LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Meatballs

Tyler Anderson features very prominently in this analysis of which pitchers are serving up the most meatballs. Jose Soriano, on the other hand, is “the king of avoiding home runs this year.” Fangraphs is careful to point out that there are worse pitches than meatballs. If you bounce the ball fifteen feet in front of home plate, most hitters will take that pitch all day long and the result will be a lot of free passes Woo hoo! The Angels claimed infielder Logan Davidson off waivers from the Astros.

Benches cleared in Colorado over a home run trot. There was a lot of shouting but nobody got laid out. Matt Chapman pushed somebody and got a one game suspension. Several guys got fined. Top prospect Konnor Griffin got hit in the face flap by a 97 mile per hour fastball, took his base and stayed in the game. Roman Anthony is now on the injured list with a left oblique issue. Shelby Miller will probably be having his second Tommy John procedure.

The White Sox claimed infielder Ben Cowles off waivers from the Cubs. The Nationals claimed reliever Sauryn Lao off waivers from the Mariners. They designated infielder Darren Baker for assignment in a corresponding move. The Mariners, for their part, just claimed Jose Castillo off waivers from the Mets. They designated Joe Jacques for assignment.

Right-hander Guillo Zuniga just got a minor league deal with the Mariners. KBO infielder Sung-Mun Song is hoping to be posted by the Kiwoom Heroes this offseason.

Fangraphs is hiring a full time Prospect Writer. You have to know your advanced stats.

Speaking of packing our bullpen with possibly dominant reclamation projects, the Doyers just cut Alexis Diaz loose. If our boys can figure out why he has slid down to sucking from being very good, and the issue isn’t just his leg injury, he could be really good for us til 2028.

$580k to pitch maybe 10 games, then be potentially on the hook for $5 mil or so to “figure out” a guy that hasn’t been very good in 3 years

What a fun 2 games in KC.
Started 2 rookie pitchers, didn’t have Trout, didn’t have Ward for 1 of those games, and still won!
Love it!!

For today:
Cameron has not faced the Angels.
This is his rookie season, and he’s done quite well. 7-6 record, 2.92 ERA, WAR 3.2

Hendricks has faced Royals 4 times, going 2-1, ERA 3.33
For 2025, he’s 6-9, ERA 4.89

Looks like Trout is back in lineup.
Chris Taylor is at 2B.
Rengifo is at 3B – Errors (and misplays that are not recorded as errors) coming our way.

He may have a problem going for very many innings as a starter, since he’s pitched 62 innings over 59 games this season. They probably want to get him stretched out before having him start again.

I did deep dive a bit into 1985 more. Bitter, bitter. We had a 1-game lead with5 to play. They took the next two in KC then a few weeks later were World Champs. I guess after 1986 I had forgotten this with good reason. I don’t like them.

Was I bearish on Teo? Uh oh – I thought I was a bull (at least enough to push back on some who said his defense was meh).

Plus-plus MLB glove, AA bat. Thus it ever was.

The glove might be good enough to keep around as a 5th OF and baserunner off the bench though.

I’m OK with Teo in lineup for rest of season.
Angels need to play all the fringe players and rookies (Kochanowicz, Teo, Moore, etc) who they think will be a contributor for 2026.

If these players are not good enough to play in these remaining games (or, does management still believe Angels can make a push for the playoffs?), then they are not good enough to play in March-June 2026.
These players can be on the roster in July 2026, when it becomes apparent to everyone that the Angels won’t get to the 2026 playoffs.

When games mean nothing, that’s when you put in borderline players.

I sat ringside at a Muay Thai fight in Phuket once that was definitely not legitimate (which we didn’t realize until a few fights in).

It was essentially round after round of a larger white fighter from Australia, UK, USA, etc. going against a much smaller and less skilled local guy who would proceed to get his teeth kicked in. They were clearly trying to appeal to tourists’ rooting interests.

One of the poor guys got his arm broken clean in half at one point, pretty wild. Also, Bruno Mars was there sitting in the section next to ours. Weird night.

We pick up another player cut by a good organization because he strikes out too often. Perfect. We are unable to learn from our mistakes and continue to make the same ones over and over. What possible role could this guy have for us other than AAA roster fodder, which is what our AAA roster mostly consists of. Salt Lake City is made up of predominately washed up players cut by other teams. We don’t have enough legitimate prospects to populate our minor league rosters. It should be embarrassing, but we are without shame.

What would it take to get Jo up from his current OPS+ of 118 to 135? Current OBP is .302 and SLG is .502. Current lgOBP (adjusted for each team) is .316 and lgSLG is .410. His current slugging (.502/.410) is 1.2244 (rounded) better than the league average, so his OBP needs to be 1.1256 better, or .356 to reach that theoretical mark. If his SLG was .520, then his OBP needs to be .342. To reach a OBP of .342 Adell would have needed to get on base about 20 more times. It’s doable, especially if he could walk closer to a 10% rate.

AnAngelsFan

Probably about .5 in either OBP or SLG. For example, something like Bryce Harper (.359/.499).

Dropping K’s by 3-5% and raising BB by about the same would probably do it.

Been watching most of the 66ers games the last month, and I’d stack rank the guys Soto, Jordan, TGA in terms of starter likelihood. Wish we had seen a bit more of Kent before they shut him down in early August.

