LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Hopium

Welcome to the first week of baseball activities. Not actual baseball, but dudes stretching and playing catch. The main goal for this week is to not get hurt. Unfortunately Francisco Lindor, Corbin Carroll, and Jackson Holliday did not get the memo.

The phrase of the week was “hamate injury.” Just what is a hamate injury, learn all about it.

From the Angels perspective, I took a look at the top stories in the rotation as camp opened. Then the storylines in the bullpen. And, lastly, the storylines for catchers.

Jeff Fletcher also honed in on catchers, dropping this great bit on Logan O’Hoppe.

Considering only pitchers and catchers are in camp now, I figured I could stop there.

The big story out of Angels land was the launch of a $99.99 per year streaming service. Do Angels fans really need to buy it?

Super Bowl week was in full swing so I looked at who could be the Angels Drake Maye and Sam Darnold.

Moving on from that dud game, if the angels want to have any hopium Grayson Rodriguez and Alek Manoah have to be part of it. Both had arms attached and threw bullpens this week.

The bullpen is also very much in flux, so it was a welcome sight to see Ben Joyce throwing with a pretty normal motion.

Healthy pitchers throwing out in the Arizona sun is enough to give even the most jaded of fans some hopium. Here’s mine:

I think/hope Mike Maddux and help George Klassen get that little bit of command he’s missing and become a solid starter. I think/hope the Maddux/Yates duo can again put up great numbers. I think/hope that one of Grissom, Moore, or Madrigal will emerge as an OK second baseman. I think/hope Nelson Rada can force his way onto the roster after a couple of months in AAA.

I don’t think any of those thinks/hopes are outrageous. But if the team can develop one good starter, find an MLB caliber second baseman, then improve the outfield defense and on base percentage that’s a solid developmental year.

I also really hope Trey Mancini is part of this organization in some way. If he doesn’t make the team, make him a coach. I interviewed Mancini this week and it has to be my favorite interview I’ve ever done. If you haven’t watched it yet, please do.

I also hope to see Mike Trout continue to climb up the all time ranks. In this “what have you done for me lately” world Mike Trout’s contract is an impediment to the team. But if you look at his total career contributions versus the cost, he’s actually been a bargain.

As we wait these final days for Cactus League games to begin, rest assured that college baseball begins today. There are games going all day long and through the weekend.

Intern Landon will resume the college prospect watch as we head to the draft. Him and Yorke are scheduling game threads for the entire year. We are close to baseball.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. We are kicking off Lunar New Year a little early and celebrating a birthday. So, family, friends, food, and some dancing lions with drums is on the agenda. I hope you have a great weekend as well.

Angels.TV asking $99.99 to see Halo home games on TV? Now, that is nerve.

I hope the Halos don’t lose more than 99 games. That’s the best I can do.

Personally, I would have chosen Mo Vaughn for 1B over Albert.

Glad that I’m not the only one thinks Rengifo solidly belongs on this list.

Justin Bour and Drew Butera are such blips in Angels history, they don’t fit to me. Jeff Mathis should be there at catcher for sure.

Ok. Perhaps I might bit too optimistic about this season. I get it. But I also think too many are too pessimistic about the season. I am not predicting 90 wins. But 100 losses? That seems overly aggressive in the other direction.

The additions (although not Allstars) are more than capable of replacing what we are losing. Most would agree we are not losing all that much. We are gaining a couple of pitchers who have been really solid, recently. Replacing Hendricks and Anderson with a couple of young guys would be an addition. Taylor Ward – a decent player, but by no means irreplaceable. Let’s see if Lowe can take his spot – fewer HR’s but way fewer K’s as well.

We added a new manager and an agreed upon great pitching coach – so these things do not point to 100 loses in my opinion.

I predict the Angels are within 5 games of the last playoff spot at the All Star break. Then everyone here can debate whether the team should be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.

Okay, I’ll bite. The 2025 Angels won 72 games in a relatively healthy and luck filled season where Jansen saved many close and late games that likely would have otherwise been lost. An absolutely career year by Adell and a stellar season by Ward. Season sweep of the Dodgers and a 3 game sweep of the Red Sox. So pretty much everything went right and they still lost 90 games.

