LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Greatness

Opening Day has come and gone and Mike Trout has reminded us why we love him so much. It can be frustrating being an Angels fan at times but then we get games like this where we are reminded we’ve watched the entire career of a generational great.

I’m not sure which brought me more joy. Trout working a walk in the first then showing off the wheels he’s lacked the last few years.

Or seeing that patented short, quick swing launch a mammoth home run.

Hopefully I get to spend this summer showing my son what the real Mike Trout was like. Let me do that and eat some helmet sundaes and I’ll be a happy dad.

Those three walks of Trout largely came so Houston could feast on Nolan Schanuel and that proved to be the right move until it wasn’t. The blast from Nolan was great to see.

Yeah, I know I’ve been a bit lazy and turned this column into Jeff’s On SI links but I’ve been buried at work and let’s be real, I link good stuff ha ha. But most of this week’s pieces were on the roster moves and predicting things.

But there’s only one prediction piece that really matters.

As of this writing, the Angels are undefeated. I’ll take it. And just to brag I did say Soriano was perfect for Opening Day.

Today we get Yusei Kikuchi on the hill versus the Astros. I like this preview videos from MLB.

How many folks here play fantasy baseball? Should I link more fantasy stuff? At least the type of fantasies I can link on a baseball blog, anyway. FanGraphs does some good fantasy coverage and lists their favorite Angel to pick up. Kind of a surprising name.

There’s just too much good stuff today. How about the game by Detroit rookie Kevin McGonigle?

Ohtani hooked his teammates up with come cool gifts.

The type of story you never want to link. Alec Bohm is suing his parents for mismanaging his money. Never want to see a family ripped apart.

The Cubs spent some money this week. A 6 year extension for Nico Hoerner was announced yesterday. A few days ago PCA got his bag for $105 million.

And this is the coolest thing that happened all day. 109 and still heaving it.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. I had plans but now I don’t so I think I’ll smoke some ribs and watch a ton of sports. Baseball is back! March Madness is in full swing. And there are fights Saturday night. Definitely going to need food, a TV, and some family and friends.

The Incredible Shrinking Slugger: What MLB’s New ABS Measurements Really Revealed

For decades, MLB height listings were treated like dating profile stats: add an inch or two for “professionalism.” But in 2026, the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system officially turned into the league’s most honest tape measure—and the results are a game-changer for the record books.

The Death of the “Tall Tale”
To calibrate the new electronic strike zones, MLB required every player to be measured—no shoes, no hats, just the cold, hard truth. While we all suspected some “creative” accounting, the data revealed some serious league-wide shrinkage.

While Jose Altuve remained at his long-standing 5’6″, other players saw their “paper” heights vanish. Red Sox infielder Caleb Durbin saw his height drop from a 5’8″ college listing down to an official 5’6 ¼”. Further up the scale, the drops were even more drastic:

  • Gavin Lux: Slipped from a listed 6’2″ to a measured 5’11”.
  • Bo Naylor: Dropped from 6’0″ down to 5’9″.
  • Alex Bregman: Has progressively “shrunk” from 6’0″ in 2024 to his official 5’10” measurement this season.

Sure, some of these guys might have had their egos bruised when their official height dropped three inches overnight—but there’s a massive silver lining: their strike zones shrank along with them. In the ABS era, every inch you “lose” at the doctor’s office is a pitch that’s now an inch further away from being a strike. A bruised ego is a small price to pay for a few more walks.

The “Center of the Plate” Revolution
The biggest technical shift, however, isn’t just the height—it’s where the ball is measured.
For over a century, the strike zone was a 3D pentagon starting at the front of home plate. Human umpires almost always called the pitch based on where it crossed that “front door.”

The 2026 ABS Change: The zone is now a 2D plane measured strictly at the midpoint (center) of home plate.
This is a nightmare for “sweeper” sliders and big curveballs. A pitch that clips the very front corner of the plate but breaks out of the zone by the time it reaches the midpoint is now a ball. Conversely, a “back-door” slider that starts outside but hooks into the midpoint is a strike

The Verdict
The 2026 season has proven that the “eye test” is dead. Between the corrected heights of stars like Aaron Judge (whose massive 21-inch zone is still 3.5 inches taller than Altuve’s) and the shift to the midpoint measurement, the cat-and-mouse game between pitcher and hitter has been completely rewritten.

