LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Classic!

Welcome back, World Baseball Classic. Unlike in the regular season, our team has a chance to win this one. I caught the Team USA at Giants beatdown in Scottsdale on Tuesday with my dad. It was incredible.

Yes, another great Spring Training trip is in the books. This time we were joined by my sister, her son, and two other nephews. We had a blast and will cherish these family memories for as long as we live.

Guess who got a full media credential through the Angels? Yes, that would be me. I watched the Angels vs. Royals game from the air conditioned press box and chatted with Rhett Bollinger while my family suffered in the sun. Here’s my view of the game.

I just happened to sit behind the ABS guys. You can see them at the bottom of the picture. I was pretty mesmerized about how that system works and wrote a piece about it On SI.

Spring training is the best. So far it looks like the Angels have a decent handle on who will make the Opening Day roster but there are still some questions. I also looked at who will be on the Opening Day pitching staff.

News broke earlier this week that the Angels have not offered shortstop Zach Neto a long term contract. How much might an extension cost the Angels? Not as much as if they wait longer.

The highlight of me week was watching Team USA against the Giants. That roster is stacked. No Angels are on Team USA but there are several sprinkled throughout the tournament. Here’s how to watch the Angels players in the WBC.

One Angels prospect is already having a good start to the Classic.

Any idea who will seize the second base job this year? That decision could really shape the early part of the Angels season.

Did you guys follow my interview with Joel Hurtado? It was in Spanish so I transcribed it and broke it into segments.

Part one on his outing against the Giants.

Part two on the Angels finding him and his transition to the USA.

Part three on his rise through the minor leagues.

Part four on the upper minor leagues and his prep for the Major Leagues. Part four has video of the full interview but including the translator. This one is an easier read than watch. Then again, considering my mug, aren’t they all?

Hurtado is on the squad for the team’s Spring Breakout game. So is Chris Cortez, who I also interviewed recently.

Here is the full list:

From around baseball:

Jurickson Profar was trying really hard to live up to his contract and got a 162 game suspension. This could be good for the Braves.

Nice Guy Hall of Famer Andrew McCutchen signed with the Texas Rangers.

And, lastly, the Classic.

I will be glued to every game possible. Don’t call, text if you need me. Here is the full schedule.

How much do I love the Classic? I tried to talk Pops into flying over Phoenix and heading to Houston in lieu of our annual Spring Training trip. I think tried to do two days in Houston followed by two in Phoenix. We settled with planning our trip around the Team USA vs. Giants game when I was able to buy the tickets presale.

Sorry Turk’s – looks like they had their mind made up before camp began. After how he’s looking – they had to already have this slated.

https://www.mlb.com/news/angels-prospect-nelson-rada-reassigned-to-minor-league-camp?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

Trout is definitely going to be the everyday 8.

He still might play at the MLB level games, and minor leaguers are around the complex too, and play games also.

When they gave Rada a high uniform #, 50-something?, the writing was on the wall.

my disappointment is mitigated by knowing Mike will be our CF.

I sure am excited to see Nick Madrigal showing signs. When a 5’7″ guy is picked #4 overall – and it wasn’t considered a reach – you know he can play. I’ve always liked watching these guys that fight at the plate on every pitch. And let me say, the more I watch Rada – the more I like him for that same reason. Watching the guys that battle every pitch is why I think the Brewers are fun to watch. It’s why the Diamondbacks were fun to watch a few years ago when they made their run.

Maybe we should split this site into two sites:

1. Keep the current one for hopium driven magic thinking fans; and

2. Create “Trashing The Pearly Gates” for those of us who wish to express reality based criticisms of the Org.

That way everyone can play in their respective sandboxes without getting annoyed.

When it’s your opinion, it’s “reality based criticism.” When it’s someone you don’t agree with, it’s “magic thinking.”

How about this instead: one site for fans who wish to remain hopeful and genuinely want the team to succeed on all levels. The other site for the “assume the worst and prepare for even worse” group.

My first draft pick is Kaitlan Collins. You are now on the board.

Addressing your first point. Explain to me how the following is not wishful thinking:

The team won 63 games in 2024 and 72 in 2025. Therefore they have averaged around 67-68 wins in the last two seasons.

This offseason they lost around 10 WAR in various players including Ward and their excellent close Jansen. None of that was replaced.

So how can it not be wishful/magical thinking to believe this team could win more games than last season or not flirt with 100 losses? You would have to believe in the highly unlikely such as Trout having a renaissance and Schaunel hitting 30 HR and guys like Paris and Moore being legit major leaguers not to mention everyone staying healthy – particularly the pitching staff. It requires magical/wishful thinking to even begin to believe that can happen.

So that is the basis of my comment. I think there are two main groups here (1) reality based thinkers who engage in statistical analysis and discuss the numerous Organizational failures and (2) magical thinkers who comment mostly based on feelz.

What’s the fascination with needing to perpetually whine about people who post opinions critical of Angels baseball operations?

If you want 24/7 “happy-speak” about all-things Angels baseball, start a fanboy page on Facebook and live your dream. Otherwise, sack up and deal with the reality that not everyone around here is going to express the consistent level of exuberance you do regarding Arte, Perry, and the rest of Angels baseball operations.