Ward and Jansen generated 6+ WAR between them. This has not been replaced. So based just on that you are looking at mid-60s in terms of wins if the same amount of luck occurs as in ‘25.

If Adell regresses (as possible as he does not) and the team does not enjoy the health or luck that they did in ‘25 – you could easily be looking at 100+ losses. It is arguably more likely that the team will lose 100+ games as winning 75.

All of that said, as you point out, the team does have a history of hanging around until the All-Star break. No idea whether this team will do that, but that certainly has happened in the past few seasons.

nobody wants to be proved right about losing. Still, there are reasons to believe 2026 will be worse than 2025. I *want* us to be, at least, in contention. Maybe Bremner will make the team and win 16 games for us with a mid 3 ERA. Then we might have hope for 2027 or whenever the next season occurs. Maybe….maybe. But we were lucky with the lack of injuries in 2025. Probability says we’re gonna get bitten this season.

What I’d like to see, realistically, is Trout have a good year (.280/35 HRs), three or four young pitchers show they’re major leaguers, Moore (or Madrigal) turns out to be a good 2b, somebody shows something at 3b for 150+ games. Well maybe that’s not so realistic. But that’s what I’d like. I’m still gonna predict a 39-123 record and then I can be happily surprised.

Last year’s team led the league in walks allowed and fewest walks drawn. They lead the league in strikeouts. If the new coaching staff can get the team to be league average in all these categories, their record will be very much improved.
Here’s the message: if you can’t throw strikes, you can’t pitch here. If you can put the ball in play, you can’t play here. Put it on the wall in the clubhouse and enforce it.
Sounds like little league, but maybe these 2026 players have forgotten what works.

Coaching can only go so far. If you are basing your hope in 2026 on coaching that is very wishful thinking.

Yeah, nothing will make players say “I love playing here” like putting up messages a ten year old would put up. Everybody knows that at some point if their performance isn’t what it should be that they could be sent to the minors or sent packing. Happens every year. The Angels are no strangers to sending anyone to the minors (see Detmers) or through waivers. That will happen without any message on the wall.

If this season’s team can be league average in walks allowed and strikeouts that would be amazing. Totally cool. Of course, someone would need to decide on extensions for the coaching staff because as soon as the staff can they will sign elsewhere.

Pretty incredible that we’re this far into the offseason and basically no one has mentioned Mike Trout. I mean, I understand why that is, but, still. How the mighty have fallen.

All I want for Christmas is for Trout to have one last glimpse of his prime – at least at the plate.

550 at bats, .280 / .380 / 35 homers / 90 RBI. I’m going to will this outcome into existence.

Its sad. Im kind of done wishing with this team. I once was the ultimate optimist going into Spring training. A buddy of mine was reminding me of my “four 20 game winners” predictions that I made before many past seasons. Growing up as a kid and even into my late 40s, I truly believed year after year that this could be the year! I sort of miss being caught up in the glow of pre-season optimism and hope.

Not that long ago (maybe 2022) I was writing here that we might get 5 WAR from Rendon and with Ohtani and Trout (and Fletcher, Marsh and Ward) the team could make a serious playoff push. That team won 77 games.

The Spring Training starry eyed optimism of my past has been beaten out of me by this Org. It has been replaced only by realism, attempted logical analysis and tamped down expectations. Bums me out tbh.

I believe that it was your comments that you made a few years ago to me that really started to make me see that there was not a future with a Moreno owned baseball team. Like you once were, I was always optimistic in the spring and could see possibilities. I have lost that and I actually feel bad about it.

While it was a slow downward progression for me over a long period, I think what truly killed optimism for me (ie final nail in the coffin) was when the Org failed to trade Ohtani for prospects first in ‘22 and then in ‘23 and then traded away solid prospects for what turned out to be 1 mo rentals. These were the moments where I really realized beyond any measure of doubt that the focus of this Org was marketing and not baseball operations. It’s when all hope under the current regime was lost for me.

