LA Angels Tuesday News Crash: Trade Wars

Here is a specuative article from Rhett Bollinger about which Angels might get moved at the trade deadline. Amazingly, no Angels appear in the Fangraphs top ten trade value players (/sarcasm).

Trades and Transactions

It looks like Royals starter Seth Lugo is going nowhere, as he and the club are close to an extension. The Cubs signed Jed Hoyer to an extension. The Twins designated Connor Gillispie for assignment. The Giants promoted pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt to the big club. They designated minor league right-hander Carson Ragsdale for assignment. The Tigers acquired Chris Paddack from the Twins in exchange for minor league catcher/first baseman Enrique Jimenez. The Braves traded for Carlos Carrasco. Cash or a PTBNL go back to the Yankees. The Braves are sellers right now, but they have a serious need for rotation arms. The Tampa Bay Rays traded catcher Danny Jansen to the Brewers for a minor leaguer whose name is not known at the time of this writing.

Injuries

Tekoah Roby of the St. Louis Cardinals just had Tommy John surgery. The health struggles continue for Deion Sanders. This time it was bladder cancer. The Tigers just placed Reese Olson on the 60 day IL with a shoulder strain. Nationals pitching prospect Travis Sykora will also have Tommy John surgery.

Bad Behavior

Emmanuel Clase has been placed on administrative leave amid major league baseball’s sports betting investigation.

Softball

The Talons took the title in the inaugural season of the AUSL.

Rich Hill got DFA’d today by the Royals. He pitched twice for them, going 0-2, 5.00 ERA. Got paid $365K for those 2 starts.

Aging veteran with declining stats and not costing a lot of money – a perfect pick up for the Angels, should they trade a starting pitcher by the deadline.

Silent C resets brain and regains some grit….. all good.

“More than anything. Mentally needed that reset and I’m back to good.”

Jack Kochanowicz had a bounce-back performance after making his first start since being optioned to Triple-A earlier this month.

FanGraphs released updated prospect rankings.

Tyler Bremner: #68 (50 FV)
Caden Dana: #78 (50 FV)
George Klassen: #87 (50 FV)

Christian Moore and Trey Gregory-Alford are both 45+ FV, sitting outside the top 100.

I don’t understand the reasoning behind the CMo omission.

The farm system is improving. FIRE PERRY!

CMo’s K rates are alarming and although he looked fine in his brief stop here there are still questions about his defense.

Hopefully he sticks at second base, but many draft pundits thought left field might be his MLB position.

If Perry is hoping to maybe compete in 2026, perhaps hit up Toronto.

Just playing with the simulator:

Angels get: Nathan Lukes, Myles Straw, and prospect Enmanuel Bonilla
Blue Jays get: Tyler Anderson and Reid Detmers

That’s 5 years of a left hitting left fielder with an above average bat, our 4th outfielder this year and next, and an intriguing talent for 2 months of Anderson and 3 years of Detmers.

This frees up a trade of Ward for other pieces.

Summer, Harry, Ryno, The Hawk and 11:20 (PST) Cub home games on WGN. Good times.

I will never forget the countless hours tuned into WGN with Harry Caray and Steve Stone during those beautiful childhood summers that lasted forever.

Ernie Banks may be Mr. Cub but Ryno capably took that mantle for my generation.

Harry will always be three sheets to the wind while looking for blondes in the bleachers between pitches, and Ryne Sandberg will always get the clutch hit or make the great defensive play to save the day.

What a game yesterday! And, I thought Angels were going to lose.

For today:
Corbin has faced Angels 5 times, going 3-0, 4.62 ERA, 25 Ks
For the season, he’s 6-7, 3.78 ERA

Kikuchi has faced Rangers 8 times, going 4-1, 5.30 ERA, 34 Ks
For the season, he’s 4-7, 3.23 ERA

No lineups yet on MLB website.
Will Campero play against the lefty Corbin? No Soler, no Taylor

Incredible. You were sitting or laying there doing what ever you do and Rendon actually popped into your head and you were like “I gotta rant about that guy!”. He had surgery. There is no news because he’s totally irrelevant now unless you think pink frustration magic can produce a way out of his contract a year early. But why think of the always sexy Rendon now?

It’s like, the other day, I caught myself dwelling on how much I hate the show Murder She Wrote. WTF am I thinking about that?

At the very least, the 2025 Angels have proven that the 2026 Angels can contend. There’s a “golden path” even if the doom-monkeys here won’t admit it. So trading Ward… eh, ain’t gonna happen. Let him outplay his salary in a contract year. Sign Cease or Gallen (hopefully at a discount, since both have been trash this year) and a few other pieces and let Neto, Nolan, Jo and co do their thing.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

I don’t think the same team plus a couple arms gets it done next year either. But we will stay mid for years. Like the Rockies. Just shift between third place and last with a couple war crime level years of suck sprinkled in. That’ll be cool. At some point maybe we get a few prospects all up at the same time and catch some magic like the Rockies have a few times. Most of us will be dead when the team makes the WS again. Though, many of the guys on this site will also likely be dead even if we build right and eventually make the WS. So why not? Take the 15th best offense, 29th best pitching, stand pat, then add Cease. Unicorns dance. We wild card out!

grichmanpoorman
Trusted Member

So tear it all down? They’re basically a .500 team now… with a few improvements, and not losing Ward’s production, they might be a .550 team. That’s a wild card berth, and that’s fine.

gitchogritchoffmypettis
Legend

Yup. If by tear it down you mean trade guys who won’t be here in 2027-28 yes. They are basically NOT a 500 team at all now. They are a very lucky team that is lucky to be almost 500 with nothing else in the tank and no shot at getting better in the years to come. So bringing back the same guys but more expensive isn’t the best plan. The only way they are a wild card team this year or next is God moving on their behalf, and even then they will likely turn back into a pumpkin for three years after.

