Angels Win 6-2 Postgame

The Angels went down 1-0 early on a sacrifice fly. Logan O’Hoppe hit a homer for the fourth game in a row to tie it up.

Kyren Paris singled and stole second. Tim Anderson singled to score him. 2-1 Angels. Anderson is above the Mendoza Line now. (His average fell back down to .200 during the course of the game.)

Kyle Manzardo homered in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 2 all.

Jorge Soler homered in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Angels back up 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jo Adell was hit by a pitch. Tim Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice. There were still no outs because of a crappy throw. Taylor Ward singled to load up the bases. Luis Rengifo hit a sacrifice fly. 4-2 Angels.

Cade Smith intentionally walked Mike Trout. Jorge Soler hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2 Angels.

Mike Trout worked in a stolen base before Logan O’Hoppe struck out.

Ben Joyce shut down the Guardians. Kyren Paris came up in the bottom of the eighth inning and hit his second homer of the year. 6-2 Angels.

Kenley Jansen came in to close it out and he did so. The Angels won this one 6-2.

Don’t forget to curse Intl Draft Pool limits too. If we had been allowed to spend what ever we wanted and he hadn’t said he was signing with the highest bidder then surely their was at least an almost sorta medium chance he would have signed with us. After all, don’t all the little kid players sign with the team whose offices they drove an RC car around in when they were a kid?

He must have cried all over that huge pile of maximum dollars the Jays gave him when he realized he couldn’t come to the Heim.

I was watching the game today thinking “I cannot believe we got Zeferjahn for Luis Garcia” and somehow 3 other players as well.

Paris is fun. I wonder when we can really start believing this is a legit transformation. That was Sewald that he went yard on today.

Trout looks like he is having a blast this year. The vibe of the whole team has been awesome. Winning helps I’m sure.

Keep it rolling. Trade Ward. Trade Rengifo. Arte is evil. LTBU.

They were honestly more energized last year than in years past too. Sure, that eased up when they’d lose a bunch of guys to injury and then lose a bunch of games, but over all the vibe was a lot better than the years before.

Now with Trout playing plus the kids etc it’s pretty lively in that dugout.

Sure, if the team is like 12 games over .500 at the trade deadline and we are legitimately a WS caliber team then I will probably change my tune.

If we are near .500, it would be foolish to give away prospects from our farm that is still rated in the bottom 3.

It could be if the team is winning with these guys they will more or less stand pat. I mean, you don’t always HAVE to add players in order to win.

Reply to  JackFrost

I’d actually love it if we were winning in July. But when I think “who could we trade from our system to get players for a push? Who would teams take from us rather than from another team’s farm?”

The answer is about four players, none of whom we want to trade for a 29 year old outfielder who is under contract for two months. Which yields the other larger question.

If we ARE legit contenders in 2027 do we want to be able to trade for important pieces? If yes we’d better trade for more prospects now.

Or just continue to draft well this year and next, continue to be aggressive in international signings and focus on developing our minor leaguers better while not trading away decent prospects for a couple months of meh.

The only real prospect we have brought in by trade that looks like is legit is Logan O’Hoppe and that was not a prototypical deadline trade where we gave up a young talented player with multiple years of control.

Its early but the jury is still out on both the Estevez & Garcia trades even though we already won the trades from a fiscal standpoint)

Zeferjahn’s stuff is legit but he is also struggling with an injury that if not managed well could lead to a serious arm injury
Lugo is now struggling badly in AAA with a .447 OPS and a 35% K/PA
Kavadas is looking like the next Trey Cabbage without Trey’s athleticism
Aldegheri has not pitched yet this season but is wisely repeating AA after dealing with some phantom injury during Spring training.
Youngsters Klaussen and Vargas got shelled in their respective season openers even though they were both tabbed to be their level’s Opening Day starter.

I think it’s wise to pump the brakes a bit on trade deadline deals especially if your team is showing signs of contention in the playoff race. Case in point Jer Jer’s 2023 dumping of Paul Sewald. I’m sure Jerry and the front office were high fiving each other after they received 3 players for what the M’s thought was a surplus bullpen piece. Certainly the Snakes had no complaints as Sewald’s acquisition helped lead them to a surprising World Series appearance, but from the Mariners standpoint, the result of that trade probably ended up fracturing the clubhouse as the Mariners haven’t been back to the playoffs since. Of the three acquired players Josh Rojas is now a White Sox, Dominic Canzone has been consistently meh and is languishing in the minor leagues while the Mariners are still holding out hope that Ryan Bliss can be a starter despite getting off to a rough start this season.