Even if they did they probably would’ve squandered all of them and this is going all the way back 35 yrs ago for Jim Abbott to the Yankees. Most of these trades usually favor the BUYER NOT THE SELLER TEAM, why, because the buyer team usually has all the leverage to make the deal without giving up top prospects and getting them for A BAG OF DORITOS (Taylor Ward for a small bag of Doritos).

Disagree as do the Rays and A’s. Absent a salary cap, building a robust farm is how small and medium markets successfully compete against large market teams. That is done in two ways – the draft and by making these kinds of trades of established major leaguers for young talent.

These small market teams almost always end up as roadkill in the playoffs (2023 TB Rays won 98 games and we’re promptly swept by the eventual WS champions TX Rangers in the divisional series round).

Yeah. Trade the best player the planet has ever seen. That works out so well for the team that does that. Please stop with the Othani nonsense. He’s gone. Not coming back. He left YOU and the rest of us for more money. You sound like the BO SOX fans who still complain about trading Babe Ruth – but in reverse! Move on. Sorry but that constant revisionist history is just pathetic.

Dude – what revisionist history? If you took a moment to actually read my comment it had nothing to do with Ohtani leaving. If you had been on this site back in 2022 and 23 you would have read mine and other comments that there was no way he was staying an Angel. At that point you trade him and benefit from filling your farm with gobs of young talent.

What you DONT do in those circumstances is trade away your top talent for 1 month rentals of guys like Gioliti and Cron. Basically the Org took a huge opportunity to build up its farm and squandered it completely. Worse they traded top talent in the farm for nothing on the prayer that a 75 win team would suddenly become a 90 win team.

That kind of baseball Org idiocy and lack of direction is what I’m referring to. It has ZERO to do with Ohtani who was just an opportunity to fill up the minors by 2022 and 2023. I am not sad bc of Ohtani – I could give two shits that he is a Dodger. My nail in the coffin with this Org was not recognizing he was gone and getting top talent in return while the opportunity existed. Instead, he left and the Angels got nothing (worse than nothing if you consider the players they traded away) completely f’ing up the best opportunity to build the farm they have had in generations.

You have 13 total comments around here. Take some time and get the lay of the land before you come out swinging.

Oh I am sorry. My bad. I didn’t know there was a rookie hazing period. I guess I should just sit here and observe the old timers, right? I am a new poster, but I have been reading this blog thing for a couple years. And have been an Angel fan as long as most. So I am more than qualified to discuss the franchise and what people here have to say – even you.

I believe the original concept was this team has beaten the hope and joy out of people? Yes?

I know being an Angel fan is hard. Trust me. However, I am sick and tired of hearing crap from the experts, the media, and the other fans (especially the Dodger fans) about the Angels and how awful the team is. How the players are bad. How the farm is bad. The stadium is old. The owner sucks. The Rendon contract. The Josh Hamilton contract. Tyler Skaggs. etc etc etc.
Perhaps I was just hoping this site might be a bit more positive – especially in spring.

No rookie hazing. Just feels like you came in here all gung-ho – which is great. But respectfully your tone is a tad aggressive. I respect your desire for Spring optimism and you should definitely feel it and share it freely. I just don’t think you need to take on those of us who don’t share it about this team or Org.

We are looking at a team that I predict may lose 100 games this season. Worse, the ownership seems directionless. Upper management has almost no baseball people in charge. People like Kuhl, Carpino and Molly Jolly fill the highest spots. As a result, I see almost no chance for meaningful change.

TV money is basically gone and Arte has cut spending dramatically. He says he is losing $50m per year and seems intent on continuing to lower payroll.

Publicly the team is a joke and PR mess. The Skaggs trial and its revelations are just the latest warts.

Free agents of note don’t want to come play in Anaheim.

The Farm is ranked in the bottom three in all of baseball. Perry’s drafts have been mediocre and failed to meaningfully build the farm.