In the ABS era, it doesn’t matter how tall you say you are on your baseball card—the computer knows exactly where your knees are. With this advantage gained – we might start actually seeing real heights of players posted in college and high school.
But if they ever post a dating profile, I think those heights might be exaggerated again.

By the way, the minors experimented with a 3-D ABS – but it was calling way too many strikes.

The guys that squat in their stances, (e.g. Ricky Henderson) have bigger strike zones. But the Bellinger’s who are very upright will see smaller zones.

I was just reading a facebook thread, “who are the current players who are locks for the hall of fame?” It’s like the world has rediscovered, in just 2 days, Mike Trout. Wednesday he was remembered as once being great. Saturday and he’s MNT!!!

yeah, I’m really interested in the Angels 2027 draft and Dax Whitney. If the Angels do badly this year and get a low pick he could be available. I’d prefer the Angels do really well but if we don’t…. So last night Whitney was off, giving up 3 runs. 6 innings, 3 hits, 13 Ks, 1 walk. No decision. his worst outing of the year. I need to check out the rest of the college world, see who’s doing what.

Angels brought back Chris Taylor and Hunter Strickland on minor league deals. I guess they found no interest from the other 29 teams. https://x.com/jefffletcherocr/status/2037666692755501082?s=46

ESNP is reporting that the Angels have signed Arthur Green to a major league contract. He is expected to be in uniform tonight in Houston. From Arte Moreno’s basement, Angels GM Perry Minisian was quoted as saying: “I’m thrilled to add Arthur to the Angels bullpen. We went after him aggressively after his display in Baltimore yesterday. He’s younger than Albert Pujols was when he last played in an Angels uniform, and he throws harder than Jared Weaver did in San Diego. Kurt will use Arthur in high leverage opportunities.”

Of the signing, Angels owner Arte Moreno said “Arthur Green is family friendly and will contribute nicely to the safe environment we seek for those attending Angels games. Arthur is old enough to be my father, and we have complimentary life experiences.”

Angels executive Molly Jolly was contacted for comment, but she was unavailable according to Mr. Moreno.

Contract terms were not announced, however sources indicated a multi-year agreement was discussed.

OT- https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tiger-woods-involved-rollover-crash-jupiter-island-florida/ Tiger Woods needs to go to rehab or just not drive. He can hire a driver for 100k a year and write it off and never even miss the money.

I’m going to guess he has a pain med issue. If so, he and definitely his close confidants/ management team should know that he shouldn’t be driving! Hopefully they yank his license until he gets his act together.

Random tiger story, but I was getting off work one day and heading home to upland. My co-worker is driving and I’m in the passenger seat stuck at a red light. I look to the car on my right and who is driving? Tiger. He was in a bmw and would not look my direction. We tried getting his attention and he wouldn’t look our way. This was about 10 years ago.

Very likely he’s an addict/alcoholic. This is now the second major accident he has been in where alcohol or drugs have been involved. I say this even though the first incident involved prescription medication. He was impaired enough to know he should not have been driving. The guy is a menace on the road.

However things transpire this year it was good to see Trout have a good day with quality at bats. Hoping that we’ll see him healthy and productive.

I don’t think we have much appreciation for how brutal 160-180 games is on guy especially after 16 seasons. I never played much more than 100 games a year and 35 years later, I’m still licking my wounds.Playing in pain is such a grind on your brain that demands extreme mental discipline to push through and it turns a game that you really love into something different. Hoping to see Kiid again.

162 in 180 is brutal – wrap spring training in front of it, playoffs (not in our case), and winter ball for some and it’s a grind. Cal Ripkin’s streak is so incredible – especially doing it at SS. Gerhig’s was too, but what Ripkin did seems unfathomable.