Dont get me wrong I’m not opposed to trading players on expiring contracts at the deadline , but the trade has to be able to benefit the team in the short and long term if they the team is in contention because if the primary goal isn’t winning when given the opportunity what’s the point of playing?

This will likely come from the same people who are mourning Ky Bush still….

IMO, If they have a winning percent around 550, there is no way they should trade away anyone away without a direct legit MLB replacement in line. (Anderson traded Detmers to rotation).

My fear is if the team starts trading while they’re winning, it’ll tell the young kids they’re efforts aren’t good enough and effect future negotiations.

OK, don’t trade the older guys because we are winning now, then come Sept. we regret not investing in the future. The team thought that way for 20 years and it doesn’t work, sorry about that.

There’s always something to be afraid of isn’t there. The GM shouldn’t care if it makes the kids feel sad because THEY AREN’T good enough on their own yet. and just letting Rengifo walk… or any of the other guys…. is stupid unless we just can’t find a trade partner.

SchofieldsWalkoff

If they are winning it’ll be because of the kids, that would mean they are good enough. I do believe that is the way it works.

To use your example, Rengifo becomes expendable if Paris continues his new found hit tool. I’ve already said TA31 could be expendable. Ward/Newman have another year of control so we’re talking about Jansen/TA77/Moncada.

Jansen may be expendable depending on Joyce’s development.
TA77/Moncada are probably negligible.

A 6-3 record and three series wins is a great way to start the season. The same with Kyren’s start, but the key for both team and Paris is when the league adjusts to them, how quickly can they adjust back. I do take some comfort in knowing that when regression occurs, there are players that should be improving on their starts, like Ward, to offset. Right now, I’ll enjoy the wins and temper my expectations.

Kp’s approach fix was all about load timing adjustment and attacking the ball from the rear. Not that it’s slump or league adjustment proof but just that its super sustainable to making good hard and consistent contact when mastered by someone as naturally skilled and twitchy as KP. The drills and prep work he did are the same ones I did to go from on the verge of being cut to a D1 starter. Its the formula I use for kids I work with once they reach a certain level of readiness to great success. Baseball and hitting especially is an up and down game but landing consistently on time and knowing you can let a pitch travel and cover any zone because of the work you have put in is an absolute game changer.

We’ve got a breakout player on our hands. We can either embrace that fully or with apprehension. It’s happening either way… or at least as Wash allows.

Good thoughts. I was at the game today, and the good news was Ward isn’t hitting, Trout is batting .187 or so, Soler is hitting .200, Rengifo just came back from injury, Neto isn’t even playing, and Adell isn’t really hitting either. But they are 6-3 and just beat a good team that won a lot of games last season. It was fun seeing them move forward.

We know there are still some gaps. If Stephenson could come back healthy and effective in the reasonably near future, that could really help. Right now they have some young guys to root for though and that’s how teams improve.

Always saw that as a value equivalent trade.

Marsh is a platoon player, strikeouts a ton with average arm. Philly makes the post-season with/without Marsh, too much talent on that team. Catchers are a cornerstone position and offensive hitting catchers are a plus, Philly would know with an aging Realmuto. Angels are set for the next 10-years with Logan.

I think Perry understands as a catcher he needs to be rested more — thus the acquisition of D’Arnaud. I was a little surprised that Travis didn’t start behind the dish today, with it being a day game after a night game and all.

But I didn’t have a problem with it 1) because it is very early in the season and 2) I knew how hot Logan has been… And it turned out to be a good decision.

Well, most likely we’ll lose on Tuesday, with Hendricks going up agains Baz who has electric stuff and pitched something like 7 shutout innings last time out.

So, we start 0-1 on this trip, that means we’d have to go 5-3 with 3 in Texas and two more in Tampa. I don’t see it. More likely we get 4-5, and we might be fortunate for that. I am just praying we don’t get swept in Texas. That would be a huge psychological blow for a young team that is trying to build confidence.

If Paris is the real deal, and Schanuel and Adell play well enough to be considered starters going forward, then are 2 young position players will become 5 and we will have made a big move forward. Then depending on what happens in the draft, and what we get back in trade will determine if we are on the right track. In 2027 we will have money to help fill the remaining holes.
