LA Angels Thursday News Crash

In this predictions article they predict that Mike Trout will be healthy and return to MVP form. It’s a strange article. They predict the AL Cy Young winner will come from Seattle’s rotation and then right away they predict that Jacob deGrom will win it for the Rangers.

The White Sox acquired left-hander Tyler Gilbert from the Phillies. They sent back right-hander Aaron Combs in exchange.

Catcher Sebastian Rivero has a minor league deal with the Angels. It is unclear whether he is invited to spring training. Moises Gomez got a minor league deal with the Padres.

CBS tagline: MLB rumors: Angels considering Pete Alonso pursuit, two favorites emerge for Alex Bregman
I really don’t know what to feel at this point. Maybe a one year deal?

Jon Heyman is the source. Jon Heyman is a mouthpiece for Scott Boras Pete Alonso is a Scott Boras client.

This is absolute garbage.

His clients are going to end up just like his clients from last year. No one will give them what they want and they will have to sign short agreements with opt outs.

Juan Soto is an outlier. He is a 25 year old 8 win player on his way up. Those guys were 30 last year. Bregman has been a 4 win player for each of the last 3 years and Alonso has averaged 3 wins for the last 4. But where as Bregman has been consistently a 4 win player for each of the last 3 years, Alonso has declined from 4.4 to 3.2 to 2.6. Bregman might be a better risk to continue his performance level. Bregman also brings defense with him. Both have been very durable and both could probably be counted on to be .800 OPS and 120 OPS+ hitters. Solid, 20-30% better than average hitters, but probably not all stars.

We *hope* it’s absolute garbage. We *hope* it’s a metric ton of bullshit.

It’s the perfect fiction because it’s based on a reliable pattern of the Arte Big Splash.

Grab an older expensive player in visible decline, for too much money, and too many years. Create positional inflexibility (Trout should be in LF, not Schanuel, and Moore is likely a LF long-term too). Burn a draft pick at the worst possible time (great draft position, solid draft class).

That Heyman is a Boras stooge just puts salt in the wound, because this is also a move Arte would eagerly force his GM to make.

Non hyphenated Kim has just over 24 hours remaining in his posting window. Rumor mill is eerily quiet of any concrete links to anybody.

Angels were 28th in wRC+ at second base last year. Kim shouldn’t cost a ton and brings a really nice glove and speed on the bases. No power, but if he can get on base that would help.

I have a feeling he goes to SD, but this is a story worth following.

Assuming Rengifo is not traded and he sticks at 2nd, where does he play if Kim is acquired? Per Streamer projection Rengifo would be 7th in AL and 3rd in AL West for wRC+ and WAR next season. That seems good enough for me. I do wish Perry would make a decision on this. Sign or trade.

I imagine Rengifo becomes the super-sub that would play any position other than catcher, pitcher or center field. There will always be injuries, illnesses and just needing a day off to keep his bat in the lineup. Or if you want to be cynical, you could just say 3B when Rendon goes down for the season by the tenth game.

Reply to  Born_in_59

I agree ’59. I’ve always felt the Angels wanted to rotate him around the diamond . Rengifo’s defense has always been average to poor so maybe they are afraid to stick him in one spot. The other issue is that although he is a switch-hitter, Rengifo has never hit as well against RHP’s as he does against Lefties so more a platoon role may work best for him.

Jeff Joiner

Teams work great with guys like that, too. Rengifo likely gets a ton of time at third with Rendon hurt, but if not let’s say he plays 2 games per week at third, 1 at short, and 1 at second while other guys rest. There’s a lot of value in that.

I still think Kim goes to SD, but he’s young and toolsy enough to interest me. On a 3 or 4 year deal he could have his MLB adjustment year this year then hopefully be productive about the time the team hopes to be good again.

Senator_John_Blutarsky

Neto is starting the season injured. Rendon is…well…Rendon. The team shouldn’t count on him for anything. Even when he’s been in the lineup, he hits like Reggie Willits.

Rengifo has a role on this team and is needed. Trade Ward and Anderson before getting serious about moving Rengifo.

I’m still not buying all the rumors about us being interested in Santander and Alonso.

But admittedly it sounds very like us to overpay for a couple of 30 year olds and block our younger players (Adell and Schanuel).

FungoAle

Reply to  Pineapple12

Yeah, I’m with you. While there might be truth of a phone call, zero chance Angels sink money into that garbage. I’m starting to warm up to signing the Kim’s to tighten up the infield; defense, bat to ball skills and speed. I’m not sold Christiam Moore will be ready and I really think this team needs defense and that is a skillset that can be bought, like speed.

SBs as an Angel —
1. Albert Pujols = 31
1. Gary Matthews Jr. = 31
3. Vernon Wells = 12
4. Anthony Rendon = 10
5. Josh Hamilton = 7

Senator_John_Blutarsky

I’m too GA to check on all of them, but Albert’s 31 total was over 9+ seasons. HGH’s SB total was over 3 seasons.

It is funny how it seems like 90% of the people on this site want to sign a free agent that stirs their needle and yet they seem to NEVER pull up their bref and look at their age.

9.5 out of ten times the players in question are gonna be 30. Or 29.5 hurr durr. Rendon was 29. Soto came up at what? Age 19?

They’re all 30 years old people. Pretty much ALL of them. And yet we always see the “wrong side of thirty” take from some chin rubbing idiot every time an FA comes up.

Schanuel and Adell at the league minimum or Alonso+Santander at a combined $50-60 mill/year?

Regarding Wash — yea, we sucked last year. It’s an argument I can’t win atm lol.

Schanuel should stay at the MLB minimum.
I think a 3 toed sloth has quicker bat speed Less athletic than one as well, I’d rather wave a sloth around 3rd from 1st than Schanuel. I don’t wanna keep stomping on him However, I don’t care if Schanuel is cheaper than Rizzo, Rizzo is just a way better player when healthy.
Isn’t it ironic how you and others back Washington as manager over a better younger alternative in Minnesota, yet stay in sunk cost fallacy mode over Schanuel and Adell.
BYE!!

IMHO, Alonso may have lost his stare down with the Mets. Nobody, including nearsighted Arte, won’t give him a 6- or 7-year contract. Him returning to the Mets on a shorter contract would be such an admitted loss of face move. Chatter online is that the Mets have pivoted and are now actively looking to sign a 1B, sooooo……

I actually love that pic 78, Trout is loyal to this losing franchise. He won’t get a ring, but will forever be ‘The Man’ – face of a franchise, hometown hero, GOAT to wear the uniform.
