the 8-5 loss”

There’s a lot to be unhappy about, but I look about 500 miles up to the coast to the cesspool known as San Francisco and when I look at their contract situation, I laughed hysterically. They’ve got Matt Chapman, Willie Adames, best of all Rafael diverse locked in over numerous years at 30 million each for each of those years. Although the other Minasian brother wasn’t in for all of it, there’s nothing good about having a Minasian brother in your organization.

And the negative BTV on Trout seems seriously over baked. If they wanted to move him, it wouldn’t be -70. No way. He’s going to have a solid WAR year – barring his seasonal injury woes – perhaps even at a discount to his salary if he does stay healthy. It also doesn’t take into account the marketing value and the bump he’d likely get with someone good hitting behind him. They really shouldn’t move him.

To be fair, Matt Chapman is being paid 25M per year for 5 years. Last year in the first year of his contract he was a 4.1 WAR player with a 120 OPS+. This year, he is not hitting so far but continues to play outstanding defense and has generated 1.6 WAR which is more than anyone on the Halos but Trout. So far, he has been worth 5.7 WAR for 1 year and 2 months of his contract. Current WAR value is about 8.1M so Chapman has delivered a little over $46M of value or almost 1/3 the value of is contract. He is currently on pace for 4.6 WAR by the end of this year or another 3 WAR for a total of 8.7 equaling 70M in value, or 5M less than 1/2 of the value of his contract. This assumes his hitting does not improve. For defense alone, he’ll likely exceed his contract value and if he hits at all, which is a real possibility, he could exceed that. I thought it was a good contract when it was signed and it still looks that way. With our defense, I would love to have Chapman playing 3B for us for 25M a year while we sort out the guys in the minors. The other Giant contracts, as you state though are truly awful.

interestingly (to me, anyway) Chapman’s bWAR this year in 60 games is lower than Anthony Rendon’s in 52 games in 2020, the covid year. I’m not saying I know what will happen with Chapman but it’s been 6 years since he posted an .800+ OPS. In his career he’s put up Zach Neto numbers, sometimes better, sometimes worse, but on average they’re similar. Would we be ok paying Zach $25mil a year?

Roy Hobbs

Very good points and question Eric. When considering the team make up starting last year, yes. If we didn’t have a SS last year, or one in the next year or two, but had a 3B like Neto, then yes I would for 5 years starting last year. We didn’t and probably won’t for the 1st 4 years of Chapman’s contract, have a 3B, so Chapman would be a valuable affordable asset for us starting last year for 5 years. If Neto was a 3B and Chapman played SS, then the same thing would apply. If we were just counting on his bat then no, but his defense is elite. If we had an infield of Chapman, Neto, and Peraza starting this year, that would be a solid affordable infield. Chapman’s contract would have covered us until our 3B prospects are ready. 25M is only a little over the qualifying offer.

Roy Hobbs
Super Member

A different answer to the question is that it seems as though we just start over every year with no long term plan. We hadn’t had a 3B for years and probably wouldn’t for a while so signing Chapman for 5 years for that contract would have solidified the left side of the infield for 5 years. Then this year, you get lucky with Peraza, and you have those 3 together for 4 years. They could have signed Bellinger this year for 5 years. He’s on pace for 8-9 WAR. That would allow you to trade Adell at his peak. We would still have a payroll under last years with a bunch of money coming off the books after this year with Guzman, Rada, and Moore in AAA. So in year 3, the next year we play, you have guys to play or trade, a starting pitching staff coming together, and then you add a couple of players. Now you have a team that can compete and possibly improve moving forward for a decent historical budget. In that context, for that price, it would have made a lot of sense for us to sign Chapman last year and Bellinger this year but we don’t think like that or build a team over time. This would have potentially given us a 3 year window to compete and then reconstruct after that. In the mean time, you would have a 5 year period of time to stock your minor league system. It takes smart people and some luck, but it’s not that hard. You just need to think long term and not just this year.

Solid post. 3rd base is a black hole across MLB, very few all around talent in existence. I’d be thrilled with Chapman anchoring down 3rd base here is SoCal. Giants did not expect him to suddenly turn into a .280 hitter with 30+ bombs. They had a hole and plugged it. Extended him as they had no other option to promote or trade. He’s off to a slow start but he’s looking like the same Matt Chapman to me. He’s got a no B.S. attitude and wants to win bad.

I must admit I went to bed just before the “header” last night. I see a team that (Pick one or more) is (A) fundamentally flawed, (B) doesn’t have any “heart”. (C) is already running out the string, and/or (D) needs to go back to little league and learn how to play the game correctly.