Love fantasy baseball, so more content would be welcomed by me, Jeff. The Fangraphs list has some “no duh’s” (Acuna lol) mixed with top prospects and players ripe for a bounce back, which is where O’Hoppe lands. Hope they’re right. This was the first season I did not draft Trout, so I’m fully ready for him to have a vintage Trout season.

Fun win yesterday, lets do it again.

I love fantasy baseball but don’t personally know many people who play it so I rarely find a league to join. A few years ago I did a random league that was put together by a content creator from Instagram. That’s the level of desperation I have reached lol

Its definitely not near as prolific as fantasy football. It takes much more time invested as there’s so many more games and players. But that’s what I love about it. I’ve run my own league for 18 years now and always expect a guy or two to finally say they want out after they finish at the bottom yet again, but once March comes, they’re ready to do it all over again.

Helmet Sundaes!

What’s great is that the helmet sundae will be what he remembers the most when he gets older. Very little about the baseball.

When I was playing baseball growing up we had a Carnation ice cream parlor that we would go to after each game when I was 13 and 14. You would remove your cleats and unhook your stirrups from your heals. I remember the ice cream and the players and coaches, very little about the actual games other than significant individual moments and the enjoyment of playing.

I still remember the feel and smell of my uniform right after it came out of the dryer.

The helmets from the sundaes are what my daughter has collected when we go to new stadiums. We recently updated her room now that she’s 13 and she opted to no longer display her helmets. I completely understand, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t sting a bit.

How nice of Sho to be so generous to his Dodger teammates. Doing so many great things on/off field for his team. He is doing a fantastic job cementing his legacy for LA and while erasing memories of wasted time with Angels. I’m being too harsh, maybe he brought Trouty a chicken bowl from Yoshinoya before a game.

Yeah sure. Nice. Makes 100 million a year and buys guys a few gifts. What a humanitarian. Oh and wasted time? The Angels gave him his start, he won a couple MVP’s here. They let him do something no one else had ever tried. On his terms. His schedule. Spare me with the wasted time BS. I know it’s considered a sin around here to speak ill of what’s his name, but I don’t care about him anymore.

Ohtani got his start in Japan, not with the Angels. Every team wanted him, Halos were very lucky the NL didn’t have the DH, otherwise he would’ve been a Dodger when he first came over. Arte wasted 6 years of Ohtani’s prime providing crap pitching around him. Being mad at him for leaving and then immediately winning 2 championships is just sour grapes by you.

And regarding the watches, I doubt he even paid for them. Likely provided by his sponsors. Still a nice thing to do, and I’m sure his teammates appreciated it. Trying to turn that into a negative is frankly kinda classless, TBH.

This topic always brings me smiles. If my company sucked as bad as the Angels do and I was offered an opportunity to make make generational wealth working for a better company across town, I’d leave burnout marks in the parking lot. He was a class act here and still is IMHO.

Hey I get the too sour at Ohtani thing. It was a huge deal to me he chose my hated team across town. Thinking Judge goes to Boston, Kershaw signs with the Giants; is how I felt. Anywhere else like Toronto or SF I would still be a fan. It’s actually the LA media and cocky fans online and in the news that like to bury his red history. But I guess they have championships with him that speak for themselves.

Yeah, I get it. But Ohtani was as great as he could possibly be when he played for us. The organization failed him, so he went to an organization that does what it takes to win, while also paying him $700M that Arte could never afford. I still root for him, even if I root against the Dodgers.

Speaking SI – this Cruz is so bad defensively. I realize the sun is brutal – and it’s hard – but this is a pattern. Some team is going to get fleeced in free agency. I know every team has a group of pro scouts, but even as tooled as he is, he’d be crossed off my list. Laziest baseball player I’ve ever watched.

What a nice first day for McGonigle. I do find it interesting that here’s another 5’9″ guy playing third and seemingly ready to go at a young age. He was an 18u Team USA guy – Auburn commit – that would have had plenty of D1 coaches overlooking without the Team USA accolades. Just guessing, but I actually think the SEC guys are bigger on average than the MLB guys. Anyone know?
