LA Angels Tuesday News Crash

Chris Taylor has officially retired. The Angels signed Taijuan Walker to a minor league deal over the weekend.

This article is called “Why Can’t The Angels Accept Reality?”

Dylan Cease is on the 15 day IL with a mild hamstring strain. Jose Quintana is on the 15 day IL with a sprained elbow.

Left-hander Ty Blach has elected free agency rather than accept his outright assignment to Triple-A Iowa. Austin Slater has also elected free agency. So has Craig Kimbrel. So has Luis Garcia.

Left-hander Erik Sabrowski is on the IL with elbow inflammation.

Why does he not like Peraza. Let’s put our .214 hitter up 3rd.

I don’t understand the Peraza hate at all. With Grissom there is at least a path to making it make sense.

He doesn’t strike out – only 9.7% K rate this season. At the very least, there is a chance for productive outs.

His BABIP is an unbelievably low .218 as well. I understand the lack of power is part of that but that’s still low and his average should come around.

That’s quite the quick move – very interested to see how he’ll do at this much more challenging level.

Also wondering if Munroe is not far behind. He got a call-out in BA’s prospect hotsheet this morning (profiling the hottest 20 prospects in the MiLB each week):

5. Jake Munroe, 3B, Angels
Team: High-A Tri-City (Northwest)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .438/.526/1.125 (7-for-16), 5 R, 2 2B, 0 3B, 3 HR, 3 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO, 0-for-0 SB
The Scoop: The Angels drafted Munroe out of Louisville in the fifth round last year. After a brief 12-game debut with Low-A Inland Empire following the draft, Munroe made the jump to High-A Tri-City to begin the season. He has impressed so far, walking more than he’s striking out while hitting for power. The righthanded-hitting third baseman put on a show last week, launching three home runs and reaching base in all five games. Munroe has a chance to develop into a second-division regular, and so far he has shown strong contact skills, approach and power.

The next 4 series are fascinating.

6 games against the 2 best teams — Rays and Dodgers.

6 games against the 2 worst teams — Tigers and Rockies.

We could create some serious distance at the bottom of the standings.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Perry Minasian is the worst general manager in baseball today, maybe ever, but the worst trade in recent baseball was San Francisco taking on $311 million of Rafael Devers while trading Kyle Harrison, who is kicking ass in Milwaukee and James Tibbs, who has become one of the Dodgers best prospects. When I think of that, all I can say is ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Especially if we consider the fact that Devers was supposedly a malcontent in Boston. Personally, I don’t blame him for being offended that the Red Sox brass wanted to kick him to the curb as their 3B and have him DH while installing the newcomer Bregman. If I were him I would have felt disrespected. That said, the Giants had to be aware that there were at least rumors of him being a “selfish” player. That makes the risk of taking on that contract that much more appalling.

It’s approaching RenDone level bad. The Devers contract is longer and it didn’t contain the prospect haul.

The only other reason I could think to hire another Minassian when you have no experience yourself is that word on the street was they are all good at fetching coffee for their bosses.

Three thoughts stemming from last night’s ACL box score, the only minor league game on the schedule:

> Taijuan to the rescue. Pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit ball. Clearly that will translate identically in Anaheim.
> TJ Ford, the life-long Angels superfan and spark-plug-like, 160-pound OF we drafted last year out of the Georgia prep ranks, is off to a fine start for his pro career, hitting .333 over nine games with a pair of doubles and a triple.
> I hope 19-year-old Cuban OF prospect Anthony Santa Cruz de Oviedo makes it Anaheim soon… not just for his intriguing power bat, but to see how “Santa Cruz de Oviedo” fits on a jersey. Maybe they shorten it to SCdO.

“MLB insider Bob Nightengale shared his thoughts about the Trout trade rumors in an article published on Sunday. He shut down the possibility of the Angels trading Trout.