Trout’s contract has become an albatross. He can’t stay healthy, is now 34 and he hasn’t played a full season in 10 years. Oh and he wants to play CF bad knee and all 🙄

Both the GM and manager are signed to 1 yr contracts. That does not convey much faith.

We are likely looking at a full year lockout in 2027.

So yeah – don’t see much to be optimistic about. But have at it. Just stay in your lane and I’ll stay in mine.

They’re the f**king worst.
We defunded our own farm system since 2009. (IT WASN’T ALL TONY REAGINS FAULT EITHER, IT WAS GONNA HAPPEN ANYWAY NO MATTER WHAT) There’s a big reason BTW why we draft 22 yr old college players they’re older, unless they’re one of the Top 7 in the first round they’ll usually fail anyhow. WE SHOULD ALL KNOW BY NOW WHY MIKE TROUT AND ERVIN SANTANA WILL BE THE LAST TWO MOHICANS IN THIS ORGANIZATION. 😡 💩

Your argument cuts both ways. Arte and Perry knew the best player on the planet was going to test the market in free agency. Arte and Perry knew the best player on the planet was going to be offered a massive contract in free agency. Arte and Perry knew the amount of budget they could afford to pay the best player on the planet. With all these facts, they chose not only to miss the opportunity to perhaps strengthen the team for the next decade, but they also chose to trade two highly touted prospects for a journeyman pitcher. All of this because our front office baseball savants believed the team would not only make the playoffs – but also compete for a championship.

Yes, it’s all water under the bridge now and nothing will change the past. However it’s not rocket science to see how much the baseball operations staff have damaged the ability for long-term team success.

You can still be a fan and call out both the good and bad about the team, it’s players, and it’s leadership.

Look back over the years if you want. Comments are still there (although not including the old Halo site). And I don’t think my personality is womp-womp. It’s just a healthy dose of reality and realistic expectations. I predicted 72 wins for ‘25 and less than 70 wins for ‘24. So I think I’ve been pretty close. I am the first to be super excited and optimistic if I see a genuine reason for it. By contrast I don’t lean optimistic without a true reason and I just don’t see it with this Org. A fan can be a fan and still call things as he sees them.

I’ll also add that I was a 30 year full season ticket holder so that requires a certain amount of optimism. Finally gave them up in 2023 when I fully realized and accepted this Org was so poorly managed and overseen as to be set adrift at sea without a compass nor rudder.

It’s been radio silent from the Trout Newport Beach Mansion which is good. I like that. Knowing Mike’s competitive drive, he’s working on strength and conditioning. Hopefully not using weights to build mass.

I see 500+ ABs, 240/.380/35 homers/90 RBIs. Time to dust off the Trout cap.

Here’s an honest question: if YOU could address the entire organization (players, coaches, and management) and you had their undivided attention for 5 minutes, I wonder what some would say about them, their upcoming season, and what you really think about the state of the organization. Would you say the things you say here?

Be honest. Would you tell Trout , Neto, new Manager Kurt Suzuki, and two dozen pro players who have been in this league for years that they have NO chance this year? Would you have the stones to say , “Hey, you guys stink. There is no talent in this room. So you might as well give up now.”

I am usually the Debbie downer, but around you all, I feel like the most optimistic person in Halo land. Maybe I would give them the Lou Brown speech: let’s give everyone a great big sh**burger to eat!

Having had 5 minutes with Skaggs, Heaney, Carew, Hudler, Anderson and maybe one or two more before, I just asked if they read any books or watched any shows recently and we talked about that. I’m a subject matter expert on a few things, baseball isn’t one of them. They were all happy to sign balls, take pictures and probably liked being treated like a regular guy instead of a false idol. Good question though, I don’t have a good answer.

On a separate note, with a chargers player I asked what it was like to have every game be a road game and we had a good laugh.

I can’t really recall for Heaney/Skaggs (it was a book for sure) or Anderson, which is funny because I thought I’d never forget. Hudler would be the most recent and that was at least 4 years ago.
Carew is by far the nicest and best ambassador for the game. It was probably 20+ minutes with him, just said I enjoyed Michelle’s statue at the stadium, I’ve taken pictures with my kids there and I lost my dad to leukemia as well.

