LA Angels Weekend News Crash: Off Season

Our neighbors to the north won the 2024 World Series after winning the 2023-2024 off season. It is almost like outspending the rest of MLB on free agents helps or something.

But honestly, the Dodgers organization is leaps and bounds better than the Angels on all fronts. On the field, they have superior players at 8 or 9 positions depending on if Trout is the real Trout in centerfield. Their front office is incredible. Their drafting and development is top notch. And, of course, that bottomless bank account is nice to have.

Freddie Freeman is a good guy. He’s a devoted family guy who gives back plenty to the community. And he’s the World Series MVP. Freeman had a touching tribute to his dad after his game 1 walk off grand slam.

Like most of us, I never played baseball at a very high level. But I have a ton of fond memories of playing catch with my dad. Sometimes in the cul-de-sac in front of our house, a lot of times before his softball games. And now as a dad I’ve played some catch with my son and I cherish those times. There’s no sport that builds the father/son bond like baseball.

So now, what is next?

Rhett Bollinger found 7 questions to answer about this off season. That’s a decent primer and we will delve deeper into turning this franchise around this off season.

One of the first orders of business will be deciding which arbitration eligible players to keep around and which to let go. I broke down the Giffin Canning decision.

But then Perry went and traded Griff to the Braves for Jorge Soler. This is a big bat added to the Angels lineup but it crowds the outfield mix. Last season Soler posted an OPS+ of 121 and is 13% above league average for his career. As for the glove, well he has one.

I think the Angels move to a DH carousel and rotate Trout and Soler through the position. But we still could see an outfielder moved. Currently Jo Adell mans right field and is a Gold Glove finalist, something we’ll never say about Soler.

Out in the Arizona Fall League, David Mershon’s sprint speed is catching some attention. The kid can definitely fly.

For those of you not familiar with Mershon, don’t feel bad. He was the Angels 18th round pick in the 2024 MLB draft out of Mississippi State and did pretty well at AA this year. His wheels and defensive prowess are on full display here.

If the kid can hit at all, he’ll stick as at least a utility infielder. He slashed .264/.326/.298 in 114 ABs at the AA level this season and put up a really impressive .347/.454/.500 in his last year at State. His 5 foot 7 frame is likely a big reason he lasted so long in the draft.

All in all, the Angels prospects are doing well in the AFL. Niko Kavadas was one of the week’s top performers, blasting 2 home runs. The kid has a lot of swing and miss in his game, but when he swings and hits the ball goes a long way.

Hopefully there’s some talent in the group of youngsters including Kavadas, George Klassen, and others. But the team definitely needs to add external talent. Here’s a list of the current MLB free agents.

More names will be added to the list over the coming weeks as players are non-tendered.

Signing guys is fun, but trades are more fun. MLBTR took a look at 35 players likely to be moved. I’d love to pick up Brett Baty from the Mets. He’d be a decent third base option and make Rengifo a trade chip again.

We’ll be rolling out our annual off season pieces soon, so start thinking about how to spend some of Arte’s money. Probably $30 million or so. Probably less now that Soler is in the fold.

Enjoy your weekend and link what I missed. We actually have no plans for a weekend, which is pretty incredible. Not sure if I’m going to smoke ribs or a prime rib but something will keep me on my patio and playing in the back yard with my son for several hours tomorrow.

What is you’re rationale for that. I don’t think he was. He lost to someone who slightly out performed him and was unfortunately a Red Sox rookie.

Old school stats. Higher fielding percentage, less errors, more innings, more starts in RF. Better story! Went from worst fielder on baseball to excellent. If Adell played for Boston they would’ve given it to him.

Thanks, you may be right, but he did lose to a legitimate contender, so I’m not sure about robbed. Abreu recorded seven outs above average, tied for first in MLB with Brewers outfielders Jackson Chourio and Sal Frelick. He led the Majors in defensive runs scored by a right fielder with 17, and his nine assists tied Hunter Renfroe and Juan Soto for most at the position so he seems deserving even though Joe was also really good.

The Royals pick up my #1 pitching target at the price point I suggested he’d go at (3yrs, $17m per) plus an option.

Would have been a nice get at that cost. Wacha signed quickly.

That was obvious in Game 1 when he pulled Cole too early and then brought in starting pitcher Nestor Cortes to try to close out the game. Not withstanding the fact he hadn’t pitched in like forever, anyone with half a brain only had to look at his stats in close and late ball games a know this was not going to end well.

It was sooo reminiscent of this stupidity: https://bosoxinjection.com/2020/04/28/red-sox-memories-david-ortiz-walk-off-home-run-clinches-2004-alds/

Gerrit Cole exercised his opt-out, 4 yrs and 144 mil. At 36 million and showing signs of ageing, maybe just let him go?

Cole is being smart. The Yankees basically cannot just let him walk. They need to overpay him. If Cole wound up somewhere else, the Yankees would have to overpay for Snell. Their fanbase would demand it. They have a similar problem with Soto.

The proverbial camel’s back has largely been broken already for average families who may be able to afford a game or two a year. Most of the big spending is by businesses and high wealth individuals.