Pairing those kids with Quintero also really helps. Hard to overstate how good a defensive catcher this guy is for being only 18. I don’t know why they even attempt to run on him – he’s still throwing out 50%+ of would-be base thieves.

In last night’s game, 18 yo Jorge Quintana was playing against 18 yo Marlon Quintero, and GBoard doesn’t like that.

I already keep a close eye on LAA, LAD and SDP minor league games, but it also allows me to check in on individual prospects of note by just catching 5-10 min of other games.

Looking at the 2026 bullpen, I see the same concerns as the beginning of this season. Burke, Zeferjahn, Fermin, Bachman, Fulmer and Stephenson seem to be an adequate core but still surrendered 4.68 runs per game so far this season and pitched only 184.2 innings out of 521.1 bullpen innings. I expect Stephenson to put up 50 innings more nest season, but that’s still a lot of innings to replace. If Detmers remains in the pen, that will help but I’d like to see Perry not start the pen off with more Ian Anderson and Hector Neris next season.

There are additional options that have not even been tested yet: Natera Jr, Southard and Choban at AAA. Hurtado, Klassen and Urena at AA, with Cortez and Johnson right behind them.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Yes. You do have to wonder if any of the kiddies will show up in Tempe and maybe demand some bullpen innings as a “gap year” before they try to crack the rotation.

If the Angels sort of made this part of their development program, using some pen assignments as AAAA, it could be very cost effective and result in solid results too…. if they tie it into a cohesive thing with The Lab and AAA/AA.

But that’s the kind of forward thinking the Angels front office isn’t known for. Maybe Perry is trying to change that behind the scenes.

At some point the team needs to make strategic decisions around all these “starters”, and pick a few to test in the BP. I’d probably take the guys who are longer in the tooth, like Hurtado and Klassen, and see how they look in 1-2 inning stints. They tend to do fine the first time through an order, so I think they are both potentially above average short relievers.

Urena is young – they could still give him and Johnson a shot at starting next year, with Aldegheri, Farris (and Dana, fates willing) as future backend SPs. But I think guys like Klassen, Hurtado and Cortez are *now* weapons if the team simply committed them to short relief.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

PLUS! We can bitch about those guys becoming pen arms! I want a pen where Zeferjahn, Chafin, Bachman, Burke, Joyce and a couple guys like that are killing it… but I can also bitch about how we draft and dumpster dive. Cake+Eat pissbitch style.

Outside of Dana and Cortez, those guys largely aren’t even domestic draftees. I don’t begrudge them some time with these relief conversion experiments, but there’ve been a lot of them to date, and not a single one has borne fruit yet. Whereas drafting and developing actual young starter prospects is doing so.

But drafting relievers in the early rounds is still completely bitchworthy, imo, since you can get a guy like Sam Tookoian in Round 20 who looks like a better reliever than Chris Cortez is a ‘starter’ in Round 2. Hunt starters early, and let them become relievers should they fail. Only hunt relievers in the late rounds, ideally Rd 11-20 and UDFAs.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

This reminds me…. age old Angels question….

Is Ben Joyce still alive? And while we are at it, does Nolan Schanuel still have both hands?

I hope they bring back Chafin as our lefty guy. He’s a dandy dude. I think that the pen can be a spot where they add a couple FAs and there will be a point. If we hope to have a bunch of kids pitch some starts next year having a strong pen would be worth the cash.

I’d be down for Chafin and maybe some guys like Hunter Harvey, Brad Keller, Erik Swanson, Erasmo Ramirez to mix in with kids getting BP experience like maybe Cortez.

From Rotowire, dated August 25:

Joyce noted Monday that his shoulder is feeling healthy, though he’s not yet sure if he’ll be a full go by spring training. “It’s going great,” said Joyce. “I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life. Shoulder feels good. So it’s come along better than I could have expected.” The team should continue to provide updates on Joyce’s status as he makes his way through his throwing progression.

The “best shape of my life” is always a concern, but we should see Joyce sometime next season. I’m just not counting on him being a bullpen option for the time being.

I think the 5.94 runs per 9, the 1.46 WHIP, and injury history may be at play in fans and prospect watchers not immediately writing him into the Angels’ bullpen next spring.

Yes, he closed out the final game of the CWS with a scoreless appearance. His prior appearance against Arkansas, however, he surrendered 4 runs in two innings. It’s an uneven record, and everyone knows while the upside is there, he’s a major development project.

My first and only Angels game I’ve attended in the past 2 seasons was against the Rangers. I splurged for a Tuesday game and sat by the LF foul pole near the field. I decided to watch like a coach or like my sons coach and now that I understand the game a lot more on the playing level.,, it was obvious to me that the most dynamic athlete and player on the field was Jo Adell and Wyatt Langford. (No Seager that night). Neto was the one that gave off “baseball vibes” the most, diving in the dirt he’s skilled and the gamer.

There are currently 9 teams with a worse record. I don’t think #11 is an issue.

It really was encouraging to see those two guys PITCH well. Plus all the other kids looking good in the lower levels. I still don’t really buy Ferris as an MLB starter, but I’d love to be wrong and it happens a lot. Same with Mederos and Hurtado. But it’s good to see that, even if their stats aren’t blowing you away, they clearly are working on things in the MiLB system.

Nice to see us beating up on the Royals, (If memory serves me) in recent history they have pawned us. Perez usually murders us.

It does make another losing season a little less suckage by Jo Adell hitting homeruns.