Right now I think Shrinking, Pluribus and Your Friends and Neighbors are great watches on AppleTV. For books it’s been all earlier readers with the kids these last few years.

I generally read non-fiction (history) so I would recommend two fairly recent reads that are accessible for anyone that is not familiar with the subject matter – “With the Old Breed” by E.B. Sledge and his experiences as a Marine in the Pacific theatre during World War Two and “The Last Crusade” by Warren Carroll – an incredibly necessary viewpoint on the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

As for TV, I’m a snob to be sure. Apart from the obvious classics like “Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul”, “The Sopranos”, “The Wire”, “Six Feet Under” and “GOT”, I would recommend something that I watched recently – It’s called “SouthLAnd” a very gritty show about the LAPD. The show takes place between 2008-2013 and is worth your time if you like that kinda’ thing.

As for films – I’m an even bigger snob here. Not much has piqued my interest of late. Some of my all-time favorites include “Children Of Men”, “Fight Club”, “LA Confidential”, “No Country For Old Men”, “SLC Punk”, “Jaws”, “Reservoir Dogs”, “Goodfellas”, “The Shining”, “Downfall”, “The Big Lebowski”, “Donnie Brasco”, “Seven” and others.

Yeah, that’s what many here would say to their faces. This is a positive and hopeful message, with some honesty as well.

Yet all I read here day after day is, “We have sucked for ten years, we suck now, no hope for the next ten years. ”

It’s a sad depressing state of mind. Spring training is a time of hope. And, as Any tells Red, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things.”

I love the movie and Andy’s message to Red. Here is another message about hope. “Hope is for people who can’t deal with reality”.

My version of hope is to allow hope to give me a vision of what I would like to see. Then I have to roll up my sleeves and create a plan to make my hope happen.

The players know the reality. There is no message I can give them that could honestly convey that there is any chance of grabbing a playoff spot. The players know who is in the room with them and their career history. And that history is that many of the players are less than league average. The players know that the team needs to win almost 20 games more than last year to snag a playoff spot. The players know the contract lengths that each other has and they know the coaching staff are all on a one year contract. That would tell me that the org isn’t in the business of hoping nor is the org in it for the long haul.

These are grown men and I have no ability to blow smoke over them and rah-rah them into a playoff spot. My message to them is to have fun with each other, have fun with fans especially kids. Have fun winning games and have respect for and have each others back when you lose games. Enjoy this time and laugh your heads off.

My hope is that each player has a career year. That the number of strikeouts is 10% less than last year. That the pitching staff finishes the year at least in the middle of their own division. That alone might gain us an extra 8 games over last year.

“We have sucked for ten years…” Lo and behold, the last season with a winning record? 2015.

I was born and raised for my first 15 years in Ohio. So I’m stuck with the Browns, Indians/Guardians, Cavaliers, Bengals, Reds, et al.
Was glad to see the Broncos come alive cause I was skeptical that Payton could bring them back. Kudos to the org. Wish the Chargers could do the same.

I don’t think we are going to be able to reunite Bremner with his boy …

Jackson Flora is showing off a pretty ridiculous arsenal so far for @UCSB_Baseball. Pumping 97-99 and touching 100 with big carry (up to 22 inches of IVB), along with a good 85-87 slider, big sweeper at 79-81, and an 89-90 changeup. Awesome frame, bazooka arm, with feel to pitch.

Flora ranks #3 by Fangraphs, #14 by MLB.com. I don’t have a BA sub. Can’t imagine he is around for us at #12 if he has a dominant season.

You should – UCSB has a really interesting club this year, sitting just outside of the top 25. They split their two weekend games against Southern Miss this weekend, currently ranked at #20.

The West should represent the region well this spring. UCLA is picked to go all the way – they have the #1 ranked player in the country in Roch Cholowsky, and he’s looking every bit the part in today’s game. Irvine looking solid this weekend as well.