Well I agree and disagree. Payrolls are expenses typically dictate prices. For example, your local grocery now is paying higher per hour wages to its employees. That translates to higher prices for groceries.

That said, most teams use dynamic pricing these days so ticket prices will be higher based on demand and certain games.

But there is no doubt that there is a correlation between costs and expenses a business incurs and ticket prices.

After market tix are bought in lots and not at face value. When attendance figures move downwards then the teams involved start using different types of discounted promotions, just like auto manufactures when sales slump, deals pop up. Basically, supply and demand. And unlike those that think prices are not affected during rebuilding seasons, there are more discounted packages available, and prices do not go up either. During the McCourt years for the dodgers and the Disney years with us prices did drop at the beginning of the season following the drop off seasons.

I don’t really care for Manfraud, especially after how he handled, or didn’t handle, the sign stealing cheating. He could go a long way to improving the game by changing how the soft cap does not work and how a hard cap would go a long way to improving MLB. The Player’s Union can scream all they want, they do and will no matter how things change, but things really need to change to make the game even more popular, especially for the small to medium markets.

You are correct, but teams like the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, etc. don’t really want a level playing field. They want to be able to outspend other teams and reap the rewards via victories and winning seasons. They also have the built in contracts that require them to keep a similar system. To them, some of the smaller market teams might be smarter and do better in scouting and other organizational aspects. A team like the Dodgers could go ten years without winning the West if they couldn’t overpay and make their mistakes go away with the stroke of a pen. They basically outspent others to get Burks, Freeman, and Ohtani. All there of those were known MVP guys that LA spent more than their existing teams to acquire.

Ahhhh the value of guaranteed cable and broadcast revenue. Who has it? Well the Angels certainly do not any more. There is nothing but uncertainty there.

But the Yankees and Dodgers certainly have guaranteed and unthreatened revenue and, well, that seems to correlate to a willingness to spend like drunken sailors.

Consider that the Dodgers are paid nearly $400m a season for broadcast rights and that does not even include additional international income due to signing Ohtani. My estimate is the Dodgers are bringing in $500m or more in cable and broadcast revenue alone. That means the Dodgers are guaranteed revenue that exceed the Angels’ by likely around $500m.

Guaranteed cable and broadband revenue and who has it and who doesn’t appears to be creating the same haves/have nots that MLB fought against for many years.

Easy to look up. Dodgers have a 25 year, $9B deal with Spectrum in place which equates to around $425m per year. It’s the biggest in baseball.

My thought was that the revenue sharing and luxury tax was at least an attempt at balancing the playing field. But the inequity of cable and broadcasting revenue counters those efforts and makes them basically irrelevant.

I wonder if MLB has considered growing their own streaming service into something that would help teams without a contract replace some of that money? Though if it means doubling, or more, what they’re currently charging I’d have to pass.

I think that’s an idea but to pay 30 teams $125m each season to replace cable deals require profits in the $4B range. The viewership and cost would both have to increase substantially. As an example if there are 10 million subscribers, the cost would likely have to be $500 per season which may be too high for the average family. I don’t know how many subscribers they currently have.

Also – all 30 teams (including the Dodgers and Yankees) would receive the same amount so it wouldn’t really change things appreciably.

Looking at FA list, if we are going to attempt to contend, our acquisitions at a minimum would have to be something like Christian Walker, pitchers Kikuchi and Severino, closer Kirby Yates. Depending on how much those players want. But I’m sure that total would even be over Arte’s budget.

I don’t think it had much to do with what you identifiy particularly as their fans consider 2020 legitimate. I think it’s more likely that there are a lot more Dodger fans than Angel fans. The fan base and population in LA is HUGE – way larger than OC. Add in Ohtani and there is your explanation.

Mets, Dodgers, and Yankees, have higher team payrolls than every NFL and NBA team. A sport with double the roster size. Cleveland Browns is $246.4M. Phoenix Suns have the highest team payroll in the NBA at $226.240M. This is just crazy BS stupid.

A salary cap would certainly make baseball more interesting nation wide. Hell, look how many people wanted to watch Green Bay and Detroit today. All time great franchises? Kansas City and Pittsburgh.

But why would they want to keep fans interested everywhere? Hell, they could barely stomach a pitch clock. Another few years of “Big City Baseball” and even I will start liking the UFC and NFL ahead of the MLB.

But no. We have to protect the 1 in 100 players out there that might get a 500M contract from one of five teams.

50 years ago, this same scenario was feared that when George Steinbrenner owned these very same Yankees, would take place. The rich teams can afford the penalties and rule the yearly outcomes. It is time for this sport to put in a hard cap and severe penalties. Asking fans to support the game with already high tix/parking/food/drink/trinkets is just wrong. Today less kids are playing youth baseball and that should be the future of the game’s attendance. Billionaires are really doing damage to MLB and MiLB, not helping it. I don’t think we have a glut of OF’ers in the least.