You’re joking right? Me complaining? I was commenting regarding another person calling some around here and their opinions “Magical thinking.”

Sounds like the complaining started with that original post. You don’t like my opinion that there are some good things about this team? Fine.

Perhaps I should find a site where the doom and gloom doesn’t actually start until there is doom and gloom on the scoreboard. Or I could just stick around here and annoy you.

You want to use stats from last year ok – numbers ALWAYS tell the truth right? You go with your stats, and I will rely on feeling.

You “root” for the team your way, and I will cheer for them my way. You’re right – sacking up FEELS pretty good.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? NO.

And it’s not over for the Angels either. Even though… okay it might be a little over.

But I’ll tell you something. Arte Moreno has a PLAN. Nobody knows what it is. Arte doesn’t know what it is. But there IS one. Has to be. The man didn’t build a real estate empire just to—

Actually wait. He literally said Angels fans “don’t have a mercenary attitude toward winning.”

He said that. Out loud. To reporters. On purpose.

THAT’S OUR OWNER. A man who looked the American sports fan in the eye and said — you know what, these people are fine losing. They’re COMFORTABLE. They don’t need a winner, they need a parking lot and a bobblehead night and they will SHOW UP.

And the WORST part? He’s not wrong. We keep showing up.
But HERE IS WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO.

We are going to sit back. We are going to watch those standings. Every single day. With loyalty. With dedication. We are going to watch this team mathematically exit the pennant race sometime around late May and we are going to DOCUMENT IT like it’s a nature film.

Because nobody — NOBODY — watches a franchise slowly sink below .500 with more passion than Angels fans.

We are ELITE at this.

Who’s with me?

I didn’t take it seriously, I actually thought it was funny because it’s true, and it’s perfectly ok. We’re all fans of the team, we all want them to be successful, we all love baseball, and we’re all passionate, some more than others. There are those here who are more optimistic and sometimes influenced more by their heart and that’s ok. They keep the rest of us from jumping off a cliff. I’ve been a fan since the clubs inception when I was a child and the optimists help me to stay interested when I have a hard time doing so. Without this site, I might pay very little attention to the Angels or MLB because of the mess this organization is. But I also appreciate the input from the realists and the more pessimistic because they provide perspective and passion for success, and we need both. The fact that all of us are still here considering the state of the organization is a tremendous testament to our dedication. There’s room for everyone. Sometimes those on either end of the spectrum get irritated by either the perceived lack of rationality by one side or the over emphasis of the negative by the other side. We can cheer and be confronted with reality at the same time and we need to have the awareness to see the humor on both ends of the spectrum, even if we sometimes get irritated.

So the Angels’ president is out, which everyone here should be happy about. And the team has a new TV deal to televise games, which everyone here should be happy about. Plus some of the players/kids are starting to show some promise, which only a few of us here are happy about. 100 loses? Nah.

Replacement of Carpino is neither here nor there. I’m totally fine with the hire from within. I doubt a search for a knowledgeable baseball president would not have gone that well.

Congrats on the media deal. That’s good news.

It’s too early in ST for me to get goose bumps over the kids. Mostly I think they are playing their counterparts. Let’s take a peek into the end of the month and see how it goes when other teams play their regulars more often. The farm kids we have just don’t show as much talent and promise as other teams farms. The Angels farm kids simply evaluate lower.

Could this team win 78 games. Maybe. Winning 82 would be really pushing it. If this team finishes .500 it would be a solid season. The odds are against a .500 season, heavily.

Yup. It’s mid-March. The official beer goggles season for this baseball fan.

I look at that projected roster. I think about the “best case” for each player on it. I start to think “man, they may not be THAT bad.” Sure, they are clearly not the Doyers or Yankees. But are they BAD?

Yes. But my inner Han Solo sees how it all could work if we just have about 23 things go right.

Same with that starting pitching and bullpen. That rotation could potentially be really good if Rodriguez, Detmers and Klassen potentially potential their potential. And sure, if Detmers, Kikuchi and Soriano are good we should trade them for prospects. Same with Yates, Suter, Romano and Pomeranz out of the pen. But wait, let’s go for it right?

Enchanted by the Arizona tramp stamp yet again….

Was it when we hired Joe Maddon? That clown lost his magic when Freidman stopped running the circus for him. The Cubs managed to buy him a title that he almost fumbled against Cleveland… and that was it. Joe was just a meh manager who talks a lot and does silly things after that. That’s not grit. Molly Jolly is the new team president? This has to be some kind of joke.

She has ZERO baseball experience. Even with the Angels, her role has been in finance. Prior to that she worked in finance for Atlantic Richfield. (an oil company). That is her entire work experience going back to 1994. Finance.

This is totally insane. We have gone from Carpino (whom I generally regarded as the least qualified executive in baseball next to Kuhl) to someone with even less baseball experience!

Think about it…promoting someone with no baseball operations experience to have baseball operations reporting to them is consistent with every strategic decision made over the past 10 years by this franchise.

It’s so perfect and inspired and will definitely contribute to yet another season of disappointment in Arte’s reign of failure.

Jeff Fletcher has more details to come but sounds like if you have a cable service that had FanDuel Sports West then you will have the Angels network. https://x.com/jefffletcherocr/status/2029931944629420083?s=46