All teams participate in a Star Wars night except the Blue Jays, so what’s up with them?!?

I know the Angels aren’t having a hello kitty night this year yet the Doyers, Giants and Padres are (I’m going to the Giants and Padres ones). 12 teams are doing hello kitty giveaways this year.

I could make a comment saying how the Angels hate so and so, especially after losing out in Ohtani, or I could just go where I want when I want and spend my money how I want without trying to get everyone to go streaking with me.

With all due respect, imagine teams doing what they want (based off consumer demands) and people doing what they want with their disposable income.

I see your point, but you are using examples of things that are not covered as a protected class. I don’t agree that you can compare homosexuality to Star Wars fandom given that only one of those things has significant political and legal history.

Honest question – would you feel the same way if there was a single team that decided not to participate in Jackie Robinson day?

I doubt anything positive is going to come from continued discussion. To answer your question and to relate it to the angels and one of our best all time… Garrett Anderson didn’t want to participate in Jackie Robinson day. Not because he’s an asshole. It was because he didn’t feel worthy. I’m surprised there hasn’t been an uproar from someone (like Steven a smith) on YTs wearing his number on Jackie Robinson Day. Maybe it should just be a patch above the heart like Lou Gehrig day? I dunno and am not advocating one way or the other. Just thinking out loud how any and all can be offended, often for others that aren’t asking.

In this case, the angels are offering something but it’s not promoted enough so someone is bitching? Oh and let’s all get our pitch forks out because the rangers aren’t offering it. No thanks.

You can still go, I’ve been unknowingly. If you want the jersey you have to go through that specific link and pay for the ticket + jersey. I thought the same thing I’ve always thought when groups of any kind get together at the park, good for them. Whining about it not being attended or promoted as much as someone wants is actually very Californian now that I think about it. That quote is about spending your money where you want to spend it. I doubt every dollar we all spend goes to all the causes and things we really care about.

Anyway, we should be collectively focusing our energy on the Fuck Arte momentum right now… and in this case, his organization is offering something you’re truly passionate about. So that’s a good thing, right? And doing it the same way all other promos of the same category are done (I personally don’t see ads for any of the other 7 ‘heritage’ jersey nights or catholic family night that’s coming up). So I’m not seeing the cause for alarm here.

Every team in the state of CA offers a pride night. That aligns with how the state of California votes on pride issues.

One of two teams in Texas does not offer the same night. That reflects how that state aligns with pride issues (varying).

Conflate: to merge/combine. Don’t see how that’s weird or how you can’t see the parallels.

Separately, whining (why aren’t the angels promoting this), calling an entire organization bigots, or expecting others (especially in another state) to see all the things through the same rose colored glasses you wear is weird. To each their own I suppose. And I def know I’m weird!

I mentioned this in the game thread last night but wanted to bring it up here.

It is indefensible to me that this team does not have any sort of guideline established for when they are allowed to use ABS challenges. We are consistently burning them in the most asinine low-leverage situations.

With the team down 3-0 last night in the second inning, Jo Adell (incorrectly) challenged a call with 0 men on base in an 0-2 count. What are you trying to do there? Get the count to 1-2 so you are still behind the count with no runners on? With 8 innings left to go there is just no justification for this no matter how damn sure you think you are.

Suzuki is beyond stupid. I think we have officially reached the point where he is worse than Phil Nevin and that is saying a lot.

If you want some amusing reading, check out the DSL Angels box score yesterday. 19-18 final score. 19 combined runs in the ninth inning alone. 14 total errors. Fun reminder how young those players are… only 3-4 years removed from Little League and often play like it. https://www.milb.com/gameday/dsl-rangers-blue-vs-dsl-angels/2026/06/02/848702/final/box

Also, it looks like Bremner is back… tentatively. The whole thing screams “elbow soreness.” Kinda sucks. Should have taken Anderson. https://www.milb.com/gameday/canadians-vs-dust-devils/2026/06/02/819156/final/box

Reply to  Pineapple12

Untwist your panties, friend. I like Bremner OK. Def encouraged by his numbers when he pitches. And sure it could be an “illness” that made the team yank him after five outs a month ago and again last night… but I’m guessing not. It was more likely a recurrence of the widely reported arm soreness that shelved him at the end of last season. https://www.yardbarker.com/mlb/articles/angels_tyler_bremner_has_elbow_injury_not_pitching_in_instructs/s1_17108_42851624

Not “toxic” to put 2+2 together. If it was an illness like mono or something he recovered from, why limit him to an inning and half? Possible, but unusual.

