LA Angels Thursday News Crash: Perfecto No

The Guardians were working on a perfect game in the seventh inning when Reds outfielder TJ Friedl bunted to break it up.

Nolan Schanuel fouled a ball off of himself Wednesday and left the game with a right leg contusion.

The 2024 Arizona Fall League rosters are here.

Aaron Judge drove in more that 140 runs for the first time in 15 years. Woo Hoo! (several stupid emojis here). The Yankees placed Nestor Cortez on the injured list with a flexor strain. Braves third baseman Austin Riley won’t be back at all this season, thanks to his broken hand. Bo Bichette is having surgery on his broken finger.

The Pirates released Rowdy Tellez and Michael A. Taylor. The Twins designated left-hander Cole Irvin for assignment. The Orioles shut down right-hander Grayson Rodriguez for the rest of the season because they don’t think he has enough time to return from the injured list.

Bunting during a perfect game is widely considered unsportsmanlike, and the deeper into the game it gets, the worse it looks. But, like bat flipping, slow home run trots, and taunting, it’s still part of the game. Baseball has its own form of checks and balances to deal with players who cross those unwritten lines, whether it’s taking a pitch to the ribs or a more physical reminder. The worst sportsmanship I’ve ever seen? A football player mimicking wiping himself with the ball after a touchdown. We all have our thresholds, but in time, society—and baseball—usually find a way to balance things out.
On a different note, I’m going out on a limb here: none of the current Angels starters will still be in the rotation by the time the team makes its next playoff appearance. Maybe Soriano has a shot, but even that feels like a stretch. It just shows how far this team has to go—especially considering they can’t even beat the White Sox.
As for Rendon, I’m over it. I’ve reached the point where I don’t even want to vent anymore. I’ll just stare out at the field, shake my head like an old man yelling at kids to get off my lawn, and complain about the government. And when I see Rendon on the sidelines injured yet again, I’ll think, “Yeah, that looks familiar.

At least six guys in that lineup that no first division team would ever play in anything other than an emergency situation.

You literally could almost justify trading anyone on the current roster other than Trout (because he isn’t tradable), because none of them are likely to still be under club control by the time the team is competitive. O’Hoppe has just 4 years left, and Neto and Schanuel 5. We’ll see what happens over the winter and next year, but today things look very bleak. Obviously, a lot can happen under the right circumstances but you start wondering if we are becoming the So Cal “As” in a nicer area, with a nicer stadium, and a more expensive roster. We have a 75M tax on the roster for no production before we even get started. I understand Trout is still a very good player when healthy but the question has been, how often is that.

A lot of talk of the anticipation of DFA Rendon next yr. I’m on that boat too, sick of the guy, but have one personal concern. When we do it, guess who I predict will be there to pick that chump up with us paying him? Big blue. They could use a back up 3rd base for Muncy who sucks at that position. Then you know the story; Rendon will magically find a resemblance of his old self and be productive. Make us hate him even more, while D nation again laughs at us. Like how they got Albert and Heaney to be rejuvenated. Maybe I’m just waking up from a nightmare, but it’s the same bad thoughts I had that could happen Sho that are coming true in blue. Painful

I’d take a shot on Irvin.

Griffin Canning has given us 166 innings of work that is 20% below MLB average this year. Irvin is historically a 160 inning guy that is about 10-15% below average and costs minimum wage.

I’m not sayin he should be locked into a rotation spot, but he could establish a floor for the off season. If we get somebody better, he can be released. If not, at least we have our 5th starter.

You’re right Jeff. Canning has had some value as a below average starter while under club control, but what he provides is no longer a good value as a FA. And he has definitely established his level of performance.

The problem is we have an entire roster of back end starters and we desperately need some aces and #2 types. Hoping that some of them will improve to that level is not a strategy.

Soriano looks like a solid #2 and we have adequate 3-5 guys but you are correct, we do not have a top of the rotation starter. And that is not to say we couldn’t use another #2 as well. The problem is that we can’t use those guys yet because we have so many position player holes. You want to acquire those guys when you’re position player line up is ready to go, 2026 at the earliest and more likely 2027 or 2028.