BA has Flora at #3 as well. There were scouts last season who already liked him better than Bremner as a sophomore. There’s some violence in the delivery, so some relief risk there, but if he stays healthy, he’s going to be an early first rounder.

Another guy who had a great debut tonight is Tegan Kuhns, current Friday night starter at Tennessee. Lotta whiffs in an efficient 8 K outing. Currently #20 on the BA preseason list, but keep an eye out for him as the season marches on. Four pitch mix, ideal pitchers frame, easy velocity.

Castellanos’ minus-12 outs above average — how many outs they gain defensively over the average fielder at their position, according to MLB Statcast — tied the New York Mets’ Juan Soto and the Los Angeles Angels’ Jo Adell for 108th and last among 110 qualified outfielders.

Honest question here… how does adell end up a gold glove finalist while simultaneously being one of the worsier defenders?!

You know, I have been reading so many of you who say, “I will not pay to watch this team! I will not go to the games to increase attendance because the owner sucks! I will not support this team blah blah blah.”

If by some chance this team plays well, shows promise, is on the fringe of being in the playoff race, I will bet these same complainers(whiners?) will be tuned in watching games on TV (even if it costs…gasp…a few dollars) and in the stadium wearing their Mike Trout jerseys.
Perhaps I am wrong, but I doubt it. Do what you want, just don’t be hypocritical. It’s a bad look.

Not this year. They will be on the fringe of the bottom.

Speaking for myself, I rarely watch live sports because I just don’t want to spend the extra dollars. I love sports and I do root for several teams in different sports. But I just don’t pay extra to see sports.

And yes, the ownership does suck.

Oh, I see. If the team is good and winning, you will support them financially. That’s what a “real” fan does. But if they are not winning, then they don’t “deserve” your financial support? Odd though. You enjoy and care for the sport and team enough to spend time commenting (complaining) but that’s all you can offer until they become a winning team? OK.

Clearly you don’t understand what a RealAngelsFan looks like. Stick around, you’ll see it’s basically all about lateral bitching mixed with a gossamer belief the someone in the Angels FO reads this site and is getting a face full.

At least the people not paying/watching are actually DOING something to show the FO that some fans are not happy. Plenty of people will still find a way to be interested in what the guys we have manage to pull off, but this is supposed to be fun, so if it’s not fun for them I don’t see why they should have to stay in a bad relationship.

Better they don’t watch than stick around and play the shit sipper. Healthier choice. It will be lame as fk if a bunch of “I’m not watching” types still feel like they should bitch like they know what’s happening…. but RealFanz will likely do it. All part of a team sucking.

If I go to any games this year it will be to see the Angels play teams I’m interested in like the Tigers, Brewers or Reds.

I’ve been a fan since 1961. I live in San Francisco. I subscribe to the major league package. I’m not even one of the people who said that I won’t spend any money on the team. I will watch every game that I can and root for the team, even if they lose 100 games. But I also think everybody should be able to “fan” however they want, without judgment. And I reserve my right to bitch about Arturo and Minasian.

They have to be paying attention. That’s how they know the team is not good and they can complain about it.

I have to pay attention when I am writing up postgame articles. I still think it is entertaining even if it is bad. It is just hard for me to show up in person because of social anxiety. I live two blocks from the Rose Parade route and I have never gone to see it.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

I think all the “I will not watch…” people are just leaving off the “unless they give me something good to watch.” part of the comment. Of course, if the team is worth watching, they’ll watch. Sure, there are some folks whose Arte Derangement Syndrome is so strong they may still sit it out, but I think most people just don’t want to spend time and money on something that isn’t worth time and money.

The beauty of CtPG is we can express our opinion here on how we believe, think and feel and as an added bonus you get to do the same. After ten years of losing, it does seem difficult at times to express hopeium for the time and the fast-approaching 2026 season. But, you will notice that most have solutions to finding hopeium such as making trade prior to deadline for yuts, drafting better, hiring better coaches (Maddux was perfecto). Also remember that there is a lot of different opinions for different options, acknowledging that you disagree is Ok here without feeling that only you and you alone are right and that is hypocritical. So how many games over .500 are you predicting for this season 😃

Moderators, are we planning a CtPG meet up at all this year? It doesn’t have to be as formal as in years past (where one of you are on the hook to book/pay then be reimbursed), maybe just a meet up/group picture inside or outside of the stadium at a designated location. I can also promise to NOT be there if that will increase attendance.

