The Athletic today published their results in the annual “MLB Hope-O-Meter” poll (“Ranking fans’ optimism in 2026 for all 30 teams”).

The Angels fanbase comes in at #29. 5.7% of fans are optimistic (down from 11.5% in 2025). Roughly 19 in 20 are pessimistic. Only the Twins fanbase is worse, at 4.3% optimistic.

To put the results in more perspective, the #28th team on the list is the Nationals. Their fanbase is 24.2% optimistic. That’s a steep drop from #28 to #29.

For those of you on the receiving end of hopium pushers trying to hector and bludgeon you into on-your-knees submission to front office PR flackery, realize that they’re representing a radical fringe much smaller in size than Bigfoot truthers, and just a notch above flat-earthers.

The Pessimists are a tribe, and they’re very likely your tribe, CtPGers. At least you can always find your people at this neighborhood bar!

Son: Dad, I think the Angels are going to suck this year.
Dad: Son, you have to be more positive.
Son: Ok. Dad, I’m positive the Angels are going to suck this year.

Well, I guess this new scientific data proves you and others are right about this team. Us radicals will have to concede defeat. Where do I dump all my Halos gear? Should I burn it? Or just dump it because even the homeless (who read the Athletic) will not want to support this trash team!

I find it really funny at how mad you get at people on this site for being realistic about the team. Please never stop.

I find it really funny that you spend time watching a team you don’t like or think is any good. In fact, I bet you root for loses now. Keep it coming.

I don’t like the Angels, I love them. Even when they’re bad. Loving them doesn’t mean that I’m blind to their lack of talent, organizational vision and leadership. You can love something and still see it for all its faults.

But wait a minute. So am I! WTF! These Angels be polygamists?! I’d expect that from the SLC Bees but not my Angels! 🤪

Its always the ones closest to it that can’t see the glaring issues obvious to those outside. Let’s create our own First Wives club.

Or….you could try a different approach?

You started commenting on this site in spring training this year, and within the first 48hrs you were calling the community “complainers” and “whiners”. You’ve called the community members who discuss prospects here “wannabe scouts”. You’ve disparaged those who talk stats and analytics. You’ve mocked the “realists”. And as time has gone on, you’ve turned to flat out namecalling and insults – calling the community “bozos” etc.

What’s ok to talk about, EHC? What meets your approval? And more importantly…at this point, why should any of us care?

I have access to your comment history, and within five comments, nearly everything you’ve posted here became a running monologue on the site’s perceived negativity. You’ve been antagonistic from week one.

You’re like a guy who wanders into the neighborhood bar, complains about what’s playing on the jukebox, complains about the beer selection, and tells the regulars to STFU, and stop complaining.

Meanwhile, there are optimists that we all get along with – Pineapple12 is one. He gets good-natured teasing for his improbable predictions, but he also doesn’t shove his optimism down others’ throats or kick off each comment demeaning the intelligences of others or with implications that diehard fanatics here are lesser-than himself.

Here’s the deal: if you call folks names here, or keep haranguing people for their opinions on the club, your comments are going to get deleted. If it persists, your account is going to get paused. Eventually you could get IP-blacklisted.

In short: play nice. You’re new here, and you’ve been acting like a jerk. There’s a culture of complaint here – it’s tolerated, because Angels fans are long-suffering. If you don’t like it, then keep it to yourself. Or move on.

In MLB, they’re all short kings now.

I checked the height of every hitter against their past listed heights.

Due to stringent ABS measurements, MLB lost the equivalent of 3 Aaron Judges.

tonight we get our 5th starter so we can have a great discussion of just what we have with our rotation. It’ll be all out of whack since that’s one start each and we’ll overreact. It’ll be great!

I understand trying to get pitchers to work with struggles, but why no mound visit during the sixth inning on Saturday?

At least the catcher out for a visit.

Yeah, I wasn’t happy to see Walbert left dangling in the wind so long. Worry about damage to his confidence. But I don’t know the kid so maybe my concern is unfounded.

