Jo Adell Won It With His Glove

Today we had Jack Kochanowicz versus Emerson Hancock. Hancock was coming off a recent six innings of no-hit shutout baseball against the Guardians. Here is today’s lineup.

Some of those Angels obviously needed to step it up offensively.

Inning 1

Luke Raley struck out and then Jo Adell robbed Cal Raleigh of a home run above the yellow line out in right. Remember when he would have bonked it over the fence for a homer?

Julio Rodriguez singled past Schanuel to right. Josh Naylor singled to left and Rodriguez went first to third. Randy Arozarena struck out.

Zach Neto homered to lead it off. 1-0 Angels!

Mike Trout bounced out to third base. His struggle continued. Nolan Schanuel doubled to left and then Jorge Soler singled on the ground to left. There were Angels at first and third with one out. Yoan Moncada struck out on three pitches. There was a wild pitch while Adell batted and Nolan Schanuel was out at the plate. 1-0 Angels.

Inning 2

Dominic Canzone struck out and wasted a challenge for the Mariners. J. P. Crawford struck out looking. Cole Young also struck out. Jo Adell flied out to right field. Josh Lowe grounded out to first base. Logan O’Hoppe struck out.

Inning 3

Leo Rivas walked. Luke Raley and Cal Raleigh both hit fly ball outs. Julio Rodriguez singled to right. Josh Naylor walked. Randy Arozarena grounded into a force out. For the Angels, Oswald Peraza grounded out to third. Zach Neto lined out to third. Mike Trout popped out to the first baseman.

Inning 4

Dominic Canzone lined out to left field. J.P. Crawford hit a ground rule double to right. Cole Young struck out and Leo Rivas grounded out to first. Nolan Schanuel flied out to left and Jorge Soler struck out. Yoan Moncada flied out to end the inning.

Inning 5

Luke Raley grounded out to second. Cal Raleigh burned up a lot of Silent C’s pitches while striking out. Julio Rodriguez grounded out to Zach Neto. Jo Adell grounded out to second base. Josh Lowe flied out to left. Logan O’Hoppe singled to left. Oswald Peraza popped out to short to end the inning.

Inning 6

Josh Naylor flied out to right. Randy Arozarena grounded out back to the mound. Joey Lucchesi came in to replace Jack Kochanowicz. Dominic Canzone flied out to Mike Trout to end the Mariners half of the sixth. Zach Neto lined a single to left. Mike Trout flied out to right field. Nolan Schanuel promptly hit into a double play.

Inning 7

Logan O’Hoppe challenged a ball call on J.P. Crawford successfully. He was right 7 out of 8 times so far this season including another successful challenge earlier this game. There is something O’Hoppe is good at. Crawford eventually walked. J.P. Crawford was hit by a pitch. Chase Silseth came in to pitch for Lucchesi. Logan O’Hoppe made another successful challenge while Leo Rivas batted and Rivas eventually struck out. Luke Raley struck out. Cal Raleigh grounded out to second.

Jorge Soler struck out swinging. Yoan Moncada also struck out swinging. Jo Adell singled on a grounder to short. Josh Lowe finally got a hit and Jo Adell went first to third on it. Logan O’Hoppe flied out to end the inning. There is something O’Hoppe is bad at.

Inning 8

Sam Bachman came in to replace Chase Silseth. Julio Rodriguez popped out to third. Jo Adell again robbed a home run, this time from Josh Naylor.

Drew Pomeranz came in to pitch for Sam Bachman. Rob Refsnyder hit for Dominic Canzone. He grounded to third for a force out.

Oswald Peraza popped out to the catcher, Raleigh. Zach Neto and Mike Trout both struck out.

Inning 9

Jordan Romano came in to pitch. Logan O’Hoppe got another successful challenge under his belt. Jo Adell robbed another homer from J.P Crawford. Damn!

Cole young popped out to second base. Leo Rivas struck out to end the game. Angels won 1-0.

Happy Easter!
Happy Jo Day!

Random prospect note : just saw they’ve sent my man Gus Campero to Rocket City to start getting acquainted Catching duties again – that makes me happy. His bat is already not having any problems at that level of course.

It’d be great if Gus can get back to The Show as a Catcher sooner or later.

Decided to grab a ticket for today’s game, partially to serenade Jo with MVP chants, and looks like I’ve lucked into Klassen’s first MLB start!

I love it even though I would have given Johnson a second chance. He was probably pumped for his first start and maybe would have been a little better today. But will never know. Go Angels Go Klassen

Good, I am glad Luchessi is gone. I did not have any faith in him. Was holding my breath last night while he was in the game….

I have watched the videos. What a game for Jo! He has worked so hard to become a good right fielder. I wonder how many times in MLB history a player has robbed 3 homers in one game?

I was wondering the same thing. I’m guessing it’s a record.

It was certainly the greatest overall outfield defensive performance by an Angels outfielder in a single game.

Never. 4 robs in an entire season by one player is the record by Tatis Jr. Jo got 3 in one game!

I am so happy for Jo that the hard work he has put in over the last three years has started to pay off. When he came up he was nothing other than an embarrassment in the outfield.

Now he is arguably one of the better defensive outfielders in the game. It is a testament to his character and his dedication.

MLB is probably researching this. Adell’s three home run robberies may be first in mlb history, for one game. The last one he caught was a miraculous.