Who will be the young player that manages to hit the meh pitching that’s left throwing in Arizona the last two weeks of March and gets hot? Who will the idiots on this site bitch to high heaven about Suzuki not starting over some broken down old man this time, till he gets some ABs and proves that ST is not the MLB? How many of us will be way smarter than Suzuki and his line up construction this April? Can’t wait to find out.

My bet is that if Rada manages to hit his way out of a paper bag we all start acting like he’s Jackson Churio, we can see it, but stupid Kurt can’t. Or maybe Moore will hit a single home run, stick his tongue out, and we’ll be hooked….

Here’s to Landon and Yorke! Doin the grind for CtPG! Big woof woof to them handling the daily head pounding of game to game coverage.

The Angels do, indeed, have a sort of “medical curiosity” type of hopium.

What will become of the much maligned Tyler Bremner?

Maddox will likely make positive changes happen for at least a couple pitchers. Who will it be?

I think it’s easy for us to lose sight of the fact that, in my lifetime as a fan, the Angels have never had a pitching “prospect” as big as Rodriguez. No. Not even Weaver. What might be made of him?

Can Detmers become a lights out starter? If Detmers, Soriano and ARod all break good do we sign them long term or trade at least a couple of them? I’m sure the dream is to have those three looking strong and a crop of kids like Klassen, Aldegehri, Dana, Urena, Johnson and the younger guys knocking on the 2027-28 rotation door. How close can we get?

Can Sam Bauchman and Ben Joyce become solid bullpen pieces? Will maybe Cortez, Shores or Snead join them this year? If they all turn out to be killers for an inning each can we stop bitching about drafting them? Cause that’ll be a sick pen.

Can any of Denzer Guzman, Kyren Paris, Grissom, Madrigal, Siri, Rada, Moore make an impact? Can Logan O’Hoppe become Lance Parish?

Can Slate Alford, Jake Munroe or my hero Cole Fontenelle become real life boys at 3B? Will Raudi Rodriguez break out in a big way? Or Joswa Lugo?

Who is Yilver De Paula?

Will we finally draft some position players?

It’s weird, and shitty, but so is West Texas and they discovered oil. We are hoping that a big pile of youth/young guys establish themselves and we build towards a solid all around roster, much of which can be worked out in the MiLB even if there is a strike. So let’s go QuakePandas!

MarineLayer

I’m not going to take on the rest but here’s my mostly likely scenario on Bremner. The #2 pick in all the 2025 draft will pitch his way into an injury and/or struggle as he did in 2025 (I know he was going through personal issues and I’m sympathetic as human being), be converted into a reliever, and continue to deal with injuries a la Bachman and Joyce. All sizzle, no steak. The more interesting question is how many of the 3-5 higher-ranked pitchers Minasian didn’t pick will outperform him over the next couple years.

Found this interesting from Trent Rush:

– Detmers changeup looks insane.
– Mike Maddux and Jose Soriano seem to be spending a lot of time together.

https://x.com/i/status/2022318315260252458

I’ve been pleading for Reid to up the changeup usage for YEARZ. He threw it in his no-hitter and then ditched the pitch, which never made sense. Soriano’s breakout is a question of when not if.

In 2024 he threw the change almost 15% of the time per Fangraphs. Obviously he was not a starter last year so didn’t throw the pitch almost at all but in ’23 he threw it 5% of the time.

Will be interesting to see how he develops in ST. I’m a bit nervous about him because the BABIP against him while starting is above .300.

Appreciate the fact check! Honestly don’t remember him throwing it that much. I expect his velo to regulate back down to 92-95 as a starter so he needs to go with a true 4 pitch mix imo.
