LA Angels Monday News Crash: Newcomer

Guess which Angel is the “newcomer making an early impression.”

Luis Arraez crashed into Mauricio Dubon so hard he had to be carted off in a neck brace. He spent the night in observation, but they say he could be back with the Padres as early as today.

Max Fried had a no hitter going until the official scorer took it away.

Now the Braves acquired Scott Blewitt. Michael Fulmer cleared waivers and elected free agency.

Considering Kurtz was no Moore when we picked at no. 8 in last years draft, theres really nothing we can do but to cry about Moore’s flailings and root for Kurtz’s eminent demise.

The A’s are a problem. Looks like the MLB co-leader in home runs, Soderstrom, will need to find a new position.

Kurtz is a monster, no doubt. We got ridiculed when Neto and Schanuel were called up, and both have easily justified the move with their production.

The larger takeaway here is that prospects don’t have to sit in the minors just to sit in the minors, and Perry has been doing it for a while now.

I’ll agree to a certain extent but the fact that they survived doesn’t mean it was the right decision. I believe they both would have been better off if their call up was delayed for a year. They were here because the organization didn’t really have anyone to play either position and didn’t want to pay a major leaguer to be there which is not a great comment about the organization. When O’Hoppe was promoted he was hitting like Kurtz and he was a year older with more experience.

They were actually rushed so that we could upgrade production (hopefully) in an attempt to make Ohtani feel all jazzed up inside and not go to the Dodgers who he had absolutely no intention of signing with until after the 2023 season was over.

The counterargument though is the way early call-ups impact service time.

By keeping them in the minors until they are absolutely ready, you maximize their MLB output while they are still cost controlled.

Neto for example might start getting expensive by the time the team as a whole gets competitive.

I don’t really know where to interject, so I’ll just put here that I don’t really understand the middling impressions of Nolan Schanuel.
I’m not sure if I’m going crazy or what, but the kid is 23 years old, has only a little over 1 full season worth of games under his belt, and has a career OBP of .353. Yes, he does not have the power typical of a 1B, but why does that matter when we have power atypical of a shortstop? When I go back through the last decade, there was never a 1B that we had that looked more compelling on a consistent basis. Jared Walsh, Brandon Drury, CJ Cron, and of course Albert all had massive ups and downs. The only problem I see with Schanuel is shitty lineup optimization.

Uh oh. You’re sounding like me. Do you also have low standards? perhaps don’t love the Angels enough? Maybe even enjoy losing?

Yes. Honestly, for a kid who was just thrown out there, Nolan has done much better than I would expect. It’s because his contact and strike zone ability, which he was drafted for, is very good.

But if we allow for that it means Perry isn’t stupid. And Arte is less evil. And we can’t have that.

Mets: RHP Griffin Canning

Juan Soto, of course, is the most notable newcomer in Queens. But don’t sleep on Canning, whose contract is worth about half a percent of the total value of Soto’s. The latest product of New York’s pitching lab, Canning has produced a 3.43 ERA through four starts after posting one of the three worst ERAs in the Majors last season. He’s one of several unheralded pitchers bringing early stability to the Mets’ rotation.

I always knew he could do it

Kris Bryant came out and said he’s going to keep collecting his millions and hasn’t had surgery yet. That injuries, surgery and rehab hurt really bad and make you bad at high high level baseball. Also, that he’d like to play baseball still. Shockingly, it sounds like he’s not happy about being hurt all the time. He did not apologize to the fans or address the fact that he’s getting paid a lot of money.

Total cancer…. but at least he didn’t admit he loves his family more than playing baseball.

Remember that there were a few guys on this site that were so thirsty that they wanted to sign Bryant during that “GREAT FA CLASS” so that Arte would at least show some commitmunk to champiham sandwich? Not trying to be a sad donkey here, or adjust people’s perspectives for them. BUT I am having fun, and am also remembering that the Angels are still, at best, half baked. I’m gonna need to “enjoy” trading away Rengifo/Ward/Anderson if we can get a pile of kids for them. Soler too. If the FO wants to continue building a long term contender. Got to remember, beating on the Rangers is the goal here.

I’ll still be stoked as hell if Dem Kidz play like they have but we take a hit because of trades. It’d be a big balls move by Perry though…. if we are at .500 and he rips out 1/3 of the line up…. it’s not like he has years left under contract. Same with Wash.

In the event that we overachieve and don’t sell at the deadline, I think there’s a real argument at keeping TA around for another 2 years.

If we do sell and TA registers a 2nd consecutive All-Star appearance, I want at least 1 top 100 prospect

I was back on the East Coast last week and through the weekend so missed the Giants series. But I did follow online… Friday night was huge, especially getting that performance from Anderson.. And I was shocked last night when I checked the score after my plane landed at LAX to see 4 runs in the bottom of 9th to win the Sunday game and the series.

Jo really needed a hit like that… if not for his own confidence, which is never lacking, but more to show Perry et al that he can be an important piece/contributor to this team.

Question for people who have gone to home games this year; as part of my Arte boycott I have not gone to a home game in a couple of years …. Do they still sell paper tickets at the box office outside stadium or is it all digital now ?

But my uncles getting up there in years and wants to go to some games, and the Reds come in in August plus the team isn’t just a bunch of sleepy looking guys holding Ohtani’s stuff for him so I’ll probably go to a couple games at least.

Arte’s actually doing what I want now. No splashes. Solid coaching staff. More scouts. Better facilities in Tempe. MOAR KIDZ. I should probably encourage this….

Typical Hendricks line. People here expected to toss goose eggs every outing when in fact, he’s been Kyle Hendricks. @ $2.5M, just as good to the $21M invested in Kikuchi. It’s way early.

The walks are too high for Hendricks. Unfortunately hes not getting the borderline calls. Not sure if this is just bad luck or if his pitches are hard for the umpires to read based upon how our catchers frame him?

Agree, needs to bring those down. I’ve watched his games, he is missing by millimeters, umps are not giving him the black. But that is the way he needs to survive is to hit the corners. Kikuchi’s walks…are walks off the plate. Kikuchi needs to do better too.

He’s gonna start. The taking out Hendricks after two times through the order and throwing him long shows that. As soon as anyone is hurt he’ll start. “Good” news is that if this is the plan, and Hendricks is still throwing but Detmers goes to the rotation, then some other kid will likely get to be the #2 arm in that Hendricks mini-rotation.
