LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Lou Gehrig Day

Major League Baseball celebrates Lou Gehrig Day today. Among the items being auctioned off to raise money in the fight against ALS is a Jo Adell autographed Marucci Bat.

One player that each team hopes will heat up. For the Angels it was Jorge Soler, who is said to be nursing a groin injury.

The Rangers just signed Jarred Kelenic to a minor league deal. Carlos Carrasco passed through waivers unclaimed and was outrighted to triple-A by the Braves.

Brusdar Graterol had back surgery and might miss the rest of the season. Elly de la Cruz will miss two to four weeks with his hamstring issue.

The Diamondbacks reinstated Pavin Smith from the 60 day IL.

Brandon Marsh with a 4-hit game tonight, raised his Ave to .322, 2nd in the NL. Strike out rates are down, 23%. Proving me wrong in a big way.

Fermin got sent down, that seems pretty harsh after some good performances before yesterday. They sure love killing the confidence of their young pitching prospects.

We need to give Pomeranz, Jeffjahn and Yates room to cook, bro.

Obviously the future lies with 37 year old relievers on 1 year contracts.

Probably for the best for him. The Siri signing blocked whatever slim path he had back to the outfield.

How’s Bremmer been lately? I just saw Keith Law release his top 50 prospects (very dodger glazing heavy), and saw he put Hernandez and Anderson in his top 10. In fact, I’m pretty sure Anderson has only allowed something like 28 runners on base in 22 innings or something like that.

Bremner hasn’t pitched in a month due to some illness that seemed to also zap Chase Shores, his roommate. He returns to the mound tonight, probably for 1-2 innings as he builds back up to strenght.

Hard to rate a player that doesn’t take the field, alas.

What did you think of Keith’s list? It seems like he’s getting a lot of heat than normal this year.

I mean, Law always has some contrarian opinions that deviate from consensus, as does the small team at Fangraphs. I actually value that, as the ‘wisdom of crowds” approach at other larger publications can sometimes miss outliers and pertinent observations that a seasoned scout might otherwise see in person. On the other hand, he can generalize too forcefully from one or two games that he attends where a pitcher or hitter just looked really bad due to an off day. I think his current list is more favorable to the 2025 draft class than other publications.

If you’re mostly reading bellyaching from Angels twitter or the like, I’d take it with a grain of salt. A lot of prospect hounds there only focus on one team, and don’t get a holistic view of the universe of prospects.

In your view why has Perry not brought up Moore? With Schanny going down it was the perfect moment…Instead he brought in Madrigal. I am going ???

There seems to be little reason to keep him in the minors at this point…. he would grow more as a player and person playing in the bigs. Plus, my belief is that talented kids can get demoralized if left to rot in the minors. Yeah, you’d like them to have patience and resilience but we are all human….

You didn’t ask me, but, my guess is twofold:

1.) He’s not MLB ready defensively at 3B or LF.

2.) Service time considerations.

I’m actually enjoying the patience for a change.

He was getting his teeth kicked in at the major league level last year. Too much of that and it’s demoralizing in a different way, on top of the fact we would be burning his service time. He wasn’t even drafted two years ago, so I don’t think we’ve reached the point of demoralizing him just yet.

I agree with you that it would be interesting to see what he would do in the majors this year though with some of the improvement he has shown in plate discipline. Perry might be waiting to see if he can maintain that AND get his power back simultaneously before he feels like he is ready. His improved discipline has completely zapped his ability to hit the long ball.

Yeah – he’s just 23. Seaver King and Braden Montgomery are from the same draft class, selected just behind Moore at #10 and #12 respectively, and they were allowed to marinate in the upper minors, and now they seem MLB ready and right on time.

It’s a shame they promoted Moore prematurely. If he hadn’t exhausted his rookie status, I suspect he’d be an easy top 50 prospect, right on time for promotion about now, and exhibiting a good balance of plate discipline and hit/power that might be MLB-sustainable.

It was a shame, only compounded by not nailing down a position for him to settle in. He never had the defensive chops to begin with.

I think it’s a combination of things others have said here – but I think the next time they bring him up, they want him to have regular playing time and stick. Right now, they just don’t have the ABs for him without keeping guys like Peraza and Grissom out of the lineup.

They also have him working on a few new things that are all new, and works in progress for him at the moment: adapting to LF and 3B, plus leading off.

Despite a lot of positive progress with his pitch recognition and swing decisions, Moore hasn’t quite found a consistent power stroke yet. That might not be an issue if he’s going to keep walking at such a high rate and hitting linedrives at a 30%+ rate, but he’s definitely barreling much less, and hitting pitches less into the air than one would like –

I too was surprised that he was passed over for Walton and Madrigal the past two weeks, just because he was on an absolute tear in May. But I can’t always explain why this front office makes the decisions they make. The last time he was promoted, I thought it was premature and the data didn’t justify it. Now, the data justifies it, but I have to imagine they’re trying to be patient and make sure the next time he’s called up, it’s for the rest of the season.

Lou Gehrig Day.