Gotta get more prospects so they can fail probably but maybe become good players… and then do it again…

Here’s the status of the parade for the 2025 ACL Champion Los Angeles Angels (as the team is technically known)

Tempe won’t do it, said Moreno costs them too much money already and tax revenue from their fans from Del Taco drive thru, while significant, weren’t quite enough.

Los Angeles? Arte watches the same news in AZ I see and it’s on fire, riots, protests, Marines in the streets, Dodger fans in Malibu. No way, Jose.

Anaheim replied ‘what is ACL? No one cares.’

Blythe offered to host, but I will just go get something at Circle K and set off some fireworks in the parking lot.

P12 has probably already posted this somewhere, if not, here was a nice recap of the ACL championship.

A couple notes on the team.

“During the regular season, the Angels stood second on the circuit with 523 hits, third with 314 RBIs, and fourth with a .268 average and 368 runs over 60 games. Alvarez led the squad with a .335 average and an .856 OPS. The Angels also sported the second-best ERA (4.06) behind their duo of Brayan Vergara (2.47) and Angels No. 9 prospect Trey Gregory-Alford (3.54).”

The Angels overall record proves that when their good players play they can hang with anybody in baseball.

The record and run differential also prove the second one of the best players is replaced by anyone else in the organization the wheels fall off quickly and completely.

That’s a nice way of saying we have some good pieces here and need more of them. So let’s hope Perry lands some.

if Mike had had a typical year like he’d done so often, we would be in the middle of the playoff hunt. Not elite, but it’s a playoff team. Think of the drag that older Soler, Newman, Moncada chipped in. And Ray? Perry’s picks didn’t pan out this year, but better FA upgrades and a more productive Trout, Wash back, plus another year of experience for the kids…2026!

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  RexFregosi

I’d highly recommend looking at the rosters and player performance of the teams that are making the playoffs this year. Nothing wrong with feeling excited about the progress made this year by our boys thus far, but we are not close to slugging it out with the Rangers, Mariners or Astros in our own division just yet, much less the better teams in the other divisions.

There are still about 11 teams in the AL who have clearly better rosters than we do and far worse luck than we’ve had this year. Don’t buy into the la Drang victory of this year, we still have a long slog of development warfare ahead of us if we are gonna be a play off team for realzies.

I mean, seriously, the entire AL East is better than us. The Orioles are a catastrophic failure this year, but even they are vastly better than us if they add a little pitching and don’t have an extreme collapse in performance again.

We’re getting better. But we still have a lot of work to do.

Roy Hobbs
Super Member

And as Turk and others have pointed out, even if we filled the wholes in the starting line up we have nothing behind it yet. We were the only team to use only 5 starting pitchers and when we sent one down, we literally had no replacement.

I think spending a few minutes with Baseball-Reference and looking at team stats for batting a pitching will show how far off this team is from contention. We are so far below league average in every respect except HR and SLG.

I don’t think there is a lot more we can ask of the kids. I think Adell’s June is his ceiling. A nice ceiling but I don’t think there is more upside and I’m ok with that. I think Neto’s last season was his ceiling. Again, nice ceiling. Maybe Nolan gets better with launch angle and hits a few HRs, but I don’t think he has much more offense in him. So let’s get some more prospects and hope for the best. But if the pitching doesn’t get up to at least league average, there isn’t much contending in the future, imho.

gitchogritchoffmypettis

The level of newly realized love for Taylor Ward on these webs is so heartwarming. It’s almost like we shit on him so long and hard that we’re just out of shit and now there’s just clarity.

Do we bitch about signing a guy who is 30 pretty much all the time? Sure. But because the Angels have become vaguely watchable for three months it’s now a good idea to sign Ward to a multi-year deal at age 33.

This being a guy that 85% of the site could do nothing but complain about until about ten days ago, what could go wrong giving him say 4 years at 100M?

Oh wait. I forgot where I am. The hive mind probably thinks we should sign him for 2 years and 20M. Does Ward think that? Does it matter when unicorns are real? Plus, in a post game interview once he told a lady with a microphone he loves it here. So if he doesn’t sign for 20M it’s Arte’s fault.

RexFregosi

Arte should take care of him one way or another. Do Taylor right

  • extend him
  • trade him to a team that will extend him
  • trade him to a legitimate WS team and set him up for a ring (don’t trade him to gasping teams like KC)
  • trade him to where he wants to go

gitchogritchoffmypettis

Reply to  Pineapple12

We really need what will be provided in a good Ward trade. Position prospects. But it’s a nice situation that if we get “stuck” with Ward I actually really like him. He’s a guy who, if we piss away a chunk of money keeping him, I’m not gonna be annoyed. Unless we are suddenly “broke” when it’s time to try and keep Adell/Neto/Nolan etc.

But it’s not like Shohei, where the haul we’d get was so huge it could set a big part of our future so we really need to do it. It’s more of a thing that has to be done along with several other moves if we ever want to be good.

But hey. I’m in the catbird seat cause I enjoy a lot of baseball. The Angels can stay mid-bad for years and I’ll still be interested in their development and several other teams.