I repeat: I like him. Was never a naysayer. Never bitched about the pick. But at this juncture: Yeah, wish that we had drafted Anderson or Hernandez, both consensus Top 10 prospects at this point, at the expense of signing LaCourse or Talon or one of the other high school arms not named Slawinski. That could change, of course. Hope it does!

Pineapple12

I want to clarify I wasn’t calling you dumb at all! It reads a lot harsher than what I intended.

Marine posted something similar about Bremner being injured yesterday or 2 days ago, I forget, and that’s a false narrative I’d prefer to squash before it grows any legs.

In this instance there really isn’t 2+2. TBW and Fletch have reported Bremner’s sickness and the fact he’d be building back up in yesterday’s start with a 35 pitch limit. Bremner and Shores are roommates and got the same illness, it all checks out. Now what is the mystery illness? That’s the question. I’d assume mono or Covid, but who really knows.

Still just a teen and the one OF I am tracking in this organization. I think he has the best shot.

Praying to baby Jesus that we end up hitting on 2/3 between Rada, Raudi, and Alvarez

That’s great, but again, wake me up when some of these Minasian picks are helping the big league club. Right now he is filling out the roster with dumpster dives that won’t elevate us above the bottom of the barrel.

I’m actually fine with replacement players while our best prospects cook in the minors. C-Mo, Rada, Bremner et all. It feels like to me, that is the most astute move this franchise can make while looking at a 5+ year plan to get back to relevancy. AM/PM just needed to stop battling for the last spot in the post-season and going sideways. Feels strongly to me, we are actually in year 2 of that method of operation described above.

I’d agree with your last sentence if Perry hadn’t rushed R Johnson to the bigs 2 seasons in a row and Klassen this season, screwing around with their development. We’ve gotten lucky that Walbert is apparently a young goat with elite mental makeup because he shouldn’t have been called up this quickly either.

You and I are on the same page with tanking and keeping all the important prospects — CMo, Guzman, Rada, Dana, Klassen, Johnson, Bremner, Raudi — down in the minors.

Let Walton, Meckler, Madrigal, Siri have their fun as we make our way to 100+ losses. As badly as I want to see Dana, I’m content giving starts to Silent C, Aldegheri, Farris

That’s true, good call. He still has rushed some folks last year and this year, Walbert. My comment was more aimed at the tact of not signing long term contracts or making trades to bring in mediocre talent to possibly compete. He’s been focusing on the guys who have fallen through other organization cracks or discards. The lack of multi-year signings and bring on key assets have faded the last two years.

If you’re a fan of baseball and life in general – how can you not love the Wade Meckler story? He just seems destined to defy the odds and continue the story. Seems like a good SI story Jeff.

I’m over Meckler already. He’ll just break our hearts like every other Halo player. As soon as a story is printed about him, he will suck worse than Moncada.

Maybe – but it’s still a great story for him to have even a cup of coffee. He does seem like the guy to never count out.

He will most likely get sent down once Moncada is back. Perry doesn’t care about talent. He just wants to justify his overspending on garbage during the offseason.

That last sentence is so true.

Sure, it’s great what “The Meck” has done in 31 at bats this season, but remember it’s only 31 at bats.

Kurt needs to play him every day and ride him while he’s en fuego.

I think we all know this. It’s just a fun gimmick in another terrible season.

Long Live The Meck and his partner in crime, Pazuzu.

A great story but probably a Reggie Willits type of player in the long run.

He appears to be a serviceable guy who plays hard and isn’t high maintenance. Good teams need guys like that.

The All Star ballot was just released and Meck is one of the three Halo OFs on it.

Wow. This is so embarrassing. Not only falling behind 8-0 and going on to lose the game and series to the hapless Rockies, but in the process Adell gives up a clown show head bounce HR….. This is surely the low point of the season, right?

I don’t know how it can get worse than this? Well, there is an answer. It can get worse by losing tonight and being swept by the Rockies at home.

Report back after the Dodgers series. It can and will get worse.

The annual Trout injury hasn’t even hit yet.

I won’t harp on Adell’s bad game defensively last night because he’s been pretty goos in that area for a couple of years.

The real problem is at the plate. A .275 OBP is horrendous. He would need to crank the power numbers way up to justify that poor OBP, but, pitchers don’t really fear him. either, if his 7 walks on the season are any indication.

Nice guy. Hard working guy. He’s just never going to hit consistently.

Like a few others, I’m just here ro see Trout (hopefully) put up numbers.

There’s not one member of the young core besides Soriano I am not disappointed in – they’ve ALL regressed.

Did anyone tell Jo it’s now June and time to hit HRs?