Unconfirmed reports were received that the Anaheim Police were called to Anaheim stadium for three reported thefts.

It’s wild that if Jo hadn’t had his game tonight we would all be talking about how O’Hoppe is the ABS Jedi.

Does anyone know what his final count was on overturned calls?

Ish was wild. My first game in person with ABS. It’s so dope.

Those were ALL really big as well. Alot of people don’t understand that the art of the ABS challenge is not just winning them, but calling and winning them in the right spots. Down or up by four runs in the 7th or 8th with two out and nobody on is not when you need those… but Logan called several in key spots with runners on and Seattle threatening to tie the game or take the lead. These were all really important and strategic calls by O’Hoppe.

ABS challenges are in the box score now. Looks like Logan challenged four times and won all. The box score doesn’t show what innings the challenges were made.

Listening to people “kevetch” about Suzuki’s decision making vis-a-vis our BP is already tired. Our BP sucks. Period. It will be a total crap shoot for the entire season. A total roll of the dice given the talent level – or lack thereof and if he’s proven right at least 51% of the time, we should consider ourselves fortunate. MoFos acting like he as the 2002 BP to choose from of Rodriguez, Donnelly, Fuentes and Percival. This BP is duct tape and white glue.

When did Trout have his last hit? Let’s talk about that.

I actually think the pen will be quite formidable once Joyce and Yates come off the IL.

Romano, Pomeranz, Silseth, Bachman, Zeferjahn, Joyce, Yates.

Coming off the IR is an “event” that does not signify the return to full athleticism. I’m still not convinced Joyce won’t require surgery. Full effort pitching on every throw is not a recipe for a long healthy career.

Great win last night, but this remains a team that has zero margin for error and requires extraordinary performances (eg. Silent C and Adell) to win. It’s fun when it happens, but it doesn’t alter the reality of what Perry constructed.

Agree with you here Bluto. Last night was great, but it was a miraculous win. This will not happen consistently. Without upgrades this bullpen will lose us ALOT of games.

Both Pomeranz and Romano lack late inning shutdown stuff. Compare our pen to say Seattle and we are very, very lacking. We have been lucky so far not to have seen a blown save. But don’t worry, they are coming with those guys …

I’m more comfortable with Pomerania than Romano, although this is a low bar for Drew.

Yeah, the bullpen is like pulling teeth. Frankly, we were lucky to win last night, and if not for Jo we would not have. Their batters crushed several pitches off our pen… Had it been a mid summer night those would have been 3-4 rows deep in the stands and even Jo couldn’t have saved us.

Every time Pomeranz comes in I can’t watch, I have to look away. And despite his unblemished record as closer so far I am not confident with Romano. He has been dancing through the raindrops. His stuff is not closer stuff. We will be out of the race pretty quickly if Kurt continues to rely on Pomeranz and Romano to hold 1 and 2 runs leads late. We need Joyce back. And we need to move Silseth to a role in the 8th and/or 9th. Of course that weakens the 7th, but that is another question….

Everyone enjoy last night for a couple hours more because we are gonna get slaughtered today. Castillo vs Johnson is not a matchup you want.

I can’t believe I had the privilege of being in person for the Jo Adell game. What a fucking masterpiece.

Icing on the cake is this was the first game I wore my brand new Neto jersey and he hit a lead off homer to surprisingly win the game.

My two favorite players were nails tonight.

Same, dude. Same. I honestly wasn’t feeling super excited to go today. I told my kids that even when you go to the ballpark to see a bad club, you might see something you’ve never seen before. My 7-year-old was freaking out about Jo—insane. I’m so grateful.

So much great content coming out of what will now be forever known as the Jo Adell Game.

We’ve seen some historic feats in the last 15 years with Trout and Ohtani, and I will confidently say we’ll never see another 3 HR robbery game from one player. Truly a once in a lifetime performance!

Robbing three home runs in a game requires a pitcher than will give up three home runs in a game.

This might become a regular occurrence at Angels games this season! 🤣

Where did this narrative originate that any players were “mailing it in” ???

It seems that people conflate lack of talent with perceived effort.

I have never accused these players of not trying or not caring. Mike Trout is their on the field leader and sets a good example that way. He has always hustled and not been afraid to put his body on the line. It is one of the things that is not talked about enough when people discuss him and his career. You never see him dog it running to first etc.

It is also clear that they care about and even love eachother (see Logan hugging Jo at the end of the game last night)…. The issue is that we lack the leadership in the front office and the intelligent mapping of our course. We are a ship without a competent Captain.

Wow, missed a great game. One of those, “I remember when” games. Old fashion 1-0 pitchers duel. Cracks the Mariners nuts even worse with Jo snagging a homer robbing hat trick. Nice.

It may have been commented elsewhere but on the last home run robbery, great job by the fanbase for not trying to catch the ball when it was clearly in the fan territory. There were a couple blue jerseys in the vicinity but thankfully they were Modelo’s and not Mariners.

Halo fans: I’m a very old dude. I’ve seen a lot. I have never seen a guy rob 3 HRs in one game. That was insane. Remember when we didn’t trust Adell’s routes and ability to play in the outfield a few years ago? He always had a cannon for an arm, but everything else was suspect. No more.

Apparently the record for robbing HRs is 4: in a season: Tatis, Jr.

Adell has 3 just in one game.

As Dick Enberg used to say: Ohhhh myyyy!