Nightengale explained how Trout is signed to a 12-year, $426.5 million contract that has about $160 million remaining on it. He said it is very unlikely that an MLB team would be open to taking on Trout’s full contract, and the Angels are not likely to be open to remaining on the hook for the contract if he is traded.

“No, Trout will not be traded. He has zero interest in waiving his no-trade clause. The reality is that with about $160 million remaining on his contract through 2030, no team would even touch him unless the Angels ate nearly three-quarters of the contract. And that’s not happening,” Nightengale wrote on USA Today.

Trout has stuck by the Angels for his entire career, despite the franchise’s 11-season playoff drought. Even though the Halos are currently heading back in that direction, it seems Trout is remaining loyal to the franchise.”

“He has zero interest in waiving his no-trade clause”. And that sums up what I have always said on this issue : Trout does not get traded unless Trout wants to be traded”. And with young kid in Little League, school, has friends, etc., the Trouts may not want to uproot him and might just enjoy living where they are.

Concur, it’s all Mike. No contract is truly un-tradable. Big fan of Trout but the one thing that disappoints me is his failure to put the organization on blast. He’s been a little too settled, accepting the norm.

I really think he likes the laid-back lifestyle which allows him to spend more time with his beautiful family. I hate to say it, but it doesn’t feel like winning baseball is his number one priority.

I’m ok with that. I believe performing well is though, just not playing somewhere else in what might not be as good of an environment so you have a chance to play in the post season.

Wander Franco found criminally responsible for sexually abusing a 14 year old but is spared any punishment.

absolutely disgusting. Feel so sorry for that little girl.

MLB will still ban him for life, I’m sure.

I agree. What’s even worse is that the girl’s mom was allegedly pimping her out.

Franco initiated the relationship. The mom found out then tried to blackmail him.

It does appear the mom was putting the girl out there, though.

Just absolutely gutted for the girl. She’s been failed by everybody. Her mom, the justice system, etc.

The angels sign these types of alot more often than others, definitely alot sooner in the season then other teams as well. Not only that, the angels start these types of players over and over regardless of how they play.

We have many players in that category (unclaimed in waivers). I understand the need to “take a flyer” on a player, but as a primary tool for roster creation?

Smart gms won’t even risk losing 1 game with a guy like this.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

Who cares if there “no financial risk” – what statistic is Perry using that tells him that Walker has anything of value to offer the Angels?

“Walker, 33, certainly made an impact in Philadelphia this year, and not in a good way. In five appearances (four starts), Walker allowed a staggering 23 earned runs and eight home runs in just 22 2/3 innings. Almost nothing was going right for him, with Walker’s strikeout rate, walk rate, and WHIP all trending in the wrong direction from last year.”

It smells like a Maddux ask. He may see something mechanically differnt this year and look to change it. I can also see this being a transition to the pen for him. He has some good stuff and in VERY short spurts could he be used to get three outs instead of a starter? Minor league deal and a lotto ticket witht a good pitching coach. This move doesn’t bother me that much

I have a hard time believing that a MLB pitching coach who is working with all the MLB pitchers, starters and relievers, and hopefully talking weekly with MiLB pitching coaches and looking at videos of MLB and MiLB pitchers on his own team has the time to find videos of other pitchers in the league, figure out mechanics differences and then suggest said pitcher to the GM in the manner of days the pitcher is on waivers. I just find that highly unlikely. Especially on a one year contract.

I think the more likely story is that Perry figured on getting a used vet to keep guys like Dana and Klassen down instead of bringing them up and down. Not like those two and others in MiLB have set the world on fire.

Perry loves to dumpster dive. He has to because he is not good at drafting.

That said, I could see Perry making a video for Maddux to watch and running it by him. There is a ton of dead time in MLB.

What you said and they appear to have never been in the same organization together. So Maddux has no working knowledge and first hand tendencies. More likely it was Perry asking the staff if there is a reason not to sign Walker. Simple as that.