RIP Aunt Sandy and Mrs. Red Floyd. The terrible disease that bears Gehrig’s name has really impacted this group.

That said, the man’s life was also incredible and needs to be celebrated. He was a great ballplayer who had a family.

Not something I regularly share, but yes, this terrible disease has really impacted our community. Mrs.Teeth also has ALS, and that’s among the reasons I’m often available to comment or watch minor league and college ball during the daytime, as I’m typically at home caregiving in the morning and afternoon.

Our offense has improved with recent changes. Let’s follow up with redoing the bullpen! The elimination of Moncada and Lowe should be followed by the dumping of the BP trash as well. So long Pomeranz, Yates and Zippojahn! I’d rather ride with young guys that can throw strikes.

The 3 man team continues to shine.

Trout. 159 OPS+ 2.5 WAR
Peraza. 131 OPS+. 1.8 WAR
Neto. 117 OPS+. 1.6 WAR

Unfortunately, the rest of the position players are pretty bad with the next highest regular being Nolan Schanuel 98 OPS+ .5 WAR. The rest are much worse. The 3 above are our real core at least for position players at the MLB level.

Other than Jeyson Horton, which DSL kids should we be following?

I’ll just copypasta this week’s BA survey of this DSL class here:

The top bonus player in the DSL for the Angels this summer is Jeyson Horton, a Dominican shortstop they gave $2 million. Horton’s lefthanded bat, contact skills and ability to produce hard contact for a 5-foot-9 hitter stand out. An athletic shortstop and above-average runner with reliable defensive actions, he projects to remain in the middle infield, whether at shortstop or second base.

The Angels signed Dominican outfielder Carlos Castillo for $1 million. He’s a polished lefthanded-hitting outfielder with a mature approach, strong on-base skills and a knack for consistently putting together quality at-bats. An above-average runner with good instincts in center field, he projects as a hit-over-power offensive player with room to grow into more impact as he adds strength to his 6-foot-1,180-pound build.

Other hitters to watch in the DSL Angels lineup include Anderson Rodriguez, a $625,000 signing with big lefthanded power, strength and leverage behind his swing as an offensive-oriented corner outfielder and Jonathan Aro, a $450,000 catcher from Venezuela with solid catch-and-throw skills, an above-average arm, good contact skills and doubles power. Dominican shortstop Juan Cespedes ($250,000) is a lefthanded hitter who should be one of the fastest players in the DSL, while Wilker Rosales ($350,000) is a switch-hitter from Venezuela who is another athletic shortstop with plus speed and good contact skills in a hit-over-power profile.

Their top prospect on the mound should be Kendri Faña, whose $530,000 bonus was the third highest of any righthanded pitcher from Latin America this year. He’s 6-foot-2, 180 pounds with a smooth, low-effort delivery, a low-90s fastball that should jump once he gets stronger and an advanced changeup for a 17-year-old.

I know most will poopoo this one too guys. But I’d do this in an instant. Neto is so a Murphy guy. They get better for a playoff run. We build our future. We still have a lot of guys to deal that could get us prepped for 2 to 3 years out. Painful yet sensible to both teams are how the big trades happen.

I believe Grayson is undervalued so I would not include him in the trade. Made would have to be a 7 win player for that trade to work.

I do agree – and I’d try to not include him. But I think to get Made – it’s going to take a sweetener. I think Made has 7 win player potential. Yes – that’s optimistic – but this dude stands out when you watch him. But remember this – our guys are now in arb years – and those deals are increasingly becoming less of a discount. So you’re paying for WAR (granted with a large control discount) once they hit arb eligible. And because they are going up -we’re likely to see less guys extending and waiting out to free agency. So 3 years of guys is just not likely in our window. Maybe one season – but we’re just not close. We have one dude in the MLB top 100 – at #50. It’s a sad state.

I get it. I do. But that prospect is the clear #1 right now. I think it’s a pretty big drop to #2. (Sorry Turks – but I do) I mean his common comp is Lindor. He’s a true 5 tool guy – and there simply aren’t many. Even MNT is a 4 tool guy.

FungoAle

I think you gotta trade those guys in individual deals. Maximize the quantity of return in addition to potential.

Problem here is giving up 3 for 1 on an Angels team that needs 1 for 3. The minors are bereft of even replacement value players and would need to fill 3 roster spots.

Roy Hobbs

Reply to  Fansince1971

I would be good with Neto for Made with something extra thrown in. It’s trading 3 years of Neto for 6 years of Made. Neto is an established 5 WAR player and Made, although super promising has yet to play a MLB game. This is assuming Made is a legitimate 5 WAR MLB player. Our window is not now, but hopefully in the next 2-3 years. It could work for both teams. If we were to trade Neto and Soriano for 2-3 legitimate players to go with what we have now in MLB and MILB, it would put us close to being in a position to be competitive in 2-3 years with the addition of a few free agents.

3 Trojans in Super Regionals – pretty cool. 7 of 12 SEC teams advance. All but Tennessee were in regional finals. It’s good for baseball 4 did get eliminated – but it shows how dominant the conference is as a whole. Now – let’s see a Cinderella win it all.