The bullpen looked great did it’s job on Thursday and Friday.

Bullpen we know and love was back on Saturday and Sunday.

Notes from the Houston series:

— Brady Anderson is having an immediate impact and the lineup can be potent.

— O’Hoppe is not a catcher nor should he be counted on as a piece of this team’s future. Now we’re feeling the consequences of trading away Quero, jeez

— Rotation is passable, bullpen is an arson squad.

— Moncada can’t be trusted at 3rd, how much time does Denzer Guzman need in SLC?

It sucks with O’Hoppe as he is the guy you like so much that you want him to figure it out. Moncada is clearly playing his way out of the gig.

Trout is turning on pitches that he wasn’t even prior to getting injured. It doesn’t look like he’s guessing, as he’s spitting on marginal stuff while also not taking the awful swings he was last year. Looking very hitterish.

Which is good, as he said he found something out the last week of the season, and it appears to be turning into production. A fading former goat is just as fun to watch.

I like the comments on Trout. As to the other guys, it’s been 4 games. Let’s see where things are at Memorial Day.

I’d sit Moncada and give Jeimer a tryout.

if only we still had Quero. For now Travis should be starting.

Minasian never figures out the bullpen.

Hitting better but still mostly K or HR approach. Trout looks good for now until his upcoming injury.

SP is still pretty awful beyond Soriano and Kikuchi.

Cool that you came around to my way of thinking Marine !

I appreciate the support.

Also, I don’t think the starters are potentially as bad as people think. Detmers has good stuff, he just needs to be a bit more aggressive early in counts. Let’s see what MM can do with this bunch.

I also have alot of concerns about the bullpen.

Always happy to agree with you. I bet if we sat down and had a cold beverage somewhere we would mostly agree on everything. I think the internet emphasizes differences above agreement. I probably come across more negative than I am because I’m old and I’d like to see a competitive team in the lifetime.

I worry Detmers may be better suited to a shorter inning bullpen role. I have concerns we just don’t know how develop pitchers even though it’s pretty much all we draft. Between injuries and lack of development I just don’t see how we successfully fill out the rotation.

Yeah maybe rather than stretching him out to start they should’ve given him a shot to close with Jansens departure.

Agree with most of this…. As for 3B I would like to give Candelario a chance. He missed most of 2025 due to a lumbar strain but prior to that put up decent numbers with some HR power and RBI potential… In the Spring he had a few AB’s and actually hit a HR so maybe the back has calmed down. He is quite good defensively. Last year in his limited play he had zero errors and the prior two seasons had three errors total.

If for no other reason I would throw him in there for defense. He might even hit a couple doubles or a HR or two. But in this case I would say any offense is a bonus, at least for now. Just get damn Moncada off the field !!

Mike Trout is … maybe … hopefully … ready for a big season

OK, it’s four games. Everyone should take a deep breath — including us. But Trout is hitting .462/.650/.923, with two home runs, seven walks and even a stolen base. He crushed a towering 403-foot go-ahead home run on Opening Day then blasted another 403-foot laser beam the next day, turning on an inside fastball. He also started in center field the first three games before DHing on Sunday.

The plan to play him regularly in center field has been widely criticized, but maybe it is the best idea. I think back to when Joe Maddon managed the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and he basically said, “Let’s turn Shohei loose.” No sitting him the day before he starts. When Ohtani pitched, he was in the lineup. He’s a baseball player. Let him be a baseball player. Maybe the same logic will apply to Trout. Keeping him out of center field and letting him DH hasn’t kept him in the lineup in recent seasons anyway. He still has excellent bat speed, elite plate discipline and plenty of raw power. Let him play and see what happens. (And it’s not like the Angels have a better option for center field anyway.)

Let’s face it: when Trout is healthy he’s going to produce. What we’ve learned thus far is even though he was on the field, Trout really was not healthy over past several seasons.

I’m glad he’s back doing Trout things.