NO! You get the quarterback, THEN you go get an O Line and receivers and a defense. Everybody knows this stupid. Just ask David Carr.

We likely have another two years of “What we really need to do is go out there and get a staff ace level starter cause we narr deverlap dem” glop ahead of us….

Eager to see how Fontenelle does in the fall league… would make these Rendon DFA fantasies more credible if he kicks ass. Mershon, too… good numbers in AA right out of college but seems to lack pop.

Rendone won’t be DFAed until at least after the AS break next season. That is of course if he isn’t on the IL…..

While that may very well be true, keeping him on the roster serves no purpose and provides no benefit unless it involves insurance reimbursement. He has no value and he takes the spot of a potentially contributing player. He’s 35% below average as a hitter and a defensive liability. having him on the roster prevents the club from moving ahead and says “We’re not really going to get serious until his contract is off the books”.

I enjoyed watching Fontenelle at TCU. As I’m not a scout, I figured he’d go higher than the 6th round just based on his numbers and my eyeball test.

Unfortunate injury this year but hopefully he can do well in the AFL and early next season.

Lugo’s hand injury must be worse than advertised. I would fully expect Matthew Lugo to be part of that crew, since I’d expect they’re looking at him, Mershon and Fontenelle as potential bench/utility guys on the MLB club next spring.

The question now is which team makes history first: The White Sox with most losses in modern baseball or The Angels with most losses for the franchise since it’s inception?

When fans make their list of the worst MLB owners, they refer to John Fisher, Jerry Reinsdorf, the Monfort brothers, and Arte Moreno. Moreno constantly meddles with his chosen GM’s transactions, presides over a team with numerous scandals, neglects his Minor League operations, falls behind the times when it comes to modern day front office technology and data integrations, and finances big-name players but does not provide enough to fill out deep rosters. The idea of Moreno selling the team before the 2023 season could have been a huge turning point for Trout, Ohtani, and the Angels. Alas, Moreno unfortunately decided to hold onto the franchise.

Angels fans will never forgive Moreno for how he squandered prime years of Trout and Ohtani and MLB fans will never stop making fun of the franchise. If the Detroit Tigers reach the postseason, the Angels will stand alone as the organization with the longest current playoff drought in MLB, and the third longest in North American sports (trailing the New York Jets and Buffalo Sabres).

What makes Arte the worst owner in sports is that he purchased an organization with good practices in place and intentionally destroyed them to focus on marketing. The scouting and player development departments were excellent when he purchased the team and had provided a pipeline of excellent players who were the key component in winning a WS. The Farm was really good. It was all in place and it led to a first 8 years of significant success. He knew enough to rely on the good people around him at first and this led to the glory years. The structure was good enough to sustain success for a time.

Over the years, however, I suspect that early success Fed Arte’s ego and he began to believe he knew better than the baseball people he had in place. He then dismantled the systems or failed to pay to upgrade them with the newest technology. He got rid of solid baseball people replacing them with his stooges. He essentially took a well oiled and functioning machine and ran it into the ground-failing to maintain it and putting unqualified people in charge of running it (Carpino, Kuhl and Jolly).

So Arte’s mismanagement is not just omission, it’s commission and that makes him the worst owner in sports. He was given a well running Mercedes and he turned it into a jalopy.

Exactly.

He took over the defending World Series champions, the front office that built those champions, and a minor league system with plenty of talent to keep the winning going.

He has turned that into a last place team and horrid farm system through a series of stupid hires and meddlesome moves by him and his friends.

There’s an article on Yahoo complaining how Boston is a .500 team five years into a rebuild after cheaping out post-World Series. What I would give to have their roster and farm system four years from now. Moreno has destroyed this team so thoroughly I’m not sure we ever get there.

Arte isn’t even in the top 5 worst owners in sports. Sure, you may feel like it since it’s your ass that’s raw, but no. He sucks, but he’s far from the worst.

Wouldn’t it be cool if he actually sold the team to a group that becomes truly THE WORST? Maybe we can ju ju that into being?