Let’s face it, Trout is unlikely to play more than 50% of the season if the past half-decade is any indicator. It sucks to be black pilled re: Trout but, we must be realistic.

Ward, Moniak, Adell & Soler can share OF duties and they’ll get plenty of AB’s along the way.

I think the Soler pick-up makes sense and I have few criticisms, though, I hope he doesn’t fall off a cliff the way Hunter Renfroe did when he donned an Angel uniform.

Although it’s only a handful of games in center, Adell has played the position and he held his own fielding wise there. Not going to say he’s the center fielder, but he is an acceptable option at the moment.

Concur re: adding another OF. I would go with a solid vet (as in, not yet washed). I’ll glance at the FA pool later but, banking on Moniak is a clear mistake. I like the kid. Good story BUUT, a .280 OBP is unacceptable % from an OF getting 400 PA’s per year.

We can fall face down on a FA rake and get better production than Hey Mickey.

If we’re going to have an OF on scholarship player, I’d prefer Adell.

It applies to the speculation on this site that Wash wanted Soler based on his experience with him. My point is things can change a lot for a baseball player between ages 28 and 32.

But the assertion that Wash pushed for Soler based on his experience with him is kind of silly since he played only 29 games for the Braves in ‘21 and then was off to Miami.

Who the hell is speculating? Here’s a quote from the Platypus’s press conference:

“If we need him to play the outfield, he can,” Minasian said. “Ideally, in a perfect world, he does see some time at DH. Eric Young was obviously familiar with him in Atlanta, and worked with him in the outfield, his first go around in Atlanta (in 2021). So we do have staff that’s familiar with him and knows the player really well.”

I’ll put it this way, if the decision to trade Canning for 32 year old Soler was based on 29 games of familiarity in 2021, the Angels’ front office sucks more than I believe it does.

My guess is that it was just a brief check in by Perry with EY and Wash as to whether Soler was a good clubhouse presence and they responded that he is a good guy. 29 games is too small a sample size. Their input was likely something like 10% of the decision but that is a guess based on the small sample size.

Considering the shortage of Left handed power bats in the entire system, this maybe one of the only times in the history of humanity that I would agree with you Toots. Depending upon the deal he could a valuable bench/platoon piece. And like Soler may fetch some real value at the trade deadline if/when the Angels fall out of it.

Of course, according to their DRS, we would have the two of the worst defensive outfielders in league (Joc & Jorge) partially manning one of the outfield spots. not sure I’m ready for that yet.

29 regular season games AND a complete 11 game playoff run that resulted in Soler being a key member in a surprising pennant chase that resulted in reaching the highest pinnacle of professional baseball. If that isn’t a true way of learning about a players character and abilities under pressure I don’t know what is.

I suspect the input of Wash and the other current coaches that have worked with Soler is much much higher than 10%. You would be an imbecile if you did not take advantage of this resource. In fact I would characterize it as a fireable offense of the GM if it wasn’t .

I think the idea is that Wash etc know he’s a good dude to have around. Not that they have a current file on his sprint speed and routs on hand.

Doesn’t matter to you.

Got it.

Mmmm – not saying it doesn’t matter but I would not put as much stock as you would on information from 4 years ago on a player about to turn 33. That’s just my perspective and there is no right or wrong answer.

Soler has certainly been mediocre for most of his career as well with moments of decent performance especially in the 2021 playoffs. Overall he is the very definition of mediocre averaging 1 WAR per season and he is turning 33.

So if you view Canning as mediocre (which he certainly has been through most of his career) then this is trading mediocre pitching for mediocre hitting.

I would argue that mediocre pitching is more important to the Angels mediocre team than mediocre hitting but that is an arguable point where there really is no right answer.

Soler’s window is now and does not seem to fit the Angel timeline to compete. My guess is he will be gone by the trading deadline.

Which is we get a return equivalent to the Estevez or even the Garcia trade is still a win win for this team.

So Canning couldn’t have been traded for prospects at the same deadline that applies to Soler in this hypothetical?

You are working on the hypothesis that Canning would perform for the very first time in his career at a level that there would be any real interest for his services at the trade deadline, and that would even yield a real prospect.

I’ll take my chances with the probability that some one who has been traded multiple times in July and has then performed incredibly well (including last year when he was owed even more money ) would continue to have trade value at either this years deadline or next years deadline even if we are already out of the race.

I tend to believe pitching at the deadline has higher value than a bat but I agree that Soler has a track record.

Not mediocre pitching. It has virtually NO value.

Go look at the last,I dont know, 50 years of midseason deals. I doubt you would find any return for a mediocre pitcher like Canning.

Fair point. His ‘24 was definitely mediocre. His ‘23 was better than that. But I understand your perspective. I’m just not sold on 33 year old Soler (he turns 33 in Feb). But I think it can be argued either way depending on perspective.

Probably. And I’m OK with that. We need prospects anyway.

It he rakes April-June, we could get a decent return.

Canning = Soler
Soler = prospects

That would be a great outcome.

He might be. That would be fine. He’s not a “win now” move. He’s a place holder, and if we can get prospects for him we should.
